Re: [JAWS-Users] Braille Display and Keyboard Solutions

2016-02-16 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Amy,

If gets a bit complicated jaws has the keyboard manager where you can change
what scripts are associated with each keystroke .
You can adjust what information is presented for each control type in
structured Braille.
Where to start depends on your current familiarity with JAWS.

Jaws also has an touch mode which more closely resembles voiceover.
Let me know how much this makes sense and then I can give you additional
pointers

Yes, you can customize the braille display commands. I haven't tried it, as
I am not currently a heavy JAWS user. However, there is a series of JAWS
help topics describing the very extensive braille support provided,
including means of customizing commands.

Freedom Scientific is a braille display vendor. Screen readers written by
braille display vendors tend to have much better braille support than the
alternatives.

Braille Pen is nowhere near as good when using with jaws.
The connectivity is Bluetooth only as well.

It doesn't feel anywhere near as well put together as the focus.

The Focus14 Blue will be able to use Power123, due out any day now, which
Jonathan Mosen spoke about in the latest (May 2014) FSCast. it will thus be
enabled to operate on the computer and iPhone at the same time, i.e.,
without having to be unplugged from the PC's USB port. (I think you press
the on/off button on the side on the display to toggle whether you want the
Bluetooth operation or the USB operation when you want to change between
devices.) It has Advance bars, router row of buttons, WhizWheels, panning
buttons, shift and selector buttons, and of course the six-dot or the
eight-dot Braille entry keyboard for use with both JAWS and iOS. . it works
seamlessly with both.

Hi Jaws people, Do any of you know of a really small Braille display
that is Jaws compatible and iPhone friendly and connects either by USB

Hopefully, this would be able to work with either or both my Windows 7

Thanks so much for any input or comments about your small display!

Some people have trouble plugging the USB cable into the Refreshabraille, but
there's a technique that helps much with this. I had a Braille Pen for a
while, but returned it because it just wasn't engineered well, it had a long
joystick and was just generally clunky. Not sure about the small Freedom
Scientific displays, but I like the APH Refreshabraille 18, it's ruggedly
constructed and has a very long battery life.

The only problem I've had is JAWS.
JAWS and the Refreshabraille simply do not get along.
However, if you're going to be using this with IOS devices, its great!
Oh, and as far as the usb thing, its a pain to connect it to the
refreshabraille, but with a little tinkering you can do it.
I just leave the cable attached wherever I go even though I usually
don't use it via USB.
Its better for keeping things together too anyway.

Bluetooth. it is just a little (an inch or two) wider than the iPhone
 5S.

Hi Jaws people, Do any of you know of a really small Braille display
that is Jaws compatible and iPhone friendly and connects either by USB
or Bluetooth? I am looking for just the display and not one that is
part of a device that has any of its own computability.

Hopefully, this would be able to work with either or both my Windows 7
computer using Jaws 15 as well as my iPhone 5.

Thanks so much for any input or comments about your small display!
 Vicky

Refreshabraille 18 by APH would be a good choice. You can connect via USB or
Bluetooth, and it's a dumb display. The keyboard is quiet and it has routing

You might want to also compare the Perkins Braille Mini. I did a comparison

There was one of them that people reported that it was very difficult to

Re: [JAWS-Users] Braille display?

2014-06-13 Thread Flor Lynch

The Focus14 Blue will be able to use Power123, due out any day now,
which Jonathan Mosen spoke about in the latest (May 2014) FSCast. it
will thus be enabled to operate on the computer and iPhone at the same
time, i.e., without having to be unplugged from the PC's USB port. (I
think you press the on/off button on the side on the display to toggle
whether you want the Bluetooth operation or the USB operation when you
want to change between devices.) It has Advance bars, router row of
buttons, WhizWheels, panning buttons, shift and selector buttons, and of
course the six-dot or the eight-dot Braille entry keyboard for use with
both JAWS and iOS. . it works seamlessly with both.

Personally, if I was in your position I'd stick with FS products,

You might want to also compare the Perkins Braille Mini. I did a comparison
of braille displays at work about a year ago, I'll see if I can find it.
There was one of them that people reported that it was very difficult to
plug the cable into it to charge it. Unfortunately, I can't remember which
one that was.

Hi Jaws people, Do any of you know of a really small Braille display
that is Jaws compatible and iPhone friendly and connects either by USB

Hopefully, this would be able to work with either or both my Windows 7

Thanks so much for any input or comments about your small display!

What might be cheaper is the displays from Telesoft in Japan.

Hi jerry,

This may be because every new line - a hard line break, when the enter
key is pressed - is treated as a paragraph break, thus making a new one
begin in cell two or cell three (to conform with the correct brailling
rules), in Notepad and in Perky Duck. If you have the full forty cells
filled in one line, then isn't it likely that there will be a single
space left in cell one of the next braille line to mark the word
separation, which might be important if you have the display refreshing
automatically? (I can't speak to perky duck, not having it.) the
paragraph setting in Outlook and word may be set to two line-spaces
rather than just one. if reading a print line in Notepad of more than
40 characters that wraps, I believe the remainder of the print line will
start over on cell one of the next braille (as it will happen, shorter)
line. the braille line beginning in cell two or three may be quite
correct for beginning a new paragraph in braille. I do have Duxbury
braille Translator, and I know that there are settings available there
to enable beginning a parargraph on cell one.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Braille display Issue in Notepad and Perky Duck

2010-09-19 Thread Flor Lynch

Hi,

I have a BrailleNote (32 cell). I did a test in Notepad writing text
with no press of the enter key over multiple line-breaks, and indeed the
new lines begin with an indent of 1 cell to cell two. This, after all,
may be the default behaviour in Notepad (at least). I wonder if we
turned off word wrap, and chose 'best fit', would that change anything.
Now, it's true that most lines will not have the full 40-cell braille
width; so for most purposes in most programs that won't matter much. I
do some braille proof-reading myself, for which i use duxbury; and there
the cells (including cell 1 when appropriate) are filled in with the
beginning of a new braille line. I'm quite surew there is a technical
explanation of why new lines on a braille display in Notepad and in
other programs begin in cell two; but does anyone here know it? It's
also quite true that Notepad is not an ideal means through which to read
a text file on a refreshable braille display.

Hi,
I think the margins are only for printing. Anyway, I just changed it
to 0
on my own computer, and I still find the first character in Notepad in
cell

# 2.
It was definitely a good thought and worth a try though.

What's her left margin set to? In Notepad, page Set-up, the default
left and right margins both are 20 millimeters. (This is the value in
Windows XP. I presume it's the same in vista.)

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Braille display Issue in Notepad and Perky Duck

I am working with a deaf-blind person who uses a Focus braille
display,

JFW
11, and Vista.

She's taking a braille transcription course, so alignment is
important.

She has discovered that in Perky Duck, and in Notepad, the cursor
always
starts in cell 2 instead of cell 1. (In Word or Outlook, the cursor
starts
as it should in cell 1.)

I have tried changing some settings in her braille options. Status
cells
are turned off. She's using a 40-cell display, and panning increment
is set
to 40.

Any thoughts on why this problem is occurring and how to fix it?

Thanks.

Are you running this natively or in a virtual machine using VMware
Fusion or something. Just curious as that may have a bearing on the problem.

Even more strange some times the start menu gets displayed on the braille

Any clue on how to fix this?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Braille display and Jaws 8

2007-10-15 Thread Joseph Lee
Hi there,
Did you go to Add braille display button from
this dialog? You should add it first before
you can use it. Syncing is not relatf to
this (unless if you want to use PAC Mate
Remote (should ask the PAC Mate list for more
info) to control your computer from your PAC
Mate).
Cheers,
Joseph

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Braille display and
Jaws 8

I have three computers running Jaws 8, one
desktop, and two laptops. I
decided to use my Pacmate display on one of
the laptops. I went in under
utilities and opened up the display window.
On the other two machines I've
done this with, there's a pick for the PM
display. On this particular
machine though, there's only one pick, and
it's for no display.

Now, I have never synced my pacmate with this
particular laptop. Do I need
to do that to get the drivers to appear, or
is there some other way to get
them.

Thanks.
