One thing's for sure. If you sent it for the first time last night, you've
got to be more patient when waiting for responses. Never expect immediate
assistance from any postings to Email lists for a number of reasons. People
may not know anything about your questions, as is the case with me in this
set of queries you've sent. Also, people might not check their inboxes for
a few days, so haven't read your post yet. Give a few days, at least,

Subject: [JAWS-Users] back on the list with questions

Hi listers. I sent this message last night right after I subscribed, and
never did see it post, so don't know if it did.

My name is Ted Phillips. I live in Calgary Alberta Canada. I think I was
on this list years ago but unsubscribed because I was getting too many
messages from too many lists. Now for my questions.

I just bought a slightly used braille pen 12 and am wanting to know if
anyone on the list knows how to make it auto advance like some of the
other
braille displays? I want to read without having to use the braille
panning

keys.

Next, if there is someone on the list that is using a braille pen 12 with
jaws that will communicate with me off list, I am wanting to find out such
things as updating, and whether it can be done by me, and if I need to
update it.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks all

Ted Phillips

Exactly. You would logically think that in order to get to something west
of you, and you move east around the globe, you would eventually get there.
But you cannot. Yet, move west from your origin, and you'll find it. It
makes absolutely no sense at all.

It's not that simple. Here's a specific example of why the ribbon menus
are so maddening. Suppose I want to print an envelope using Word 2007,
but I can't recall the quick tip keys to access the Envelopes option on
the Mailings tab. First, I press Alt to bring up the menu tabs, then use
right arrow to scroll to the Mailings tab and select it by pressing Enter.
The first item I encounter after pressing Tab is Labels. If I continue to
tab from this point, I will get dozens of options , but never encounter
the Envelopes option. However, if I navigate back to the Labels option
and then press Shift-Tab or Shift-left arrow, the Envelopes option
magically appears. This behavior certainly doesn't make any sense to me.
Why doesn't the Envelopes option appear when you keep pressing Tab? Why
do you have to press Shift-Tab from the Labels option to find it? And
navigating the ribbon menus in MS Office is one thing, but what about the
ribbon menus for Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer which are used in
Windows 8? This is a whole other ball game altogether.

hello;
well here's my take on the ribbons,
obviously, you have an upper and lower part of the ribbon.
the upper part is primarily the various tabs, example:
home, insert, page layout, etc,
the lower part of the ribbon provides the various setting for each of the
tabs.
to access the settings, use the tab key,
now you may hear things such as, 1 of 4, one of 8,
so, by using the tab key, you'll stay in the lower part of the ribbon,
and

stay focused on the particular tab title.
if you go to the top of the ribbon,
now do a ctrl+tab, you will hear such things as,
page numbers button, use the right arrow,or the tab key,
word count,
spelling and grammar button,
etc,
also,
keep in mind, you can find many settings, access,
when you use the applications key in word.

Mike,

I'll try this in general brief but rough summary, dealing with the idea
of it. You're familiar with tab controls? The different pages (ctrl+tab)
you get in multi-page dialog boxes? Well, ribbons are much the same as
them. You can also right- or left-arrow between each of them. Now you
have lower ribbons, or sub-ribbons, which will be accessed through their
parent ribbons - often down-arrow from such if there's a sub-or
lower-ribbon present on an option. The JAWS Virtual Ribbons are not the
real Ribbons, and indeed, in some cases they rearrange many things in
the structure and leave other things out. Another way to regard them is
as if they were toobars activated with buttons. (You may recall Excel
had plenty of those.)

Now the good news is that there are many, many hot keys associated with
the items in the Ribbons, that can be activated. However, it does take
longer to accomplish a task i.e., more keystrokes, that formerly used to
be a quite simple structural through the menu approach. Things are now
more layered than they were, i.e. more vertical rather than linear.

While I appreciate what Freedom Scientific has done with jaws to make ribbon
menus somewhat workable, if Microsoft had left things that weren't broken
alone, none of this would have been necessary. The least they could have
done, if they insist on forcing this navigation system on us, would to have
made it logically laid out and navigable using standardization.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Virtual Ribbons Explained

Hi LeDon,

I believe you wanted the Virtual Ribbons explained. Here you go, from Jaws
training:

The Virtual Ribbon Menu Feature - New in JAWS 12
Introduction

The ribbon is a new style of menu available in many new applications being
released today. Ribbons first appeared in Office 2007 programs, but are now
becoming more common in other applications tailored for the Windows® 7
operating system. Ribbons create an accessibility challenge due to
inconsistent
navigation between various groups and items. For example, the lower ribbon
contains groups of icons, sometimes arranged in several rows. When you press
the ARROW keys to move between items in a group, you can skip items if there
is a row above or below the one you are on. When pressing the ARROW keys or
TAB, no indication is given when focus leaves one group and enters another.
You cannot use first letter navigation in the ribbons, because pressing keys
might activate ribbon key tips. Finally, because of a group's layout, you do
not know if you should navigate up, down, left, or right to select an item.

The new virtual ribbon menu feature in JAWS® screen reading software
provides predictable navigation, lets you see everything in the ribbon, and
offers
consistency when navigating with the ARROW keys. For example, each group on
the lower ribbon is treated as a submenu. Once you open the group submenu,
you can press DOWN ARROW to move through all of the items within that group.
When you reach the bottom of the items in that group, focus wraps back to
the top item, and vice versa. You can also use first letter navigation in
the virtual ribbon menu. Here are a few keystrokes to help you get started
using
the virtual ribbon menu:

list of 6 items
• Move from one ribbon tab to another, ALT to move to the first tab, then
LEFT or RIGHT ARROW. JAWS reads the name of the tab as you move to it.
• Move from an upper ribbon tab to the lower ribbon groups, DOWN ARROW or
ENTER. JAWS announces and treats the lower ribbon groups as if they were
submenus.

• Open a ribbon group submenu, RIGHT ARROW or ENTER.
• Navigate the items within each submenu, UP or DOWN ARROW, or first letter
navigation.
• Close a submenu, LEFT ARROW or ESC.
• Move from the lower ribbon back to the upper ribbon, ESC.
list end

NOTE: One nice feature of the JAWS virtual ribbon menu is that when you
activate an item and focus returns to the document or application you are
working
on, JAWS remembers where you just were on the ribbon. If you press ALT
again, instead of having to go back to the upper ribbon and find your place
again,
JAWS goes right back to where it was previously, in the same group, and on
the exact same control you were last on.

I'll demonstrate all of these things to you, and you can practice along with
me in just a few minutes.

Also, just a reminder, whenever you want to pause the audio of this DAISY
book, just press CTRL+P. When you are ready to resume, press CTRL+P again.
Remember,
you can leave the DAISY book in the background and use this keystroke to
play or pause the audio while working on your practice documents in the
foreground.
When FSReader DAISY player is open, even in the background, use this
keystroke to toggle the audio on and off. If you need to print something
while FSReader
is open, just go to the File menu and choose Print.

Using the JAWS Virtual Ribbon Menu as Opposed to the Microsoft Ribbon - Some
Differences

The virtual ribbon menus feature allows for ribbon navigation using standard
menu type commands such as scrolling with the arrow keys and first letter
navigation. While virtual ribbon menus are enabled with JAWS, the built-in
key tips and accelerator keys that appear visually on the ribbon and on the
buttons are disabled.

For example, to insert a bookmark in Microsoft® Word, here are the steps for
both scenarios, one using the ribbon, and the second one using JAWS virtual
ribbon menus:

Using Microsoft Word Key Tips:

list of 2 items
• Using the built-in keyboard access in Microsoft Word, you would first
press ALT+N to move to the Insert tab of the ribbon.
• Next, you press the letter K, the Microsoft key tip to activate the
bookmark button.
list end

Using JAWS Virtual Ribbon Menus:

list of 4 items
• In order to activate the button using the virtual ribbon menus you first

The problem is that you can tab or arrow into a subRibbon, if you could call
it that, and the opposite keystroke such as a shift leftarrow or shift tab
does not bring you back to where you were when you used the keystroke that
got you into that subRibbon. If I go too far north along a sidewalk, I
expect to be able to accurately retrace my steps to get back to where I made
the error in judgment.

As indicated in other messages, yes, you most definitely will need all of
those files in order to have I Tunes work properly.

FYI, I Tunes usually brings files into the system using a format called
M4

A. That is not MP3. Some systems will not recognize it. The only way I
know to bring those into the MP3 format is with some kind of converting
software.
For example, if you have Gold Wave on your system, you could record the
song, then save it as an MP3.
I believe that there are other easier software packages as well but you
need

to make sure that whatever you use does recognize and can work with M4 A.
I'll bet someone on this list can come up with several options. My only
reason for poking my nose in is that I just had the same issue myself.

Do I need all of these?

I'm new to I Tunes and was looking for a place to buy/download mp3 music.

A lot has changed. Offhand, I don't recall which podcasts cover this, but
check on the FS site for FS Podcasts. There is a very good walk through on
iTunes. By the way, so that screen readers will pronounce it correctly, the
T of iTunes is capitalized. All other letters are lower case. The same is
true for the iPhone and other such devices.

The latest's ITunes works very well with Jaws 15.

I have an IPod, I can not give my opinion on an iPhone.
Just go to ninite.com and use your space bar to check iTunes, and then
press the enter key on get installer.

Ninite will install the latest's iTunes and set it up on your computer.
Listen to the Freedom scientific podcast on how to use jaws with iTunes to
learned how to do different things.
You are mainly going to use the f6 key, the tab key, space bar and enter
keys, and the arrow keys.

I hope this helps...

From the way you wrote that first formula, I don't think it will work.
There should be a colon rather than a space, and you're telling it to add
these 3 cells rather than these 3 columns. Also, you're telling, with the
second formula to add, but there's nothing to add to the cell shown.

wysiwyg does have a meaning: What you see is what you get. It actually
is important, and I wish more programs gave it to us. How many times have
you created something, it looks right so you print or send it, and it
doesn't come out the way you put it in? If wysiwyg is a feature, the
finished project comes out just as you saw it before printing or sending.

WYSIWYG is just one of many bits of jargon floating around the nerd
section of society.
Another one of interest is the term TWAIN which describes a driver
required for Optical Character Recognition.

TWAIN literally means a Tool Without an Interesting Name.
Most confusion to normal people, but amusing for nerds.

I have an iPhone 5, and I think that what he was getting at, although it is
a very expensive solution, is that you can use siri, which is a voice
activated way of using your phone, to convert temperatures from Fahrenheit
to Celsius or the other way around simply by asking, and the iPhone will
respond, verbally with the results. My suggestion of using the Windows
calculator is already on your PC, and it works with jaws. No Internet is
needed.

I am looking for an Internet converter. My dream would be to type a
measurement in it and have it convert it to the opposite, from metric
to Celsius or backwards. For instance, I would type in 18 C and be
able to get a Fahrenheit equivalent or 8 feet and get a metric
equivalent. Of course, I would love to have all puzzles resolved
with one converter, but I am also a realist and if it would take
one each for different measurements, I can deal with this also. My
goal is to place a link or web address for these on my Desktop so
that I can get to this information as quickly as possible.

Now, nothing is perfect and I am sure such a comprehensive tool
does not exist, but without dreams, they can never come true.

Any converters you successfully use with JAWS are definitely of
interest to me. In advance, I thank you for any and all help and
 guidance about this matter.

Hi Maria, Liuda, Charles,

In Windows7 you can run Outlook Express but, it's called Windows Mail.
Yes,

I said Windows Mail not, Windows Live Mail. It is a registry hack to make
it work I've been running it since I got a Win7 computer. I'm not
saying

anymore about it since it is a registry hack I don't want to feel

I also feel the same way about Outlook Express. Is it possible to use

I have never been so lost as when I lost Outlook Express. Outlook 2010

Chuck,

Save your money for another chess set, no need to upgrade Jaws.

But, my friend, you are going to be more and more at risk in trying to
hold on to XP with its security support ending in a bit over two months.
You will be increasingly vulnerable to exploits.

TYou might be able to look around and find the Windows Live Mail 2009
version which does not have a ribbon menu, although the newer ribbon
version is certainly accessible. I won't deny that it isn't as
user-friendly as Outlook Express. But, I have a lot of personal data and
I don't want to risk it with XP. I am migrating to a new PC at this time.

Hello Mellissa and list
While on the topic of SMA. Can someone from FS who is a
member of the list
perhaps explain the SMA structure. After a little
investigation it seems
that the SMA policy is applied differently in different
countries, so does
the dealer have a choice how he applies the policy. For
example:
in my country I wanted to upgrade from JFW v14 to v15 and
the quote which I
got had a further option to take one SMA which would entitle
me to JFW V16.
A friend in the US made a similar enquiry there and was told
that one cannot
upgrade from v14 to v15 and take just one SMA but that one
must purchase

V15 and then pay for 2 SMA's (V16 and V17).
I hope someone can clear things up.

could get into these program settings but, you had to use your Jaws

I am asking if anyone who might be using drop box 2.65 are experiencing
any
issues that also use windows 7 home and jaws 15 latest?

I am having major issues here and it's making me crazy.

When drop box is in the tray, if I enter on it, and then open it, it
spits

me right back into the program I was or still am in. Like, my window's
mail
client. drop box does not open. So I can only think, it's this version
not

compatible with win/7 or jaws 15 latest.

Does anyone know the answer?

[JAWS-Users] JAWS 15 versus JAWS 14 for XP home?

2014-01-27 Thread Charles Rivard
When I do get the money to upgrade from JAWS 14, should I? Rather than listing
the new features, I would like some knowledgeable opinions on why or why I
should not upgrade. I'm using a machine that was built in 2000, which is
probably nothing compared to today's machines, but do not have the money for a
new one. And this machine does everything I want to do using Windows Home
edition with service pack 3 installed. I do not want to upgrade to Windows 7
or higher due to the extensive use of ribbons rather than pull down menus, as
they only confuse me although I do have JAWS 14 set to work with them in
Microsoft Office 2007. I also very strongly want to continue using Outlook
Express rather than any other Email client, as, to me, it is the most user
friendly if you cannot see what you're doing. Thanks in advance for the
responses.

I also feel the same way about Outlook Express. Is it possible to use
Outlook Express with Win.7 and if so how?
I have never been so lost as when I lost Outlook Express. Outlook 2010
does not compare or even run a close second, IMO.
I might still have a disk for MS Office Small Business that had Outlook
Express on it, if it was ever there to begin with.
Thank you for all ideas and help.

[JAWS-Users] insert combinations and other keystrokes bot working with HAWS 15

2014-01-26 Thread Charles Rivard
If I do not have any programs other than JAWS 14 running, nothing is spoken
when I press insert f10 or insert f11. Also, when in JAWS, if I try
accessing any menu, nothing is spoken. However, the results of these
keystrokes does appear on my Focus 40 Bluetooth braille display. I am running
XP Home with service pack 3 and JAWS 14, but not the professional edition. Any
thoughts or suggestions? Thanks.

Hi Liuda, when you get that message, turn on the jaws cursor and see
what's

at the top of the page.

When I do my updating (daily) I always get the suggestion to upgrade to
the

pay version. If you go to the top of the page with the jaws cursor, you
should see scan my computer, etc. otherwise, I'm not sure what's going on.

It is a nag screen. Of course, they do want to drive people toward buying
their pro version. I have no issue with the way the program performs
except that it has flagged legitimate programs before. Malware Bytes will
identify many of those same programs as PUP, for potentially unwanted
programs, but it isn't set up by default to delete those as super
antispyware did.

Not that I'm aware of, it obviously is important if you are going to use
that program to keep it updated.

Having said that, I dumped it a couple weeks ago and only use malware
bytes.

As a matter of fact, there was an article in Windows Secrets newsletter
about computer security. The author was not happy with Super
Antispyware's

performance, particularly because it did not uninstall properly or
completely using the normal Windows uninstall procedure. I experienced
similar issues when I dumped mine, I had to find a complete removal tool
from Super Antispyware because after I uninstalled using the normal
program
removal procedure in Windows Control Panel, my computer kept popping up
with

found new hardware wizzard. This is one of the several symptoms of an
incomplete uninstall of Super Antispyware.
