Hi All,

I am trying to use CCleaner's Drive Wiper tool & keep getting the
following
message at around 50% when using the Advanced or Complex Overwrite
options:

***
CCleaner
The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a
portion of the file.
OK
***

Jaws does not tell me which process is locking out the Drive Wiper
process.

Is CCleaner supposed to show me which process is locking
out the Drive Wiper process & Jaws just is not able to see it? I have
tried

with both my Anti Virus disabled & enabled with the same
results. I'm running XP Pro Jaws 13, & CCleaner 4.16. Has anyone ran
across

this & knows what process might be causing the locking out of the Drive
Wiper process? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very
much.

Take care.
Mike

The probelm with AVG and Avast is that there are questions about their
accessibility with JAWS, particularly the most recent versions. So as an
alternative to MSE, I am considering Qihoo 360 Internet Security, which is
free and JAWS accessible , according to a few list members who have tried
it. And it has received mostly favorable reviews for ease of use and
malware detection. Can I disable MSE real-time protection and keep it on
my PC and use it only as a scanner in conjunction with another real-time
anti-virus program like 360 Internet Security? This way, I can go back to
using MSE by re-enabling real-time protection in the event that the
alternate anti-virus program doesn't work out and has to be uninstalled.
My understanding is that the XP version of MSE can no longer be installed,
so once I remove it, I probably wouldn't be able to re-install it again,
and for this reason, I would prefer to keep it on my PC as a fallback. As
long as MSE real-time protection is disabled, it should not conflict with
another real-time anti-virus program. Does this make sense? Thanks for
any advice.

A few days ago, I posted that the Microsoft Security Essentials icon in
the System Tray of my XP PC was reporting its status as "potentially
unprotected". This morning, after I booted up and checked the System
Tray, the MSE icon is now reporting my PC status as "At Risk". Here is
the message that is displayed on the MSE Home tab:

PC status: At risk
Support for this operating system has ended, which means Microsoft
Security Essentials is no longer supported and your PC is at risk. To
make

sure your PC stays
protected, click the link below to see our end-of-support guidance for
operating systems.

While it is true that support for XP itself has ended, the XP version of
MSE continues to function. I successfully updated the database
definitions manually and ran a quick scan to verify this. So if MSE is
still working, then my PC is not really "At Risk", as the System Tray
icon reports, and I can only conclude that this is nothing less than
shameless scare mongering on the part of MS. Contrary to the message
above, reliable sources claim that support for MSE will continue through
July, 2015. So what is really going on? Are any other MSE users who
are still running XP also getting the "At Risk" icon in their System
Tray?

It is being flagged as potentially unprotected because you are running XP.
It is one way Microsoft is using to sarn/nudge/cajole/scare people into
upgrading to a more current operating system, since as of Tuesday they

If what you are saying is true, and it might well be, then it is
absolutely unconscionable of MS to use MSE as a vehicle to scare XP users
into upgrading to Windows 8 by deluding them into believing that their
computers are "potentially unprotected", when in fact, MSE will continue
to function just fine, at least until July, 2015.

RJ,

Here are some notes I've saved, maybe they will help?

After activating the show results Button, you need to activate the
JAWS cursor and route the active cursor to the position of the PC
cursor. JAWS cursor will now be directed to exit button, Press either
Page up or control Home to move the JAWS cursor at the top portion of
the Malware bytes window.
Down arrow to the malicious items found, it shall sound like graphic
256 graphic 702 PUP.Riskware blab la bla, perform single left mouse
click by tapping NumPad (Slash). It will move the focus of the PC
cursor to the Maliscious items, you may now activate the PC cursor.
Press down arrow/up arroe to navigate with in the list and spacebar to
check/uncheck items. But unfortunately, for some reason, jaws will not
echo, the check/uncheck states of the item, visually all malicious
items found is uncheck by default, so pressing spacebar once will
hopefully check the item in focus. Check all items you would like to
remove and tab to the remove selected items button once finish.

Hi,
Go to the sub menu of the program (Jaws submenu, for example).
Press shift + F10.
Go to properties and press enter.

Tab to the quick command edit box.
Type control + J, for jaws for example.

The alt will automatically add it self.

Tab down to apply, then shift tab to ok.
And that's it.

HTH,
Jorge

Can anyone advise me the best way to go about using c leaner with

I have just downloaded c cleaner and am not really sure about what I am

My main issue is that when I look at my start up list under msconfig I
have a lot of duplicate stuff there which I was hoping c cleaner would
get rid of but up til now it is all staying there.

For example I have Itunes helper which keeps being added if I uncheck it
and all the adoby programs will do the same and I have various others.

Appreciate any help how I can stop these from showing, I would much
prefer a list of about ten items as opposed to about twenty.

Appreciate any advice.

Using Google Maps to get driving directions between two points is actually
very easy and works very well with JAWS. First, bring up the Google home
page, scroll to the Maps link and click on it. On the Maps page, locate
the link labeled "Get Directions", which you can find either by using the
JAWS find command for the word "directions" or by bringing up the links
list with Insert-F7. On the Directions page, enter your starting and
ending addresses in the appropriate edit fields. You can enter a street
address along with either the city and state or just the zip code. If you
don't know the actual street number, you can enter the name of an
intersection like"Broadway and 42nd St., New York, NY". On the results
page, you can slect directions by car, by public transportation or by
walking. If you want driving directions, click on the appropriate link,
and you will get complete, step-by-step driving directions between the
starting and ending addresses you specified, which you can print out, if
you want. For most cities, you can also get directions by bus, subway or
commuter rail, i.e., public transportation, with estimated travel times
and scheduled departure times, which is very useful for us blind
travelers. HTH.

Absolutely not true. Just click on the maps option on the Google home
page
and then click on the Get Directions link. Enter your starting and
ending

addresses, and Google will give you driving directions between those two
points as well as directions by public transportation and by walking. I
use

this feature all the time to get directions by public transportation and
walking here in New York City. I just tried it myself using IE 8 with
JAWS

9 and XP, and it still works as it always has. If Google had decided to
discontinue this feature, there would have been a lot of publicity, just
as

there was when Google discontinued Google Reader.

Absolutely not true. Just click on the maps option on the Google home
page

and then click on the Get Directions link. Enter your starting and ending
addresses, and Google will give you driving directions between those two
points as well as directions by public transportation and by walking. I
use

this feature all the time to get directions by public transportation and
walking here in New York City. I just tried it myself using IE 8 with
JAWS

9 and XP, and it still works as it always has. If Google had decided to
discontinue this feature, there would have been a lot of publicity, just
as

there was when Google discontinued Google Reader.

Does anyone have a Jaws friendly site for getting driving directions?

For

Hi Kevin,

Try this:
1. Press the windows key to open your search field.
2. Type in updates.
3. Arrow the list to, View Installed Updates, & press enter.
4. Wait a little while for the list to populate. When the list is
populated
/ showing, press the letter, W, until you land on, Windows Internet
Explorer

10.
5. With Windows Internet Explorer 10 highlighted / selected, press the
applications / context menu key or shift + F10. Press enter on,
uninstall.
Follow the prompts. If you had IE9 previously installed, uninstalling
IE10

will automatically take you back to IE9. I haven't done this in quite
awhile so, after pressing enter on the uninstall option I'm not sure
exactly

what prompts will come up.
I hope these steps are easier to follow.

Take care.

Hi Kevin,

Try 1 of the following 2 options to uninstall Internet Explorer
The following instructions apply to both Windows 7 and Windows Vista.

1. Click the Start button , type Programs and Features in the search box
2. Click View installed updates in the left pane.
3. Under Uninstall an update, scroll down to the Microsoft Windows
section.
4. Right-click Windows Internet Explorer 10, click Uninstall, and then,
when

prompted, click Yes.
5. Click one of the following:
. Restart now (to finish the process of uninstalling Internet Explorer 10,
and restore the previous version of Internet Explorer).
. Restart later (to wait until you shut down or restart your computer).

Note: After you uninstall Internet Explorer 10, the previously installed
version of Internet Explorer will be available on your computer. It is not
necessary to reinstall.

Option 2
To uninstall IE10:

1. go to control panel, then programs, and click the area that says show
updates.
2. IE10 will then show up in the list of programs.
3. When uninstalling the IE10 you will be asked if you want to go back to
IE9.

When I try to open a file in MS Word, Excell and Word Pad, I key in the
commands, find the file, and enter on it.

At that point JAWS stops speaking, and the computer hangs up.

This does not happen when we turn Jaws off.

I can open the files from File Explorer.

This configuration was working fine until Wednesday this week, and then
the

problem started.

I am using JAWS 14, Windows 7, and Office 2007.

Here is what I have done.

I uninstalled JAWS 14, and reinstalled it by download from the Freedom
Scientific website.

I have uninstalled a trial version of Norton, to make sure I am running
only

one antivirus program -- Microsoft Security Essentials.

I have run msconfig and disabled everything on start up, except for my
Drop

Box.

Any ideas on what might be causing this?

Hi Tom,

Let's find out what OS you're running! Try the following:
1. Press, WindowsKey + Pause, to open system properties.
2. Route the Jaws cursor to the PC cursor, Insert + Numpad minus / Jaws
cursor key.
3. Press your page-up key to take the cursor to the top of the page.
4. Arrow down 1 line at a time. Jaws will report XP or Windows7 but, if
it's Windows7 keep arrowing down to find out if it's 32 or 64 bit. If it's
a 32 bit system you might hear something like X86.

Another way to find out:
1. Press your Windows Key to open the start menu.
2. Go to Programs or All Programs & press enter.
3. Press enter on Accessories & arrow down to system tools & press enter.
4. Arrow down to System Information, press enter, tab 1 time, & you should
hear what OS you are running. You can also arrow down this list to find out
more information about your computer.

Have you checked the Properties page of the JAWS 14 desktop icon to make
sure that the hot key assigned to JAWS 14 is still active? Occasionally,
for some unknown reason, the hot key assigned to JAWS will mysteriously
reset to none. You can also check the status of your JAWS hot key by
downloading a little utility called Hot Key Detective, which is available

the JAWS Users programs page and will display a list of all hot keys on
your

press Windows key-R and type "jaws14" into the run dialog and hit Enter.

frustrated with a problem that I have had for quite some time now. I
have

a
hot key assigned to JAWS. Every time I have to turn JAWS off by using
JAWS
Key plus F4, my hot key will not start JAWS again. I have tried changing
the hot key combo several times, but nothing seems to work. The only way
I
can get JAWS to work again is to restart my computer. I have even tried
reverting back to JAWS 13 and JAWS 12, and I still get the same results.
Can someone please tell me what my problem might be?

Thanks,
Donnie

I'm running Jaws 11 on Windows XP, and haven't had a problem with it,
until now. I had to disconnect my power supply this evening and when it
was reconnected it wanted to be authorized. I followed the steps (tried
every method more then once) and get a message about not having a licence.
To put it mildly this is idiotic, I have a licence and key, it was running
six hours ago as it had been for over a year. Anyone know what I can do?
All the information Jaws is looking for Must already be on my hard drive!
Because waiting until Monday to deal with Freedom Scientific is not a
happy thought, ... having to restart the machine every forty minutes
complicates life no end. Not to mention my power supply issue has not
been resolved yet and every restart is a breath holding event.

Thanks for any advice,
Sincerely,
Joy

The keys control + alt + delete only brings up
the lock screen and change logged in user.
You want to look in the task tray and see if nero
is running and see if you can close it. Then go
to programs and features or add/remove and see if
there is any nero listed there. Try to remove it
there before deleting it from the program files.
Deleting from that folder will cause you problems
if not done from add/remove or programs and
features. The reason it won't let you delete it is because it is still
running.

I know that the "S" in the HTTP prefix stands for a secure web page. But
can anyone explain why the Google.com home page that loads with IE 8 has
the "S" in the prefix while the one that loads with Firefox 17 does not?

Here is something interesting I just discovered. I checked the address

as it used to be. This leads me to believe that Google has indeed made
changes to it Search Settings page for IE 8 that have rendered it
inaccessible. I have had cookies enabled all along, so my inability to
change my preferences on the Search Settings page is probably not an
issue with cookies. And comparing the Search Settings page that comes
up with IE 8 versus the one that comes up with Firefox 17, I noticed
that the IE 8 version has a heading labled "Google Instant Predictions",
whereas the Firefox version has no such heading. Plus theGoogle home
page that is loaded with IE 8 is completely different than the one that
is loaded with Firefox. So contrary to what others have been
experiencing, for me Google appears to be browser specific, loading
different versions of its home page depending on which browser accesses
it. I suspect that Google has deliberately disabled the Search Settings
page that loads with IE 8 to encourage, or rather, force users to switch
to Chrome or Firefox or IE 9 or 10, which of course, requires upgrading

Hi Flor,

I won't play semantics with you.

The fact is, you said that Google says you should install Chrome for
the best results. Well, that's been the case with every software
developer in the known world.

Mozilla says you should install their browser because it's open source
and not as restrictive as other browsers.

Apple says you should install Safari for a wonderful browsing
experience.

Before these, you had the turf war between Internet Explorer and
Netscape Navigator.

Regardless of what internet turf war your referring to, the fact is the
same, the webpage does not change.

I've never experienced that which you describe with Google telling me I
should install Chrome, nor have they ever suggested that it would be a
far better experience.

I have never used any other Google page but the one I use now,
http://www.google.com/ and I have always signed in to have my
preferences loaded.

In any case, I still maintain that this is a computer specific problem,
and has nothing to do with Google, or the Internet.

I have a multitude of friends running Windows XP, Internet Explorer 8,
and lower versions of Jaws, and they manage just fine, including
myself, as I believe I mentioned in my previous message that I was
using Jaws on all three systems running all three platforms. I have
also pasted the message you wrote where I inferred my original
statement, lest there be any confusion.

I should also mention that there are many blind people who use Chrome
instead of Internet Explorer or any other browser just fine and without
any problem.

Google want you to download & install their own browser, Chrome.
Firefox

If you didn't check them to be installed, they weren't. The best way to stop
these from that list to appear is to go to Microsoft download page and
search for the downloads. Click the right mouse button and choose hide so
they won't show up again. Later you can show them on the same site by
choosing show hidden update if you change your mind.

Those files in the restore hidden updates list have not actually been
downloaded. They just represent downloads which were recommended, but were
not accepted. There is a check box which allows you to hide that list so
it doesn't keep reminding you and annoying you.

The latest build is not showing up when I check for updates or when I
restart my computer. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hello, everyone!

I am a JAWS 14 user. I wonder why, when I use JAWS with Firefox, it
doesn't read anything when I press the arrow keys and does not respond to
quick-navigation keys, including JAWS key + F7. Only to the Tab and
Shift+Tab keys does it respond. This problem does not occur when I use
other browsers. Could you kindly tell me why this is happening and what I
should do to get JAWS to work properly? Any help would be sincerely
appreciated.

Thank you!

Kind regards,

Aveline

to delete it, I no longer needed it, it wouldn't delete, as I have
done with other created folders, and is stuck on my task bar, and
keeps me from opening wlm now. can someone tell me how to remove it
from my task bar? I've gone to it, and tried to open it, and to simply
close it from the application key menu, with no luck

Re: [JAWS-Users] How do i make sure that i have the critical updates for windows from July?

Go to the window update site and check for updates.
Let it do its thing and than make sure you check what updates you want and
hit the install button.

In XP just hit the window key and arrow to window updates.
Win7. hit the window key and type in updates and arrow to window updates.

Is this a complete listing of all the changes in the various Jaws

If it asked you to purchase the program in order to remove the
registry entries, then it wasn't C-Cleaner.

The actual program is completely free to use, unless you purchase the
Pro version, which I can't speak to, so don't ask me to list the
difference between the two.

Anyway, tab to the registry button and press the spacebar.

Once you do this, tab to the list of checkboxes that outlines what
C-Cleaners scanners should check the registry for.

Check and uncheck the boxes according to your wishes.

Once you have finished all the checkboxes, tab twice to the Scan for
issues button and press the spacebar to activate.

Wait until your screen reader reports that you are back on the scan
for issues button, at which point, you can shift+tab to go to the
results pane to view what it has found.

Once you have reviewed what it's found, or if you simply want to
bypass the results, tab to the fix selected issues button and press
the spacebar.

You'll be placed in a dialog box that asks you if you want to back up
your registry. You can select to do this or not, it's up to you.

Once you've made the selection to back-up your registry or not, you'll
be placed in another dialog box where you can select the issues you
want to repair.

If you feel there's something that should not be repaired, then
shift+tab to the issues list and uncheck the box. I always just tab to
the fix all selected issues button and press the spacebar. Once done,
you'll be placed on the close button, so press your spacebar to
activate it.

Now here you have to watch out because for some reason, Jaws sometimes
loses focus on the cleaner, so you have to alt+tab to go back to it,
or, if the cleaner is the only window open, you'll have to go to your
desktop, then alt+tab back to the cleaner.

Depending on what point in the registry cleaning process you lost
focus on the cleaner, you may have to spacebar on the above close
button, or continue on below.

Not sure about you, but I always run multiple scans of the registry to
make sure I've taken care of all the problems issues, along with the
problem issues created when the original problems were fixed.

This is sort of like pruning a tree. If you don't prune the tree at
the largest branch and start at the bottom of the branch, you have to
keep pruning until the problem area is cut off.

This would be how C-Cleaner and most other registry cleaners work. It
starts at the bottom of the branch, and works it's way up. Now, I'm
not going to pretend to know how the registry works, or what it's
structure looks like, but it's enough to know that I run the cleaner
several times until the cleaner reports that no items found in the
results window.

In other words, rinse and repeat as needed.

Hope this helps.
