[JAWS-Users] Copying content from web page to word processor
I had to reinstall JAWS this week, and lost some settings. One involved copying from web pages. There's asetting that will copy just text, and not all the graphics off the web page, so that I get just the text in my word processor document. Does someone know where I can find that? [JAWS-Users] JAWS accessible Bibles, and more
A number of members of this list have been using Bibles from Optasia Ministry, and I want to alert new members to this resource. Thanks to the list owner for letting us post this information. We have designed a Bible format that works very well with JAWS, and works well on desktop and laptop computers as well as the Braille notetaker devices. We have 14 versions available, and are preparing to add a few more in the near future. Optasia Bibles are in HTML format so they run in Internet Explorer. You do not have to be online to use them. They run off files on your own hard drive. Each Bible opens with a table of contents page with links to all the books of the Bible. Each book has links to its chapters. Each chapter displays in full, with links to each verse. You can do exact word/phrase searches as well. And we will send you these Bibles free if you are blind. In addition, Optasia Ministry has a large library ofBible study tools, such as commentaries, and a variety of other Christian reading as well. All of it is free. Re: [JAWS-Users] office 2003 vs 2007
Lenny, I think JAWS works fine with both versions. I think the question is more a matter of which Word version you want to use. Some of us have upgraded for various reasons, and learned the new ribbon menus in Office 2007, and find it works very well with JAWS. But if 2003 is working well for you, there may be no need to upgrade. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS and Blank PDF Documents
Gerald, Japanese or Chinese script would still account for gibberish output. You might need to ask a sighted person if that is what is actually on the paper. Sometimes instructions are very small print, or not well printed. If it is very small, perhaps it could be enlarged on a copy machine, though I have found that my scanner and Open Book can scann rather small text. Open Book has this capability. When you are in Adobe, use Control P to print. But instead of the default printer, you should find, Freedom Import Printer. When you choose this printer to print to, Open Book will start, scan the pdf file as if it were a paper file in your scanner, and hopefully leave you with readable text. Re: [JAWS-Users] Bible software with JAWS 11
Wayne, It depends partly on what you want to do with this software. Optasia Ministry has 14 popular versions of the Bible in a form that works very well with JAWS on your desktop computer, as well as notetakers. These Bibles are HTML files, that you store on your hard drive, and they run in Internet Explorer. After setting up the Bible as one of your favorites, you will have easy access to links to books, chapters and verses of the Bible. You will be able to search for specific words and phrases as well. So if you want a Bible to read, one in which it is easy to find a passage, these will work well for you. We have these same 14 versions in a form that is designed for the Victor Stream Reader. These same versions are also available in rtf format, for basic access with any screen reader. The Optasia Bibles do not have links to other study resources. However, if you receive the entire Optasia Library, you will be able to make use of a variety of good commentaries, as well as have access to reading material on a variety of topics related to the Bible. We have about 800 books in the library now, and songs and worship resources as well. If you want to see the complete listing of the Optasia Library, you can visit our website: www.optasiaministry.org We send out all our materials free, since the ministry depends on donations for its support. You may email me directly if you have questions, or want a copy of a Bible or the library. tom@optasiaministry.org Blessings, Tom > Date: Sun, 30 May 2010 21:48:40 -0600 > From: "Wayne Scott" > To: > Subject: [JAWS-Users] bible software with Jaws 11 > Message-ID: <4ebd0e332d1d4361b2bd84e8de898...@diamondstar> > Content-Type: text/plain;charset="iso-8859-1" > > What bible software works well with Jaws 11" Wayne Scott > "A merry heart does good like medicine, but a broken spirit dries > the bones." > > Get Free Email with Video Mail & Video Chat! http://www.juno.com/freeemail?refcd=JUTAGOUT1FREM0210 For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
[JAWS-Users] Follow up to Stuttering JAWS
In an earlier post I noted a problem in which JAWS seemed to get stuck on a single syllable, which it kept repeating like a motor boat, hanging up the computer. I got some good help from Freedom Scientific. The solution they suggested was to go to the start up page in configuration manager, and disable all the start up programs. Then, they said, I could enable them one by one till I found the one that would cause the problem. With everything disabled, my computer runs fine. I'm not missing anything important that I can notice, so I don't plan to enable any more than I have to. A couple things enabled themselves in the list, and I had to check my virus and spam protection. But I have not had a problem in almost two weeks now. So,three cheers for Freedom Scientific tech support! [JAWS-Users] Stuttering JAWS
For a long time now, JAWS will stumble over a single syllable in a line. Occasionally JAWS will get stuck on a single syllable, and the computer locks up, and the only way out is to power off the computer. A few days ago it went into the stuttering mode, but came out of it again. But then it kept doing it, so I had to reboot, and it took two more reboots before it got better. [JAWS-Users] RE Jaws friendly topical Bible
All Optasia Library materials are free. Since we must restrict who gets this material, by law, we cannot make it available for download from our website. optasiaministry.org we only send it out on DVD to those who qualify, that is to those who are blind or have a visual disability I noted the NIV Study Bible resources in my previous post. We also have fourteen versions available in the Optasia Bible format. One of these is The Message. The Optasia Bibles run from your hard drive in Internet Explorer, so you have easy links to books, chapters and verses. The Optasia Bibles are ideal for finding and reading passages, and work well on the note takers too. Last September we released the Optasia Bible Collection, which puts all 14 versions in a single package, allowing users to easily compare readings in all the versions. The library contains the Bibles, over 700 other books, and worship resources that include over 1,000 hymn and song texts. If you want the Optasia Library, or any part of it, send me an email at tom@optasiaministry.org. State in the email whether you are blind or have a visual disability, and give me your mailing address, and I'll send it out to you. If you want just a single Optasia Bible I can make that available through a large file transfer service (YouSendIt.com). Pressing H for headings, or U for unvisited links won't get me to the search results either. I'm using JAWS 11. Does anybody know what might cause this? Re: [JAWS-Users] tax software
I've always done my own taxes, and am tired of Turdo Tax charging me for e filing, so this year I am using the IRS forms. So far I'm reasonably impressed. You download pdf forms in which you can enter the data. For help, you can go to the IRS website. This method probably is best used by those who know how to use the IRS forms, or be willing to spend plenty of time reading. The up side, is, that after you do it this way for a year or two, it will not be very difficult. Blessings, Tom Diet Help Cheap Diet Help Tips. [JAWS-Users] JAWS conflict with Office 2007
I am using JAWS 11 on a Dell laptop, running Vista The problem began when we did some things to try to speed up a sluggish computer. When JAWS is running, I cannot start MS Word or Excell. I can start JAWS after MS Word is running, and it works, but I cannot use Excell at all. Other Office programs run fine: IE, Outlook The error message says Windows is looking online for a solution, but then I get no answer, just the option to close the program I did a repair on JAWS with no success. I tried a system restore, but that did not help. MS office was updated during the earlier process, so it is current. Below is a list of things we did during the process of trying to improve computer performance. Maybe that will give you an idea of something we can do. Perhaps the final solution will be to reinstall MS Office, but I am hoping someone might have a better idea before I go to that option. Here is the list of things I did as I tried to increase computer performance: 1) Disabled almost all plug ins in Internet Explorer except plug ins by Microsoft or Adobe. 2) Ran Microsoft update. There were no critical or hardware updates. Also updated MS Office. 3) Defragmented the hard drive. 4) Updated the anti-virus database. 5) Uninstalled various programs including, but not limited to: Google Desktop, everything by Google except Google Earth. 6) Viewed startup items, in particular items initiated by Windows registry keys. Unchecked a few items I'm pretty sure I unchecked Windows Media Player if it was on the list. There was an HP web printing program I disabled or uninstalled. 7) In one of the configuration windows concerning bootup, it was configured to do a special boot process. I changed it to a "Normal" boot process, but I later noticed it had gone back to a previous value. I'm not sure what that was all about. 8) I changed performance settings from "automatic" to "optimized for performance." This removed many special effects about window shading, button styles, etc. The environment appeared more similar to older versions of Windows. 9) Went into the C drive properties, unchecked the box that said something like "index for faster searching", and I instructed it to apply the settings to all subfolders and files. I went into the Indexing control panel menu and limited indexing to the fewest possible files. I also explicitly removed indexing for files with extensions .pst, .psm, and .xml. After this change, Outlook provided a warning saying that the indexing was not being run against outlook. I acknowledged the warning and instructed Outlook not to produce the warning again. 10) I disabled the Indexing service. 11) Installed the newest Adobe Reader. I didn't explicitly uninstall the previous one, so I hope the installer was smart enough not to mess that up. When I started, the laptop had instability issues with Internet Explorer, ran slower than I would have expected, and occasionally the explorer.exe process would lock up when you try to click on the Start menu. It would take a full minute or two before the start menu would start working again. The hard drive access light appeared to be unusually active during this period of time. The most effective changes may have been: disabling Internet Explorer add-ons; uninstalling Google Desktop (it performs a duplicate service to Windows Indexing), disabling the fancy Vista graphics, and disabling Indexing. I don't know how much Indexing really affected the performance, but I didn't like a laptop randomly accessing the hard drive beyond normal usage. However, it is enabled, it probably won't slow things down much. Without knowing exactly how JAWS works, I suspect the following changes are the most likely to have caused trouble, starting with the most likely: 1) I might have accidentally uninstalled or disabled startup of a program that JAWS relied on (possibly due to conditions previously unknown). 2) When I upgraded MS Office, that broke the interaction with JAWS 3) By changing the Vista graphics, I broke the interface between JAWS and the windows graphics. 4) By uninstalling programs, a random file was changed or deleted, possibly a dll. Google Desktop may have touched files somewhat deep in Windows. Shortly before I left, I started to take special note of a process that had the name "proxy." I believe that the process was executed by JAWS, but after JAWS exits, the proxy continues to run. As a guess, I suspect that it might act as a proxy to standard windows library API calls, allowing JAWS to do what it needs to do. I would not be surprised if it is extremely difficult or impossible to safely end this process, which may be why JAWS leaves it running. Every time I saw the minute or two delay for the start menu to appear, I believe this process was running. Therefore, for the best performance, it may be necessary to reboot the laptop every time JAWS is closed. There are a ton of programs that run on startup. Most of them don't do much
[JAWS-Users] RE. Bible Software
Cory, At Optasia Ministry we have a set of Bibles that work well on a desktop computer as well as a device such as the PAC Mate. We have 14 Bible versions available . Each Bible is in html format, so they run in Internet Explorer. There are easy links to books, chapters and verses, and limited search capability. If you want a Bible to read, in which it is easy to find a specific passage, this will work very well for you. We also have all 14 versions in a single collection that will allow you to easily compare readings in various versions. These same versions are also available in an html format designed for the Victor Stream Reader, and in rtf format for use in any screen reader. You may have any one version, or all of them. We also have a library of about 500 books that provide a variety of reading and Bibles study helps. All of our material is free. [JAWS-Users] A quirk of the spell checker with JAWS
You may have figured this out already, but I discovered something helpful in using the MS Word spell checker with JAWS. Often, when I am spell checking JAWS will not read the text in the window, or tell me what words to substitute. It sometimes keeps reading the previous problem it flagged instead of the one it's really on. But I found that if I simply tab once, and then shift tab back, JAWS will read the problem area normally. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS-Users-List Digest, Vol 50, Issue 24
Albert, I don't know any way of getting Office 2007 on 2 computers legally without purchasing two licenses. It is possible to buy a multi license copy, but that is still likely to cost more than 2 licenses. The trial version that came with your computer may be the cheapest way to go for that one. If you try to install Office 2007 with the same product key on two computers, you will be denied the second time around. This is because, when you install you have to connect online to Microsoft, and they keep track of that sort of thing. The cost is steep, but a place like Best Buy is likely your best bet. There are websites that offer deeply discounted copies of Office by download, but I would not trust them Since Office 2003 is giving you some problems, the change might be worth it. Office 2007 has a bit of a learning curve, because it uses ribbon menus instead of pull down menus, but I have found that it is not difficult to learn, and works very well with JAWS 9 and especially with JAWS 10. If you take that step and want some hints on adapting to the 2007 format, feel free to contact me. Re: [JAWS-Users] how much RAM for Office 2007
Cher, I think 2 GB is enough, and the computer person I work with says it is. I'm using 3 GB, and it gets a little slow when I'm working with large documents, such as books that are 1,000 pages. But memory is rather inexpensive, so a little extra doesn't hurt. A hint. If your Recycle bin is too full, that can slow down file access in XP. Just empty the recycle bin occasionally. If you have JAWS set to the laptop keyboard setting, the caps lock key becomes the JAWS key. As you hold the caps lock key with your left fifth finger, the keys under your right hand become navigation reading keys. JAWS key plus I, reads the current line U, reads the previous line O, reads the next line Then, JAWS key plus K, reads the current word J, reads the previous word L, reads the next word And JAWS key plus comma, reads the current letter M, reads the previous letter period, reads the next letter Note that if you press the caps lock key twice quickly, it toggles the caps lock feature. If you don't want all letters capitalized, just tap the caps lock key twice quickly and you'll be back to normal typing mode. I'm wondering if someone would be willing to answer a couple questions and give me some information that will help us provide useful resources. I know that the Victor Rreader will read rtf files. So if I provide someone with the Bible, with each book in its individual file, how does one navigate and find a specific passage with the VSR? Is there a better way to provide the Bible. For example, would a single RTF file of the entire Bible be better than each book in a separate file? Second, can the VSR read html files. We have several versions of the Bible in html format with easy links to books, chapters and verses. Can one use the VSR to click on links and move to different parts of the Bible? [JAWS-Users] RE. Question about Office 2007
David, While there is a learning curve to Office 2007, I don't think it is a big one. The tutorial mentioned before is available. But here's what I have done without the tutorial. Give yourself a couple hours when you aren't trying to get a particular job done. Open a document or make a short new one. Then explore. First choose Alt f, for the File menu. Then tab or arrow through the options. Whenever you come across one that you need to know, make a note of it. Keep this list of notes as a separate document. Then choose Alt E, for the Home ribben menue. Tab through the options there, noting on your list, the things you want to remember for future use. As you go through, listen to what JAWS tells you about the key combinations for various commands. This is what you want to take notes on. After you finish with the Home menu, Choose Alt E again, but rather than tab, use the right arrow. This will bring you to the next ribbon menu, which you can explore by tabbing through the options. You can explore each of the ribbon menus this way. You will learn the most common key combinations quickly, and for those that you use less often, your document with all the notes is the first place you will turn. Note also that many of the commands you learned in previous versions of Office will work in 2007. For example, Alt T S, will bring up the spell checker. Alt O F will bring up the font menu Alt O C will bring up the columns menu I'm sure that with a couple hours of exploring, you will feel much more confident. I am not an expert with Office, but feel free to email me with specific questions. [JAWS-Users] RE Inconsistencies between JAWS 10 and Word 2007
Chris, I find this frustrating too. I've noted difficulties with the spell checker when I previously used Office 2000, and previous versions of JAWS as well. So I'm sorry I know of no fix, but I suspect it's something FS would have to work on. Have you communicated with their tech support? [JAWS-Users] RE JAWS and Biblical Greek
Mark, I can't give you all the answers, so as someone else mentioned, a call to Freedom Scientific might be helpful. As the director of Optasia Ministry, I can tell you that we have made some effort to help those who want to read Biblical Greek. First, if you are using a Pac Mate or some other Braille display, you will be able to read the Biblical Greek, by learning a few symbols. An alpha in Greek is the same as an A in English. A beta is the same as a B. But some Greek characters don't have an exact equivalent in English text. That's why there are a few extra symbols. If you are reasonably fluent at reading Graille, you may wish to explore this option. We can provide you with the Greek text in Braille reading format, or you can visit the site of the Bartimaeus Alliance for the Blind, which is where we got the material. Second, I have made some effort to adjust the Greek text into a form that will sound similar to the way we normally pronounce the Greek words. This means, for example, I have changed the Braile reading character for theta into "th".This may be helpful for reading, but if you use this in seminary studies you will need to understand the changes I have made to the text so that you can understand the text properly. Then, I want you to know that Optasia Ministry has a significant library of study resources that will help you in your studies. We have Introductions to the Old and New Testament. Theologies of the Old and New Testament The Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament and the Theological Dictionary of the New Testament (single volume) which will enable you to do individual word studies. We have a variety of Bible translations. We have some very important commentaries available, such as the New International Commentary on the New Testament (adding that right now), Many volumes of the Word Biblical Commentary series, and most of the NIV Application Commentary, among others. In addition you will find books on leadership, apologetics, homiletics, prayer and spirituality, pastoral care and a number of devotional books. We offer this material free of charge. If you would like to receive the library: Send me your name and mailing address A simple statement that you are blind or have a visual disability And your preference for receiving the material on a single DVD or a set of three CD's. [JAWS-Users] RE Ms Word 2003 printing pages
There are actually two ways of doing this. 1. Some printers can do duplex printing, but that's an expense you don't need to make for a small amount of printing. 2. In the MS Word Print menu there are two ways to do this. a. Alt G will allow you to type in the specific pages you want to print. I often do this for small documents. First I enter 6,4,2 and print. Turn the pages over manually and enter 1,3,5. When I do it in this order, they come out in order. 2. The second way is to tab down to the, Printt combo box. [JAWS-Users] RE Upgrading to Office 2007
If employees in a large organization like NML are being expected to switch to Office 2007, it begs the question to tell them not to upgrade. That is not a possibility, and telling them not to upgrade does them a disservice. I'm not an expert with Office, but with a relatively short learning curve, I've been able to make the switch over and do quite well with it. If you have a choice on your personal computer about whether to upgrade to Office 2007, and 2000 or 2003 are working well for you, I would advise that you don't spend the money. I don't see that 2007 offers any great advantages over the previous versions. But wen employees are going to have to adapt to changes in their companies, we on this list owe them the encouragement that it can be done, and it does not take super human effort, just a modest amout of time to learn the new methods. My office computer has Office 2007, and my home computer has Office 2000. I can switch back and forth between them and do the same tasks without difficulty. Blessings, Tom Stuck in a dead end job?? [JAWS-Users] RE Jaws and Office 2007
Mar,, I made the switch from Office 2000 to Office 2007 in January with JAWS 9, and recently upgraded to JAWS 10. I have found that JAWS 9 works very well with Office 2007, and JAWS 10 resolved a problem I had reading in Access. Perhaps the biggest issue in making the switch to Office 2007 is the change to ribbon menus. Please encourage your people that using Office 2007 is very doable. There is a learning curve with the change to ribbon menus. Many of the key strokes are the same as previous versions. Alt T, plus S, still puts you in the spell checker. Alt O, plus C still opens the columns menu window. Alt O, plus F still brings up the font window. I urge new users of Office 2007 to set aside some time to explore. Then, as they discover how to access the commands they need to use, prepare a "cheat sheet" to which they can go back to, until the commands are committed to memory. I've been using JAWS 9 with Office 2007 for all of 2008, and find it works very well. Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws and using word 2007
I'm using Office 2007, especially Word, and some Excell and a little Access. I find it works very well with JAWS 9. If you are going to use Office 2007, you'd be best off with JAWS 9, rather than an earlier version of JAWS. JAWS 10 will help with that too when it comes out. Some key strokes are the same. Navigation keys for reading are the same. Control s still saves a file Alt O, plus F still brings yu to the font window Alt T plus S still brings up the spell checker. However, there are quite a number of changes. But let me assure you, that if you are patient, and spend some time when you are not pressed to get work done, you will be able to manage quite well. When I began I made myself a cheet sheet file. When I had to search through the ribbon menu to find an option, I would record it on my cheat sheet. Then I could go back to it when I needed it. By now, I am using the common ones without any need to refer to the cheat sheet. If Office 2000 or 2003 is working well for you, there is probably no need to upgrade, but if you are going to switch, the new version is very accessible. [JAWS-Users] RE JAWS and Office 2007
Hannah asks if Office 2007 is better than Office 2003. My answer would be that if Office 2003, or even Office 2000 is working well for you, you won't find any great advantage in upgrading. In many ways it does the same things, so there is no pressure to run out and upgrade. But for those who do have to deal with Office 2007, JAWS 9 works well with it, and JAWS 10 beta 2 has improved it. Sometimes we grumble about Microsoft monopoly, but that kind of market share also gives them the freedom to put money into accesibility. I was sitting on an airplane awhile back with my Pac Mate in my lap, and a man came down the aisle, noticed my machine, and noted that he worked for Microsoft in their accessibility division. A company that is fighting for its market share may not be able to provide as much accessibility. [JAWS-Users] RE JAWS ad Office 2007
I am mostly familiar with MS Word, and after about 9 months with it, I like it. There is a learning curve, but if you can take some time without having to get a job done, you can pick it up. I recommend that you make yourself a cheat sheet. That is, when you figure out how to do something, make a note of it on the cheat sheet, so you can find that information back quickly. After awhile you will learn the common commands and will be breezing along. Note that some keyboard commands are the same as previous Office versions. Alt T plus S still gets you into the spell checker. Alt O plus F gets you into the font menue Alt O plus C gets you to the columns menu You still have the menus across the top of the screen. Alt P brings you to the Page menu. Then you will tab through all the options there. As you find the ones that you need, record them on your cheat sheet. The Tabs menu is one that was a little difficult to find. Alt P, plus PG, then Alt T If you choose Alt P to get to the page menu, you can use your arrow keys to move across the top of the screen to the other menus, then tab through them to find the options you are looking for. This way you will also learn the key combinations to get to those menus. When you land on an option, listen carefully, and JAWS will tell you the key combinations to get there. [JAWS-Users] JAWS 10 and custmer support
We all have frustrations with software, but I want to write a note of appreciation for Freedom Scientific's work on JAWS 10. I had an issue with JAWS 9 not reading parts of an MS Access data base. JAWS 10 beta release 1 addressed part of it, but not all, so I sent in a report. I received a phone call from one of the programmers. He asked me to send him the data base (a custome design). Then he called me back and we talked through a few steps until he had JAWS working correctly with it. The latest release for the beta version is reading everything in the data base. I'm sure there are few software developers who give attention to that kind of customer support. Patti, I'm not sure what you mean by "getting past the template:, Patti. I'll suggest an answer, but get back to me if you need more help. When you've worked your way through the folders, and find the template folder, you are looking for a file called Normal.dot Since you are using Word 2003, the template extension is different than Lisa who is using Word 2007. When you are in the list view of folders you should be able to arrow down until JAWS says you are on the Normal.dot file. At that point you can press the delete key, and when asked if you want to delete this file, choose the Yes option. [JAWS-Users] RE Jaws 9 is very sluggish in MS Word 2007 (Lisa)
Lisa, Since I haven't seen any response to your question, I'm going to take a stab at it. I'm using Office 2007 with Windows XP and it works very well, so I don't think waiting for JAWS 10 is the answer. Plus that's a ways off yet. I had a similar problem awhile back. For some reason the Normal template gets messed up and causes slow down problems. The Normal template is the file Word goes to every time you choose to start a new, blank document. You simply need to delete the Normal template. Word will create a new one, so you don't have to worry about losing something essential. Or if you are concerned about this simply cut and paste the file to a different, temporary location. It can be deleted later after you know you do not need it. Here's what you can do. Open My Computer/Windows Explorer. Go to the Local, C drive Find the Documents and Settings folder and open it. Then you will need to find the correct folder for your computer. There will be folders like, Administrator All users, Default User. On my computer I need to look under a folder called Tom, but of course that will be different on your computer. If you are unsure just look in each of the folders for the following folders and search through them until you find the right one with the normal template in it. The next folder you need is called Application Data In that folder you will find another one called Microsoft In the Microsoft folder you will find a folder called Templates When you open this folder you will find a folder called Normal.dotm Then you can do one of two things: 1. Delete it 2. Or if you want to keep it around for safety sake to restore it if need be, you can cut and paste it to a different, temporary location. When this is done, restart Word and see if this helps. [JAWS-Users] RE I have a new laptop
I can understand that you might want to drop Vista if you have had that many problems, but not all of us have those kind of issues with Vista. It's a new OS and It's not surprising that some of us have issues and that we run into glitches. But I wouldn't throw out Vista because of minor problems, and I think I heard that is where this original thread started. Vista requires some time to learn, as does Office 2007, but unless Vista gets scrapped, we are all going to have to deal with it in the years ahead. So my recommendation is that we make a distinction between major problems and the minor glitches, Distinguish between problems that make Vista useless and those that need to patiently follow the learning curve. Dave here. Personally, my expirences with Windows Vista have been absolutely horrid, mostly with program incompatibility issues, and hardware just not working with it. It did not like JAWS of any version, and for the month I had it, it was a non stop headache of one problem after another, including hardware crashes, program crashes, and a total inability to use my computer at all. I finally got fed up with it, and had my rehab officer send my machine back to Dell, and had XP SP3 put back on it. I just got it back a few weeks ago, and have had no problems at all since. And since my machine is a Dell Vostro 1500 with 2 GB of ram, a Intel Dual core processor, and a 145 GB hard drive, that was originally desinged to handle the rigors of Vista, XP SP3 runs on it like a top. Imho, I would drop Vista like a hot potato, and go back to XP. [JAWS-Users] RE I have a new laptop
I'm using a laptop with Vista, Office 2007 and JAWS 9 I also use a desktop with XP, Office 2007 and JAWS 9 On the laptop I have noticed an occasional problem with the Alt F4 combination not working. It's a little irritating, but There are other ways around it that are quite quick. Shutting down the computer can be done with the Windows Key to open the main menu, then pressing U to get to the shut down menu. Vista and Office 2007 have some significant changes, and if you are new to them they can be rather frustrating. Remember that many of the key strokes you used in previous versions of Office still work in 2007. Alt O and then F brings you to the Font menu. Alt T and then S opens the spell checker. I stayed with XP on my desk top because of familiarity, but i have come to really like Office 2007. I recommend that those who are new to Office 2007 take some time, when they don't have to get something done and explore. The menus are different, and you just have to learn a few new ways of getting to things. Alt P brings you to the Page menu and then you can tab through the various options there. As you do, take note of the actions you use, and record them on a separate cheat sheet that you can go back to quickly for reference. Eventually you will learn the key strokes and you won't need the cheat sheet as much. The menu's on the top of the screen have different names. But if you go to the Page menu, for example, you can arrow across to the other menus, learn their names and tab through the options under them The Home menu, for example, contains the old Edit menu items. There is a Mailing Tab where you will find the envelope and label options, instead of under the old Tool menu. I think Office 2007 is doable for us since Microsoft has made virtually everything accessible for us. [JAWS-Users] RE Word and XL 2007
There will be some differences, but yu will find that many of the keyboard commands you've been using still work in Office 2007. I use Word intensively and Excell a little. I was able to switch from Office 2000 to Office 2007 without a great deal of trouble. In Word, for example, Alt O, F still brings you to the Font menu. Alt O, C still brings you to the columns menu In Excell the Alt plus Equals command gives you a quick way to total a column. However Microsoft has changed things in 2007. Fortunately they are still quite concious of accessibility. I think this is one of the advantages of a near monopoly. They have the money and resources to care about accessibility, which companies which are cutting the margin close cannot do. I'm not a big Microsoft fan, but I do appreciate what they do for us. That being said, when you get Office 2007 you will not have the familiar pull down menus. The names have changed and the locations of some of the items you need will be hard to find. But only for awhile. Make sure you give yourself some time to look around when you aren't rushing to get a project finished. Alt P, for exampel, will bring you the the Page Layout tab. Then you will tab through the various options there. As you reach an option you want to use, JAWS will tell you the key combinations to get there faster. I suggest you compile a "cheat sheet" -- a summary of the commands you need. For awhile you will refer back to it, but you will soon reach a point that you know the commands from memory and you will soon become comfortable with 2007, just as you are with 2003. To change volume on my laptop with Windows Vista this is what I do. Press Windows Key plus M to get to the desk top. Tab four times to the notification area. Up arrow twice and press enter. The volume can then be adjusted with the up and down arrow keys. Your notification area may be different than mine, but after you tab four times, use the up or down arrows till JAWS tells you it is on the volume control. Then press Enter. [JAWS-Users] Re Word problem
I'm using JAWS 9 and Word 2007. Temp files show up here too. Whenever you work on a Word file, it seems Word creates that temp file. I don't know the reason for it, but it is always there. When I save and exit the file, sometimes the temp file disappears and sometimes it doesn't. I occasionally have to delete some of the temp files manually. I jumped from Word 2000 to 2007, and had the same thing happen in both. However, the problem of getting hung up in Word and having the use the end task option is a new one for me. Sorry I can't help on that., but one thing I've found helpful several times is the Google the problem. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and Phonenumbers
Hi, I do something like you mention here. I divide the numbers up, using the numerals. I can remember 3 or four numerals at a time. I also get rid of the parentheses and dashes most people use, since they just confuse me. Note too that you can left justify the text with Control L and right justify the text with Control R JAWS will say, Alighn left, or Align right. Re: [JAWS-Users] Laptop and num pad
JAWS is designed to work on laptops. In the setup you have to choose the laptop keyboard option. Then the caps lock key becomes the JAWS key, and you can use it in combination with several other letter keys to navigate, as you do with the desktop keyboard num pad. You can connect a standard keyboard to the laptop if you wish, but I won't comment on that since I haven't done it. Re: [JAWS-Users] about email
It's probably not the fault of the message or sender. There is a defect in Windows Mail, the Vista e-mail program that causes this glitch. The only way I know of to solve this is to use Windows Explorer to go into Documents and Settings and find the folder, Inbox, for example, where this undeleteable e-mail is, and delete that folder. Vista will create a new folder on its own. Note that any other emails in that folder will also be gone, so save them first. I had this happen to me three times before I gave up on Windows Mail and went to Outlook 2007 Blessings, Tom On Mon, 17 Mar 2008 20:57:30 -0500 "larry mcdonald" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: > I got a message from the group about free brail cook book and now I > can not delete the message or move it to another folder I come up > with an unexpted error and nothing I seem to do works. the message > came from John Malia, I was under the understanding that we were not > suppose to put stuff like this in the group email. Re: [JAWS-Users] Experience with Microsoft Office 2007
Office 2007 still has menus, but they operate different and are named different. Some of the old keyboard commands work, for example, Alt O, F still brings you to the Font page. But we now have to deal with ribbon menus. Alt P will put you in the page layout tab, and then you will tab through the options on the ribbon menu. As you do this you will learn the keyboard commands that will get you there quicker. For example, Alt p, o will bring you to your page orientation options. It's not a long learning curve. Re: [JAWS-Users] Experience with Microsoft Office 2007
There's a learning curve with Office 2007, but Microsoft is conscious of accessibility issues. Give yourself some time to explore and learn the system. Many keyboard commands from previous Office versions work in 2007 as well, but there are a few to learn. I recommend you spend some time with it, and make a reference file of all the commands you want to use for quick reference. Blessings, Tom On Mon, 3 Mar 2008 07:28:37 -0500 "Erin B.
