2008-10-12 Thread Colin & Bev Rainey
Regretfully we will not make Oshkosh this year. We are thrashing to get the
Corvair motor in the plane and tested for the Gathering. Almost all new parts
are here, awaiting just a few more. Bought glass and some other support stuff
for modifications. New job to hopefully give me more time for flying starts
this week. Hoping by the end of June motor will be built and in the plane to
resume testing.

Just a thought, but has anyone ever used PVC pipe for an intake manifold? Bill
Clapp's fuel tanks got me thinking. Just wondering...
Anyone with real info on this send me email offline please.

Hi Colin
PVC pipe softens and starts to melt in the 350degree F range. It also
becomes brittle in subzero temps. I'm sure someone, some were has tried to
use it, but I doubt if it was very successful. Of course, You may have
better results. Good Luck!

Hope many days to Oshkosh? I plan to be there the entire week. I will be
helping William Wynne out but may be at the flightline more than anything with
the other KRs. If you need to get a hold of me there I will also be helping
at the ZENAIR booth and possibly inside one of the hangers where the MAF
(Mission Aviation Fellowship) booth is. My dad will be maning the MAF booth
part of the time. It looks like a fun time.

Bill,
There is only one scheduled KR event during the entire week of Oshkosh and that
is the KR Forum which will be Monday July 25th presented by Mark Langford from
1:00m - 2:15 at forum building #10. It is sad that there are no more activities
for the KR group but they just seem to never materialize. Two years ago
Jeannette Rand catered a KR lunch which was excellent. We also had a get
together in the camping area for beer and brats for the KR and Vair guys a
couple years ago. Also it does not look like the group fly in to Oshkosh will
happen. It would be nice to get more organized for better presentations of the
KR at Oshkosh.

As Sid Wood mentioned, the KR Forum will be Monday the 29th at 8:30 in
Pavilion 4. I'll be the first to admit...that's awfully early! We usually
have it at 1:00 or so, and I got tired of the airshow jets drowning us out,
so I tried to move it up a bit. I got way more than I bargained for, and
will try to move it back to later next year. As usual, I have no real plan
or presentation, but something that's worked great before is to get some
pilots up on stage to answer questions, rather than hearing my same old
slant on things. Larry Flesner will be there for sure (I'm flying in with
him), and I assume Jones will be there, but I'll be asking some builders and
pilots to come up and join us on stage to field questions, or at least field
them from the peanut gallery. One thing I always try to do it point the
folks who've shown up out of curiosity to the KRnet website, and give them a
few minutes of generally positive information regarding the KR airplanes and
the willingness of the community to help others get their planes in the air.

See you there!

I'm heading off tomorrow at noon for a quick trip to San Francisco but
wanted to update you on Oshkosh. I'll be flying in on either Sunday
(preferable) or Monday and all KR's that aren't camping should try to
park in the automotive engine area. I am working on updating the
presentation for Forum, with Mark's help, and have some pretty exciting
video I will be using for talking through the landing presentation. This
last Sunday, I took a friend who is in the video business (like Video
Bob) and he went for a 1st flight in my KR to the Cape Girardeau
airshow. The entire purpose was to get a video that showed what it was
like in the phases of landing a KR. We just finished editing the video
and it exceeds my expectations. For those that have never flown in a KR,
this is as real as it gets. We did a really good landing and then on the
way back, I let him know we were going to do a botched approach that we
would have to correct for. This required a good slip and a bit of a
bounce that was all captured out of the canopy. Pretty good friend to do
this with me! Anyway besides the landing sequences, you will also see
the KR up close and personal with an F-18, F16 and a Blackhawk
helicopter on the ground. They also gave me permission to make
closed traffic, a low approach and an abrupt vertical move to leave the
area which is also on tape. This video will be shown at our talk at
Oshkosh. By the way, I got to see several KR people which was why I went
in the first place. Thanks for the hospitality Mike and Larry. For those
that aren't going, you will have to wait. My friend, also named Bob, has

landings and then encode it for delivery on the Web. Hopefully by late
August.

Owen and I are still planning for a Sunday arrival . Now that we have
some friends taking some campgear , we can probably park in the
homebuilt show plane area , at least.

Will try for the autoengine conversion area if possible .

See you at OSH

BTW: When is the beer and brats night , Dana ?

We are all going to be at the Weds. KR forum so that is going to be the spot
where we leave from. Since Oshkosh is so large, it would be difficult to
carry grills, coolers and so on into the site so we are going to leave the
KR forum tent and go to my campsite in Camp Scholler. Since I don't know
exactly where that will be, we will just play "follow the leader, follow the
dumba$$, follow the wandering one" whatever you want to call me. We'll
grill out, drink a "soda" or two and swap lies.

Thanks, Dana. I 'm good at following . It's leading that gets tough !

We will also be camping in Camp Scholler somewhere. I received
permission today from EAA to park in the Auto engine area ( if the mail
cards arrive in time) . This should put a few KR's together at least.

Cheers

My friend, also named Bob, has
volunteered, once I'm back, to finish the edit with my narration of the
landings and then encode it for delivery on the Web. Hopefully by late
August.

Take care and I hope to see everyone at Oshkosh.

2008-10-12 Thread Jim Faughn
I am getting ready to get ready to head out to Oshkosh. I'm wondering
what kind of computer modeling the weather forecasters have. On
Acuweather they are predicting 36 mph wind gusts on Sunday and on
Weather Channel dot com they are predicting 5 mph. I guess I'll just
have to wait a couple of days. Anyway, I just watched the video of the
landing we prepared on a projection screen and I have to say, for me,
it's like being in the cockpit.

Also, I talked to Linda Bennett and she said the rooms need to be
reserved for the KR Gathering by September 1st or they loose the lock on
the rooms. She has updated the web site at http://www.krgathering.org/.

I haven't see a lot of talk about the next KR Gathering but I have
talked to Larry Flesner and he will have a possibility with regards to
Mt. Vernon, IL. Larry, I'm speaking out of turn here and you will want
to chime in, but I think Larry would be an EXCELLENT host. He's been to
all the most recent Gatherings and he is committed to the KR. So, my
nomination, that may mean very little, is Larry's place. But if someone
else wants to host the Gathering, they should come prepared to make an
excellent case.

Take care and I hope to see you at Oshkosh or the KR Gathering.

Got back last evening from one of the best Oshkosh shows I've seen. Ended
up seeing three KRs, Jims, Chris and Owens. All three survived the little
weather blast we had during the KR forum and the one later that
night..although Chris was a little worse for wear after the Weds.
night one. Had a great time gathering at John Moyers RV (camper that is)
for the Mark Jones supplied Beer & Brats. Had great intoxicating
conversation...or was that great conversation while
intoxicated..can't remember. Seriously, I had a great time seeing the
KR crowd although there seemed to be a lot of conversation about clothing
this year. I guess you had to be there to understand that one:-)

Landford & I got there late Tuesday night after stopping at Mark Jones's
house. Mark has got to have the most comforable KRs I have ever sat in.
His added length is a true benefit. It was a blast sitting in his KR and
starting up that Corvair, sounded and felt great.

Best wishes to all and I hope to see you again later this yearnow time
to go to the shop and play with all the neat toys I bought.

The last 8 trips to Oshkosh were planed the day before
I left.My last trip I called a friend Thursday am an
said lets go now. We stayed Friday and Sat. and flew
back to Dallas on Sunday. When you arrive there are
bulletin boards around with phone # of places to stay.
They also can help you at the sigh in desk or bring a
sleeping bag and tent. They have very good showers and
things on the field. One important thing to bring is
MONEY. Before you arrive get notoms Fly to Ripon keep
you mouth closed listen and follow directions. It is
not that hard.

The only reason I can see for staying at a hotel instead of camping at
Oshkosh, the gathering, or Sun and Fun is if you have to take your wife to
be allowed to go and she refuses to camp.

Of course if that is your reason you need to reconsider your priorities.
After all, you build a KR to keep forever.

They have plenty of room to camp out.If you really want to enjoy

I am based at Waukesha, WI (KUES). We have a mini KR Gathering, cook out,
and all fly to Oshkosh as a group. However, this year, I am in the process
of moving and have to vacate my home here by July 13th. I am moving to
Stevens Point, WI (KSTE). Right now, I am not sure if my KR Mini Gathering
will be at Waukesha or Stevens Point. Either way, I will have the Mini
Gathering. If we still do it at Waukesha, those that arrive on Saturday,
including myself, can sleep in the hangar or you can camp out by the hangar
or get a hotel room. Personally, it is a very nice hangar and I will sleep
there on an air mattress. If we have it at Stevens Point, I have a T-hangar
there and hopefully will be in my new home by Airventure. So stay tuned for
more details to follow.

The KR Gathering is in Mount Vernon, Illinois (KMVN). Here is all the info:

Dave,

I know of five KRSuper2 builders that will be at Oshkosh. I think all are
planning on using the Corvair. They are myself, Chris Anderson, Paul
Fincato,
David McCauley and Ted Sanders. Scott Watts can not make it this year, but
passed these names on to me. Let us meet at the KR Forum on Monday and
compare notes afterward. Bring Pictures of your progress!!

Are there any other KRSuper2 builders going to Oshkosh? Anyone else
interested in talking with us?

I am planning on taking lots of pictures of engine installations.

I was at Corvair college #13, it was a blast. Mark from Falcon was there and
was a great hands on help. I got my case closed up and have since installed
my Dan 5th bearing.

See you soon,

Lee,

It is really too bad that you feel the need to get on a public forum and bitch
about such a great aviation event. After reading your rant I can't help but
quote the old saying, "If you can't say something nice or constructive do the
rest of us a favor and just keep quiet!".

I am very new to the homebuilding community and this was my first trip to
Oshkosh. I was in awe. I loved it... everything about it. I am so glad that
EAA puts on an event that is all encompassing to the small aviation market.
There would be so much missing if there were limits as you suggest. I can only
guess that you would prefer to not have any military aircraft there also.

So now that you have decided to never go back to AV, perhaps you can do the
rest of us a favor and keep the reasons to yourself too.

If you didn't like what Lee had to say, why did you re-post the whole
thing?

I didn't understand some of Lee's post but I got the general idea and I'm
in complete agreement that EAA as an organization are the greediest bunch
of b I've ever come across since I left Africa. They'd charge
for the air you breathe there if they could. After my last Oshkosh
experience I too have not re-newed my membership and never intend to
unless I someday decide to attend Oshkosh again and have to to get in the
gate. It is a great show.

As for T-shirts. If you go into town and hit the Wal-Mart, you'll find
some very nice ones, (with pockets even!) for ten bucks. I'm not
kidding. They have some great graphics on the back and on the pocket it
says "Oshkosh Fly-In with the year. I bought six or seven of them and
gave them away as gifts when I got home. I wouldn't be surprised if EAA
hasn't pressured Wal-Mart to stop selling them since it cuts into EAA's
profits, but hopefully Wal-Mart told 'em to f*** off. Those were my last
words to EAA when I left.

Lee's post has been mulling in my mind for the last two day and I'm
not sure I can
give an adequate response but here goes.

The KR community operates on the financial fringe of the sport
aviation spectrum.
It would be nice if we all had the time and money to attend the worlds largest
aviation event and spend the entire week. Unfortunately most of us
have neither
the time or money to do so. Oshkosh has grown to the size it is
because it meets
the needs / wishes of hundreds of thousands of people world wide. Even if you
think it has outgrown what we wish it to be, you have to admit that a
great deal
of the advancement in sport aviation that we enjoy today came out of Oshkosh.
I've not attended for at least twenty years now but the fact is that
it draws people
, aircraft, and vendors that you will see nowhere else. Many companies and
vendors schedules revolve around Oshkosh. It can't be everything to everyone.

As for the KR Gathering, this will be my twentieth consecutive year
to attend and
acting as host since 2004. I think everyone will admit that we enjoyed Lee's
participation when he was able to attend. To say it is strictly a
social event not
only misses the bulls eye but misses the entire target. The social aspect is
certainly a huge part of the Gathering as many of us get to see each other only
once a year and it gives us a chance to catch up on relationships
that were born
at previous Gatherings.

To make my point, I think Lee is forgetting the many hours spent on
the flight line
with KR's opened for inspection, picture taking, questions answered
by the builders,
and assisting fliers with problems that developed far from
home. Then there are
the hours spent by builders pouring over photo albums and getting ideas for
there project back home, exchanging and selling parts and projects, and the
several forums held to answer builders question. Stick time is given
to the lucky
few that can get it prior to making the first flight of their own
project or in some
cases rides given to wives and girlfriends of builders to help
"grease the skids"
of their project back home. Last but not least is the motivation
factor the Gathering
injects directly into the blood stream of builders as they see the KR's making
high speed passes round and round the pattern.

And if that were not enough, there is still the social
aspect. Setting around the
campfire in the evening enjoying the "root beer", the talk is still
more KR's !!

I am a bit puzzled by Lee's comment "I would have a good time flying to a CX4
group deal if BOB G would be there". That sounds to me like he would attend
strictly for the social aspect of the event. Why then condemn Airventure and
the Gathering for being strictly "social events"?

I hope Lee's comments were strictly the result of a bad weather day when he
couldn't fly his KR and that we see him at future Gathering.

Have a good day...

I have never been to Oshkosh but I do intend to go some day/year. I have been
to Sun-N-Fun several times and will continue to go, maybe not every year but I
will return because aviation, to me, is much more than just a KR. 2009 will be
my 10th year coming to the KR gathering. My KR is not y et flying and I have to
say I learn something new each time I go to the gathering. The first few years
was to learn about KR but now it is more people and the friends I have made
over the years that continues to draw me to the gathering. The KR is a
wonderful airplane but the people who build and fly the KR are great people and
fun to be around.

As I said before, I'm new to all this and I am so excited that I have the
opportunity to build an aircraft and get a Light Sport ticket. I am not trying
to rankle any feathers of all of you that have been doing this and involved
with homebuilding and EAA for many years. I have a great respect for you and
have so much to learn from you. I have learned so much from Mark Langford's
web site and so many others.

Just think about this... If it weren't for EAA, homebuilders would have no
unified voice with government and no representation with the FAA. Would there
even be a Sport Pilot category if it weren't for EAA? And all of the
workshops, seminars and on-line resources that EAA has. I was very surprised
to discover how big EAA is. Because of its size there are benefits and
drawbacks. I'm sure that "things aren't the way they used to be". Well, times
change. Get over it. In my humble opinion EAA is a very wonderful
organization that I am proud to support. There is so much good being done for
so many aspects of aviation. If you are not happy with the direction the
organization is taking why not try to use your experience and influence to make
a positive change instead of complaining and quitting? Just don't expect to
get your own way all the time.

Just my "new-guy" perspective.

2009-08-01 Thread hart...@charter.net
My five digit membership number attests to the fact that I have been an EAA
member since about 1974. Do I like everything about itNo! Am I happy to
be a member..Yes! I really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere of "Oshkosh"
during the early years, but still heard some complain that "It's not like
Rockford!" Times change and the EAA must keep up. The money that EAA makes
off of "Oshkosh" keeps the organization afloat for the whole year and supports
many programs: such as Young Eagles, EAA Air Academy and KidVenture. It also
funds lobbying and the infrastructure, such as the Museum and grounds that many
of us actually enjoy. It also draws customers to local businesses and chains
like WalMart. Many of whom will tell you they could not exist without the
influx of customers during AirVenture. No EAA exec is drawing a multi-million
dollar paycheck or receiving even more as a golden parachute when retiring.
The money goes back into the organization. If you want a peek at the balance
sheet, I am sure EAA would share that information. It is a non-profit
organization.
Is AirVenture for everyone? ...No! Some would rather be in their
workshop "gettin' er done" or poking holes in clouds than shooting the bull at
the hangar or at an EAA Chapter meeting. Some would rather get as much as they
can for as little as possible from the EAA...and...some would rather give back
by volunteering at Oshkosh, their local EAA Chapter or Mount Vernon. Thank you
Larry F, Mark L, Bob L and all the others who make the KRnet, and KR Gathering
a possibility.
Volunteeringthat's what makes these events possible. I am one of the
selfish ones who volunteers at all of these. Selfish because it gives me a
great feeling that I am contributing to something constructive and it also
gives me a sense of ownership in something that is giving back to me. Those
hundreds of people you see working at AirVenture selling tickets, working
security, directing traffic, clerking at the Wearhouse, working the flightline
or the camping locator booth are volunteers and most are also paying for their
own ticket and camping. Try volunteering! You may be surprised at how much
more you will enjoy and take ownership of an event.or maybe not.
I am thankful each day that we live in a country where WalMart and local
businesses can make a buck selling a shirt, but I am even more thankful for
organizations like EAA (and another 3 letter organization) who cut through the
government red tape, stand up against the opposition and make it possible for
me to enjoy my favorite pastimes. There is no way that one person or
unorganized people can accomplish what EAA and AOPA do in dealing with
government. Without dedicated people who work within flying organizations we
might all spend our time looking to the sky and dreaming about being able to
afford a $300,000+ Cirrus, Bonanza or Mooney instead of flying our own
creations.
So, I guess I will be willing to pay a few bucks extra for a shirt with
the copyrighted name "AirVenture" even though I would prefer it say "Oshkosh"
and I'll probably volunteer next year at Oshkosh and when someone is angry at
EAA and tells me to off! as they leave I'll smile and think, "Isn't this
a great country where we can say as we please and not end up in jail.
I hope Snakebite makes it to 2009 Gathering. We need those fine examples
of planes and knowledgeable builders like Lee V to make this fun and
informative event a success!
Constructive criticism isweller.constructive. Sure would be
nice to see more of that. End of rant! See you at MVN!

I’ll be arriving on a Greyhound this year, a bit of a step down from last
year’s flight, but if I can walk away from it we’ll consider it a win.

I’d like to meet up with KR folks at OSH since I won’t be able make the
gathering.

I won’t get in until Monday afternoon, so I’ll miss the KR Builders and Pilots
Forum put on by Mark. However, Cedric should be there.

Maybe we can plan an OSH KR Lunch or Dinner gathering?

Cheers!

Being of sound mind and body, and hoping to stay that way, Mark Langford
and I bailed out of our flight to Oshkosh.  35 mph headwinds, low
ceilings, and gusty ground winds were enough to cause us to reconsider
an "optional flight".  I might still make the trip on Thursday with
another ride but that's "up in the air so to speak" at this point.   Rob
Schmidt will do the KR forum on Monday so plan to attend.  Mother Nature
just had other plans this year. Bummer...

Getting there a day or two before it officially opens and watching the
planes come in is the best part of Oshkosh. It's also possible to get
last minute camping in prime locations by getting there early. Some
people don't show up for their reserved spaces plus there's always a few
that have been "overlooked" in booking campsites and are available,
especially if you brought something small - tent or very small trailer..

Besides these tips, take a folding bike.

My 2 cents for those going next year or thereafter.

I plan to fly mine to OSH, but don't plan on staying but a day or two (and
all of this is contingent on the weather). Be prepared, because my plane is

The KR forum is on the first day, so I'll be there that day for sure.

Hi all. Hope we get a BUNCH of KR's at Oshkosh.
I will be there helping to move any & all of you around the airport.
I'm a co-chairman in the "Welcome Wagons"
We drive around in cut-down vans with seats in the back and it's our job
to pick you all up right at your plane, transport you and your luggage
to registration, the campground, bus pickup point etc. or anywhere on
the field that you want to go. Also, we will pick you up when you are
ready to leave and transport you directly to your plane again.

There are three vans operating and we can be hailed by having any of the
guys on the green carts who park you call us on the radio or simply
waving at us when we drive around.

This is a service that some folks have not heard of yet, but proves to
be very popular once they do.

Oshkosh is a big place and we can sure save you a LOT of walking.

We operate from 8am until 8pm each day, so please avail yourself to our
services.

Hoping to see many of you in Oshkosh 05.

KR> Oshkosh 2007

2008-10-12 Thread Kenneth B. Jones
Jim,

I just want to go on record supporting your goal. If possible, I will fly
my KR-2 to Oshkosh 2007. Last year I completed my 40 hour flight test just
in time to make The Gathering. This year I made Sun 'n Fun, Oshkosh, MERFI,
and The Gathering.

The best way to assure you will fly your KR to Oshkosh in 2007 is to make a
commitment now. I'm aware of at least 4 KR's that were flown to The
Gathering this year after having last minute problems. They did this
through extra effort because they had commited to be there. I know that
sometimes you have problems that you can't overcome, but if you have made a
commitment, at least you will try.

BTW, last year I had to stop for fuel going to and coming from The
Gathering. This year neither direction. This is due airframe drag
reduction. So far, about 14% improvement, but not enough to offset fuel
cost increases. :-)

The one thing that I am personally promoting,
beyond continuing to attend KR Gatherings, is the 35th Anniversary of
the KR. This will be an Oshkosh EVENT and I will be flying there in
2007. I believe we should be able to get at least 35 KR's at the 35th
Anniversary of the KR. This has to be a passion and commitment of
everyone and it has now become my slogan.

Plan on attending the KR Gathering next year and then Oshkosh in 2007.

FINISH YOUR AIRPLANES AND BE AT OSHKOSH 2007

For those flying into Oshkosh, this thread has some very interesting
reading. Rick AvWeb article is direct and to the point.

KR> Oshkosh Reading

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Langford
That was an excellent article on AvWeb. This year was my first landing at
SNF, and I knew the NOTAM like the back of my hand. I ended up in a holding
pattern around the Lake because the B-2 was doing a flyby or something, and
I seemed to be the only one at the proper speed, altitude, or following
directions to "stay directly above the shoreline". One guy in an RV came
busting through the circular pattern headed straight for the runway, nowhere
near where he should have been, and going way too fast. The controllers
were way too easy on him, but gently told him to get in line with the rest
of us. The whole thing wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be, but
I'll bet when the controller says "white low-wing...rock your wings" there
were 5 planes rocking back and forth, and of course when he then says "good,
I've got you" 5 different guys think he's talking to them. That was
disconcerting. I knew my place though, as he kept calling me "yellow
Glasair"...

Mark,

I'm not sure what this says about your plane, but they called me a Glassair
at KOSH last year. :-)
