[lace] Lace teaching
My goodness I didn't mean to start such a debate/vent session. *blush* My experience with the other lace maker was at a demonstration and I was new to tatting. I had been taught by the president of our local guild just a couple months before and I was doing my best to throw myself wholeheartedly into the lace world. I was shocked at being put down for simply making a join in a different, but acceptable, style. I was also stunned at how this lace maker would inform the kids under 8 years age that they were too young to try bobbin lace. It made me quite angry as I knew full well that there are laces made by much younger kids in museums and my daughter (4 at the time) had helped me make one of those snakes. I was also shocked that, instead of promoting the local guild, this person informed everyone that if they wanted to learn tatting they would need to sign up for his/her class at the local yarn shop. A class that was $150 for Level 1 class (2 months long) and only taught rings chains. My thought, later after I had recovered from the negativity I felt, was how offensive the inferences he/she made were. That according to this person who was a certified tatting instructor all those grandmothers and mothers teaching their kids were some how unqualified. Or that those like the president of the local chapter - shouldn't be teaching because they didn't have some little paper. I have sense learned that this person is kind of notorious in lace circles for this behavior. Having vetted teachers at IOLI conventions is one thing, but isn't it part of being a member in IOLI to do gratis teaching and demos? Isn't part of loving lace making to try and inspire and encourage as many people as we can to take up the art? What I had hoped to encourage by sharing my experience was for people to be more willing to stand up for the new lace-makers. If we see something like *GASP FUME* someone cutting bobbins off that we'll speak up. Thanks for reading happy lace making. Robin D. -- Never, ever, let anyone tell you what you can and can't do. [lace] Contributing / helping build community
Just adding a thought: I hesitate to contribute. I have pickings that I've designed done or tatting patterns that I've worked the bugs out of, BUT I don't have what it takes to deal with complaints criticism. I am NOT a professional nor am I some uber OCD designer. I'm an artist and a mom. If I get a notion I'll do it up. I kind of wonder if more of us introverts would contribute more if we didn't feel like it would become open season on our skills/ideas. I had someone local tell me I was doing my tatting joins wrong (it was different than how this person prefers to do them) and I stopped a tatting for over a month. It sucked the joy out of doing it. Every time I picked up shuttles all I heard was doing it wrong. Yes, I know I shouldn't let things get to me, but... And people saying just get a thicker skin or some such nonsense does just the opposite. I live with depression and often those extrovert sayings we all know do more damage than good. I'm not sure how to fix it so that more shy people are willing to open up. Perhaps if you hear someone putting another lace-maker or lace style down take a moment to counter it. Compliment something from the bulletin or start a topic to get people sharing their favorite kind of lace or technique...I don't know. *blush* I am, however, working up the courage to contribute a couple of patterns to IOLI's bulletin. And maybe, just maybe, next year I'll have the courage to put something in the local fair. You are all amazing lace makers! Robin -- Never, ever, let anyone tell you what you can and can't do. [lace] Re: Stunned - hand made items/ IP/Licensing
I'm setting up a sewing/costuming business so I've been doing a lot of research in both the market of hand-made items use of patterns/fabric for further sale. What I've found is that there is a market for high priced hand-made items, however, lace isn't one of them. Things like pillows, dolls, dresses, corsets, etc are very popular. People are not going to pay HUGE money for my tatted bookmarks so I will eat the cost on those, but I can charge more for the Comic/Geek themed items to make up the difference. It's a balance between cost what people will pay. I've found the successful sellers have a mix of cheep and custom items. As to the copyright/IP side of things most of what I found is that the courts (in the US) have ruled that a person who buys a pattern or some fabric with a licensed image on it does have the right to then use those objects to create another thing which can be sold. The buying of a pattern or the buying of the fabric has been ruled to fall under first sale use. So, if I buy a magazine with a pattern in it, then make a bunch and sell them on ebay, that is legal; at least in the USA. Though it is recommended to put - Big and obvious - a disclaimer of affiliation on items with clearly licensed images - like Disney. This is not a licensed Disney product. It is however, hand-crafted from licensed Disney fabric. I am not affiliated with or sponsored by Disney Enterprises. It's also recommended that listings be worded clearly...ie Sundress made with Disney princess fabric. NOT Disney Sundress. Hope that helps someone. [lace] RE Pinterest
I love pinterest! I use it in several ways. I use it to collect pictures or links on a subject, to collect photos on a subject, to collect project ideas, to organize gif sets or memes for use on twitter/FB, and to collect sayings art work I just think are nice. When someone Pins something it can come from either a web site or from their own computer. If the before mentioned angels were pinned from the Yahoo image search page than it would Not lead to the full web page. The pinner just viewed Image copied the URL then and pinned it. I do this a lot. I'm not always interested in the full page loading with all the bloggy text and sometimes if you do you have to then wade through more recent postings or articles to find what you want. Oft times I only want the pic, not because I'm stealing it for some nefarious reason, but I simply only want the pic as a inspiration, A future share on other sites, or that's pretty to look at again. While Pinterest is a searchable/followable site everyone I know uses it for personal reasons. I like seeing what recipes one friend is collecting or the latest picture of Tom Hiddleston from another. It's not really a public forum, but more like someone looking over my shoulder while I'm clipping magazines or scrap-booking. I wouldn't worry too much about it. If it bugs you that much start watermarking all your pics - that's what I do. And in the end the truth is if you don't want someone to pin it or copy it or reblog it, etc...just don't put it online. [lace] Lace8 bummer
Well I was kind of excited to check out the Lace8 program. I don't design bobbin lace, but I was sure I could use it for Tatting...And then the bomb dropped. I'm beyond disappointed that it only works on a windows machine. I'm not sure I know anyone personaly that even uses a windows based computer anymore. I mean I know people do, just not in my personal world of artists and graphic designers. (I have the same frustration with genealogy programs) With Mac being the largest computer company in the world I would think it would be in the best interest of the software people to make sure there was a Mac compatible version. *SIGH* Guess I'll stick with Illustrator. [lace] Re: Lace Bobbins
Could these be part of a game? - YES! they are more likely Mahjong counters than they are lace making bobbins. The Chinese didn't make lace...they did amazing embroidery. As someone pointed out there is fabric or cord in some of the holes. I'd think they were beads attached to a bit of clothing or on strings used for hair decorations before I'd think they were anything else. Also, if that part of the ID is off they may not even bee Chinese in origin. -- Never, ever, let anyone tell you what you can and can't do. Prove the cynics wrong. [lace] Demos
I demo at city celebrations - 4th of July or founder's days. I find if you want to impress/dazzle older people they go for the frilly yardage, but if you want to hook the kids/teens things like the snake, or a bunny, or a dinosaur are the best. And more often than not it's the kids that really want to learn. I also have a book full of the the major types of lace that people can look through and ask about. The year I did a tape lace bunny I had kids flocked around me and even had several come back to see how far I'd gotten. Just this last month I was was working on the tape lace snake at my daughter's play group. I ended up with three 4 year olds wanting to help me. So I took a half hour and taught them. One keeps pestering her mom because she wants to learn to 'that braid lace stuff' some more. If you want to argue that the snake or such isn't lace than you'll have quite the fight from Idrija style lace makers. To paraphrase a saying, Don't judge me because I Lace differently than you. Is a sweater any less a work of knitting that a fancy shall? As to the idea that there are only 2 stitches in bobbin lace; I agree! Cross/ Twist. That's what I tell people. Once you learn that you can do anything. Yes, I know that there is a bit more to actually creating lace, HOWEVER, there is no rhyme nor reason to launch into some long spiel that will most likely make the other person feel they can never learn to make lace. As I say with tatting - you make one knot . . . over and over and over. That's it. The rest is learning to read the patterns. I feel the same about bobbin lace; you move the bobbin left or right that's it, the rest is reading the pattern. My 2 cents Robin -- Never, ever, let anyone tell you what you can and can't do. [lace] Self taught / on your own learning
I'm mostly self taught in bobbin lace. My local group does little projects at the monthly meetings. I wanted to try them so I just got some cheep bobbins and made a pillow (it's horrible and was quickly replaced). But I just put the pricking on and jumped in. The ONE torchon piece (a centimeter wide thing) I did not like one bit. I've looked at other patterns, including some that are used by local teachers and I think if this had been my first project I'd have quit. What I did do was go through a friends lace books and figure out what appled to me. She let be borrow some. I tried some idrija and loved it! Then at a show and tell I saw a Milanese piece and never looked back. Bought lots of books I think the trick isn't so much starting with a particular style lace, but finding the lace that inspires you to keep going. As others have said it's all Cross/Twist joins Ya, I make mistakes, but that's part of learning. I've only been bobbin lacing for a couple of years but I've already done up my own patterns and fearlessly jump into projects. It's finding the passion that's important. As books for self learning go I recommend: Beginners Guide to Bobbin Lace. Lot's of step by step pictures. My 2 cents, Robin -- Never, ever, let anyone tell you what you can and can't do. Hello, It's been fun to read about people's music likes for lace making. It also made me realize I'm a little odd. When I work I either put on something from Netflix (Sherlock, Wallander, Avengers, anime of some kind, etc) or I play my iTunes which has a huge mix of artists. I was reading through the BBC this morning and found this in an artical about the upcoming birth of William and Kate's little one. The christening robe will be a replica of one that has been used since 1841 The robe was made for the christening of Queen Victoria's eldest daughter. Made of fine *Honiton lace lined with white satin,* it has subsequently been used for generations of Royal christenings. The current Queen wore it, her children all wore it and so have all but one of her grandchildren - including Princes William and Harry. In 2008, the Earl and Countess of Wessex's son wore a replica robe designed to preserve the original. Love life and lace on! RObin -- Never, ever, let anyone tell you what you can and can't do. [lace] IOLI Convention
Hello, I am going to convention this year because it is being held 45 min from my home and I'll likely take the local train. I saved up my mad money for a year to just cover the registration costs and it still ended up being more than I thought. If I had travel expenses on top of hotel than I couldn't go. This is the first con of any kind that I've payed more than $150 for registration/classes. I've worked on Con committees before so I know they can be expensive, but I was kind of sticker shocked when I wrote the check. My one disappointment is that for the cost I can only take two classes. It was VERY frustrating to me that I couldn't take 3 or 4 classes. I guess I'm used to the other cons where you can take a dozen classes over the weeks time. with minimal extra expense. I was also a little frustrated about being required to pay for banquets. I don't think I'll even be able to go to them. Yes, for those staying in the hotel it's great, but like the Sunday night dinner...I wish I could have opted out. As it is It's going to be a tough week for my family with me gone so much. The time of year is BAD - right as school is starting (and daughter's birthday). Honestly I'll probably never attend again...It is just too much money for two classes and the time of year. *** I would not go on a cruse con even if the cost was lower. I abhor cruse ships. My sister was an entertainment director on a number of cruse ships for several different lines and the stories she tellsNO, I will never set foot on a cruse. Re: [lace] IOLI Convention
Hello, While I was thinking of those kinds (like NewYork ComCon or SanDeago ComCon) I was also thinking of writers retreats and literary conferences I've been too/worked on. GenCon and Life the Universe and Everything are the ones that come to mind. I really didn't mean to start such a negative vibe I was just trying to say that for me I can't afford the cost to make convention an every year thing. I would correct that the SF/F Cons are like trade shows. They are not; con committees seek out and pay to have guests come. I have worked on a number that have pulled in major talents in their field - authors and artist - who dp do long workshops with new talent and they DO charge fees for their time. The convention pays all their cost plus a stipend. However, the costs were often covered by sponsorship that the conventions were able to get - ie all the advertisers. I've never worked with a talent who was brought in by a company. We booked them and found the money to pay them. IOLI does not have sponsors so I understand that the costs must be passed on. That is the reality - lace isn't as big a world as comics/fantasy. But the reality also is that many who would like to attend (even locals) just can't when it's $500+ before even taking in travel/lodging cost. *shrug* thems the breaks. How I distinguish them: Reticell. Worked either in the cloth with pulled threads OR from couched thread and is geometric in style. It evolved into . . . Punto in Aria. Yep, reticella! I love this kind of lace. Your picture is good enough that you could simply lift the pattern off. [lace] Tatting community/ helps
I'm connected with a couple of great tatting communities. *InTatters* and the *Tatting section of IOLI*. You can get some great help and advice there. I've been tatting for a long time and very much prefer shuttle tatting. If you are looking to learn I recommend this style - it's much easier to do some of the trick of the trade. However, needle tatting is great for those who have issues like arthritis of bad carpel tunnel. This is best set of tatting videos I've found: http://entrelanzaderas.blogspot.com/2010/10/clases-de-frivolite-tatting-lessons.html Happy Easter! [lace] Needle Lace links with images.
Hello Here is a link to a blog with an nice needle lace tutorial http://merlettoadago.blogspot.com/2012/05/tutorial-2-reticella-bookmark-merletto.html- I believe this is a fellow spider as it's a tutorial of the bookmark I got last year*. FYI it's in Italian, but Google does an okay job of translating. You'll notice that she works over her finger. A pillow will do the same thing. I have a bolster and a short thick dowel that I use. I put the dowel on the pillow with a bit of fabric and then pin the pattern to that. Here's a link to a good pic on another needle lace blog I follow http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_mifZ2Qti8vE/S_Q5z6bIbkI/ATc/FRKyC8UR0G8/s1600/Venetian+Lace+Pillow.jpg * side story about my bookmark: I was looking at things on Pinterest and found a picture of it. I know I didn't put it there so I was a little freaked out. I followed the link and found her blog. And then found out that the lace wasn't stitched down on all side so it'll hook on the corner of the book. Did not know that; I just put it safely between pages in an art book. small world *smiles* Try various ways and see what works for you. Happy lace making! [lace] IOLI Luncheon
Hello friends, I'll be attending the IOLI convention this year (1st time) and I'm debating the Arachne lunch. I am kind of wondering how many people may be going to this. Also, I wondered if I have to buy the lunch to go to the luncheon and meet some of you. Being local I had just panned to pack lunches, but I don't want to be left out of meeting people. Any thoughts? -- To thy ownself be true. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. For help, write to arachne.modera...@gmail.com. [lace] Idrija lace supplies
I got a bunch of large bobbins with a couple of kits...I don't know if they are a specific type of bobbin, but the ladies in my area call the clunkers. They are 5+ inches long and use them to do Idrija lace all the time...though I don't use a bolster. I tried and my bobbins got tangled too much. SO I use a large flat pillow. *shrug* I did find the following places you can maybe get what you want. http://www.bobbinmaker.com/idrijabobbins.html http://www.designsbymarguccio.com/bobbins.htm Here's a lace group you might contact http://www.blen.net/segunda.htm%20http://www.blen.net/segunda.htm Also OIDFA might have someone who can help ya. You might try contacting the Idrija lace school and see if they can put you in touch with a suppler. http://www.cipkarskasola.si/ANG/index.html Good luck! [lace] Queen's Blue lace hat
http://i2.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article940892.ece/ALTERNATES/s615/Queen+Elizabeth+II+leaves+a+Service+of+Thanksgiving+in+Saint+Macartin%27s+Cathedral+in+Enniskillen Here is a close up of the hat with trim. I'm 100% sure its machine made. It looks like a guipure trim that was bought by the yard (you can see how VERY repetitive it is), but it may (more likely) have been produced for this outfit. I wonder if the bits on the lower dress were panels that were fitted together for that look. I've done that a few times on dressed. I checked a couple of my fave lace suppliers and no matches, but a lot of similar. I do love that you can make out her hat pins. -- Flying is learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. - Douglas Adams - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Altar Cloth Lace
Hello all, The altar cloth made up of all those squares was discussed on a blog I follow. The various squares were made my various people. The cloth is on display at the *Museum of Christianity in Ljubljana.* Herehttp://iltombolodietta.blogspot.com/is the link to the blog I follow - it's in Italian and can be translated using a button on the right hand side of the blog. I am in the middle of creating an all lace altar cloth for a local temple. The temples of my church have many altars in them (some for prayer and some for weddings and sealings as we call them) and all altar cloths are to be completely lace. 99% are crochet, but I'm tatting one and I've seen a few other tatted cloths. For the curious HEREhttp://www.moroni10.com/LDS/Temple_Tour/Manti_Temple_Sealing_Room.jpg Is a picture of the sealing room where my parents were married and you can see the lace altar cloth. the altars are all basically a variation on this theme. [lace] NY auction note
Hello, So my sister who lives in NY and I were going over the action. There are a couple of peice I love and would dearly like to own... THEN I looked a the buyer's premium percentage and about died. It's 23%! You basically add $100-$200 to the listing prices - it's more for higher priced stuff as it's added after the hammer price. so that $100 bit of lace becomes $125 THEN they add shiping and a $15 handeling fee...you are looking at 200 in the end. That rate is marginally less than Sotheby's, but only just. A nice dream, but not in this economy. As much as I'd love to own something like that I'd much rather take a vacation to Italy or someplace and find something in an antique store...that may cost me more in the end, but it's much more enjoyable. Re: [lace] Lace display question
Most of the ladies in my guild have small samples in a 3 ring binder. They get those clear plastic sleeves and put in a nice piece of paper that contrasts with the lace thread. Most either leave them unattached or use a bit of acid free tape to keep them from shifting. One lady has a whole range of laces from netting to torchon to tatting. That way the people can flip through the book not getting dirty hand stuf on the acutal lace and it's hard to walk off with. One person I know puts it all up on a board at the back so people can touch it, but it's so far back it's hard to see. Also at one park demo they put us right next to the dutch oven cooking...smoke everywhere! Lots of a hand washing that week. Me I just take stuff I don't care if it gets a little dirty etc. RLD -- Flying is learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. - Douglas Adams - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Demo 2 cents
I agree on the less toted the better, maybe that's why I tot tatting/needle lace everywhere. I have found with bobbin lace, however, that having something other than yardage or a hanky edge is best. In fact my group often has a little flat pillow with a snake bookmark on it for people to try out bobbin lace. This last July 4th weekend I demoed with a tape lace bunny that the kids just loved - one girl came back 5 times over the course of the day to see if it was done yet (not hardly). I also take my own chair. I know they often provide, but I'm short in stature and find that they usually have hard wood chairs where my feel can't touch the ground - thus cutting of circulations to my legs. If I'm staying more than 2 hours I haul out the fold-able captain's chair that's a perfect height for me. If I'm not comfortable I'm not happy sitting in the sun making lace and answering questions.
