Finally the Rt.aileron is made. The counter wieght came out really well.  Once
I got the lead melted I poured it into a wooden box that I made in about 2
minutes with my brad nailer. This weight was a little lite.  So made it a
little wider and it came out perfect.

First a comment before my question.  In the book it says to use an old pot to
melt lead down for the aileron counter weight.  I'll give you some advise. What
you consider an old pot is might be different then what your wife considers an
old pot is. Be forewarned

How do you melt a 5 lbs chunk of lead on the stove? I did an internet search.
Lead melts at 621 degrees.  I'm not even getting close to that.

Here in the US. It is NOT recommended to buy a project under construction
without a builders log.  The thing is you have to prove that 51% of the

heard Canada has a much more stringent process. My opinion, do not buy it
without a builders log. You're buying nothing but a problem.

Hi All;
I am considering a project in the U.S. that has no documentation whatsoever and
am wondering about DAR inspections.
I want to import this project into Canada and our inspections require a pre
cover (before box spars etc,are closed in) .
What I am wondering is if I might find a number or something that shows it was
done in the U.S .
In Canada each component is stamped or stickered to show it has been done.
The project is fairly complete all spars are closed, wings closed etc.although
it would still meet 51% requirement here in Canada.
I f I can show the inspections I an import as parts and then continue it.
Any thoughts about this?
Thanks

I'll be ordering my aileron hardware from Wicks soon. In looking in the book at

problems with sufficient clearance between the heads of the bolts if they're
lined up with each other?  Or should they be offset. I believe I've seen some
people use countersunk bolts. Any advice would be appreciated.

You've got a point, Oscar.  I'm not concerned about the wires and
hoses, they're pretty obvious, but  there were several items I made
"mental" notes about reverse order on install and which bolts had
tabs attached for securing cables, etc. and the "mental" notes are a
bit hard to read this morning.  Maybe another cup of coffee and a
sweet roll will remove some of the blurriness...

As for the hangar, I'm lucky to be in the FBO heated and well lit
hangar and the cleanliness is just a matter of picking up after
myself.  After 49 years of marriage some training is hard to ignore. :-)

?That should have said "good clamp design". You do want even pressure over the

I have seen pictures of builders shaving a little off the front of the frame
with a router to get a perfect glue joint with the fire wall.

You always want to let the epoxy soak into both surfaces before lightly
clamping down.?

Last weekend I had my first flight review in 24 years. My instructor was a

So I did. All on my Avare GPS app,?E6B app and my weather app. I thought I
did a good job.? Well he didn't like it.? He wanted me to do it the
old way.? With a sectional, a plotter and a wiswheel and a phone call to
flight service for a weather briefing. ?And god forbid?if
I?opened my GPS in flight.
After he signed my log book. We talked about it. He said the most pilots
still plan on paper and use paper sectionals in flight.
My question to you KR pilots is how do you?plan XC's? Do you use
programs,?Apps?like foreflight and others or a combination of
both.? or?do you just?use?paper? Just curious.

Larry H,First, I want to thank you for your hospitalityfor the two nights I
came over and visited ?all of you at Oshkosh I had alot of fun being this was
my first time.My opinion on the ADSB ?is that having the duel band receiver is
nice but not really necessary. ?It is ture, you will not see the bigger
airplanes and they will not see you if you are NOT in range of a ground
station. If you are receiving a ground ?station everyone will see everyone.
?The only time you will be interacting with the big airplanes will be by bigger
airports and they will have coverage from ground base coverage. If you fly alot
in remote areas then duel band would be handy. This is what I've learned. ?My
opinion might change when I start flying my plane.

Hello,
Oshkosh is now finished for 2016.
I decided to do a tiny bit of research this year at Oshkosh because of the
upcoming date certain mandatory ADS-B/see and be seen thing coming. I attended
a Bendix/King seminar explaining it all plus I talked to a few vendors and
pilots like Rob, Mark, Larry.

It is a simple matter to separate the ethanol out of the gas.? They recommend
using Premium fuel due to a drop in octane when taking the ethanol out.? Get a
clear tank, add ethanol fuel, dump in water and watch it separate out the
ethanol/water solution.? Drain out the ethanol/water and you only have unleaded
auto fuel left over.? If you want the specific amount of water to use per
gallon, Google the question and you will easily find several methods for doing
this.? Simple and easy to use.? Doesn't take very long to do it either..

Another solution was to add a long length of clear tubing to the gas can with a
shut off valve at the bottom.? Dump in the water to the fuel, turn the can
upside down and shake.? Watch the water/ethanol separate in the clean tubing;
open the valve and let the ethanol/water drain out;? what you have left is pure
gasoline.

Works great.? Your choice as to whether or not you want to try it.

I had an old Cadillac with a computer
display that would read out my
real-time fuel consumption.? I imagine most cars have
 such things these
days, althoiugh the Oldsmobile that I replaced my beloved
 Cadillac with
doesn't.? Whenever I would drive cross country and got
 into the mid-west
where ethanol is sold, my fuel mileage would always go
 down.?

I'm impressed by the statement "The fastest cars in the
 country use it."
so obviously I'm suffering form a misconception.? I
 inherently disliked
it because it decreased my fuel mileage and because
 government welfare to
all the farmers who grow corn for ethanol annoyes me
 too.? Plus, I've
never trusted it in my KR.? If I do ever use auto fuel
 in the KR
(GP-2180) I always use Chevron Supreme, which is what I
 always use in my
other vehicles.? Calling Chevron headquarters in San
 Francisco several
years ago, they told me Supreme has 7% ethanol in it.?
 It may be more
now, or less, but thinking I could avoid ethanol by buying
 top grade
gasoline was not correct.? I think it's all got ethanol
 in it, except for
boutique racing shops that sell ethanol-free gas for
 racing.? Why would
racing shops sell ethanol-free gas for racing if "the
 fastest cars in the
country use it."? I'm not arguing here since I'm not
 very smart, but just
 relating my experiences.?

Steve Bennett said he always ran my engine on ethanol-free
 gas - which he
could get in Omaha.? Here in San Diego it's only
 available from
specialized racing shops.? From Steve's comments on
 operation of my
engine, I've tried to keep ethanol out of the tanks but I
 have
occasionally put some Chevron Supreme in.? It's always
 mixed with
whatever 100LL is already in the tank.? In my aux tank
 in the wing, made
from vinyl ester, I've been religious about never putting
 anything but
100LL in it.? I've heard too many stories about car gas
 wreaking havoc to
tanks and fuel components for me to use it more than very
 occasionally.
Just my experience.? I'm still learning new things . .
 .hope we all are.

KR> PARACHUTES

2016-05-11 Thread Paul Visk

About flying over the top. I would like to give an educated opinion on this
subject.?If you want to fly over a cloud deck. You really need to have the
ability to keep the top side up if something happens to where you have to glide
through that deck. ?I'm not saying you need to have a full six pack with all
the gizmos and a IFR rating. ?Just a simple attitude indicator or a turn and
back gauge with a VSI. AND practice with a hood. Whenever I go flying with
another pilot. I get some hood time.?When Ray and I went on a sightseeing
flight last year at McMinnville. ?We had to get a pop up IFR clearance to get
back. ?I wasn't current but I had no problems getting back because I
practice.?All I'm saying is. If your going to put your self in that situation
be prepared. And you may not need to think about a parachute. This goes with
flying at night also.?I forgot to mention. ?I did have a CFII next to me when
Ray and I went up.?

KR> KR Gathering: Sponsor update

2016-04-29 Thread Paul Visk
I stopped by SRT Aviation at Mt. Vernon Airport and talked to the president of
the FBO. ?Richard and I talked for a couple of hours. ?He was wearing a
Airforce cap. ?It turnes out he worked on B-52's just as I did. ?We could have
talked for hours. ?But my electronic log book in my truck was saying, ?Paul
it's time to go or we won't get home.?For the planes that fly in for the
gathering. ?He will be giving a substantial fuel discount. (to be
announced)?Thank you Richard. ?John added SRW's and Drury ?Inn links to the
sponsor section on the website. ?

2016-04-17 Thread Paul Visk

Today was a great day. ?Another day closer to completion. ??Mark L. and Larry
came over to help me start my Corvair for the first time on my airplane. We
missed Rob Schmitt ?He was weathered out. ?There was about 15 people from my
EAA chapter that came out to watch the show.?After Mark figured out a problem
that the condenser was not grounded being it was installen on the front shelf
and after I added a ground wire to the condenser. ?The engine started up with a
fury.

Mark / Netters
I have run the CG numbers many times using four different datum reference
points and have determined that I need to move the engine three inches fwd of
the WW location for a standard KR-2S. As Joe Horton noted, my plane is 1'-3"
longer than any of the other planes that responded to his request for
dimensions. My flying CG with me and partial fuel to max gross wt at 1320 goes
from 1.25" aft of the fwd limit to 3.5" aft of the fwd limit, well within the
"preferred 6" CG range. All the calculations came within a 1/16" no matter
where I set the datum.

My next step is to build the cowling. Ron Willet is making a female mold off a
cowling plug that I have as we speak. I will do the same after I make some
slight changes to the plug, to clear the alternator. My question for Mark and
fellow netters is where to purchase carbon fiber cloth other than Aircraft
Spruce as they are pretty pricey. Also need to know which weave is best to use.
Thanks in advance for any info,
Pete Klapp
?

Pete,

I don't think you'll regret moving the engine forward. These planes put on
weight as they age. Everything you lighten up seems to be in front of the CG.
Everything you add to the plane seems to be behind the CG. When I did a new W
for my plane last week I was surprised at how much the CG has crept back over
the last 20 years. It's still good, but that's because I started out with a
very forward CG.

A quick google search shows that Aircraft Spruce is pretty competitive on the
price for CF cloth if you're buying small amounts.? You can get much better
prices, but you have to buy in bulk (like100 yds) to get them.? One of the
better deals I saw was buying remnant on Ebay.? Like 5 yds for $125, which
might be about right for your cowl.? Of course you could build the cowl out of
glass.? Then you can shorten your mount 1/2" thanks to the heavier cowl. :o)?

KR> Carbon Fiber

2016-03-21 Thread Paul Visk
I made my with 3/32 birch. I followed ?Mark Langford's design and mine is as
stiff as a-well you know-.?I was going to cut my holes ?after I did my flight
testing.?We've had some pretty intense discussions on holes or no holes. ?So I
was going to do both and document the difference. Start with no holes and then
add the holes. ?I personally believe the holders are more efficient. ?Maybe we
get a few of us doing that so we can figure that out. ?Holes are no holes and
finally put it to rest.

Carbon fiber is my new favorite building material. ?I want to use carbon fiber
to build the belly board for my KR2. ?I used the material to extend my
horizontal stabilizer and I love the way it worked out.
So, do you believe that one eighth inch plywood sandwiched between carbon fiber
would be strong enough for a belly board 32 by 9 inches??
-How many layers??-My belly board will have 2 inch holes. ?Do I cut the holes
before or after I laminate with carbon fiber? ?(Yes, our long discussions have
convinced me. ?Please don't think less of me If you believe I don't need
holes)-what reinforcements could I use, keeping it thin and aerodynamic.
You are all awesome! Thank you.

Grants Pass Or. K3S8. to rent a 172. The instructor and I flew out to Brooking
Or. KBOK Then down the coast to Crescent City Ca.KCEC then back to Grants
Pass.?On the way out to Brooking. We flew though Canyons to the coast. I
haven't done that since Alaska. ?From Brooking to Crescent. We flew 500 ft of
the ocean along the coast. That was fun flying around the big rocks. ?On the
way back I got some hood time. When we were almost back. I told Walt I really
enjoyed the flight and wanted to get checked out. So at the end we did some
