Somebody jump in here.years ago there was a lady in NOL ...I want to say Francis Sweeter, who made table cloths by making strips of various Torchon patterns joing each as she went along ( I think). Re: [lace] Tablecloth Pattern Help.
Hi Babs, Answering to your message: I'm looking for a large pattern for a tablecloth. ...I would prefer a pattern which is all lace instead of inserts. If you would like it all in one piece. this means it will require thousands of bobbins! I have only once seen an inmense bolster pillow in Portugal, where three women were working at the same time, making a veil for a bride. Well, I suppose this is not your intention. My suggestion is to make the tablecloth in pieces: stripes, squares or a mixture of both. In this case, you don't need to find a pattern in a book (which can be quite difficult, I think). You can create it yourself. You only need to find a torchon pattern that suits you (edging and insertion), combine and enlarge it. (I would work the tablecloth in thick thread, but that's a personal thought). Then start working the pieces and sewing them together as you work. Here in Spain we frequently make shawls (which are about 70 x180 cm) and we make them in stripes: about 5 stripes of a same pattern, which are sewn together while working. This could also do for a tablecloth. For a better finish, you could sew an edging al around. By the way, how large is the table? Good luck, patience and energy for your job! Re: [lace] Thumping
At 09:53 PM 4/18/2005, you wrote: Thanks for the warning. I know my husband will not put up with thumping while we watch TV. Ethafoam has been my main pillow type for 12 years. I don't notice any problem with 'thumping' as I make lace. And I do it watching TV with DH just a few feet away. My ethafoam pillows do have a layer or two of felt on the foam, under the cover. I also use a work cloth folded in half. That makes 4-5 layers of cloth between the bobbins and the foam. My lace pillow often goes with me to meetings where I will be sitting and listening for a couple hours or more. My travel pillow often went with me to conferences where I would be sitting all day in meetings. Because I did not want to be a distraction (more than I could help), I learned to handle my bobbins in a quiet manner. I set them down, rather than dropped them, on the pillow. There was at times a slight click when two bobbins bumped, but no thumping on to the pillow. Admittedly, if care is being taken to work quietly, it is not at the highest speed. However, I did manage to produce about two inches an hour on the travel pillow edging, even when working in quiet mode. Not all foam pillows are the same material. The super dense foam ones I have from Europe are harder than the ethafoam from Snowgoose. There is more of a noise with them. If there is a concern about this, start with putting at least two layers of wool or felt on the foam pillow top, then use a sturdy fabric for cover. Some people like to use a suade or velvet fabric. If there is a nap on the fabric, it adds a bit more sound proofing. Just be sure the fabric will not fade. Use qood quality fabric. (I used a cheap plush fabric on a pillow once, pinned on a pattern and got delayed starting it. Several months later, I found the pattern was turning the color of the fabric. I was very glad I had no thread on it. That fabric was removed and put in the trash. Since then, I haven't used bargain fabric on my pillows.) Don't let stories of thumping bobbins scare you from making lace near your DH. After all, the TV itself is making a lot of noise and will hide minor sounds. [lace] Re: Weldon's numberings
Weldon's started publishing their Practical Needlework magazines in 1886, producing one a month on various crafts, and issuing each year's in sequentially numbered volumes. Vol 10 was published in 1895. So far, so logical. Unfortunately, the separate monthly instalments were numbered by topic, so Point Lace Second Series (say) could have been published any time after the first, making it very difficult to date the separate monthly issues. In July 1915, when you would have thought the best minds were occupied elsewhere, they started indicating the months on the cover, as 7/15. They kept old numbers in print, good for us, but not for dating! All this from A History of Hand Knitting by Richard Rutt, who has sorted out when the knitting magazines were published. So I work my lace in my study, where I savor the sound of silence and bobbins which can sing as loud as they want to!! I suppose that in closer quarters, this is difficult. Re: [lace] Welding Lace
I will have to tell my mother about your welding lace. There was a lot of it at our house too, as my father was a welder. I am sure Mom will be amused, I wish Dad was still here to tell him also. Lorri Subject: Re: [lace] Welding Lace My idea of welding lace is what decorates the front of DH's work tee shirts (he's a welder by trade) and if his overalls are not closely fastened at the neck the sparks can create interesting: effects. It works very well and only cost GBP10.00 a couple of years ago in June, when it was labelled as an ideal Christmas present! Couldn't find out if it was left over from the previous Christmas or early stock for the next one.. [lace-chat] Secret Pal Thankyou
Dear Secret Pal, Thankyou very much for the lovely bobbin case. It will prove very handy as I have just purchased some lovely new bone bobbins at our NZLS AGM Weekend and I will be able to keep them all together in this new case. The spangles will go on a pair of them also. Thankyou also for the crochet hook, a girl can never have enough. I am always misplacing my one. My husband was very interested to see the letter-card on Norfolk with all the old boats. He loves boats and the sea. He is off sailing next weekend to deliver a yacht to Tonga which will take about 10 - 12 days all going well, then he flies home in time for our 2nd daughters 21st on the 14th May. Hopefully I will get to make some lace while he is away. Bye for now and thanks once again. [lace-chat] Secret Pal Thanks
To My Wonderful and Inventive Secret Pal, The parcel came yesterday, whilst I was out at the coast with the two youngest grandchildren, so when I returned, it really bucked up an exhausted body. The photo frame is delightful - and with three grandchildren, I will easily keep it filled! It will have pride of place on the fridge, so it was a really good idea! The Bucks Point bookmark - well - you must be psychic! My Mum informed me that she hasn't had a bookmark from me in all the years I have been lacemaking (don't feel too sorry for her - she has had numerous motifs and things in frames!) so I will get the bobbins wound, and start that one for her - it really is so pretty! What a clever lady Joyce is - and it seems as if lots of you Tasmanian ladies are jolly talented too. The Tasmanian Branch ALG mouse mat is also an inspired idea - ours is getting a bit tattered round one corner at the moment, so I will alternate this one with the other one received from a SP - that one is also native Australian, so I am delighted with both. The bobbins are delightful, and so beautifully spangled with such pretty beads - I really am a very fortunate person, and do thank you so much. I will use them when I make Mum's bookmark ... Last but not least - the letter. The cards are so pretty, and you manage to get quite a lot of information on them! I am so pleased that you had a good time in Sydney, with your Dad and Rod's Mum too, but, as you say, once you are back at work, the holiday seems a lifetime ago. Thanks once again, Your Secret Pal Carol To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace-chat] Help to unsubscribe
Hello there - As my subject line says, I need help unsubscribing. When I try the usual method - sending an email to majordomo I get an error message telling me I am not a member of the list. I have written to the moderator asking for help, and I am still not unsubscribed. So what do I do now? Question: if I'm not a member of the list, how come I keep getting the digest? And yes, I know I am cross-posting, but I have the same problem with both lists. HELP! Rose-Marie H.
