Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS keeps wanting me to authorize it
Thank you for the information. I did contact FS about my problem. They did say that they had multiple people call in about the Webroot problem just like me and they explained it wasn't just a problem for JAWS users, but lots of people who ran Webroot. It was the update to the Webroot software and whether you removed the threat or quaranteened the threat, there were problems all around and people from Webroot are still trying to figure out a solution. For anyone having the same problem and if they use Webroot, FS told me to delete Webroot and either use Windows Defender or Vipre but Windows Defender was more highly recommended. FS told me that some people look down on Windows Defender because it is free to use but the person I spoke to had used both Windows Defender and Vipre and what Vipre didn't catch, Windows Defender did. Also, I have been using the Home version of JAWS and it would keep coming up professional version. FS said it was because of the Webroot update. I have three versions of JAWS on my PC-16, 17, and 18. I was told by FS that since I was able to use version 16 well and it stayed as the home version that Webroot was effecting version 17 and 18. I did have need of sighted help because JAWS would not work properly with version 18 so they couldn't use Tandum because of that or they would have. The sighted help was that FS put out an update because of the Webroot problem. I had my husband go to the FS website and go to downloads and then install the update and run it. We restarted the PC and all is well now. I was unable to go to JAWS 18 and go to the help menu and then go to check for updates. It did say that I had the latest update but when we went to the about section in JAWS 18, it was not the latest version FS put out so that is why my husband had to go to the FS website and download the latest version. My husband could use my PC just fine and he had to be using JAWS 18 to download the update. Even if JAWS 16 was working fine for me, I had to use version 18 so that is why I needed sighted help but it was impossible to move around with version 18 when trying to use JAWS. [JAWS-Users] JAWS keeps wanting me to authorize it
Just today after a message from Webroot came up for me to get rid of a threat, JAWS would say it needed to be authorized. Now I have gone through the steps several times and more with what I am about to write plus if I would update the authorization JAWS would not allow me to move around the screen but only remain on the Desktop each and every time and would not allow me to read the dialog screens so I had to have sighted help. No matter how many times clicking on OK and updating authorization, either it would not go through and if it did, the same authorization screen would come up. Some times it would say the authorization would fail and other times it would go through just fine. I used the internet option and my authorization code was in each time so that wasn't the problem. I turned off the computer and I also tried resetting it many times but the same messages would come up. If I uninstalled JAWS 18 and reset the computer and used a different version the same message would come up. The only thing I can do that seems to work is not turn JAWS off and not turn the computer off and not reset the computer. I can turn JAWS 18 off and then turn an earlier version on of JAWS on but I can't turn JAWS 18 off and then reset the computer to use an earlier version or even have JAWS 18 uninstalled and then reset the computer to use an earlier version. I'd like to have this resolved as soon as I can. I'd like to turn off the computer when not in use but if I do that even if JAWS 18 is uninstalled the same message will come up like I have said. I'm not sure why I can turn off version 18 and then go to an earlier version and then things will be fine. Any suggestions? I will call and get help if need be but I'd like to see if others had similar problems. [JAWS-Users] Alternative to Dropbox for sharing files
I am on an online community forum and a project is to have a print book put into audio format. Many people are reading different chapters of the book so the audio files may be different. The book is being put into audio format because there is not presently a audio version of it to be had. However, the audio files would be shared among sighted and visually impaired/blind persons alike. So far the only idea is to have a Dropbox account and share the folder but then some people may not have or want a Dropbox account. I would like to know if there is any alternative to Dropbox to share a folder/files with others so others can listen to the book and it also be accessible for those with vision loss. If I need to clarify anything please let me know and I'll do my best. Melissa For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] question regarding Verizon email service
I just spoke with a lady from Verizon since I have phone and internet from them. She did say that Verizon will no longer be handling email and that AOL will be doing so. She said it was an automatic change and I didn't need to change my email address so I could keep nightfur...@verizon.net. I asked if I could still send from this email address and also receive emails from others if they use that email address and she said yes. She asked me if I received an email from Verizon stating the changes and I said no. She said they are sending them out to everyone so I should eventually get one. She also said if I sign into the webmail that a pop-up should come up and I would need to fill out a form to make the changes. I went to my webmail and no pop-up and I searched the page for something to click on to make changes but there was nothing at all so I'm not sure what to do but wait for an email because I think there are to be steps to do in the email to make changes. I'm not sure if it is automatic why to fill out a form and also I'm receiving emails from companies I subscribe to stating if you are a Verizon email user to change your email address because if automatic why change? Oh and she said if you use Verizon internet but change your email to a gmail account and I think yahoo, she said you could lose emails. Hit the home key to go to the first icon on your desktop. 3. Hit the letter J and you should be on Jaws 16 if you have it installed. If not then you should be on Jaws 17 if you do not have any other icon starting with j. If you have Jaws 16 and Jaws 17 loaded then hit the j twice to get to Jaws 17. 4. Re: [JAWS-Users] some links won't open in new format
Yes sir, form fields are what we type in, they are essentially the way JFW indicates that one is in an editable area. When I attempted to activate the links you indicated, JFW made the sound typical of that made when entering a form field. It did not activate the link at all. Let me know if this wasn't clear enough. It is a strange issue, so I can understand your confusion. The reaction of JFW to these new links is totally unexpected and irrelevant to what it should be doing. Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Office
I can tell you that Office 2010 works well with Jaws, though you'll notice a few changes. You can probably purchase authorization keys from Microsoft for much less than repurchasing the full program suites though. I'm sure others will know where older versions of Office can be purchased, but the newer versions do work well. Good luck. I need to be able to open .doc files from Microsoft Word. My dilemma is this. My computer came with Office Home and Student 2010 Starter. It worked sort of. Now, Microsoft has disabled the Starter Pack programs and we have to figure out what to do. I used Office 2007 but lost the authorization when my old computer suddenly died. Does anyone know where I can purchase 2003 or 2007 now and will it work with Jaws 15 or does anyone have experience with Office 2010 and 2013? All I really need is Word or some way to open .doc files. What would your recommendation be? Oh yes. If there is a way to move that old 2007 authorization, I was able to retrieve the hard drive in tact so do have that copy. I just don’t know how to gain access to it. I have watched this conversation, and I think it was me that started it. I have been using it on multiple computers, for at least 5 years. I have never had any trouble installing, using, or manipulating it in any capacity. Since the installation all those years ago, I have never had a virus, cookie, or spyware that wasn't blocked immediately. It does cost around $50 or so to install, but this covers multiple computers. It runs seamlessly in the background, with a accessible monthly report at the beginning of each month. It also blocks websites that have been known to operate with suspicious activity. Honestly, I've never had something I couldn't do with Jaws. Of course, I've been running the current version each time I renew. By far, it is the best antivirus/protection service I've used. It makes it so you need not think about it, at all. No, it is a paid subscription, that covers up to three computers/laptops. Since using it, I have had absolutely no security issues whatsoever. Re: [JAWS-Users] Office 2010 verses 2007
Yes, the major difference is the ribbon. It operates in essentially the same way as the Menu bar, but instead of having 7 major menus across the top in a row, there is a different layout to them. It sounds like you have prior experience with these ribbons, so I won't bore you with the details unless you ask. All the hot keys you have learned from previous versions of Office still work, though I believe there are some new ones added Other than this, there are no significant differences, at least as far as direct operation is concerned. I have been using Office 2010 for about 4 years now, and I have no complaints. If you can think of specific questions, I'd be glad to answer them for you. I have also noticed that recently, the PDF's are also very unstable. While I think PDF's have come a long way in their accessibility, recently I have had some frustrations with them as well. [JAWS-Users] JAWS saying 'paragraph mark' and 'new line' in Word
I have Windows XP and JAWS 12. Just the other day I was using Microsoft Word and when I would hit the enter key, in-between the lines JAWS would say 'paragraph mark' and also 'new line' I was looking at older documents of mine and those are doing the same thing even when this problem started a couple of days ago. I haven't changed any settings that I know of and I only think Microsoft is effected. If I send an attachment to someone that is from Microsoft Word, the document isn't showing up but, before JAWS started saying 'paragraph mark' and 'new line' the attachments showed up for others. Any help please of what I can do to have JAWS stop saying this and if it does, will people start to see the documents that I send to them? [JAWS-Users] Twitter's new webpage design, please help
Good morning friends. It has been awhile since I've bothered to play around with Twitter, primarily resulting from a lack of free time. One thing I've noticed since they've changed their webpage layout, is the lack of accessibility to accomplish certain tasks that used to be simple. For example, I would like to accept or decline a request to follow, but those buttons are now completely useless. I have tried getting around this issue via Twitter for IPhone, but to no avail, as that app doesn't even have a way to view and accept or decline requests. Does anyone have any suggestions for navigating this issue? I'd be very greatful. Re: [JAWS-Users] a new Laptop
Good afternoon. I would recommend the Dell Precision laptops. It's what I use for school, and it is a workhorse. It contains a quad-core processor, so it can handle the processor intensive programs such as JAWS without causing lags in running programs, i.e. Word. I often use many programs simultaneously, such as JAWS with Magic, with Open Book and/or Kurzweil to help me navigate tricky course work from classes like biochemistry, where having some visual representation is absolutely necessary. I am running Windows 7 Pro, with Jaws 12, and Office 2010, and have no troubles other than my own ineptness. The screen is large, 17 inches, which uses up a lot of battery life. I typically get 2 hours out of a battery, so I have two. It contains a very spacious keyboard, with a built-in number pad, so there is no need to plug one in. You can look up the specs, but I've had mine for almost one year, and it's never given me any trouble. If I can answer any further questions for you, please feel free to write. My course load is heavy, so be patient with my reply time. Re: [JAWS-Users] CONVERTING PPT TO A READABLE FORMAT
Good evening. I am a student as well, and use PPT's on a routine basis. You have several options; the best option is to scan it using either Kurzweil or Open Book. If you don't have either of those programs, I suggest you have the school help you obtain one. There are cheaper options, from companies such as Nuance, that will allow you to take a PPT file and turn it into a Word file, say, which you can then read. It will do this, maintaining all the layout and graphical information. I can help with steps in any or all of these solutions, please let me know what options are available to you. Warmly, Melissa P.S. It will be important to find a working solution for this issue, as you will encounter power points almost every day. Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows 7 Start Menu
I would like to add that the search bar Dan mentioned is, as he said, extremely useful. Not only can you type your program, but also web url's, document tittles, even search for particular emails through keywords. Play with it until you become comfortable, and you will find you use it more than the actual menu itself. Re: [JAWS-Users] Sorry, but I need to rant about v12 of JAWS!
I also have a fairly high end machine, with Windows 7, 64 bit, with a quad core processor, and have none of these problems you have mentioned. Are you sure it isn't with your settings, or available ram? I don't have any lag times, in fact, it's probably the most responsive version to date. I can't replicate any of the problems you mentioned. Try playing with your ram settings, and also check what programs you have running at startup, maybe that has something to do with the problems you're experiencing. Good morning, I've been a supporter of JAWS since version 2.x. Always have stayed up-to-date on my SMA. Never have I been totally dismayed with a major update until version 12.x. This has got to be the worst release of JAWS I've ever tried. First graphics it use to read as so, it now recognizes them as buttons. Quite irritating when you use quick navigation keys to jump to certain elements of a web page to read it faster. And it is quite the memory hog! JAWS 12.x crashes so much on my high-end Windows 7 machine, I've gone back to using 11.x. Think it has something to do with the Virtual Ribbon or new fangled Config manager, who knows. Anycase, it is very irritating to be reading a web page, only to have it go silent for 3 minutes, and then JAWS comes back. Sorry HJ, but I hate v12 of JAWS and have gone back to using v11.x perminantly. It's more stable and doesn't crash every 5 minutes. Wish you allowed us to switch the config manager back to the old one. Do away with using this new Virtual Ribbon. Give us a choice to switch them on and off. If I get booted for expressing my feelings on this list, so be it. Never done this before, until now. Feel better getting this off my chest. Thanks for listening. [JAWS-Users] Junk email settings in Outlook 2010, help finding the setting that let's you open links from within emails
Hello everyone. I had a strange thing happen Friday when I updated to JAWS 12. Since the update, I haven't been able to open links or view emails in my browser. I try to open them, and I get a message saying "This action has been canceled due to settings on this computer. Please see your administrator." Now, I haven't changed any settings, and though I have searched and searched, I cannot find the junk email settings, which is where I assume this setting would be? I am using JAWS 12, and Outlook 2010. I would be grateful for any assistance with this problem, as it is causing me problems with school. Re: [JAWS-Users] question about word doquments and .text files
I'm not sure about putting the file on a Victer Stream, but I can help you change the file extension. When your desired file is open, open the file menu. Choose "save as". This will open a new save dialogue box. The focus will automatically be in the file name edit box. Tab once, and you will be in a combo box allowing you to change file types. Use the arrow keys until you here "text Dot T X T". Press enter twice, and you will have created a file identical to the one you have open, but with a .txt extention. You can also do this by placing the focus on the name of your file within your documents folder, and renaming the file which is an option found again in your file menu. Just retype the name, replacing the .doc extension with .txt. Hope this was helpful. Hello. I am using Jaws 11, with windows 7. I have used the beta version of Office 2010, and have found most programs to work seemlessly, with one exception. Outlook 2010 had significant problems reading through lists of emails, as well as navigating the nav pane. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and Flash player
I'd like to thank you, Donald, for your detailed post. I am grateful for your explannations of these technical topics, I think when we can gain an understanding of the how's and why's that relate to the creation and use of websites and their content, it helps people understand that not everything is done as a conspiracy against accessibility, so to speak. You also did an excellent job providing a tool for action, explaining how one can have an influence on accessibility integration. Again, thank you sir. Most sincerely, Melissa -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Donald Marang Sent: Saturday, May 08, 2010 1:43 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and Flash player Currently, most buttons within a Flash Player can only be labeled by the Developer! YouTube, just after the announcement of Adobe's CS4 last year, which included more accessibility features in Flash Professional, added labels for standard buttons like play, pause and full screen. Sometime over the last year this seemed to go away. Probably a developer's oversight. JAWS can not label anything within the Flash movie object. As far as I have been able to determine, JAWS Scripts can not help label these buttons either. Adobe has just released, or about to release CS5, which now enhances the accessibility features and more importantly, make accessibility the default! This means that any developer creating a Flash Player object with the Adobe Flash Professional in Creative Suite 5 (CS5), will automatically have the standard 'widgets', recognized as buttons by JAWS will be labeled. Additional developer customized 'widgets' must have additional accessibility info filled out in the "accessibility" panel. Hopefully, this evolutionary enhancements will get implemented by web developers. The website developers must add this information or at least upgrade to the latest tools to improve the accessibility of their site. Send emails to the webmaster / developer of these sites to encourage them to update to the latest tools and to use the accessibility features of these tools to improve their site. HTML does show promise since it has accessibility designed into the standard. There are still many details up in the air, such as which video codec to implement. These issues are around copyright and patents. The favorite is H264, which works great and implemented many places like YouTube, is currently only free for non commercial use and this free trial will end around 2014. Some organizations, like Mozilla will not implement H264 for this reason in Firefox. They are pushing an little known open source video codec. Microsoft supports HTML5 using H264. They are implementing these standards into Internet Explorer 9. There are some very early betas of IE9 available, but I doubt they would work well with any screen readers. Apple, of course, has started a war with Adobe over Flash. Steve has personally bashed Flash and swears never to allow it on iPhones, iPods or iPads! He is pushing HTML5, even though it is not ready yet. That will certainly speed up implementation. You have my genuine respect for giving it a go sir. I'll be as much help as I can, I am a single mom and full time student going through finals, so please be patient with any time lapses that may occurr. It isn't because I don't want to help. Now, What operating system are you using? I ask because that will tell me where to direct you to find your default programs setting. In XP, I believe it is in the All Programs menu, or it is in the control pannel. I have not used XP for several years, so don't remember where things are exactly. Do a little exploring, and see if you can find it. As far as the ribbons are concerned, they are frustrating for everyone who comes to them from the classic menu style, sighted or not. They are merely icons in a string, so many sighted people are frustrated by them grately. We are at somewhat of an advantage, because at least JAWS tells us what we're looking at, it's not just some abstract picture of say, a pair of binoculars for zooming. They are completely usable though, and many of the old hotkeys are still functional, so finding a list of hotkeys may be of use. Frankly, I prefer to have access to the word pad files without interference from word 2007 because it is so much easier for me until I get a better grasp of the 2007 commands; I have not used word for more than ten years and am very rusty. You mention 'default' possibilities; that would be fine by me if I can direct 2007 not to be the default for some time while I am engaged in the learning curve. Melissa, I am eighty years of age, and getting up to speed with 2007 may be a while. It has been my experience that settings often can be fixed to make programs more compatible with Jaws and wonder about any such possibility with 2007. I also mentioned a possibility of finding a tutorial which might help me understand the 'ribbon' and other features. I do have the Reference on 2007 from the Printing House but could appreciate a little more verbiage in its approach. Sorry to have so much to say and ask. Have you tried re-installing or repairing this? What other programs did it come with? I'm assuming Power POint, Xcel, and perhaps Outlook? Also, what O.S. are you running it on. Re: [JAWS-Users] pdf to word
I have and do use several programs to accomplish this on a regular basis. First, Open Book will do this; Simply use the Freedom Impport Printer which sends the document to Open Book. I generally use the Exact View, which preserves layout and imagery. Then you can use the Launchables menu to export the file to word. The latest version of Adobe adds export functionality as well, whenever I am in a Word file, in the file menu, there is an option to Export file to...offering both .docx and TXT file types. Finally, I have used Nuance OmniPage. It is expensive, and the interface isn't accessible, but the functions it inserts into the context and file menus allow you to convert any file type to almost any other file type, again preserving imagery and layout. I hope at least one of these options helps you. Re: [JAWS-Users] Outlook 2007 sluggishness
While I cannot say I have found a solution to these problems, I can say I've experienced every one of them. I have tried making sure my old data is routinely cleaned, emptying my temp files folder, and all other things I can think of. Nothing seems to help. I've used both off-line as well as in- brouser methods for viewing emails, as it is necesary sometimes, and that seems to have no bearing on whether the program will respond with speed or sluggishness. The paid version allows more options than the free one, but the switch program is accessible. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Melissa Riley Sent: Wednesday, April 21, 2010 3:20 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and cd/dvd burning software I am grateful sir, for your advice.
