Hi Tamara and Olga, In 1991, I visited the lace 'factory' in Vologda with a group of german lacemakers. The trip was organized by Marianne Stang, a very active lacemaker. We were very well received there. We could visit the working rooms and see the lacemakers at work. A very complete fashion show was presented and a visit of the new museum. Also, we had tea and cakes with the lacemakers where we could exchange little gifts. We were afraid then that this co-operative would suffer in a way of the political changes but it seems that the change worked out nicely. After looking at that pretty object, I went through a book for scissors collectors: 'La folie des Ciseaux' by Frederique Crestin- Billet and the closest I found p. 58 is in silver and has two fancy lions around the handles. Hello Francis, they asked if it was laceweight, and other teminolegy concerning the thickness of the threads A few years ago, I bought from you in Germany, at a DKV congress, 50% qiuviut 50% silk and I knitted a lace shawl with needles 3.5 mm. I would think this thread is laceweight but I know nothing about the Nm, Nec or den measures. Last year, in a museum in Quebec city, I was wearing that litlle shawl and a lady stopped me to say how beautiful and could not believe I had made it myself. Nice! Hello, I visited Vologda in 1991 with a group of german lacemakers and we were guests of the co-op ' Sneshinka' (Snowflake).I was the only canadian in the group. Vologda, being in a restricted area, you had to be invited to have the permission to travel there. We took the train from St-Petersburg (then Leningrad) to Vologda. The museum, from which we see a few pieces in the film, was new and everything very well exhibited: panels, curtains, dresses,etc. Really marvelous pieces! The large working rooms were very well-lit, the lacemakers very friendly despite the language barrier. After a tea from the samovar with special deserts shared with the russian lacemakers, we assisted to a fashion show of their production: shawls, collars, boleros and capes of all kinds. We were also shown the way the patterns are prepared by special designers. I keep a very good souvenir of that trip and the little film has brought back good memories. Does anyone on our international list know about Sea Silk? PieceWork editors are looking for information about sea silk, or byssus -- a silky filament secreted by certain bivalve mollusks to attach themselves to rocks or other substrates, perhaps near Spain. There is an interest in learning more about this unique silk, said to have been used for embroidery in medieval times.I will be happy to pass information, book titles, etc. to one of the editors, who lives here in Maine. I think some of you will be happy to learn that one of our friends on Arachne, Magda who has written a dissertation on Mechlin Lace, Lace Lappets from the 18th Century while doing her teacher's course in the Kantcentrum in Bruges, has done an english translation of her book. The book is very informative on the subject and the pictures and enlargements are beautiful. Not much has been written on that lace and it is a good opportunity to learn more. I do not write often but I guess that survey is contagious! Like usual for me, I have only one bobbin lace work going on. It is a swedish torchon 'Girlang' with square tallies. I have 30 pairs with Bockens linen #60/2 and one thread of 18/5 linen as gimp. I work on my Christina pillow and it is very relaxing to do. Besides, I am also making a necklace with Artistic wire #24 in spool knitting and I add beads. These necklaces are very popular in my circle these days and they have a very lacey look. Hello! This morning in our daily newspaper was an article on Poland because of their near entry in UE and I was surprised to read about lace. They say that a lacemaker from the village of Koniakow left making lace for the church and is now making sexy panties that she sells on internet: www.koniakow.com At first, it created a scandal in the village but seeing the success, even the old lacemakers began to make some too! It is certainly not bobbin lace but it is very lacey indeed. Tamara and Weronika can certainly translate for us. I remember having seen in Almagro, Spain patterns for bras and panties in bobbin lace. As a bobbin tree, I use a small repliqua of those quilt hangers (where you would put your quilt if you take it out of your bed at night). It has three bars that I use to hang the bobbins and has a nice heart design on the ends. I bought that many years ago in Racine,Wisconsin when I attented an IOLI convention. Nice souvenir! Now, I am finishing a small mat begun in a course of Punto Fiandra di Gorizia taken at the forum Italia Invita last May. That technique is worked with only three pairs - You are right, Tamara, Punto Fiandra di Gorizia is not Flanders. They call the flander stitch the ribbon formed with 3 pairs of bobbins. We can say that the ribbon curls on itself like in the Bruges flower technique but the ribbon is a lot finer and the joins are made differently. May be the association Bruges-Flanders can explain the name given to that stitch. I read with a lot of interest all about your projects and am ready to read more! Hello everyone! Yes, we have to keep busy while many are away at the convention. Good idea, Bev! During the past weeks, I have been sewing fabric to SIX handkerchiefs. Now, I am finishing a small mat begun in a course of Punto Fiandra di Gorizia taken at the forum Italia Invita last May. That technique is worked with only three pairs and is more easily done on a bolster pillow. It is fun to make and quite surprising what can be done with that technique. The thread used is Filato per tombolo di Cantu #50. I have seen it also done in color and with metallic threads. Thanks for your answer, Tamara. My lace is in white/cream Pipers silk 210/2 and it was begun at the lace course with Ruth Doepfner, the author of the book, in Ithaca on Oct. 2000. The fabric is also of a cream color so I will follow your suggestion and try silk for the sewing. By the way, another book on P-d-H with corners is on preparation and the patterns are beautiful. I made a visit to Ruth while in Switzerland in May and saw all her wonderful work. I admire so much those who make the patterns and the technical drawings for lace, knowing myself all the work involved after my classes in Binche and Mechlin in the Kantcentrum. There are days when you have to finally make things that were postponed... and postponed. Here I am with 6 lace squares that have been joined but without a filling in the center! I have one piece of Dentelles des Pays-d'en-Haut made in silk thread and I am wondering if I should use the same silk thread to make the sewing in 'point turc'. While taking part in the Forum Italia Invita in May, I could buy this wonderful book and also, a complement to it:' Kloppelspitzen an den Wertheimer Abendmahlshauben'. This is a softcover book with beautiful pictures of headdresses from the Wertheimer museum with 9 patterns, published by Marianna Stang and her sister Anneliese Wienands. Also,during my trip,I found the book 'Bobbin Lace from Steckborn' published by VSS/FDS, the swiss lacemaker association. The book speaks about the history of lacemaking in that area, a part is of torchon type with a special 'little mosquito' design and another part is lace made of horsehair and straw. The thirs part consists of 35 reconstructed lace patterns from the museum, mainly with corners. At Italia Invita, I also bought Punto Venezia , book on which Tamara gave a very good review.
