Roy A BIG THANKS to you, Mark, William, the airport staff and everyone that helped make Corvair College #20 such a great success !!! Great weekend, good food, wonderful friends It just doesn't get any better There isn't another group that can that can boast the kind of helpful members that the Corvair motorheads have. I'm another step closer to getting my project in the air. Thanks to everyone that helped me reach this goal. Pete Klapp, building KR-2S N729PK, Canton, Ohio

I should mention that there's a $79 fee for attendance, but that mainly pays for your meals. William has historically held these "Colleges" for free, but after realizing how disruptive it is to have people drifting off in search of lunch and dinner that the meals are now catered. Everybody sits down together to eat. These affairs are "total immersion" into Corvair engine building. No pressure from me, but a good opportunity for those considering the Corvair Mark Langford ML at N56ML.com website at http://www.N56ML.com

NetHeads, Here's a reminder that registration for Corvair College 20 ends tonight at midnight CST. If you're considering or planning on using a Corvair engine in your KR, you'll get a big head start on it by attending this or another college It might help to know that it's not a bunch of sheep sitting at desks while William Wynne preaches to the flock, it's about learning about, building, and testing Corvair engines. Some folks will show up with grungy old engines and learn to tear them down, others will bring pristine parts they need "blessed" (assessed) by the experts, some will start building, others will finish building their engines, and still others will hang their completed engines on one of two engine test stands and run them and perform the initial break-in under the supervision of William or Roy.There will probably be 20 or more engines in some stage of construction spread out in the hangar. William will have impromptu "here's how you do this" discussions as various builders arrive at critical assembly points. This one's going to be in Michigan at Hillsdale airport (KJYM) June 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Joe Horton, Mark Jones, and I plan to fly our KRs in for the occasion (weather permitting). For more info, see halfway down http://www.flycorvair.com/hangar.html . To register, visit https://cc20.wufoo.com:443/forms/corvair-college-20-registration/ . As Joe Horton reported, he showed up at my place early Friday and put in two solid days of hard work getting my plane in shape to fly to the Barnwell South Caroline Corvair College. It was fantastic to have Joe helping...he did the engine installation perfectly, and with no direction from me at all. It was amazing. He also replaced a control cable that got dragged 40 miles down the highway to probably within a 64th of an inch of the "go-by" aileron cable. That's not as easy as it sounds because my installation (which is far from "maintenance freindly) doesn't allow for measuring the cable because it wraps around an inaccesible pulley out in the wingtip. Thanks again to Joe...it would have been a month before I was flying again had he not shown up to help. There are lots of stories to tell about that whole affair, but the biggest one that might help others is the ELT incident. Apparently when I set the tail down off the saw horse to roll the plane out of the hangar, I dropped it hard enough to set off the 406Mhz ELT. It wasn't until a half hour later that I put on my headset and heard the 5 watt bleed-over warbling sound of the ELT did I check the ELT and turn it off. So you can imagine the chain of events after that...an Air Force major from Air Force Rescue calling down my list of contacts, which started with my house (got the sleeping son and also got his attention), who called my wife at work, then the AF major called my father, all with the phrase of something like "we have an emergency locator signal from N56ML and are trying to contact Mark Langford". For the first time, I got a real tone of concern when she called me on my cell phone. She got a lot happier after I told her it was a false alarm, but the moral of the story is put YOUR cell phone number first on the list, because chances are that it'll be set off accidently way more times than due to a crash. If they can contact you first, it'll save a lot of concern in the family! The other takeaway is that this system really works, and it's FAST! It was another great Corvair College though, with several new CorvAircraft engines roaring to life for the first time. The test stand was in constant use, with a waiting list to run new engines. It was great to see everybody again, and I apologize for getting there late and leaving early. I was trying to beat weather on my end, and I came very close to spending the night in the same town I stayed in on my way the CC a couple of years ago... Only if I get if finished and installed on the plane. For now, it is just a side project. I think, for the most part, it is a pretty neat engine. The VW does have some things that are a lot better, like the accessory case, but I think with the fifth bearing options, it is now a viable option for an airplane engine. In fact, I think that the WW and Roy bearings are better than anything on a VW. Hey Guys, I just got home from CC #12. I was able to get there in m hay ghetto cruiser after a grueling 5 hr flight straight into the sun all afternoon Friday and a couple stops because I wasn't sure which I was going to run out of first (Sun light or fuel). Ed Fisher lives on a beautiful private park and he and his wife were incredible hosts. His life story could fill a full camp fire evening easily. Saturday a problem was discovered with the fifth bearing that I installed about 5 weeks ago and all day Saturday was spent installing an entirely new set up and I'll have 25 to 30 hours on this one in 4 or 5 weeks again. I met many new friends this week end and several old ones that the relationship grew. All you guys that I met and shook hands with remember your number cause I can not remember your names. The trip home with a brand new major part on the engine was just a little up on the anxiety scale that usually does not bother me. I wind at 9500 feet was a very good tail wind but something funny was going on with buffeting. I circled down through a cloud hole at Danville Va. cause I thought I was loosing my prop. When I got below the clouds it all got smooth again so I continued on from airport to airport just in case. Around Skyline Drive I climbed back up to 9500 and flew for about 150 miles there again and the same buffeting was happening although I stuck it out longer and found it was not continuous so i think it was something in the air. 4 hrs and 10 min to home including a 20 min fuel stop. The new fifth bearing seems to be OK so far. I just can't go without saying what a great group of men were there this week end. The level of experience and the expertise in all kinds of fields of industry is incredible and the common thread that I noticed was that the group as a whole were all achievers and can do attitudes that i am certain got them along well in their lives. I met John Kerneey for the first time and another stand out was Anthony who proudly serves America, I think is rank is Captain Purple. There were several other stand outs but me and names don't get along well. Just thank you all for sharing your lives with me for the weekend I will always cherish it. Well, I just got back from Corvair College. I met some really good people and learned a little. Mark L. and Joe H. were there along with Dan Weisman ( don't know if I got that right ), who made one of the Fifth Bearings and flew in with his Vair powered Sonex. I spent Friday night, all day Saturday and this morning at the event. Today's trip was the longest, because I flew the KR in, from Columbia Downtown. I only live 5 minutes away, so went by truck, both other days. I have to say, that there is no better group of people, other than maybe the KR group, that you will ever meet. As the morning was coming to an end today, something strange happened. I bought a Corvair Core and manual. Don't know if I will ever finish it, but I surely will get a good start on it over the winter. The best thing about this one is, it was inspected by more than one expert in the field, including WW. Next to the KR Gathering, this was the best week end that I can remember. Thanks to all the Vair people, WW and his wife, and Ed Fisher for a terrific time. KR> Corvair College and then some.....
I am back home from another interesting and tiring week at the Corvair college in Edgewater Florida. I drove down on Tuesday in my 66 coupe (corvair of course) and worked through Thurday night helping William Wynne assemble a couple of engines for customers and preping parts and stuff for the college. Thurday night I drove back home and then flew N41768 down to be there in the morning to finish test running an engine. People started showing up that afternoon and planes began to fly in. It was great to see Phil Maxon and Mark Langford. Joe Horton showed up later on as well as the Personal Cruiser (cool single seater). It was good to see three KRs together - planning on about 8 for next years college. WW made a challange to see who would have the most type of plane there next year - Zenith 601's or KR's. There were three and three this time. The college format was a little different but more relaxing and easier on everyone. About eighty people showed up and 9 corvairs flew. The first corvair award was handed outcalled the Steve Jone's award (KR pilot extrordinair that died last year) it was awarded to Mark Langford (Congrats!) for the great accomplishment of 292 safe flight hours in one year. I think it was great. Every year the trophy will be passed to another Corvair achiever...whether for hours flown, safety advances, records made, or all-around nice guy/gal. It is good for us to remember those who passed on before us in this way. A couple of cool things were the glass panel in Rick's 601way cool but still over my budget. Mark showed off his also way cool chart/gps on the computer - I may have to go that route. Mark, Gus, Phil, Joe and myself gave out a bunch of rides on both days of the college. A lot of fun was had by all. I believe there is an update at FLYCORVAIR.com with pics and stats if you wish to look. I stayed behind after everbody left and helped clean up a little and pack for my trip back home. I shall be returning to Corvair land later on this month to continue the work on the turbo installation in my KR - should be finished by the end of the year and test flown. Still have much to do - and the twin to build.when I have time... Keep building and flying Bill and 41768 - Sponsored Link Mortgage rates as low as 4.625% - $150,000 loan for $579 a month. VairHeads, This is a quickie report (I'll let others fill in the details), but I'm back from another excellent Corvair College. The new format of WW building an engine from start to finish with a running commentary was excellent, resulting in a great education for engine builders (see http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/corvair/cc2006/061112326m.jpg ). I wish I'd listened in on more of it, but also enjoyed talking to other pilots and engine builders. I met some more great folks, as usual. I'm sure Grace will work up a web page when she gets a chance. Those of you who missed it really missed a good one! Those who noticed the exhaust leak on my number 4 cylinder may be relieved to know that I made it back without succumbing to carbon monoxide poisoning. I had a 40 mph headwind much of the way on the way back (and it would have been worse had I gone to my usual 10,500'), so it took me 5 hours of flying to get back home, although the weather was great otherwise. I occupied myself with some testing at 7500', since it was a 59 degree OAT day. Based on what I learned today, I'm about ready to claim 162 mph as my "cruise" speed at 75% power. Something I'm on the hook for is a report on how the engine/prop/spinner balancing went. Ever since I put my homemade spinner/backplate on, I've wanted to have it balanced. Arnold Holmes hooked up his vibration equipment and measured the vibration levels on my engine. He started out at something like .500 inches/second (don't ask me to explain this) and ended up around .040" (I believe it was). I was skeptical that I'd see much difference, as I already thought it was a pretty smooth engine. Once settled in at altitude on the way back, it was absolutely amazing how smooth it was. I balanced a little flashlight on end on top of the panel, and it stood there for two hours until I dropped down into the turbulence to land at M38. The exhaust pulses on the bottom of the plane are now the primary source of vibration, not the engine. It feels so much better that I flew the last hour with the engine wide open, and it was really singing. It was less buzzy and really felt happy at any rpm. This is a real improvement, and I'm not just saying that. Other news is the cat's out of the bag on how bad my landings really are, at least with a passenger and full fuel. Fifty witnesses at least. Nobody saw the squeaker on this end, however... Mark Langford, Harvest, AL see homebuilt airplane at http://www.N56ML.com email to N56ML "at" hiwaay.net
