Re: [lace] Sister Judith
Finally my reaction on what Sister Judith said! We were making lace in her classroom when one of us said that she had made a mistake. Sister Judith looked at the lace and her comment was: “ it is not a mistake, it is a slightly different way of working. In fact I think it is beautiful” Then she added the by now famous words: “Whatever makes your lace more beautiful is right” Anneke Reijs in Roermond, The Netherlands > Laurie Waters wrote > > See the LaceNews piece that Anneke Reijs and I wrote about Sister Judith > just after her death on November 6, 2013: > > https://lacenews.net/2013/11/09/in-memorium-sister-judith-de-kreijger-d-nove > mber-6-2013-etten-leur- - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Honiton vs Withof
Hi Ann and all, I am not an expert on Honiton, but I can tell you about Withof. I know some of the differences. In Withof the patterns are drawn with lines, you have to decide for yourself where to put your pins. Depending on your thread and if your want your lace to be more dense or open. In Honiton the place for your pins is given, so there is less freedom in working the lace. If you give a Withof pattern to several lacemakers, the outcome can differ, sometimes much. In Withof there is more depth than in Honiton because of the rolling of the several parts of the pattern. Than just characteristics of Withof patterns: Flowing lines Fantasy flowers and leaves, scrolls and net Larger, with more pairs worked parts. Lots of decorations worked in the parts. And for the technique: Depth or relief by rolling. An extra twist with the runners between half stitch and gimppair. This is what Sister Judith ( the originator of Withof) called "her autograph". Of course there is a lot more about the patterns and technique of Withof, but I can not say how much different that is with Honiton. www.reijs.nl Anneke Reijs in stormy Roermond, in the South East of the Netherlands ann...@reijs.nl www.reijs.nl Verstuurd vanaf mijn iPad > Op 20 nov. 2016 om 13:26 heeft ann.humphreys <ann.humphr...@talktalk.net> het > volgende geschreven: > > What is the difference between Honiton and Withof lace? > > I have asked this question on a lacemaking facebook page after someone showed > a lovely piece of Withof that looked like Honiton but nobody seems to know > the answer. > Ann > UK > > - > To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: > unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Book translations
Agnes wrote: As a professional translator and interpreter, I would like to point out how expensive it is to get a book or article professionally translated. Many books on very specific topics, such as lace and history, will sell a limited number of copies, so translating these would make them prohibitively expensive. I totally agree with Agnes. I had the biography of Sister Judith after I had written it in Dutch, translated into English by a professional translator. That and the cost of the printing are enormous. And this is only a 'simple' book. I will have to sell more books than I probably will to cover the costs! I really wanted to let as many people as possible hear about Sister Judith's life and that makes it worth it. That and the nice comments I get by the readers! When there are enough lacemakers and historians who want a book like Brugge en Kant translated, I think they have to put together the money first and then go to Martine Bruggeman and her publisher. Hi all and especially those who responded to the video, Daan and Alicia were thrilled by all the nice responses to the video of their swinging lacemaking! Carol Adkinson has made them honorary members of her children lace classes and I can tell you that my grandkids feel honored. They really feel like VIP's! The responses were also educative. Daan told a friend about his lacemaking and his friend said; lacemaking, that is girl's stuff. So Daan told him that he knew boys, some even as old as 16 (he was talking about Carol's grandsons!), who also make lace. And that his grandma has male lacefriends, MEN! He knew that, thanks to the emails that Mark and David sent. For his next show and tell, he will take his pillow to school and tell his whole class about lacemaking! [lace] swinging young lacemakers
Hi all, Last week, our two youngest grandchildren (both 9 years old) were over for a couple of days and wanted to have a try at lacemaking. They finished a snail and have now started on a mouse! They loved the lacemaking and did not even have time to get dressed. And all the time they were listening to swinging music! I simply had to get my camera and video them! Hello all! Miriam wrote: Last year I travelled from Canada to the USA. I hped to get my GST back at the Toronto airport. Dear friends, you can't imagine what was going on there. I had to queue for the check in for about 3 hours. Since 1992 my husband and I have spend a couple of weeks each year in Canada and we never had a problem getting our GST back. Before you check in at an airport, you have to go to a special custom office - at the airport -, where they look at your receipts and stamp them when they fit the requirements. If they want to, they can check your luggage, to see if the goods are really taken out of the country. So you have to go to customs before you check in !! Back home you can fill in the form, add the stamped receipts, send it to Canada and within a couple of weeks the money is in your bank account It is in fact very simple. In the custom office we never had to wait longer than 10 minutes. This year we are going to Canada for 3 months We leave the 1st of July and will be back home the 1st of October. Re: [lace] Bobbins for Withof
Hi Noelene and all, You can find information about what materials you need for making Withof on page 6 of my first manual on Sluis and Wifhof Lace! But when you do not have the manuals: you can find pictures of suitable bobbins on www.brejaart.com I use bobbins nr 24 (30 and 32 are similar). Good bobbins for Withof are also 39 (40) and 44 and 45. Those are not too big, not too small and easy to make sewings with. The pillow you need is has to be flat and firm, but not too hard. A pillow with a O of 50 cm is best. Use short, thin pins with small heads. The special copper Duchesse pins are the best.. For sewing use a needlepin, with a slightly curved end. No crochet hook! Duchesse lace is mostly worked with cotton. Usually Egyptian cotton 80/2 to 170/2. Most laces in my manuals have been made with Egyptian cotton 120/2. The gimp should not be too thick: it is not allowed to attract too much attention. Depending on what thread you use for the lace, you can take for the gimp: Egyptian cotton 120/2, DMC cotton 50 - 70, Retors d'Alsace or Fredia linen 80/2. You do not need a pattern on carton with Withof. Paper with the pattern printed on it, covered with a piece of sticky transparant film goes well. Best works the matt, coloured transparant film. You can find more information about Withof and my manuals on http://home hetnet.nl/~aplag/ Anneke Reijs in Baexem, The Netherlands [EMAIL PROTECTED] ---Original Message--- From: W N Lafferty Date: 12/04/04 21:05:26 To: Lace Subject: [lace] Bobbins for Withof I intend doing a workshop in Withof early next year, and am curious to know what is the best shape of bobbins for the project. Re: [lace] Re: Withof
Barbara is right when she says that you should place the pins wherever you think they should go, but that is not as hard as it looks! Because there are some guidelines to help you! -- To decide where to put a pin, hold, after making the edge stitch, the 2nd pair along the pattern line. --The 1st pair is kept perpendicular to the 2nd pair. The place to set the pin is under the edge stitch, on the line. Works perfect, on straight as well as on curved lines! From: Tamara P. Now the techniques at the back of the book explains how to introduce pairs but not a single thread. Do I just attach it to a sky hook and cut off when I've finished working the roll? That's the only solution I can think of and I can t see a solution in the techniques - but it is late so it could be I'm missing something. Any help gratefully received Hi Jenny and all, When you need a single thread in a Withof roll you can just lay in that thread and later cut off the ends. The roll will keep the thread in place: no problem! And talking about Withof: last monday sister Judith got a hip replacement. It was a difficult operation - she is 91 ! - but she is well. Re: [lace] Exercises during lace making
Hallo Sulochona and all, The best you can do to prevent neck and shoulder pain is sitting in the right position when you make lace. Your shoulders always have to be relaxed, so not pulled up. When you hands rest upon your pillow, your lower and upper arm have to make a straight angle. Adjust the height of your pillow when this is not the case. So relax your muscles, because when you put tension on them, they will eventually hurt! In the beginning I had to remind myself to relax, but after a while it comes naturally. Re: [lace] witches work
toveressekant this is the flemish word for witchcraft, refering to the very intricate and difficult designs (for which you need magic fingers, haven't we all ???). Should this not be called magician's lace instead of witches lace? I would translate toveresse as a fairy godmother like the one Cinderella had and not a witch which has a nasty connotation??? What is a witch called in Dutch? We would call her a heks in Afrikaans. Jeanette Fischer, Western Cape, South Africa. The Dutch word for witch is heks, so the same as in Afrikaans. I agree with Jeanette, witches work is not a nice word for a beautiful lace! I found several translations for the word Toveresse - or tovenaresse as we say in Dutch! - in my translator: magician, charmer, fascinator and enchanter. So how will we call our witches work?!?
