Re: [lace] plastic for prickings
I usually print my pattern on a colored paper and use matte contact plastic to cover it. If I use two colors in a pattern I get confused :-) if one of the threads have a color that is similar to the plastic or paper so I have some colors to choose from, but mostly I use blue or yellow paper and white if I have a colored thread. The blue contact paper is rather expensive. The mind boggles g I don't know - the frequency with which we all discuss things, it might well make faster progress than a group which only meets monthly! Sue Remember the lace globe that we talked about doing for the Millennium? I don't think it was the making that would have been the problem, more where to exhibit it and what to do with it afterwards. At least this time there would be somewhere for it to be exhibited initially (at least the problem of number of entries versus gallery space has been addressed this time!). The maximum size allowed could dictate how many individual pieces of lace were incorporated, and we would need to discover the group expert on mounting. But I think it could be done - we have three years (when we know what the theme is to be next time round) and would need to stick to very strict deadlines (to allow time after completion of the lace for collation, construction/mounting, things to go wrong and getting it to The Hollies (or wherever). The only problem would be in the stability of the group membership over that period of time? [lace] contact film
Hello Spiders I print with a desk-jet as I have it always at hand. I used to use blue matte film. But switched to couloured paper as blank film is much more easily available as window decoration, next to the wall paper. But maybe that is just the case for crowded regions. Select a matte one without structure. I must admit the ink and/or glue does come off to the pricking needle. RE: [lace] Arachne group entry
I think an Arachne project would be wonderful!! Someone (or a committee) needs to draw up a cartoon of the whole, which has sections (as does HOOP) and then have those who want to participate indicate what sort of lace they will be working... (Or maybe I have those steps in reverse?) After another strategic session, laying out the styles so they flow nicely, each person could get their section of the cartoon... they would design and execute their lace in the size, shape and general subject assigned them. It could be quite spectacular!! Just out of curiosity, how many people would be serious about doing this? Write me privately, and I'll report the number at the end of this week... [lace] Re: Tönder
Hallo Lacefriends, Looking through my old Tönder things i had the idea to tell something about , for those of you who have never been there or couldn't come this year. Tönder is the oldest danish city who got the official town charter. It is mentioned for the first time in 1130 as a harbour-town and has a ship in its coat of arms. Then in 1243 the town got the right to trade inside its walls what's in danish called köbstadsret. About 1238 the Franciscan build there a cloistre. But than it become nessecaire to protect the people from the power of the North Sea and they built dykes during 1553 and 1556, and so Tönder lost its importance as a harbour. So they had the idea to support lace-making. the time was good for this. The first time Tönder was named with lace-making was in 1595. In the 18.cent. in and around Tönder more than 12.000 lacemakers did it for their living. Some of the traders and some other people become reach and so they built wonderful houses. I put some of my fotos on the webshots zhat you can get an idea. When i find the time I tell you tommorow about the Tönder-Festval and when I am back I tel you what was this year there. Aurelia It would keep us busy on the internet for hours It would indeed be so much fun - and we could make sure it was the sort of piece which all skill levels could join in. I had a mermaid piece planned for my group of kids I teach, where those who could draw would produce the initial sketch, the more advanced would make the mermaid, the others could do waves or weed or rocks. Sadly, it didn't take off - they preferred to work as individuals and have their own piece to take home - I can understand that. [lace] Lace on a baby T shirt
Here's what I've been doing last week: http://www.sandbenders.demon.co.uk/gallery/lizard.htm for my friend's impending baby. The T shirt was dyed once for each colour. The lace is a very simple pattern from a folder by Clare Burkhard of animals. The lizard is in whole stitch, with the outlines in cloth stitch and twist. The body takes 6 pairs, with 3 pairs being added for each leg. I used Bockens 35/2 linen, which I just happened to have in a blue that exactly matched one of the dye colours. Now in progress a big orange fish from the same pattern folder to go on a mainly blue shirt. After that, then the bootees from Lapsia Nyplaten (Children in Bobbin Lace), p64, by Eva Lisa Kortelahti, that Alice Howell recommended to me. -- For NASA, space is still a high priority. And it is not just income tax which has increased. Council tax has increased by more than the rate of inflation each year for the last several years. Seems as though taxes are an universal gripe! Our rates (Council Taxes) have been stable for the past few years at, for us, approx $1200 per annum. ( US$1904 approx) Petrol here is amazing. Currently $1.24 per litre (US$1.97, or approx $7.80 per gallon!) Our income tax, is a graduated tax - the more you earn, the higher the tax, i.e. one rate to $28,000, .24 cents in the dollar, then up to .33 cents in the dollar. Company taxes are different again. Then everyone pays a flat 12.5% on everything one buys. i.e. a goods and services tax. that is generally calculated in the price displayed. You very rarely see any signage that says plus GST, thankfully. At least as we live in what is regarded as a poor town, where the median gross income is very low, we are included in a state run medical subsidy scheme, and we can visit the doctor for $15 (US$23.80), so we do have some benefits ;-), specially as hubby and I are asthmatics. [lace-chat] Tax Freedom Days
A Quote from a newspaper article in the Weekend Australian published on 15 May 2004: Taxation has been absorbing an increasing proportion of gross domestic product. If we think about taxation as a proportion of our time and labour, not until the national tax bill is paid do we start working for ourselves. That day is Tax Freedom Day. At the time of Federation (1900), taxation absorbed 6 per cent of the nation's GDP and Tax Freedom Day was January 23. In 2002, Tax Freedom Day was April 22, so Australians spent an additional three months working purely to service government expenditure. No-one in Australia seems to have bothered doing the calculation since 2002, so it's probably been pushed forward a few days by now.. Our petrol here in the country is current $AU1.09 per litre, which equates to about $US3.20 per gallon (using Jean's ratio of 3.75 litres per gallon). [lace-chat] evils of chocolate (long)
Fellow chocoholics, there is danger in our sinful ways! At least according to Dr Kellogg and the directives found in the cookbook of the famous Battle Creek Sanitarium. I found a 4th edition at an antique store this afternoon, and have had fun (?) reading through it. Some recipes actually sound quite good, but others, such as lentil toast (for breakfast) or delicious (?) oatmeal water, leave my tastebuds running for the hills. (Beet coffee?) The section on beverages points out, with regard to tea, that there is every evidence that this common beverage is exceedingly harmful, and that the evils of its excessive use are second only to those of tobacco and alcohol. It continues to point out that tea contains two harmful substance, tannin and theine, and that theine is in the same class of poisonous alkaloids as cocaine. Further, The dependance of the habitual tea-drinker upon the beverage, and the sense of loss when deprived of it, are among the strongest proofs of its evil effects, and should be warnings against its use. Coffee, cocoa and chocolate rank in the same category with tea, as beverages which are more or less harmful. Coffee contains caffein, a principal identical with theine and a modified form of tannin, though in less quantity than tea. Cocoa and chocolate contain substances similar to theine and equally harmful, though usually present in much less proportion than in tea. There probably weren't too many lacemakers spending any time at the Sanitarium. But for something that sounds *really* good on a hot day, they have a recipe for *real* pink lemonade. After you've made lemonade (with real lemons, of course, and sugar), add a quantity of strawberry juice, red raspberry, currant, or cranberry juice. Sounds much better than Oatmeal Drink just four above it. [lace-chat] sherry sauce for ice cream
We recently made this recipe which we have found absolutely delicious, and at the risk of being branded both a traitor and a hypocrite, will say it's better than chocolate syrup on ice cream, though this applies only to vanilla ice cream. A flavoured ice cream will hide the taste of the sauce, so go ahead and use chocolate. This is a recipe that came from Marcussen's, a very well-known and favourite caterer in Lancaster OH in the late 1800s thru early 1900s. The sauce will be light caramel coloured when done. Wine Sauce 2 cups sugar 2 cups white corn syrup 1/2 cup hot water 2 cups sherry 2 teaspoons red food colouring Cook sugar, corn syrup, and water to 234 degrees F. Let cool; then add 2 cups sherry and 2 teaspoons red food colouring. Stir. Serve over vanilla ice cream. Yield one quart, and keeps for months. Now, my SO doesn't drink, but I haven't pointed out to him yet that since this sauce is allowed to cool before adding the sherry, a highly reasonable portion of the alcohol will be unevaporated. In time, I may share this with him... At the time, we (here in the US) were complaining most bitterly about ours: $0.79... Of course, even then, we had nowhere near as good a public transport as was (and still is, as far as I'm concerned g) available in Europe, so we were more dependent on our *individual* transport... As someone (Patricia?) had said: it's the rural areas that get hit the most by gas price hikes; we don't have enough population density to merit public transportation in any frm (never mind get the chance to bitch about how it's deteriorated from the time the oldest people remember... g) I gave up my old gas guzzler for an economy fuel model 6 years ago. Yes, but... Here, you buy something that doesn't play merry hell with gas consumption, you're buying a *foreign* car... You're not *just* unpatriotic (by saving money on the basic price as well as maintenance); you're contributing to the downward spiral of the economy (car factories closed, people let go, with their pension plans down the corporate plumbing, etc)... You're *vermin*... and your car is likely to be keyed -- the paintwork gouged by the honest-to-God Chevrolet and Ford keys... by the true patriots... :) DH has had his car re-sprayed twice; I don't bother (I don't bother to wash the car, either; it moves *without* washing, doesn't it?) I don't, especially, like Kerry as the opponent but, by golly, his idea that we ought to get ourselves independent on the energy front, and do it, at least partly, by conservation (like: making fuel-efficient cars *here*) is, definitely, *sound* (to my 2 remaining brain-cells)... As with the taxes, I wouldn't mind paying the price, if I knew, for certain-sure, that greater good would follow... --- Tamara P Duvall http://lorien.emufarm.org/~tpd Lexington, Virginia, USA (Formerly of Warsaw, Poland) Healthy US through The No-CARB Diet: no C-heney, no A-shcroft, no R-umsfeld, no B-ush.
