Dear Sue,

I am an avid Bucks Point fan but try as I might I cannot detect
what the essential difference is between Bucks and Tonder perhaps you
could

enlighten me.

In my experience the main differences are these:-
- Toender is worked in the opposite direction from Bucks (but I don't)
- Toender is characterized by - large holes surrounded by honeycomb stitch

I find these days that regardless of which point ground lace I am making,
I use Chantilly techniques, and probably a few I've developed myself. The
end result looks lovely and only a lace-maker could tell the difference.

I very rarely fill in a petal for a floral motif with whole stitch - too
easy to see when you either have too many or too few bobbins. Half stitch
is much more forgiving.
Also, I never put any extra twists on the inside of a gimp in a motif.
That way the filling always comes right up to the gimp. Sometimes I will
add an extra one or two on the outside to compensate.
I use Elwyn KENN's looper technique whenever possible in order to avoid
the need for adding in short extra gimps.

Can't thank of anything else relevant right now

Re: [lace] Italian translation, please?

2009-01-20 Thread Tiziana
*Hello Tamara and All,

Provedadori sopra le Pompe is the ancient venetian way to say
Provveditori alle Pompe .
The Provveditori alle Pompe, as you wrote, were , in the Republic of Venice,
officers who watched over people to make them observ the leggi suntuarie,
the laws about clothes, jewels, fur.
There were, too , two Sopraprovveditori called sopraprovvesitori who could
decide when people did appeal against a provveditore's decision.

Pompe is pomp, magnificence ( for example vestita con gran pompa is
richly dressed
*
I think in English this phrase could be superintendents over luxury or
local directors of luxury

Hope this helps
Kind Regards
Tiziana

2009/1/20 Tamara P Duvall t...@rockbridge.net

 Gentle Spiders,

   the *exact* meaning of.

 It's: Provedadori sopra le pompe

I learnt, from various contexts (the phrase keeps coming up again and
again), what it *is*. It's a little committee of 3 people who are, in
essence, clothes police. They investigate the clothing transgressions of
upper class women (mostly), bring them to the attention of the Grand
Council, which then debates, legislates and issues new proclamations
forbidding this, that or the other (dresses have to be of single colour
only; no brocades. Sleeves have to be straight and narrow; none of the
ducal or bird's craw excesses. Sleeves should use no more than 2 yards
of fabric per pair, even on the undershirts. Etc).

[lace] Bucks point V. Tonder

2009-01-20 Thread Alex Stillwell
Dear Arachnids

While researching over 300 pieces of Bucks point for my book I found there
were more techniques and variations on techniques used in the East Midlands
than is generally realised. Just to take the footside - I found any number
from one to four twists on the pairs at the footside. I found varying numbers
of twists on the ground pair on the ground side before and after it passed
through the passives. There were pieces with one or two pairs of footside
passives, and some had them of thicker thread. About one third of the Luton
Museum pieces I studied had a half stitch for the stitch about the pin instead
of the accepted cloth stitch (A technique usually attributed to Tonder rather
than East Midlands). At one time I thought that the catch-pin stitch was
always made as a point ground stitch, but I have come across some lace that is
almost certainly East Midlands that has cloth and twist. I have in fact found
just about every technique listed as made in 'other countries', in the OIDFA
book on the Point Ground Lace Family, in East Midlands lace. The OIDFA book
is an excellent one that shows the techniques as they are made in different
countries today, (unless otherwise stated) but it is unsafe to use it for
identification purposes. Probably the only way to distinguish between English
and Danish lace is by historical evidence and possibly style and I am not an
expert on these.

Best wishes from a dull, cold morning in Sussex

Alex

2009-01-20 Thread Sue Duckles

Hello All Arachneans

First of all ... Thanks Janice!! The pin and it's accompanying 'bits'
arrived safely this morning! The pin is gorgeous, and the striver
pins very useful! I love the scissor fob, it will be attached to my
scissors later! The fob colour and the pin colours are my sort of
colour BRIGHT!!

But, the 'bobbin book'. What a Brilliant Idea!! I've heard of
using bobbin holders (flat wood with elastic) or knitting stitch
holders to keep bobbins safe (amongst other ideas), but this one was a
new one on me! They are Fantastic!! The idea of fabric 'pages' with
your bobbins in between, all stackable is just wonderful!!

Thanks to you and to the OIDFA members who donated these items.

[lace] Bookmarks from Retournac

2009-01-20 Thread Clay Blackwell
At Bev Walker's request, I have just uploaded to the Arachne Webshots
page two pictures which she sent me which she received with the press
release about the bookmarks. I have captioned the bookmarks with the
file names which were on the photos when she received them.

It is my impression from reading the press release (and my French is
*very* rusty, so I could be wrong...) that six bookmarks were designed
and made, to be presented to President Obama today, in honor of his
inauguration. I believe that people can also obtain the patterns to
make the bookmarks, hence the confusion about whether they have been
made or not. Evidently, the photograph of the hands at a pillow is
being sent with the bookmarks to illustrate how they were made.

Orvus is available in Canada in feed stores, but only in industrial
quantities (by the bucket full!).

Our lace guild bought one bucket and we are in the process of decanting it
into small recycled shampoo bottles so our members can bring some home for
their own use.

I've used it. It rinses out very well and has no discernable odor. It is
what is recommended for use by the Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI)
for use by small historical museums for their textile collections.

Tess (tess1...@aol.com)

Dear Tess and Others Interested,

Orvus is fully addressed, as it pertains to wet cleaning cotton and linen
laces, in a long paragraph on _www.honitonlace.com_
(http://www.honitonlace.com/) . Honiton lace is not a wool lace. Orvus is
the only product I use and
recommend for cotton or linen, as I believe that museum-qualified
conservators should tackle permanent stains on anything that does not respond
to careful
washing. Our Arachne correspondence reaches all continents, excepting
Antarctica, probably. My concern is that in many locations there are no
professionally-trained dry cleaners who work by hand (instead of using
machines). The
warnings on the web site are very clear. It is not pleasant to respond -
too late - to a do-it-yourself person who has ruined very nice lace of
sentimental or monetary value!

The Orvus paragraph does mention the use of Orvus on wools - the fact that
professional rug cleaners use it. And, that it is used to wash show animals.
I would never advise over-doing it -- washing animals or rugs too frequently
could present new problems.

That said, it is logical Orvus can be used for your wool laces, using all
the precautions you ordinarily use when washing wool. There is no wool
relationship to Honiton lace. It is as a special courtesy that washing
instructions have been placed on _www.Honitonlace.com_
(http://www.honitonlace.com/)  ;
not something to take for granted.

Cotton and linen laces are to be immersed in the Orvus/Distilled water, and
thoroughly rinsed (using *my* instructions, not your usual methods) until the
water in the basin is clear. Lace can be badly damaged when wet. You must
read and **comprehend** -- no speed reading -- how to avoid tearing and other
problems. No bleach.

If I included the whole set of instructions on Arachne each time this
subject comes up, it would run on for pages and pages each time. This would
be
costly in some countries Arachne reaches.

There are a number of different styles of Scottish jacket. The most common
is
a Prince Charlie, which is very like a normal dinner jacket, but shorter.
It's
worn with a vest and bow tie and is always black.B The other types are
single
and double breasted variations with or withoutB flaps at the hem including
the
Montrose, Kenmore andB Sherrifmuir. They areB worn with jabot and cuffs in
lace, and they are made of either black suiting fabric or coloured velvet to
match a main colour of the kilt. They are all fitted so it is hard work
making
them. I have to make two thisB year for my sons who are highland dancing.
Not
looking forward to it.

A tip for buttons. Instead of sewing, use anB awl to
punch a hole andB push the largeB shank at the back of the button through
the
fabric and thread a piece of cord through it long enough to join all
buttons.B Then just sew either end of the cord at the top and bottom of the
front of the jacket. It makes the buttons sit better and you don't lose any,
but you have to be carefulB with the awl not to damage the fabric.

One little
boy came to a comp last year minus his whiteB shirt. So we found a safety
pin,
borrowed a strip of lace and folded the lapels of his Prince Charlie up,
thenB covered the front with the lace and he was able to dance. And he
beatB me.

OTOH, the silver necklace (if that's what it was) which she wore at the
inauguration was really very nice and lacy, in the chunky,
Le-Pompe-plaited-lace, way... I'd love to get a closer peek at those
earrings, too; it's the first time I remember seeing a photo of her
wearing *dangly* earrings.

Re: [lace] bookmarks from France

Dear All,

I found Clay's pics, but they were at the bottom of the list, not the top as
usually happens with any new posts in other programs.

Some great work there...have just discovered this little treasure trove and
spent an interesting time exploring :)

Warm regards,

BTW. I didn't get to see Clay's pictures, either; the only new

Maybe not my day, despite it being such a wonderful and unforgettable moment

[lace-chat] Thanks Janice

2009-01-20 Thread Sue Duckles

Hello All Arachneans

First of all ... Thanks Janice!! The pin and it's accompanying 'bits'
arrived safely this morning! The pin is gorgeous, and the striver
pins very useful! I love the scissor fob, it will be attached to my
scissors later! The fob colour and the pin colours are my sort of
colour BRIGHT!!

But, the 'bobbin book'. What a Brilliant Idea!! I've heard of
using bobbin holders (flat wood with elastic) or knitting stitch
holders to keep bobbins safe (amongst other ideas), but this one was a
new one on me! They are Fantastic!! The idea of fabric 'pages' with
your bobbins in between, all stackable is just wonderful!!

Hello fellow Arachneans

Earlier I sent the message below out...

I didn't mean OIDFA. I did mean IOLI. So, thanks to the IOLI
members who donated the items!! (Sorry Clay, slip of the
fingers... or the brain cell - it was a blonde moment darlings!!)

Mind you, I'm sure there are some members of IOLI who are also members
of OIDFA, so they need thanking anyway!!

I am very bad at yards!

You and me both :) I've been here for 35yr and I still think in
metric... Brought with me from Poland scales which weigh in grams and
kilos, every thermometer in the house has both Celsius and Farenheit,
and every measuring cup, tailor's tape and ruler has markings for both
the metric and the weird.

How many meters is that?

1yard=3feet=36inches=90cm

It's easiest to remember that a foot is 30cm and that there are three
of them in every yard. So, Sue's 5yds is 30x3x5. That is, 450cm or
4.5meters

I just realised I replied privately to Agnes. (and I guess-timated
it was 4 3/4 not too bad for a guess!!) Anyway, she was being
