KR> Right on Brian
I'm still here... I'm in the middle of a move to Tulsa and I'm commuting on weekends, so it leaves little time for the KR. I will be there permanently in May and will get back to it. It's been about a 6-8 month delay... Your posts keep me going, though. And to keep this KR related, I decided a long time ago to keep in light and simple and made a lot of progress in a relatively short time. If you build per plans (with the new airfoil :-) you will be amazed at how fast it will go. Brian and I always talk about how much time we spend thinking about building a part compared to actually building it. As Brian puts it, the 2nd KR will go much faster, of course, I need to finish my orginal one first... :-) Bob - I'm looking forward to your progress reports. Build what's comfortable to you, it's your butt in the seat. Also, make sure the ribs and spine are formed as 'hat' supports. I assume you built a 'male' mold for the turtle deck vs. a female mold. One way to continue to add money is when you borrow someone's molds (ie, Mark L's cowl molds, wheel pant molds, etc), drop a paypal to Mark Jones for $20 or so. Since we're saving significantly more money than that by using the molds, it seems like a small price to pay and especially with a cowl mold, you're getting close to potentially benefiting from the prop bank anyway. KR> Update / New Pics
Netters, It's been a while since I posted any progress. I've been busy building. After the Gathering in September, I returned and got busy on the tail feathers. I have everything but the VS ready for finish sanding. Click here to see a pic http://www.geocities.com/djramccoop1/HS_19.JPG. On a minor note, I finished my seat back. I used 0.50" last-o-foam glassed on both sides and hinged to my one piece carbon seat. The whole thing slips right out. I got this idea from Bill Clapp. Also, I cut the seat back to make a 1/3 - 2/3 split back so part can act as a map holder/arm rest/cup holder when flying solo. See the pic at http://www.geocities.com/djramccoop1/Seat_15.JPG. Lastly, I have spent the last 2-3 weeks working on my canopy. I started with a stock KR2 Canopy frame. I "flattened" it to make more head room and added 4.25" risers on each side to raise the canopy to fit me. Then, I took Mark L's hinge design and modified it to mount to the fuselage sides. I am really happy with how this is coming together. Take a look at a few pics at http://www.geocities.com/djramccoop1/Canopy.html. I know it's not finished, but it looked so good, I figured I would share it. :-) I have plenty more pictures, but I just haven't stopped long enough to get them posted to the website. I'm trying to get this thing in the air by the end of 2005. Also, I kept most of my pics indoors to keep from depressing Mark J any more. KR> HS Update
Dan wrote: > Why did you decide not to use the airfoil on the stab? Dan, I guess the short answer is personal preference. My "mission statement" for my KR is to build it as stock and light as possible. Besides the engine selection, I am only planning three structural mods: 1) Aerodynamic balances, 2) a recessed speed brake, & 3) conversion to the AS5046 airfoil for the wings. I figure the less mods means the less time building. With that said, the 3 spars for the HS came with the plane cut and ready. My understanding is most of the drag in the stock KR tail comes from the HS angle of incidence rather than the airfoil, so I decided to keep the HS stock and just add the balances. I'm certain others will disagree and that's the beauty of this plane, build it your own way... :-) ps. I'm still looking forward to seeing your KR sometime this Fall! Am I measuring something wrong? Why would the measurement be a 1/4 inch difference? I would think the measurement would get smaller as you move aft. > Finally, does the bevel, that is required on the aft spar on the vertical fin so the fuselage plywood will glue flat, go or continue all the way up the spar? I think I know the answer but I want to make sure I don't mess something up. John, My plans (KR2) show the stern post to be 1 3/4" wide. I actually went out and measured mine and it is 1 3/4" on front beveled to 1 1/2" on the aft side. When you add the fuse plywood sides to it, then it's about 2" across the front beveled to 1/3/4", which is the width of the rudder spar. On the bevel question, you don't bevel the spar all the way to the top because the degree of bevel to accept the fuselage ply is different from the bevel for the airfoil. I would bevel only enough to install the stern post (about a foot or so), then as Larry suggester, glue your vertical rib template in place before shaping the rest of your stern post. I hope this answers your question. good luck. Dean Cooper Jacksonville, FL Email me at dean_coo...@bellsouth.net See my KR project at www.geocities.com/djramccoop1/KR2_Home.html

Mark wrote: >Has anyone built independantly adjustable rudder pedals, and if so how? Mark, The quickest and easiest way I can think of is to make some "platform" blocks to either permanently or temporarily attach to the forward side of the passenger pedals. These could move the pedals aft 2-3 inches, while maintaining the rudder pedal attach point. Obviously, this does not address braking, which would have to be addressed differently (two completely independant pedals and brake system), but if you're looking for her to take the controls in flight, this might work. This was just what came to mind. I have not tested nor seen these in action (my disclaimer... :-) Good Luck. KR> G-Limits - Enough already
Joe wrote: >At do you know, preferably first hand, about flying the KR2 at gross weights approaching 1300 pounds? Joe, As you can see, the value of the KRnet is that you can throw a question out there and get a lot of opinions. In some cases, your original question can mutate into another (gross weights into G limitations). To try and address your original question, the KR was designed for an 800lb gross weight. However, the average that I have seen are flying generally in the 1100-1200lb gross weight range (this is just my limited observation); however, there may be a few beyond that. Clearly, if you increase your gross weight beyond the plans (800lb), then you need to understand the consequences (ie, G limits, climb performance, etc) and MAYBE make some changes to compensate (ie, different engine, larger horizontal stabilizer, etc), but you need to do your own research as it is your life on the line. Also, as Colin stated, another important thing as you add weight is to watch your CG, it's critical you keep it forward, perferably in the forward half of the CG range. As always, your results may vary... Welcome to the KRnet.Happy building. ps. Having gathering withdrawals while trying to dodge Hurricane Jeanne... I'm going to work on the KR all day tomorrow since the weather will be terrible and my wife thought I was going to still be in Mt Vernon anyway... :-) Dean Cooper Jacksonville, FL Email me at dean_coo...@bellsouth.net See my KR project at www.geocities.com/djramccoop1/KR2_Home.html

KR> Polyisocyanurate Foam
Netters, I went over to the insulation company today and had him cut me off a 2" 'slice' from the 41"x96" block. I found out it is Polyisocyanurate Foam under the brand name of "NilFram", which is in the urethane family. From what I have read up on this on the internet, "Polyiso" is the next generation polyurethane and the major difference is Polyiso has better flame retardant characteristics. It's 2.2 pound density, which adds a little weight, but I can get it whenever I need it, in whatever size, less expensive, and without shipping. Here is the brochure on it that he gave me: http://www.geocities.com/djramccoop1/NilFram_Brochure.pdf Also, it sands and shapes identical to the polyurethane I got from Wicks. KR> Urethane Foam
Netters, I just got off the phone with an old friend of mine (who I haven't talk to in several years) who is in the insulation business here in Jax. I was looking for urethane foam in bulk thicknesses. He said he gets it in bun sizes 41"x 29"x 96" long and can cut it to any specifications I need. His price is $0.50 (US) per board foot (12x12x1) or $6 per cubic foot. That appears to be about 40% cheaper than Wicks with no shipping since I would pick it up. It would also be great to have one soild piece of foam for the leading and trailing edges for the wings. Is there anything I should be looking for or cautious of when buying this from a non-aviation parts company? I looked through the archives and couldn't find anything specific to this question. KR> Carbon Seat
Netters, After a 4 month hiatus (Summer projects, kids stuff, etc), I finished my carbon seat today. The link is below. It's built entirely out of foam, glass, and carbon fiber and rests on the spars without any center supports. It holds me standing in the middle with minimal flexing. It's amazing how strong this stuff is. It weighs in at just shy of 4 lbs (3 lbs 15ozs). How does that compare to others? I'm not sure exactly how much the stock sling seat and all of it's hardware weighs, but this seat puts my butt about 1.25" off the bottom of the fuselage... :-) http://www.geocities.com/djramccoop1/Seat.html See you at the gathering!! Mark, Since you are feeding directly from the wing tanks with no header, your fuel pumps will always be on (?) and therefore, I'm not sure the vacuum created by the pumps will allow the tanks to level each other. My original concern was that if you sustained a leak in one tank in flight and began to lose fuel, you should be able to see it on the fuel gauges, but then not be able to shut off the bad tank in order to safely make it back to an airport. It might be a good idea to install a valve right before the line goes through the fuselage on each side that you can stick your fingers down in between the seat and the fuselage side to switch it off in an emergency. I'm sure there is a better idea out there, this was just my initial thought... I went to talk to a person whose name I have misplaced, but he is the owner of Sky King Aviation at Chandler Field in Mesa, AZ, and is an instructor, flies anything multi-engine, jet, Bonanza, RV, Lancair, and many others and says the most interesting, most fun and neatest of them all is the KR. BUT--he was ferrying one to Maryland, packed in with his Father, when, in cruise, he noticed the ball over to one side, so he applied right rudder, the ball went to the corner, he pressed harder on the rudder and the plane pitched down so violently that he hit his head on the canopy-the more rudder, the worse it became. Not knowing what was happening, he let go of all controls and the plane recovered immediately, and in so doing noticed that his foot had slipped over on the LEFT rudder pedal on the pasenger side, so he was pressing left when he wanted to use right and thought he WAS using right. His explanation was that in cruise the KR is trying to fly tail high and the HS is therefore holding the tail down , but when he swung the plane sideways, the HS must have gotten blanked out so that it was no longer holding the tail down so up it went! And he is pretty sure of his diagnosis. If this had happened at a low altitude, he would have bought the farm. So a slip, at least a strong one , could be dangerous on approach, since Larry is experiencing exactly the same thing. The two descriptions of the circumstances and the plane's reaction are strikingly similar. Per wrote: >Would it be possible to do this by cutting the spring bar close to the bracket and moving the whole thing(bracket and the cut off part of the spring bar) to the rear face of the main spar on the stub wing Per, Am I understanding you correctly that you have a single spring bar supported by 3 brackes and you want to cut off the 2 ends (with brackets) and bolt them to the aft side of the forward spar? If so, I can't imagine that each bracket is designed to handle to pressure of a single spring. Also, I'm not sure the spring leg is designed to operate with one wheel and not count on the distribution of weight, etc. If I am understanding you correctly, then I would not go that route, but I may not be following you. If you have pictures, you can send them to me offnet and I will post them for you to show everyone. Good luck. KR>contributions
Mark, et al: Thanks for handling the recognition. I can't say enough about how much value I get from this network. ps. It is disappointing that only 20 of us contributed. I realize that many people are tight on finances, but if you can afford to build a plane in first place, then you have $5-10 to pay for the service you get on this site. I hope we don't get to the point where we have to resort to charging for a subscription to keep it up... This is good information at a high level, but really doesn't support either side simply because "Loss of Power" is far too vague to explain which is a better engine design. For example, what about fuel starvation? This has to explain a number of the accidents and may nothing to do with the engine itself. Also, It's unclear from the email if the study only looked at experimental aircraft. Obviously, when you have Joe Homebuilder building the plane in his garage, it is going to be subject to inconsistent results. Some builders will build the firewall forward wrong and show up on an NTSB report. If the study is not specific to experimentals, then I would expect these results, simply because I suspect you will have a higher number of accidents in training aircraft (certified engines), due to pilot error, which drives your numerator up and your percentage for loss of power accidents down. Another obvious point, the plans call for an auto conversion (VW) engine... This should not be taken to be an attack on the author, Just stating the obvious (at least to me) :-) ps. What about a prop strike which results in loss of power :-) Dean Cooper Jacksonville, FL Email me at dean_coo...@bellsouth.net See my KR project at www.geocities.com/djramccoop1/KR2_Home.html
KR>Conversion to AS5046 airfoil
Netters, Well, I decided to convert to the new AS5046 airfoil. Thanks to some insight from Les Criscillo on exactly how to go about it, I have successfully cut out my aft spar. It took me about 2 hours to cut it out and clean up the joints. I just got back from Kinko's, where they printed up the airfoil templates for $11.37 with tax. Now it's on to cutting out the new ribs and re-securing the aft spar to the fuselage. I have taken pictures through the process and will post once it is complete. KR>Calendars
Netters, While I was at CopyMAX earlier this week, I saw a brochure about personalized calendars (the spiral bound type) and inquired. They advised me to bring 13 digital pictures (12 months + cover) and they would make them up for the following cost: QtyUnit Cost 1 $24.99 2-11$19.99 12-50 $15.99 51+ $12.99 If we got 51 or more, it would be about $14 a calendar. I thought people were willing to pay $20, which would be $6 a calander going towards the gathering fund. Steve, are you still interested in to doing this if we get enough interest? KRnet, is there still interest? If not, I'll drop it... Dean Cooper Jacksonville, FL Email me at dean_coo...@bellsouth.net See my KR project at www.geocities.com/djramccoop1/KR2_Home.html

You could use one of those over the shaft of the rivet on the inside of the fuselage without having to pull the mandrel through distorting the rivet shaft. KR>Landing Gear
Netters, Well, my first New Year's resolution was to get the landing gear on my KR before I had to return to work tomorrow. I'm happy to say I completed that resolution! I want to extend my appreciation to Dan H, Mark J, Mark L, and Dan D for your help and advice with various questions. Being a "newbie", It was really great to have some knowledgeable builders to ask and I appreciate it! Here are the links to the pages if you're interested: http://www.geocities.com/djramccoop1/Landing_Gear.html http://www.geocities.com/djramccoop1/Wheels_Brakes.html Also, with this conversion to tri-gear, I have a tailwheel for sale. It's a 4" full swivel/steerable tailwheel that was new when installed and has never seen a runway. It looks exactly like the one in the Aircraft Spruce catalog on page 224 (part P/N L-691). It has a 45 degree angle with a bowed 1.25" x 13" spring along with all of the hardware. This is perfect for a grass strip set-up or can even go on a different airplane. The tailwheel can accept a 1.5" spring if desired. The tailwheel and spring new go for approx $270. I am selling for $125 plus shipping. Please email me off net at dean_coo...@bellsouth.net if interested. Here is the link to see it: http://www.geocities.com/djramccoop1/Tailwheel.html ps. We do monitor a lot of the builder websites and always reply to all comments on Aircraft Spruce (good or bad) but we had not seen the two you sent. If you know the email addresses for these two builders, please let me have them so I can respond. Aircraft Spruce handles a large volume of orders each week and 96% of the orders ship the same day they are placed. Orders for cut materials such as spruce, metal, etc. can take a few days but rarely would an order take 6 weeks. I am sure that we could have filled the order for the spruce very quickly and a sales rep must have been mistaken regarding the time involved, and I am sorry that it resulted in a lost order and a dissatisfied customer. We work very hard to provide excellent service for all of our customers, and I am sure that you will find the service from Aircraft Spruce to be to your satisfaction. We do understand the need for fast service to builders and we deliver it each day. We also guarantee the lowest prices on all products, and the quality of the products we provide is the best in the business. Again, thanks for bringing this matter to my attention. I look forward to your reply and we hope to be of service to you throughout your project. Regards, Jim Irwin President, Aircraft Spruce
