[JAWS-Users] Winamp

2018-01-21 Thread Michael
Hi. I recently acquired a used Toshiba laptop pc and upgraded it to Windows
10 home edition. I have Winamp installed on the pc, but every time I try to
play a file in Winamp, Groove Music wants to open the file. I have tried to
jog my memory so I can make Winamp the default player. I open preferences
with ctrl-p after launching Winamp, but for the life of me, I can't remember
how to make Winamp the default player despite the fact that I hear file
types open under the general preferences. I was so sure I would remember
how to make Winamp the default media player. Thank you.

Maybe this territory has already been covered. But, have you tried a
complete uninstall and re-install? Have you tried opening with another
screen-reader? If you can re-crute some working eyes, I'd be curious if
Winamp takes as long to load without any screen-reader running?

Just some thoughts.

Were those options there before? When you first set up the programme it
generally asks you if you want to set them. I don't remember the steps.
Maybe you should re-install the programme. Do you have the latest (final?)
winamp build? It's winamp 5.666 I believe. It's the most stable with Windows
10.

Can you try opening Winamp from the context menu and see if that goes any
better? Once the programme is open you can use the playlist editor and so on

2017-07-25 Thread JM Casey
How are you opening winamp? Do you use the shell options? Do you search for
the programme in the search box, or use the run command?
I find winamp is generally slower on Windowws 10 than it was on Windows XP.
It also takes Windows a lot longer to power up my external USB drive, but
tha'ts not a winamp issue ... just that a lot of my music is on there, and
Windows shuts off the drive pretty much as soon as it's not in use. This
results sometimes in Winamp appearing to lag. .

I have seen this behavior in the past, but went away once I restarted my

Hey Tom.
Still love using Winamp for music on my Windows 10 machine. Modern skins have
never been supported by screen readers as far as I know. Switching to classic
is always the first thing I do when installing. Glad you got everything
working. Unfortunately I never use the library feature at all, so I haven't
experienced the annoyance you described with the spacebar and don't have a
solution. I'm surprised the JAWS bypass key helps though as I was pretty sure
the play/pause from the keyboard is a Winamp keystroke.

Well, I have egg on my face. After a couple of reinstallations and my discovery

unchecked visualization and the detector plug-in. I was already using the
classic skin. I couldn’t find anything about modern skin support in the latest
Winamp version. However, the program runs much more smoothly. Thanks so much
for everyone’s help. I am left with one petty annoyance. As you know, the
spacebar has the play/pause function. I would expect this while in the main
window. However, it also occurs in the library window. The work-around is to
press the JAWS bypass key before pressing the spacebar. As I said, it is only a
little nuisance. But it would be nice not to need this work-around. Thanks

Well, I have egg on my face now. I did find the JAWS help file, and it was
quite useful. After two reinstallations, I finally got things right. I did
uncheck the detector plug-in and Visualization during the installation. I
was using the classic skin anyway. I figured out that every time I press
Insert+3, the bypass key before pressing the spacebar, it will behave
normally. The only petty annoyance I have now is that I cannot review the
contents of the search box with the arrow keys. At least, I can review them
with Control+Up Arrow.

clearer about my issues. Though I have more than one, I'll stick with one
for now. I have not tried the playlist editor. The keys in the main window
seem to work as I expect. However, when I'm in the library window, things
don't work so well. Let's say I am in the search box looking for songs,
artists, or albums. For example, I try to search for mamas and papasin the
library window. When I press the spacebar, the last song I played will start
playing. This should only happen in the main window. I must go to the main
window to stop it. When I am returned to the search box, I cannot reliably
type in it, nor can I read the text with the arrow keys. I can only read
characters when I am deleting them with the backspace key. I can read the
entire line with Control+Insert+Up Arrow. Thus, I can't search for anything.
If I try to keep typing, my keystrokes are not passed to the search box, but
rather, they are processed as if intended for the main window. . If I press
the spacebar again, my song will start playhing again. Winamp seems to
process some keystrokes as if I am in the main window when I am actually in
the library window. I am wondering if I need to change some Winamp settings.
I guess I can try to reinstall, but I hate to do this because to get a clean
install, I will have to rebuild my library from scratch.

I'm getting confused...

What exactly are you trying to do?

Are you trying to play a song from your library using the library pane of
Winamp?

If this is the case, then you should use the enter key, not the spacebar.

It's similar to iTunes.

You can arrow up and down the library, but until you press enter on the
selection, the track won't play, though when you press the spacebar, it will
keep playing the previous track you had loaded in Winamp.

I'm also interested in why you are using the Winamp Library?

I find it very difficult to use, though I don't know if scripts have been
created for the Winamp Library feature. Having said that though, I simply
use File Explorer to manage my audio tracks.

Since I have no sight, I don't bother with cover art, or anything like that,
I simply manage the audio tracks as files.

Regardless, Winamp won't stop working, simply because it's not being
developed, there simply won't be any support or updates, so you'll have to
get your support or help from online sources, or lists like these.

Perhaps you could explain in finer detail what it is you're trying to
accomplish, and how you're going about trying to achieve this.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Winamp

2017-06-28 Thread Judy Jones
I'm not sure if this will solve the issue, if the issue is a play list, but I
have Winamp set to start up in the main window. I have my audio files
categorized in folders. If I want to listen to a playlist, say, Oldies, once I
open up the main window, press shift-L to see a list of folders, navigate to
the one you want and press enter. The S key will toggle shuffle on or off.
The R key will toggle repeat. It's a snap pulling up play lists this way
without really even having to create them.

If you are just wanting to play songs manually, simply navigate to the folder
where you have the audio files you want to play, and play them from there,
rather then trying to navigate the library. Another work-around is to make a
special folder for categories of audio files you want to mix. For instance, I
have a file called Work Music that has a few genres in it that I like to listen
to when working.

Yes. I assume you mean Winamp help. So, you are saying, for example, that
when you are in the library window that pressing the spacebar does not start
music playing.

Winamp is still a disaster. Every time I press the spacebar the song I last
played starts playing. I would expect this behavior in the main Windows, but
not in the library window. Also, as I said in an earlier post, Alt 1 through
Alt 0 will read the column headers in Window-Eyes. I believe Alt+3 opens the
Data editor. I’ll be using Window-Eyes until it breaks or until you JAWS
users can come up with some better solutions. I know, I know, Winamp is
supposed to be broken soon, too.

Successfully using Winamp on Windows 10 with JAWS 18 here. Thought I would have
some issues at first but it still works like a charm, mostly, though I've had
to change the way I use it a bit, since Windows plays much nicer if you use its
context menus rather than working exclusively in the playlist editor as I used
to. Not sure about your spacebar issue. I know this is an old hat kin dof
answer, but the few times Winamp has started acting strange on me, a reinstall
has always fixed whatever issue I was having.

Re: [JAWS-Users] winamp cross fading scripts

Here's the best cross fading plug-in I've used for doing exactly what
you want Betty:

SqrSoft Advanced Crossfading 1.7
http://sqrsoft-advanced-crossfading.software.informer.com/1.7/

It is 100% accessible to JAWS too. Just install it and then enable it
in Winamp's Output plug-ins listbox in Options.

Works very well I must say.

Good luck.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Winamp May Not Go ByeBye After All

2013-12-21 Thread Mike B.
Hi All,

Below is the article as best as I could copy it:

AOL is finalizing negotiations to sell off Winamp and Shoutcast in a deal
that would allow both products to live on, according to a source with
knowledge
of the discussions.

The company (which owns TechCrunch)
announced last month
that as of December 20, Winamp web services would shut down and that the
desktop version of the video and music player would no longer be available
for
download.

Shortly afterward, TechCrunch's Ingrid Lunden reported that
Microsoft was in talks to buy both Winamp and Shoutcast,
another media streaming service that AOL owns through its acquisition of
Nullsoft way back in 1999.

My source did not identify the potential buyer, but they said the deal was
close enough that they're confident that an agreement will be reached.
Also,
they said they don't believe the previously announced shutdown would happen
on Dec. 20 - while these negotiations are progressing, I'm guessing it's in
the interest of both parties to keep the services up and running.

An AOL spokesperson declined to comment for this story.

As we noted in our previous coverage, the products haven't entirely
languished under AOL - for example,
Winamp Sync for Mac
launched two years ago - but it hasn't exactly seemed like a big priority.
Nonetheless, Winamp in particular has
a certain nostalgic appeal
for people of the right age (i.e., me) and someone (Microsoft?) thinks
there's still some value here.

Take care.

Honestly the first time and this is going back quite a while that I looked

point me in the right direction. It was a mystery, fortunately you have the
benefit of my traumatic experience to draw from. Control + P opens up
preferences. The letters X, C, and V are play pause and stop respectively.

Alt + F opens up another menu but there is nothing to tell you that other
than my word for it. Also just hitting the alt key by itself opens up a
useful menu.

You should be on your way for now. There are other key commands but you need
to get comfortable with what I have just given you first. Don't worry there

Hi,
I have a simple question:
If, you use WMP and ITunes for your music where is the value of Winamp,
If it's heading to the player cemetery?

Also, if you use ITunes, ITunes likes to control your music folder.

Hello rick,
Your absolutely right on the way you view it because Winamp was your first
taste of player.

Well, me on the other hand, I was introduce to the WMP and ITune was maybe
just getting started.
I'll will take a look at Winamp and downloaded.
And try to learn something new, since we're here to learn.
It's incredible how blind folks connect with their music and especially, if
you play an instrument like myself.

I read a little about it last night from the internet after Mike's post and
that's why my respond pertain to the value of Winamp , and not knowing of
it's under cover popularity.

Hi,
I have a simple question:
If, you use WMP and ITunes for your music where is the value of Winamp,
If it's heading to the player cemetery?

Also, if you use ITunes, ITunes likes to control your music folder.

Just because they are not going to be developing future versions of Winamp
does not mean you won't be able to use what you already have. It will still
function perfectly fine as a media player as it is a completely self

Hello rick,
Your absolutely right on the way you view it because Winamp was your first
taste of player.

Hello Trisch,

Thank you, for your WinAmp link, that was finally accessible, as
I had spent at least 5 hours prior to your email; trying to
utilise others links; as each and every time I was being told
that those sites were closed and No available access.

Once on site using your link, the free version of WinAmp 5.66 was
downloaded in less than 20 minutes. Sincere Thanks, and keep up
your Helpful inputs!

Hi,
I have a simple question:
If, you use WMP and ITunes for your music where is the value of Winamp,
If it's heading to the player cemetery?

Also, if you use ITunes, ITunes likes to control your music folder.

Goodness, what is this world coming to! Winamp is shutting down? I just
rocked it a couple of months ago, and I really dig the program. Hopefully,
it will still function well after it subsides. If it was not for winamp, I
would've never known I suffered hearing loss.
Oh well, there is still Itunes...
Thanks mike for the heads up...

Hi,

If, you use WMP and ITunes for your music where is the value of Winamp,
If it's heading to the player cemetery?

Also, if you use ITunes, ITunes likes to control your music folder.

[JAWS-Users] winamp and context menu

2013-10-24 Thread Kimsan
Hello:

Windows 8.1 jfw latest version and winamp 5.63.

I can't seem for the life of me get winamp to show up in the contextual
menue.

I've looked under default programs, set file associations, and there was
even an option somewhere in winamp to add winamp to the context menue, I
checked it, and it did not show up.

Thoughts?

Thank you.

[JAWS-Users] Winamp Not Playing Next file in a Selected List

2013-02-17 Thread Rick Justice
Dave,
Recently you posted about Winamp not playing the next file in a selected
list of files automatically.
It has been suggested that deleting the .ini file in the Winamp directory
will correct this problem.
I have encountered this problem before, but I didn't
understand why it happened with no apparent reason.
Well, here is the most likely cause, which is much simpler
Winamp has a command for this particular behavior,
and I discovered it while editing ID Tag information in Winamp.
Winamp shares a command keystroke with Windows, which is
Control + V
I verified this in the following versions, 2.8, 5.04 and 5.62.
Maybe because of screen echo settings with Jaws or otherwise, the user is not
hearing this command when it is activated.
I haven't looked for a way to disable this keystroke,so I don't even know at
this point if that is possible.
While in Winamp, if you look in the Playback sub-menu, you will find the
command listed.
Interesting what you can learn in the wee morning hours.
HTH,
Rick Justice

I'm still trying to figure out why play list editing works on my acer and

(last version) we both have quad core machines running windows 7 HP 64 bit
and we both have the same sound systems, the only difference is she has an
AMD processor and video card while I have Intel, and she is on a laptop
while I am on a desktop, *arg!*

but I open up a play list and arrow to a song I wish to move, hit alt and up
or down arrow and it moves on my machine, while I can open and/or make a new
play list on her machine, and do the same and the song sits where it
originally was and ignores all attempts to move it unless I open the file in

and so far I have not been able to get anyone's attention at Winamp either,

Normally I navigate to the directory name and select play in Winamp which

Re: [JAWS-Users] Winamp question

2013-02-01 Thread David Ferrin
This happened on 2 machines, both Windows 7, a 32 bit and a 64 bit. There
weren't any M3U files on the 64 bit system so I just dumped the INI file on
there and after running through the setup process which only takes a minute
it is working fine again as well. The 64 bit system is not the one I use
most often for playing music so it wasn't a priority. Now when the laptop
started having the same issue I decided to look in to the problem.

What also crossed my mind after a little while last evening was to simply
save out the INI file in a safe place. That way if it happens again I'll
simply slap it back into the directory and that would reset it to the
settings that I have in place now, by passing the setup process.

That way if it happens again I'll
simply slap it back into the directory and that would reset it to the
settings that I have in place now, by passing the setup process.

hmmm, check over your preferences David, if not something shifted in there,
then I would pull it and re-load.

I'm still trying to figure out why play list editing works on my acer and
does not on my wife's Samsung, same Winamp version (latest) and jaws 13
(last version) we both have quad core machines running windows 7 HP 64 bit
and we both have the same sound systems, the only difference is she has an
AMD processor and video card while I have Intel, and she is on a laptop
while I am on a desktop, *arg!*

but I open up a play list and arrow to a song I wish to move, hit alt and up
or down arrow and it moves on my machine, while I can open and/or make a new
play list on her machine, and do the same and the song sits where it
originally was and ignores all attempts to move it unless I open the file in
a text editor and change things around manually.

and so far I have not been able to get anyone's attention at Winamp either,
FI!

Before I get into I don't know how much work trying to find out how to fix

Normally I navigate to the directory name and select play in Winamp which

2012-03-05 Thread Rick Justice
Hi Victor,
In your tutorial you stated:
Unfortunately, Winamp likes to leave residual ghost images of files it's
played in the last instance
I don't know when you wrote the tutorial, but in earlier versions of WinAmp,
the last files played were saved in an m3u.
I don't have a later version installed, so I can't really comment on
the existence of a m3u in the WinAmp folder in program files.
Also, In Winamp 2.8, the Control + S keystroke doesn't seem to open a save
as dialogue.
Do you happen to know when this keystroke came into play?

Hi Brad,

Here is a tutorial I wrote some time ago on how to create, manage and play
Winamp playlists.

This should answer most of your questions, however, this is quite an old
tutorial, and some keystrokes have been discovered that make creating
playlists much easier than the methods outlined in the below tutorial.

For example, if you would like to play all the files within a specific
folder, simply highlight the folder, then press your applications key, or
shift+F10 if you are without such a key, and press P for play in Winamp.
Depending on what else you have that starts with the letter P within that
context menu, you'll either have to press enter on that option, or the
command will activate right away. You'll have to decide which is the case
for your particular situation or computer configuration.

Also, you can do the same with specific songs within the same folder by
going into a particular folder, pressing the end key to go to the bottom of
the file list, and pressing control+up arrow selecting the tracks you wish
to include in the playlist with control+spacebar. Once you've selected all
the tracks you wish to play, press the applications menu or shift+F10 and
press P for play in Winamp and the songs will automatically be placed in a
Winamp playlist which you can then save for later access.

Also, should you wish to add more songs to the above playlist, go into the
second folder, or third or fourth, depending on how many times you wish to
go into and out of folders, follow the same steps as above for selecting
tracks to include, then once all the songs are selected, press the
applications menu or shift+F10 and arrow down to add to Winamp, and the
tracks you selected will be placed at the bottom of the playlist you created
from the previous folder. You can do this for as many songs or tracks you'd
like in however many folders you wish to include.

Once you've added all the songs, just save the playlist like the
instructions below.

There are other shortcut steps I've discovered, but those will come at a
later time when I've updated the tutorial.

In the meantime, hope the below tutorial helps in some way.

***Begin Tutorial***

Believe it or not, it's easier to create a playlist with Winamp, than it
sounds.

First, go to your desktop, or where ever you keep the Winamp shortcut, and
enter on it.

Once the Winamp window opens, control+tab twice to get to the playlist
editor.

If you find that you've used the control+tab keystroke twice, and Jaws
didn't say playlist editor, then that means you have the playlist editor
closed.

You can open it in one of two ways.

You can press the keystroke of alt+E, or you can press alt+F, then arrow
down to playlist editor and enter on it.

I think you'll find the alt+E keystroke is easier. Smile.

In any case, once Jaws reports that the playlist editor is opened,
control+tab up to the playlist editor.

Now, this is going to sound weird, but go with me on this.

Once you land in the playlist editor, press control+A to highlight
everything, then press delete.

Don't worry if Jaws doesn't say anything, what you've essentially done is
delete any tracks that were in there from the last time you used Winamp to
listen to something.

Unfortunately, Winamp likes to leave residual ghost images of files it's
played in the last instance, and so, in order to create a clean playlist,
you have to delete what was previously there.

So, now that you've done that, press the letter L for lists, and this will
open up an open dialog box.

Those of you familiar with downloading from send space, or saving as and the

When this dialog box opens, you'll land on the filename edit box. Do a

Now, depending on where you last took Winamp, you won't know where you'll be

When he does, do a say line command with insert+up arrow, and Jaws should
read out, Not Selected My Documents.

This means you're on your desktop, and you can now go to the folder where
the files are that you want to play.

Re: [JAWS-Users] winamp and playing more then one song

2012-03-05 Thread Scorpio Forever
Hi Rick,

I should have been more clear.

When I say residual ghost images of files played in the last instance, I
meant within the playlist editor, not specifically on your computer as an
M3U file.

If you play a track and close Winamp, then simply open up an instance of
Winamp without entering on a particular track on your hard drive, in other
words, by entering on the Winamp icon on your desktop or start menu, if you
press the spacebar, you'll find that it will start playing the same track
you played the last time you used Winamp to play a file.

I just checked, and while they've fixed this particular bug and the track
does not start playing if you press the spacebar, the track list still
appears in the playlist editor, so, as long as you haven't moved that file
from it's original location when you first played it within Winamp, entering
on that track from within the playlist editor will start playing that song.
That also means that if you add any tracks to Winamp, they will be added
below that first title, and, if you're listing to a particular raunchy audio
book just prior to creating a kids party playlist, there's going to be a bit
of embarrassment when you first turn on the playlist. LOL.

Suffice it to say, I didn't mean that it would actually save a file on your
hard drive, though, I guess, in order for Winamp to do what I mentioned
above, I guess it would have to store a file on your hard drive, though I've
never actually investigated whether Winamp does this within the temporary
memory, or permanently on your hard drive, but as I've found this to be the
case, even after re-booting my computer, I would say that it's a good guess
that the file gets saved on your hard drive.

As for the control+S keystroke, it's been in effect since version 4.5 and
onwards, though I can't say for sure that it's been around longer than that.

I have listed below the compendium of Winamp keystrokes for Jaws just in
case there are any discrepancies, with the below keystrokes being taken
directly from the Jaws application help file.

Unfortunately, Jaws help does not offer keystrokes for the Winamp Library or
the Winamp Video windows, but if and when I find such beasts, I'll be sure
to update and post the new information.

In the meantime, here are the keystrokes currently available for each of the

Hi Brad. I am using a fairly old version of Winamp but here is how I make
playlists.
If I want to play more than one track at a time, I open Winamp then press
letter L then shif-tab in to the folder where my songs are located. Select
the ones you want then press Enter and they should start playing.
If you want to create a playlist, you might press Alt+E then control+tab to
open the playlist editor.
Press letter L to add tracks to the playlist. Add as many tracks as you like
even if they reside in different folders. You can move from folder to folder
using either shift+L or just backspacing to the various folders. You can
then save the playlist with control+S.
Note: you can obtain a list of winamp keystrokes specifically for the
playlist editor by pressing insert+W while in the playlist editor.

Hope this helps.

Hi Brad. If you copy the files in your playlist to Victor Stream there will
be no problem. However, if you move the files from your computer to your
Stream, they will no longer be in your computer and the Playlist file will
not work because it won't be able to locate the files you've asked it to

Re: [JAWS-Users] winamp and playing more then one song

2012-03-04 Thread Scorpio Forever

Those of you familiar with downloading from send space, or saving as and the
like, will be familiar with this dialog box.

When this dialog box opens, you'll land on the filename edit box. Do a
shift+tab to go to the file list window just above the filename edit box.

Now, depending on where you last took Winamp, you won't know where you'll be
in the file list, so a good rule of thumb is to press the backspace key
seven or eight times until Jaws stops talking.

When he does, do a say line command with insert+up arrow, and Jaws should
read out, Not Selected My Documents.

This means you're on your desktop, and you can now go to the folder where
the files are that you want to play.

So, if the files are in a folder three levels deep into your my documents
folder, let's call it Thea's audio files, you would press the spacebar to
select My Documents, press the enter key to go into that folder, then arrow
or find the folder titled Thea's Personal Files, highlight it, then press
enter.

Once in that folder, find the next folder, called Thea in Hawaii, enter on
it, and finally go to Thea's audio files, and press enter.

Be careful here, you don't want to make a common mistake that everyone
makes, even me before I realized it, smile, do not touch any of the arrow
keys, or the spacebar key, or anything on your keyboard until you've done a
select all with control+A, and I'll explain later.

Once you've done the control+A, tab to the open button in the

Hello Ming,

Please make sure that you are in the right Winamp pane when you're adjusting
the volume.

The volume up and down keys only work in the Winamp main window.

Try control+tab to go around the Winamp panes until you get to the Winamp
main window.

The easiest way to figure out which is the Winamp main window if Jaws isn't
telling you is to try to turn up the volume or turn it down after each press
of control+tab.

Once you hear that the volume has changed, you know you're in the Winamp
main window.

[JAWS-Users] Winamp is giving me the silent treatment...

Hi listers,
I'm having a problem with Winamp, I can't find the version, as usual
menus have been removed, or hidden. It seems like it's been updated
without my agreement. The main problem is out of the blue, it stopped
outputting audio, as if it is in mute mode, or something similar. I
was just browsing through a folder listening to a few mp3's, and it
just stopped playing the audio, though, it is playing the track, but
no audio is produced.

Jaws reads the track times, so I know it's playing, and I played the
same tracks in Windows Media Player, with no problem. I wasn't even in
winamp when this problem happened, I was in a folder, and winamp was
minamized, so I don't know how I changed any settings.

I'm running JFW 8, and Xp, and I generally avoid app updates, as my
old version of Jaws makes more things less accessible.

Please let me know how to 'unmute', or undo what I did, or what the PC
