KR and Corvair netters. I have listed a few items for sale at http://jackskr2.webstarts.com/ I have a Ellison EFS-3A, a Sensenich 54X52 prop, a dynamo and regulator and corvair intake for sale at this time. If nobody on the nets are interested I'll list them on Ebay in a few days. If there is anything KR related that you need let me know as I will be parting out my KR. Jack Cooper Chuckey TN.
KR> Cherokee Uprising
Barrett Your situation may be different from mine but since I bought the Grumman and got it flying I have hardly touched the KR. I'm having too much fun flying the Grumman and spending all my money on it so can't afford to work on the KR. After flying the Grumman for a year now, I have decided to part out the KR so I can make some avionic upgrades on the Grumman. I have already sold the engine and will be offering other items on KR and Corvair nets in the near future. This is primarily a financial decision but I think the thing that convinced me to sell out was Marks Engine failure because I would be pushing the Corvair engine just as hard as Mark does. Most of my flying in the Grumman is at wide open throttle and yes it does maneuver real good too. I flew with John Shafer at the last gathering and he said that the Grumman is the nearest certified plane to a KR that he had ever flown. I had about the same comments from a RV pilot a while back. I'll still be on the nets for some time and will be at the KR gatherings so don't count me out yet. KR> iFly 700
Larry I have the Ifly 700 and love it. It is very user friendly, easy to enter flight plans and easy to change plans in flight. It has all the airport information including approach plates, airport diagrams, and frequencies. I still have paper sectionals and airport facilities directory but never take them out. If you update before flight you will also have TFRs etc. The one drawback is that it is not sun lite readable but they also sell a visor that you can attach to it. I mounted mine to the panel with Ram mounts and built a visor into my glare shield. In my opinion you can spend a hole lot more and not get what the Ifly has to offer. Fly to Tennessee over the holidays and I'll give you a demo. If you did, I was just wondering > > what your thoughts were after flying with it. > > Mark Jones (N886MJ) ++ I recently turned loose of my wallet and purchased a reconditioned unit ($499) and have made two flights with the unit. I think it is GREAT for the money paid. The single feature I thought I would not like after receiving it was the sectional overlay. When flying any direction other then north, the map is rotated from 0 to 180 degrees (upside down when flying south) and the print is upside down. It functions exactly as if you were holding a paper map. However, a single press of the button "North up" will rotate the map for reading. I called the Airventure Pilot company and they explained that it would be impossible to digitalize all the info contained on the sectional to have it work otherwise. Turns out it really is not a problem. I always flew with my maps upside down when flying other then North to give me a better reference to the geography anyway. The basic package is really all you need. They offer a GPS antenna and external battery pack but there is no need for the external antenna. I can pick up 6 satellites in my house. The unit does require external power but I hooked it up to aircraft power and with the flip of a switch I have backup power for my avionics from my small fuel pump backup battery. With the amount of information you can get in flight and all the capabilities the unit has, I'm amazed it doesn't sell for twice the price. I continue to use my seven year old Lowrance 500 as backup and the two agree within 1 mph, 1 degree on heading, and 15 to 20 feet altitude. I do occasionally experience the unit locking up and have to reboot if I do a lot of screen switching at a very fast rate. If that happens, any flight plan I have programmed or other data comes back up on the reboot. I do find the "Table of contents" in the manual a bit lacking and I'd like to see an "Index of terms" in the back but, all in all, I give it a 9.9 on a scale of 10. Hey, even my KR is not a perfect 10. :-) Larry Flesner ___ Search the KRnet Archives at http://www.maddyhome.com/krsrch/index.jsp to UNsubscribe from KRnet, send a message to krnet-le...@mylist.net please see other KRnet info at http://www.krnet.org/info.html

KR> flying stories ?
Mike ask: Where are all the inspirational flying stories that keeps the fires burning in all of us builders ? I have been reluctant to jump in on this because I'm not flying a KR but it is Experimental related. My friend and neighbor Mac built a RV9A but his health is such that he does not want to take a flight physical right now. Another mutual friend of ours who is a CFI and has a RV7 flew the test flight period on the Mac's 9. Now he is checking me out in the RV9A so that we can both help Mac and fly with him until he gets his health problems solved. In just over a week I have flown 5.5 hours in the RV and need to get 10 hours for Mac's insurance to cover me. Mac spared no expense on his airplane and so has all the latest Garmin and Dynon glass on the panel. How many two place single engine airplanes have you seen that have leather heated seats? My problem is I have always flown steam gauges and so trying to learn these new fangled video games has been a task for me. I do like the attitude indicator display but trying to interpret heading and altitude and airspeed without needles takes all my attention. I know those of you who fly glass panels regularly love them and would never want another steam gauge but it takes some getting used to. The RV has great climb and cruse performance and handles very good. My only complaint (I don't know if I'm complaining about myself or the airplane) I can't get full aft stick because of my fat belly and the five point harness the stick hits the harness buckle before it hits the stops. I do have the seat adjusted as far back as it will go. That's my flying story probably not very inspirational for a KR builder but at least I'm not growing roots on the couch. Sorry to say that my KR is sitting in the basement looking lonesome and forgotten. I haven't worked on it since I bought the Grumman just over a year ago. The Grumman takes all my dollars and time but gives me a lot of flying pleasure in return. Jack Cooper Chuckey TN. - Original Message -

KR> Home from gathering
Dan and I landed at Greene County Airport last night at 10:00. GCY is about 5 miles from my airpark but we do not have runway lights at the airpark. We refueled in Bowling Green KY. It was getting dark by the time we took off and we checked the position lights but had a little problem in that my instrument lights were not working but I had a small LED light that clips on a hat bill and we used it to illuminate the instrument. At 7500 we were VFR but on instruments because of the very dark moonless nights. We flew over a cloud layer for about 12 hours, really only about 20 minutes but we were sure glad to see the lights as we got nearer to East Tennessee. We also landed without a landing light at GCY, not one of my best landings but the airplane was still flyable. It was a good gathering but I was flying so much that I didn't get much interaction with the people and the KRs. I did enjoy flying with everyone and look forward to next year. Dan will probably never fly with me again after our night fright, ah night flight. Hope everyone made it home safely. Jack Cooper Chuckey TN.

KR> Aircraft Tax Question
I recently got a letter and tax form from the state of Tennessee wanting me to pay sales tax on my KR. It ask if I bought it in state or out of state and if out of state what sales tax I paid. It also ask if it was a Kit and where I got the kit. I wrote them a letter with some pictures explaining that this was a plans built airplane not a kit and that I bought all parts from suppliers and paid appropriate tax on each individual part that I bought. They must have bought it because I haven't heard anything more from them but then again it is a bureaucracy so it may take a year or so to make a decision. Include the Popular Mechanix cover story with a picture of Ken Rand and his original KR-1. Put a nice package of this info together for them - educate them. They only know RV's and factory builts when it comes to planes so you have to inform them of just how inexpensive and special the KR is - made out of styrofoam and plywood. KR> Storm in Tennessee
Greene County TN, where I live has been declared a disaster area because of the tornado that hit about 5 miles from my home killing 6 people. I sat on my deck and watched a storm pass NW of us that spawned tornadoes in Virginia then the storm which spawned the tornado nearby passes SW of me but I got some hail from it. Thank goodness I had no damage because I just recently recovered from damage from a frozen pipe in my attic which caused several thousand dollars damage to my house. My heart and prayers go out to those who lost life and property in this storm and all the storms over the past month. Jack Cooper

I see that the link I provided did not bring up the seat belts. They are part # 13-00404. Jack Cooper Chuckey TN. Netters I have a two sets of seatbelts I would like to sell. These are new belts from AC spruce that I bought for the Grumman in Nov last year but were the wrong retainer for the Grumman so I had to get a new set. Check them out at http://www.aircraftspruce.com/search/search.php . As you see they are $47.50 for each set and I have two sets. They are navy blue and will accept sholder harnesses. KR> Confession
Vaughan My cores have not been torn down and inspected. For shipping that far I would suggest that you go through William Wynne who has cores on the shelf, inspected and ready for rebuild. I'm sure ther e would be a significant shipping cost to NZ and would be a shame to get a core that may not be good. http://www.flycorvair.com/ - Original Message - From: "Vaughan Thomas" <v...@xtra.co.nz> To: "KRnet" <kr...@mylist.net> Sent: Saturday, February 5, 2011 3:41:22 PM Subject: Re: KR> Confession What a confession - the sin of temptation. But on a serious note, any chance of securing one or two corvair core engines ? From Jack or some one else on KRnet ? Down under here in EnZed (New Zealand) Corvairs are like rocking horse shit -just dont exist in core engine form. Original cooling system not required but would not argue if it was an issue. Arranging freight may be a hassle? but I may be able to find container space with other stuff to NZ. Basic pallet load, if secured to pallet should be OK. I had all but given up on getting Corvair power & had settled on Sub ea81 as alternative. But now my hopes are up & the project may step into overdrive. I have been seduced by the Goddess of Grumman who tempted me with a beautiful AA-1B which had a recent paint job (spring 2010) and new glass but a wounded wing. The previous owner made a downwind landing on a 1400' grass strip and the wing hit a pole. Mostly skin and rib damage, no spar damage. In 2006 the tired old Lycoming O-235 was replaced with a newly overhauled O-320 and at present has only 68 hours on it since major. The Goddess told me I could buy the airplane for 14K and for another 3-4K I could be flying. She lied-- I'm presently at about 21K and still haven't flown. I brought it home on Oct 26th and started working on it under the supervision of an A/AI. Together we did a very thorough annual, and repaired the wing. Last Saturday I thought all was done and time to start testing so out to the runway for a runup and static RPM check. A previous static check yielded 2300 RPM but now all I'm showing is 2000 RPM. Further testing shows the tachometer to be off but I think we still have some troubleshooting to do to get the engine running just right. Tachometer is back ordered so it may be a couple more weeks before I can do any more. What does this mean for the KR. Well I know what happens to most experimentals when the builder gets lured into a spam can and I can't promise that it won't happen to my KR but I hope that I will continue to work on it . Right now the KR has had the wings removed and was moved to the basement but that is because of another problem I had a few days ago. A pipe (CPVC) froze and busted in my attic so I have had drywall workers in the hangar for about a week. I sent the Grumman to a neighbors hangar and the KR to the basement. Between the Grumman, water damage and the tax man I got in a squeeze for cash so I sold my Corvair engine. Roy had it at the time so I called him and made a quick sale. I do have other corvair cores so someday when the Goddess of cash smiles on me again I'll start over on the engine. One thing for sure I will be at the KR gathering in September . Mark With you being the only exception I know, That is what engineers do, they design things. They don't build it and don't have to pay for it, they just design it and specify it, and it seems the more elaborate and expensive it is the better. That is why you were selected the engineer of the year by your piers because you have common sense to go with your engineering expertise. KR> Canopy Gluing- Epoxy
Why not drill it and screw it? use flat screws and hence easy to concel. Be very carefull drilling the canopy. If you are having to pull the sides of the canopy in to make it fit the frame a drill hole will make a weak point which can crack. Don't ask how I know. Jack Cooper Chuckey TN.

KR> Friday off topic; GPS Software
I have been looking at that same system and thinking it is a good buy for what it does. A G armin 296 is the only other moving map that I have used. If you have ever used one of the Garmins let me know how it compares. I watched the video and have read some of the website and don't remember seeing terrain warnings. I'm sure there are other features that need to be compared but the Adventure Pilots big screen and touch screen icons are a plus.
