I never had a Tech Counselor...he showed up once early on and confessed
that his specialty was aluminum aircraft, my workmanship looked fine,
and that I should forge on without him. The FAA did away with any kind
of inspection (other than the final airworthiness inspection) many years
ago. It should be noted, however, that three TC inspections are a bonus
when it comes to getting insurance, but I was still able to get
insurance, even with only a few hours of tailwheel training, and a
hundred hours of flight time.

I am sure I'm not the only one to have built a KR without a Tech
Counselor, and in fact am probably in the majority. With resources like
the Internet, KRnet, and all the other experimental aircraft related
forums, videos, and websites, I see no reason why any reasonably capable
person cannot build and fly a KR without issue.

I'm sure you've had other obstacles in your way, but I don't think you
can blame the lack of EAA support. I gave up on my EAA chapter many
years ago, and some will argue that I should have helped to improve it,
rather than bailing. But I chose my battle, and opted to help the
Experimental world directly through KRnet. Apparently it's not been enough.

I'm sorry it didn't work out for you. It's always a shame to see dreams
evaporate, along with the time and money invested.

KR> Project for sale

2016-11-06 Thread Phillip Hill
I've been sitting here for an hour, starting, erasing, restarting, editing,
trying to figure out how to say what I need to say, so I'll just say it I
guess. After a couple of years of trying to complete this project, I have
run into so serious snags. Pardon me as I get long winded. First off, I
purchased an abandoned project that was quite far along that had one major
flaw and that was the glass parts of the structure was wavy and uneven. It
didn't matter to me, I have lots of fiberglass experience on boats and
hovercraft. I made this decision after many months of checking the project
over against the plans etc. Ok so I cut all the glass off, fixed a couple
little things and began making the other decisions necessary to move
forward, like center stick or dual stick, seat position, flaps of no flaps.
In the mean time I began contacting EAA Tech counselors to get official
guidance on my project. I decided to keep the project stock with original
retract gear and re-engineer the gear lock mechanism as everyone else has
done. Then my Dad became ill and I spent most of my time caring for this
great WWII Navy Vet and stopped working on the plane. A year later Dad
passed away and I took some time off to rest up and help my mom.

Lack of a Tech Counselor is one of the major problems I have. I initially
contacted the EAA and got a list, three in my area. I contacted everyone on
the list. One had moved and not updated the EAA so he was out. One had
moved farther away than he was comfortable travelling. One didn't give me
the time of day. I went to the local EAA chapter and they didn't have
anyone at the time but gave me the name of a guy who was going to be their
designated Tech Counselor (TC). I contacted him, talked to him face to face
at the meeting and set up an appointment. He had t drive through my town on
the way back from work so it was perfect. Well, he was a no show. I called
him several times and got no answer, left messages etc. Nothing. Ok, so
now what. I continued down the path I had started so as not to be just
sitting around. I knew where I was going and until some told me otherwise I
was just going to continue but I couldn't get too far ahead of myself.

So I finally made phone contact with the original guy from the EAA list
that didn't give me the time of day. He was about to go to Europe for a
month and we set a time to make contact again after her returned. He asked
me for my contact details etc. I was excited to get this underway. Well,
the allotted time came and went, no contact. Sent the guy several emails
(his preferred method of contact), and left him a couple voice mails and
got no return.

I kept on working, I got an experienced KR builder to stop by and take a
look. He gave me a few pointers, and suggested a few things, which I did. I
heard a fellow KR builder had enlisted the original guy I had arrangement
with as his adviser, so I made contact with him again. I told him about the
project again and he said he had a few other things to do and he would call
me right back. The call never came. So now, I'm really ticked off. I get
the fact these guys are volunteers but wow. I decided I was going to have
to be the worlds biggest pest and push the issue then I thought, do I
really want someone inspecting my project and giving me advice whose heart
is not in it. Not a chance. If I was the TC and I had a guy hounding me,
would I have a good attitude about it? Would I be able to look at his
project objectively? Probably not.

Now the WAF (wife approval factor) is at an all time low. She has asked me
to give up my dream. She wants me to concentrate on my artistic skills
etc. I can't afford to buy a plane, I can't afford the high annual
expenses etc. My only option was to use my engineering, intuition and
skills and build something that I could use to stay flying. I'm in great
health, take no meds for anything, and it would be a shame to waste a
perfectly good FAA Medical. But alas, it must not have been meant to be.

So, for a reasonable period of time, my project is for sale. I have a
conventional, retractable gear, slightly widened (2"-3") KR-2 torn down,
back to boat stage with 2 sets of wings. One set built with Deihl wing
skins with 10gal fuel tanks in each wing. The other set was built to plans.
I have VW engine engine mount and a few other odds and ends. Gear just
needs to be re-attached etc and its rolling or convert it to fixed gear.
Also have forward deck with fuel tank built-in per plans. Pictures upon
request (Off List Please). Second set of wings (Deihl skinned) for sale
separately from the KR-2.

Anyway, this is not the way I wanted to go. I have engineered and air
tested several innovations I thought would enhance the KR but now that will
be lost. Sad to have to let this go. It's all I've wanted to do since I was
in high school. Oh well.

I apologize for the long winded post. I needed to vent a little.

KR> KR Project for sale/trade

2016-08-08 Thread Pete and Karen Gauthier
I have a KR 2 Project that I started in the early 80's That I need to get
out of my shop. It has a been widened 4" lengthened one Bay (I think 11"), has
spar location altered for AS504x (6 as I recall) and a dragonfly Canopy These
mods were made before the KR2S eas released (not the airfoil mod of course).
There are thing I'd like to change but am moving on to other projects. I also
have a relatively stock KR2 Canopy and frame that I removed from my other KR 2
when I replaced the canopy with an RV12 canopy (long story). These items are in
Woodburn, OR and the price will be very right to someone that would like a
headstart on a project. Contact me off line if you are interested or you know
someone that be.

I do appreciate the replies. just to be clear what I'm after, I am ONLY
interested in a KR1 single place, original style, less than 50% built. I know a
lot of discussion takes place here and its easy to forget who is into what, but
I have been talking about replicating Ken's original KR1 all along, except for
some sensible improvements to enhance reliability/safety. And it will be
tri-geared. To that goal, I have purchased a set of new KR1 plans.
If I can find a stock KR1 boat stage that would fantastic and they do

My question was what to look for in terms of construction detail that may
indicate a poor build, especially indications that the woodwork cannot be used.

KR> what to look for when inspecting/buying a KR project

2016-05-15 Thread Lawrence Bell
Gary,
You may be confused about the 50%. It is well explained in Kit Planes
magazine. The 50% applies to the build of the airplane. If you take over a
project that is over 50% amateur built by anyone it qualifies, the builder
doesn't have to be you. If you want a repair certificate for working on the
airplane you have to be listed as the builder when it is certified. They
explained a case where someone took over a project that had already
received an N number with another builder listed as the main builder. Even
though the buyer who took over the project did more than 50% he could not
get a repair certificate but he could get amateur built status on the
airplane. I just think you might be looking at the wrong criteria for your
objective.

Thanks to Mark on the article I will check it out tonight. maybe that will

Take a look at the September 1996 issue of "KRonline", at
http://www.krnet.org/kronline/. Jeff Scott wrote an article on that.

See http://www.krnet.org/kronline/ .

I would add that if you buy a flying airplane, that you show up with a
trailer to carry it home, because your very first KR flight, a "new"
airplane, and the pressure of getting back home is not a good survival
plan, as those FAA accident reports make clear.

I also I'm using capacitance probes from Centroid. I have 40" long probes that
bend 85 deg just after the sensor head. They were built to be able to bend
there. I had to make a bending tool to make a tight radius. They mount thru the
top of the tank and slip into a piece of I/2" slotted pvc pipe supported by
bracket mounted inside my alum 12 gallon wing tanks. The pvc pipe prevents the
probe from touching any part of the tank. Some of the fuel monitor gages, such
as the "glass panels" ie. Dynon, MGL, etc have the ability to preset
capacitance values to certain tank levels setting up a curve to approximate
actual tank levels. I had my probes built with low level alarms that hopefully
will prevent the possibility of running out of fuel.

I purchased a gas cap that is also a float type fuel Guage. The fuel quantity
indicator is displayed on the top of the cap. I look out the window onto the
wing to see how much fuel that I have left.?

I also use time and fuel burn.?

I read somewhere, quite a while ago, that there were no fuel gauges in
fighter planes until 1948. They flew by fuel burn and time.

I don't know why you wouldn't want to have the probes in your tank. There is
no electrical load on the probes nor current passing through the solution
per se. The active part of the sensor is outside of the solution being
measured. It is probably safer and more reliable than any "float" type of
sensor and can be readily calibrated for each element of the probe for
extremely accurate measurements. While I don't have them in a fuel tank, I
have used this type of probe in many other applications including
electroplating, rinsing, sensing, etc. etc. etc..

Robert,

The only possibility I can envision is to have a stand pipe inside the
cockpit , connected to the tank , where the level of fuel in the standpipe
follows the level in the wing. In that case, why not just use a site gauge.
I have 7 foot long probes in my wing tanks running from root to tip of the
outer wing panel. Because the tank thickness changes from root to tip, they
are not linear. For wing tanks where the wing has dihedral there is no
perfect system, floats or otherwise. Know what fuel you start with, know
your fuel burn, and watch the clock.

KR> project update

2015-01-16 Thread Robert Pesak
Hi everyone,
I'm trying to get things finished up in my garage because once I get it to the
hanger it will be much harder. One of the things that's been bugging me for the
longest is how to use capacitance probes for my wing tanks without placing them
in the tanks. I thought of a sight gauge type of system by placing the sending
units in metal tubes and placing them in front of the spar. Then the only thing
I need to do is drill for a 1/8" fitting at the bottom of the tank next to the
fuel outlet. See pics on my Photobucket

KR> Bob Lee & KR project for sell

2014-04-06 Thread Bob Lee
Hello -

My name is Cheryl Lee and I am writing on behalf on my husband Bob Lee. He
is a fellow aircraft builder and is part of these mailing lists. Some of
you have met him over the years at the KR Gatherings and he has handled the
KR Gathering webiste up until this year. Late last fall Bob began not
feeling to well. He had open heart surgery 2 years ago and thought
something might be up with his heart. So he started seeing his
cardiologist. He thought he was feeling some better but I didn't really see
much improvement. In March I had to take him to the hospital and he was
found to be anemic and dehydrated. They found out he had some ulcers that
were bleeding in his stomach that was causing him to be anemic. While
finding that out they saw something suspicious on his pancreas and liver.
They brought in an oncologist and did a liver bioposy as they suspected
cancer. They got his stable and sent us home and we were to get the results
of the bioposy a week later. We never even suspected cancer. The day
before we were to get the results from the liver bioposy Bob had a huge
stroke in the left frontal lobe. This affected his memory, communication
skills and processing skills. For 5 to 6 days he did not know who he was or
any of his family. Then finally he started to recognize me and our 3
children. He has finally started to recognize other immediate family and a
very few friends. He spent two weeks in the hospital trying to get his
blood stabilized and start therapy. About 2 weeks ago we moved his to a
rehab center to continue with PT, OT, and speech therapy. The communication
going in still gets messed up. Sometimes he understands and others times he
doesn't. He knows enough to tell you he doesn't understand you or know you.
His speech going out has gotten better but he doesn't always express himself
correctly. The memory has a long way to go. He doesn't read or write much
as some of this has affect his vision as well. His balance and walking has
greatly improved and he doesn't need a walker or cane. Late in the day he
needs assistance as he gets tired. Hopefully he will be coming home this
upcoming week and we will have in home therapy to continue his progress. I
will be here with him and working with him as well as he can not drive. We
have to master things like stairs in our house, taking care of his hygiene
and even the simple things of putting clothes on correctly. He has come a
long way and is doing better each day. He is heading in the right
direction. We are working toward his recovery from the stroke and in the
next two weeks will be getting a second opinion on cancer treatment. They
have a Cancer Care Center in Newnan (an houraway from us) that we will be
going to if they will take him. I am not sure due to the stroke if he
remembers the possibility of having cancer.

In my work, I am a contractor. I have no insurance. All our insurance is
up under Bob right now. He will not be going back to work as a bus driver
this fall and therfore his benefits will expire. I am looking to go back to
work then so we will get benefits under me. Right now my main concern is to
help him recover as much as possible from the stroke and start some cancer
treatments. When all this came down my children and I were devasted. But
since then we have pulled together and become strong for Bob with the help
of our family, friends, and neighbors. The high school that our youngest
son attends is dedicating a baseball game to him come next Friday night,
April 11. They are taking donations on our behalf. Please visit the site
of www.eteamz.com/lambertbaseball. The medical bills are coming in and with
our wonderful Obamacare, we have our fair share to pay. Please donate to
our cause so that I can stay home and take care of Bob to help him more
forward in his recovery. Any and all donations will be greatly appreciated
no matter the amount.

I do not think that Bob will ever finish his airplane much less fly it. I
need to sell it as that will help with our medical expenses and mortgage
payments as well. He has alot of information and pictures of his project on
his website of www.flyboybob.com. Please go out and view it and pass it
along to anyone who would be interested in buying his project. He has the
body with retractable landing gear, Steve Bennett motor, Dan Diehl wing
skins, and a nice insturment panel. I will have to look for the plans. I
even have some tools that can be purchased as well if a buyer needs them to
help finish the plane. I do not have a price yet as I need to talk with a
few builders to find out what a fair price would be. We live Suwanee
Georgia and will be glad to have anyone comelook at the project. Please
feel free to respond to this email or you may contact me via my personal
email of shortbus1017 at gmail.com or my cell number is 404-538-1434. I will
be responding to all interested as Bob doesn't understand how to use a cell
phone or his computer right

Ok guys, the first one to jump on this one is going to get one heck of a deal.
A friend has decided that age is catching up so he is selling his KR2 project.
The fuselage is in boat stage, the tail looks pretty much done, elevator and
rudder controls done landing gear, wheels and tires installed, I think he has a
fiberglass seat, spars are done, the top of both outer wings have foam
installed and sanded you just need to install the foam on the under side, he
will also throw in a few miscellaneous things like a roll of fiberglass and I'm
not sure what else. His craftsmanship on this is super. He appears to have done
things right. If you are looking for a really good project then this one will
give you a great head start. A lot has been done. He is only asking $1,700.00.

Wow, I just saw this post. Yep, Sam Sayer top shelf designer, builder/invented,
a lot of other qualities, but most of all wonderful person. He let my wife and
I stay at his place for Sun-n-fun back in about 2003 or so when my previously
arranged place fell through. I am sure our Lord is taking good care of him.

My 2 cents.

Seeing the photo of Robert's prop reminded me of a tip I may have
posted in the past but it bares repeating. It is a good idea when
ordering a prop to have the maker put a flat black paint finish on
the back side of the blades to cut down glare. My landing lights are
inboard of the prop arc and the first time I taxied it after dark all
I could see was a 60 inch diameter wood colored arc in front of
me. I even got some glare when flying with my back to the sun on a
day with no cloud cover.

2009-05-19 Thread Jim Freiberger
Hello KR fans, My name is James Freiberger and am the son of the late Ron
Freiberger who I think many of you may know. My father sold his KR project
years ago on ebay, and my siblings and I have no idea who the purchaser was. I
would like to inquire as to weather any one here on the KR-net knows the
whereabouts of his project and who owns it now. Im hoping that the purchaser
followed my dads advise and looked to the great people here for advise. I know
my dad thought alot of the people he got to know through this forum and it
really helped ease the loss of his flying certificate to help others out with
technical questions, it was his was to stay involved in aviation, and meant
more than most will ever know, for that I thank you all.
If anyone knows where his project may be Id sure appreciate it to hear from you.
Cheers

Jeff,
I made my turtle deck very similar to yours. I made a framework by cutting
four squares of 1/4'' ply all the same size. I marked out the turtledeck
shape at each of the four stations and then cut out the shapes. I then built
up a framework from a few 2x4 bits of scrap pine that positioned the four
plies at the correct distances from each other. Into this I forced a sheet
of the thinnest galvanized sheet I could find and fastened it in place. Into
this I laid up two layers of 200g BID.
while this was getting tacky I took a sheet of 3/8 foam and ripped it into
20mm strips. I then took these strips and laid them up onto the previously
laid glass using micro slurry as adhesive. It looks just like a classic
yacht hull when finished. After this had cured, I sanded the inside smooth
and laid up one layer of 200g BID (after vacuuming up all the dust). After
this had cured for two days I removed it from the jig/mould, trimmed it and
fit it to the fuselage. I havn't weighed it but it is extremely light and I
am sure that I could stand on top of it without it breaking. A bonus was the
outside surface is perfectly smooth and shiny so no sanding.

KR> project status

2008-10-12 Thread wilder_jeff Wilder

well all, I think I have a winner! I've attempted to make a turtle deck,
this is now the 3 attempt.

I dont feel the need to go into detail as to why the first 2 failed, lets
just say that polyester resins melts monokote. Over a male mold... it looks
great, after the piece is pulled... Um... well its not good. It takes too
much cloth and resin to make a free standing peiece, that doesnt weigh 18
lbs.

What I ended up doing was this:

I built a female mold, much like Mark L's first attempt. Mark said that he
really could have used a vacuum pump to pull it up close. I didnt have a
pump either, so what I ended up with was

I built this female mold, I went to home depot and purchased a 4x8 sheet of
3/4 foam. I set my blade on the table saw to about 30 degrees. So to
minimize the gaps as it curves around the shape of the mold. This foam has
a thin plastic sheet on either side. I ran the foam through the table saw
and cut it into 3in strips. I picked up a can of 3M spray adheasive. I
sprayed just enough to keep the 3in strips of foam in contact with the
female mold, keeping the plastic sheet on both sides. The foam in small
pieces is able to bend and maintain, without pulling away. Thus negatting
the need for a vacumm

Once the entire surface of the mold was covered and the end pieces trimed, I
pulled the plastic sheet off of the exposed surface. I then layed 1 sheet
glass on the inside. After its cured, I worked the foam away from the
plastic on the underside that has been attached to the mold with the spray
adheasive. This took a bit of time but was not difficult to do.

Once removed, I mixed up a heavy slury of microspheres and epoxy to close
the small gaps between the foam, its a minimal gap because the mating
surface are mated 30 degrees. After a few thin coats of mico... I layed a

Jeff, just so you will know, I did some tests with the same foam you are
talking about. That foam has no peel strength. You can take a hold of the glass
cloth on a corner and peel the fiberglass cloth right off of that foam with
very little effort. I doubt it has very much sheer strength either. Klegicell
or Divinycell foams are much superior for your application. Just my thoughts.

well all, I think I have a winner!

I layed a
single sheet of 8.5 oz cloth and a sheet of deck cloth ontop and epoxied in
place.

Why I thought to convey my method is it cost me 8 bucks for the foam and
I didnt have to shave foam making a heckofa mess.

The final weight will be around 8-10 lbs after the bulkheads are installed.

for what its worth.

It is not a shameful thing to buy someone else's project and complete it. I
myself bought one that was to the point of ready for taxi runs. It matters
not to the inspector whether you built it completely or not, only whether or
not it will pass his inspection. You do not have to let on like you were the
original starter of the project, there is no need or benefit to this. Once
you get your hands on the project and it belongs to you, continue with the
build. If asked, just tell the truth, you picked it up at 45%,50% or
whatever stage it's in. The finished product is what you're going to show
anyways, and that's what the inspector will be looking at. Just pay
attention to detail, pick our brains here on the net as needed, and get that
bird ready to fly. My 200 yen's worth

Eric,
The FAA leaves it up to you to make sure the parts and structures are built
to the kit mfg. standards. You are not requested to show any construction logs
with pictures or any engineering documantations.
The FAA inspector or DAR will visually inspect the AC. He will ask you to
remove the cowl and inpect FWFD and then ask you to start the engine and
inspect that everything shows correct on it's gauges. while the engine is
running.
You will have to have all your documents and application ready (you have
plenty of time to prepare those)
From what I read about the project you have more than 51% of the different
tasks (I did not say 51% of the amount of work left) in the project left to be
done so you can be candid about buying it at the current stage.
  Enjoy it

need the complete paper trail from Rand Robinson to you. This means the bill of

the information. I had to do some explaining but got mine registered.
Mine is now ready for final inspection.

KR> Project - AWC

2008-10-12 Thread Steve Bray
Not to disagree..but...

Here in Jackson the local repair shop owner who took over the business from
his father as in he's been it all his life told me
He recently became a DAR although he's never done one as yet. In just
getting the DAR I would have to ASSUME he is up on the latest rules.

He is aware of my KR, how I got it and looked it over when I got it. I asked
him about 51% and the paperwork and he told me the rules are not as they
were and all I needed to do was write a letter saying I built this airplane
for recreational flying or something to that effect. I'm fairly sure he
told me the paper trail requirements were nothing as tight as they once
were.
Another DAR that I visit that builds Long Easy's and has lots of experience
as a DAR and knows about my partially completed KR told me to send my paper
work and pictures, not a computer disk,
ahead of the inspection. Didn't show any interest in who was in the pictures
as long as I was in some of them.

I got the impression from both of them that if I could answer all the
questions about the airplane
it wouldn't be a problem. I took this to mean that if I knew the airplane
from one end to the other
they were happy. That is a real good idea if I'm gonna fly it anyway.

These are not the people you deal with on a repairman ticket so that may be
another deal all together. There are a couple of friends here flying two
place Challengers now without N numbers and they tell me the FAA is pushing,
read cutting some slack, to get these heavy/illegal ultra-lights
numbered before 1/30/08. I know this isn't KR stuff but some people have
more than on airplane.

These are the possible mis-conceptions under which I labor, I hope they are
not mis-conceptions.

If you look at some of the kits out there they are
shipped with the wings complete except 1 side the
fuselage done except for maybe 1 or 2 panels, and a
few other things left to do. You don't have to build
the hole wing only part. It is a learning experience.
That is what it is all about.

Wow, Thanks for the great opinions, it really means alot.
For starters I am not really sure why I want to. I am one of those people that
just like to
do things different.
I really like the kr2 "as is" , theres really nothing wrong with the old
airfoil either, but the new one could be better if you like the result it gives
you.
I guess my primary reason would be to design a plane with a wide cockpit, and
curves like a
lancair. A big reason I chose the kr2 is because I fell in love with the looks,
so that doesnt make
much sense either.
One thing for sure, to make the plane lighter and stronger is usually a good
idea. The best part of
all of this is the great conversation with a bunch of elderly pilots/engineers.
Again, I may not do this. Yes I must do it for myself only, but there are some
changes that might
really make alot of sense to alot of you pilots with the experience you have
with your own plane.
This is the time to chime in if anyone has anything they would do different.
I have never met mark langford, but he sure has made alot of changes. It sounds
like he is happy
with his results.
I fly a j-3 Cub, a far cry from a kr2. As you could imagine, I really need
your input. Thanks again, all you guys with all this great experience is in my
opinion the people that matter most. Mike Johnson

I was considering parts sale to dispose of my KR2 project, but then thought
that I should offer the entire project before breakup. Project includes all
new parts. Remaster 2100d, prop, spinner, Cleveland B, transceiver,
transsponder, encoder, instruments, etc. If you are interested, contact me
via e-mail at brotherton_tom@yahoo,com or phone 760-723-8682. For anyone
just starting to build this would be a great opportunity to get all needed
parts at reduced price. Tom Brotherton

KR> "project" update

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Langford
NetHeads,

I guess I'm about to answer my own question. I'm sure there are lots of
alternatives as to the best hinge pin lubricant, but I suspect that good old
fashioned carnauba paste wax is hard to beat. My aft deck has been so
difficult to install that up until today, I needed somebody to push on one
side to relieve the pressure to get the pins in. It's been that way ever
since the deck sat flat for a year or two waiting for the rest of the plane
to get finished. When I took the deck off last Saturday, the pin was
rusted, and it was all I could do to yank them out with vice grips and
everything I could put into it.

Today I Scotchbrited the pins, and then wiped a quick coat of carnauba wax
on them. It took all of one minute per pin. After that, both pins slipped
effortlessly, with only finger pressure! Night and day difference...and I
highly recommend it! I didn't want to use any oily kind of junk because of
the mess. This stuff is clean. Try it...you'll like it!

I got the plane back together just in time to fly it for an hour before
dark. Five landings, and only one of them was something to be ashamed of.
One of the things I did was move the static ports up to within a foot of the
firewall, and that seems to have fixed the altimeter perfectly. Airspeed is
better too, but still reads high at the low end. I attribute that to
propwash, but further investigation is required. I did a stall to make sure
I still knew where it would fall out of the sky. Most of my landings were
in the high 60's over the fence, according to the GPS in calm conditions.

I did my first "time to climb" using a stop watch today, and it took five
minutes to climb 6000 feet off the runway. That was me and full fuel, and
climbing at 120 mph. It should do much better at 90 or so, but that'll have
to wait for another day. Gap seals should make a big difference too. I
think my VSI is out in la-la land though, I'll take it out and test it in
the next few weeks. Nothing I can do will make that thing work right, so I
think it's just toast, just like my altimeter was.

Also, I finally fixed the EIS tachometer function. I was having lunch with
a table full of electrical engineers Friday and one them asked if the tach
signal wire was shielded. Duhnope. I replaced it with a shielded
wire and now it's rock steady and accurate. No more 5000 rpm readings at
cruise for me! My third Tiny Tach croaked last month with a grand total of
45 hours on it, so I won't be pouring any more money down that hole. It
looks great on paper, but doesn't work for me. Any recommendations on a
small digital tach? I added the EIS fuel totalizer while it was down, so
maybe I'll have some real fuel consumption numbers soon. I also installed
the backup battery in the tailanother UPS battery.

Jim Hill finished swapping out some bad alternator parts on his plane, and
we hope to deliver it to Little Rock sometime next week, with me flying him
back. It's only 200 miles, so it'll be a 1.5 hour trip. Tomorrow I'm
flying to south Alabama to visit my folks, landing on my father's grass
strip. He told me to watch out for cows though! The weather's been
fantastic, and is forecast to be that way all next week. Life is good...

Ohh Great -- The only thing in our forecast is more wind.
Did you put a shield on the factory wire or replace it all the way to the
connector with a new shielded wire??

I replaced the whole wire with an MS spec wire that I fished out of the
dumpster outside our electronics shop at Teledyne Brown Engineering. I
grounded the end nearest the EIS and left the other one ungrounded. I cut
the braid off short and shrink tubed it in place on the coil end, to make
sure that the braid could never ground the coil. That's one of those things
that could ruin your day if it never occured to you that it could happen...

Just a suggestionback in the eighties, the racing
world started using digital gauges. WHen racers
complained they couldn't read them, a study was
commissioned by a university (I forget which one). It
found that people could read the gauges, but just
weren't able to interpret them as quickly as an analog
gauge. If you look at any race car now, you'll almost
always see analog.

Maybe digital is for the "generation after next" but for me, I wear an
analog watch because my minds' eye does not recon in digital.

I like gages with white faces and black lettering...makes the cockpit
brighter.

We are analog. We see angular differences, even out of the corner of
our eyes. Digital (and tape) displays need to be read which requires
looking directly at the gage. Also, there is the problem of
resolution of the digital display. Human Factors studies validate the
fact that until the screen reaches the resolution of the printed
page, speed of reading, accuracy of data acquisition, and retention
of data goes down directly with the drop of resolution. With an
analog gage (needle rotating around a circular display), the
resolution of the screen has little impact.
