Re: [lace] honiton lace
Hi Friends I've just returned from a Honiton lace course with Pat (Perryman). We all saw a copy of the transmission from ITV in the West Country. It was wonderful to see the exhibits in the museum with Pat's unique insight into their history, provenance etc. I note that several of you have honed in on the "speaker's lace" worn by Betty Boothroyd when escorting Nelson Mandela. Do you all know that it was made when Bernard Wetherall was the speaker? It has motifs from the four countries that make up the United Kingdom and took over 1500 hours to make. It's currently on display at the All Hallows Museum in Honiton (See link below, although the museum may change what lace is on display at their discretion) http://www.honitonmuseum.org/index.php?page=visitor-information Honiton is a great lace to make. If anyone wants to have go - Do! Don't be put off by the fine thread (fine Bucks, Milanese and other fine laces also use the 120 thread that is the staple for modern Honiton.) Just don't do a "torchon tug" with the thread! Hi Everyone I'm dipping my fingers back into crocheting and wondered whether to crochet with come of my lace threads. I have only ever crocheted with wool or with a no 20 crochet cotton for which I use a 1.25mm crochet hook. Does anyone know where there is a guide as to what hook size to use with which thread? [lace] Calling Lace teachers in the Midlands (UK)
Dear Friends I've agreed to attend an "Open Farm Sunday" event in Coleshill near to Birmingham in the UK to show and demonstrate my bobbin lace. Apart from a farm walk and talk, the farmer is trying to gather together groups of local, country crafters to provide extra interest. Some friends recomended me to him and last weekend I went to visit and show him some of my lace and what I'd propose for the event (Pillow with a simple pattern for people to try, my scrapbooks with photos of completed lace a pillow with a big "spectacular" design in progress etc!). I'll be in a barn that's been converted to a classroom. It's clean, light, and airy with a big table and desk chairs - and a tea making area. There's even a push pin board that's covered in dark blue that I can use to display some of my lace pieces! Today I'm doing my lists of jobs to do before the event and my list of what to take. The point of his e-mail is to ask if any of you who teach lacemaking in the area would be happy to send me contact details (off the list) that I could give to any of the visitors who might want to take up lacemaking. It would be great to have someone new take up our great craft. I haven't ever taught anyone else myself, and in any case I live about 35 miles away from the farm, which is probably outside the catchment area for the visitors. As well as a list of contacts I'm going to do a favourite web-sites list with suppliers sites. I'd like to have available a couple of sites where they could go to buy a complete kit to start them off if they are interested but can't locate a class near to their homes. I know Biggins Presencia sell a good one (I'm self taught frrom the boook in it) but do you know of any others? [lace] Posh Bags - testimonials sought
Dear All i'm lucky to be in possession of birthday money and want to buy a toolbox/bobbin holder for Honiton bobbins and tools (pin pusher, pin lifter, 2 prickers, hackle pliers, pins etc). Friends (whom I only see twice a year) who also make Honiton have said that Posh Bags make a bobbin bag that works. I've got Posh Bags catalogue and would like to know if any of you have bought a small bobbin bag. If so is there space at the bottom to hold a pin box and /or tub of beeswax? And how big are the pockets in the craft bag that has a 12 large pocket insert? I will 'phone them before deciding, but I'd like to know of your experinces please. Hi Maureen How close are you to one of our lace fairs (can you make Harrogate?) I know some later answers have suggested getting a new block for a pillow and cutting it to shape. But, if you can, how about treating yourself to a new pillow and use the "squidgy" one for projects that don't have middles. Re: [lace] Starts and Finishes
I think it might be better described as "the beginning determined by how we're going to do the end" I know the book's English sub-title is "The Beginning of the End" but from my reading of the book Ulrike's view was how/where you start a piece should be governed by how you're going to finish it. [lace] Birthdays, pins, arthritis & wow!
Dear Friends I know I joined the list in 2000. I found out about it from Jacqui Southworth who taught me bobbin lace through her brilliant beginners book. I know I've met 4 of you in person (please accept my apologies to those I've met, but haven't remembered as fellow arachnids!) but there are many others of you (firstly Tamara, who responded so well to my first ever question about the glove hankie) who I talk of as friends without having met you. I feel a little guilty because I've mostly lurked except when I have a question. The answers have always come - thank you to all of you. On pins. Except when making Honiton (whose pins seem to have bigger heads) I use Thimble Its to protect my fingers. Would these help Jacquie's friend with eczema - perhaps to give extra padding under the gloves she has to wear? On arthritis. Jean, thank you for your cheerful posting. I so agree it's about making the lace that's fun. I have a scrapbook with loads of "big" pieces that aren't finished because I didn't want to (the Bridget Cook Buck's point fan pattern that was hard to decipher springs to mind - there were two fellow arachnes making the fan at the same time who both stopped too!). If I make a mistake in anything I think * can it work without "retro-ing"; * if it can, does it matter if I don't retro (who will notice?) * if the piece will look "OK" to most I leave the mistake in as a "unique idiosycratic variation" (for our non-native English speakers this is verbal rubbish to justify not correcting a mistake!) * If I have to I retro - but the enjoyment of making lace is more important than the finished result (that's why I couldn't ever do it for money!) The wow! My membership of this list has given me * so much comfort that if my lace is right for me, then it's OK * if I want to do it in the traditonal way (or not) - this is where the answer is * membership of a global community joined in peace by a common interest - please let us grow Thank you to the workers - Liz for the list, Avital for moderating and the "40 regulars" who contribute and from whom we lurkers all gain. [lace] Bookmark tails was Gravenmoerse, 10th anniversary and sale price
Dear All Thank you for your kind comments. I've had a couple of requests for how I do the finishing off so here goes! This bookmark has a straight edge so as I go down the sloping edge I work from the body of the bookmark in cloth stitch (CTC) until the two outside pairs are reached. Tw1 the weavers then work the last two pairs CTCT. pin under two pairs. Take the second pair in and CTCT with the next pair to cover the pin. Work back to the main body of the bookmark CTC. Tension carefully to stop the thread bunching. Take the next pair from the main body of the bookmark and repeat. After four edge pins have been worked and you've taken a pair back through the passives throw out the pair immediately inside the edge pin. Continue until you've removed enough pairs. After this I only work two passives after the pin to prevent the edge getting too thick. The tassle. (I've developed this from the tassle Irene Tomlinson used in the Bucks Point Bookmarks Spring, Summer, Sutumn, Winter) After the last pin on each side has been worked, take the outside pair from each side through all the pairs to the centre. CTC pin CTC with these pairs. Keep these pairs separate from the rest. Lengthen all pairs (I have all my bobbins hanging off the pillow and often take the bobbins off the last two pairs to facilitate tying) and lift them over the pairs that worked the last pin. *Tie a reef knot with the pairs that worked the last pin. Lift the passives again and cross the pairs behind them. Repeat from * until the tassle is one knot longer than you need. Cut off all the pairs leaving the threads long. Tie all the pairs, including those used to make the tassle in a single hitch and tighten. Trim off the excess thread. How many pairs? Well it depends on the pattern. For this one I had 34 pairs and used 18 in the tassle, so I remove 8 pairs from each side as I was completing the point. Things to consider How fat do you want the tassle How many pairs can you fit in down the edge (this will determine when you start throwing out)  I hope this makes sense and will be of interest!  Viv Worcestershire UK - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [lace] Large lace patterns
Dee I can sympathise. In 2002 I started to make a Lace Fan from a design by Bridget Cook. There were two other arachnes making the same fan at the same time and we all had issues with the design. But what finished me was the stretching to get to the bobbins I was working. I had to sit at a table, not comfortable and not how I see a leisure activity at all! To say nothing of attaching a piece of polystyrene to my (homemade) pillow with knitting needles so that I could have a pseudo pillow extension. After completing 1 1/2 pattern repeats I admitted that I wasn't enjoying it and cut the design off. I knew my lacemaking skills were up to completing the fan, I just wasn't prepared to continue with the pain (in the neck, shoulders arems etc!) The bit that I did complete now has a page to itself in my Lace scrapbook. I swore I wouldn't attempt another fan unless and until I have a proper fan pillow, and I've stuck to that. I know I haven't helped with your problem - but it did bring back some memories. I hope one of our other lacemakers has some more positive advice! Thanks, Clay.(I've also made on or two changes - more colour, half-stitch spiders instead of the blocks inside the coloured trails) I finished the lace yesterday 28 September exactly 10 years after I made my first whole stitch bandage. Shame we didn't have some bubbly to celebrate! I made this particular bookmark as a "commission". A friend wants to give it to someone for Christmas and I think she's going to want to pay me for it. If any of you have experience of selling lace I'd appreciate some guidance on what to charge for something like this. (If you wish to e-mail me privately on this I'll use any comments strictly for my own assessment of what to charge and keep anything you tell me confidential) I clearly can't recoup anything like the labour cost involved in making this, and I haven't incurred any design costs, but at the same time recovering only the material cost - GBP0.50 ish? would probably be selling all lacemakers' efforts short. I'm not sure that I'll be able to accept anything - I make lace for fun and the commissionor is a good friend! Dear All You've done it again - re-inspired me! I've only made one hankie - for the groom's Mum when a cousin got married recently. I did a simple Buck's Point edging - straight with gathers to go round the corner. The hankie fabric was 8 ins square - I actually had a pre-hemmed white cotton handkerchief that I got from Tim Parker. I can't find any others and from earlier discussions on this list I gather that I'm not alone. Now my niece has recently got engaged and my masterplan was to make a garter for her, a hankie for each of the Mum's and bookmarks for the bride & groom. I got 10ins of another Buck's edging completed and decided to have a rest! I've since taken the lace off the pillow and had decided to give up on the hankies and concentrate on the garter. Your comments have made me think of changing my mind - but I wasn't too careful removing the lace from the pillow (the pricking and lace is in the middle of the pins (ie half way up the pins after pulling out) so I don't know how easy it'll be to put it back on the pillow. And there's still the vexed question of where to get hankie fabric from -Â any ideas? Has anyone found a source of quality plain white ladies hankies of a sensible side? I've put a high resolution detail of the book mark which shows what I mean http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/photo/2407634650048870129QsSjZy Can any of you who know how to do this lace "properly give me any hints on what might be amiss? I'm making this one again with a torchon half-stitch trail in for the chevrons and halftitch spiders inside the big squares! [lace] Gravenmoerse - translation please
I bought the book 1 of gravenmoerse patterns this weekend and I want to make them all NOW. I've found the prickings clear and some of the words easy to translate, and feel confident that I can make the patterns "work" with my knowledge of torchon and the general instructions at the back of the book. But certainly first time around I'd like to make the patterns as the author intended and wonder could one of you help with some of the terms in the "techniques used"? In particular gesloten speldslag; and knipschaar I assume that "linnenslag" means whole stitch or linen stich, but is this ctct or ctc? The instructions describe "Brussels Ground" - Is this the most usual ground for this type of lace? Is "rechte rand" a torchon type straight edge? What is the Gravenmoerse way of doing picots? (knotted like Bayeux lace or several twists like Bucks?) [lace] Variegated threads
I love them! I know you have to experiment to see what works and what doesn't. My faoured uses of variegated are for trails in mats and book marks. I sometimes use variegated throughout on a bookmark with a contrast plain colour in fans or waevers I was at the Chepsrow Lace Fair on Saturday nad received a two pronged inspiration - Guterman Sulky thread (that I managed to leave behind at the fair - many thanks to the supplier for posting it on!) and the 's Gravenmoerse book 1 - 13 bookmarks, all bar one have a variegated weaver thread somewhere. Please can one of you complete the white hankie edging I have on the pillow so I can start something new! [lace] Needles & Thread
Dear all Earlier this week I visited the needle museum in Redditch, Worcestershire. The museum was a working needle factory until 1958. What an enlightenment. I'll never look at needles in the same way again! (Those who sharpened the needles got paid what seems a massive guinea per week (£1.05 GBP) in the 1860's, but had a life expectancy of about 30 years - they used to cough up lumps of stone dust from the grinding machine, and objected to the introduction of face masks because the improved safety might lead to a reduction in their wages.) The point of the posting is that in the shop apart from more varieties of needle than I've ever seen there was a small quantity of thread for sale. I bought some Steff Francis Mercerised cotton that looked about "special dentelles" thickness. The only marking on the label was "Steff Francis Mercerised Cotton MC 32" When I got home I looked in Brenda's book and having untwisted the end of the thread there are three threads spun together, so I think it must be "medium". Can anyone advise if the MC32 means anything to do with thickness (and if so, what). (I did wonder if it might refer to the colour) Thanks Viv Worcestershire UK - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[lace] beeswax
Dear all thank you for your responses. I've cut a small chunk off the end of the block and put it into a 35mm camera film tube cut in half (ie to make a small tub about the size of the wax) I've made my first pricking with it - It's wonderful not to hear that popping noise as the stuck needle drags its self out of the card! Please forgive the poor English - I can normally write in proper sentences! [lace] beeswax
Dear Friends There was a farmers' market at work today, and one of the traders was selling honey and other "bee" products. I saw a block of beeswax that seemed quite inexpensive (GBP 1.25 for a block about 1cm x 2cm x 8cm ish!) I know that beeswax has something to do with cleaning pins, so I bought some. But can anyone tell me how I should use it, and how it doesn't spoil the lace! Hi Everyone While at work today I met someone who lives and works in Tenbury Wells at the "join" of Worcestershire & Shropshire UK. She wants to start making lace. Please e-mail me with a contact name or nuimber that I can pass on, or that you think might be ok & I'll check with them before passsing on their details. Re: [lace] Val Dewar garter
I have to confess it's one of my own that I designed in despair! I'd started one of the Biggins ones but, although it was going to look brilliant, it was taking too long. So I changed to simpler, narrower and thicker threads! This one is madeira 30 and equivalents. Jenny (and interested others) if you'd like the pricking I can e-mail it as JPEG, please let me know. The fans were worked with 2 permanent passives - gold on the outside and the blue next. I twisted the blue weaver an extra time at the outside edge to keep the non-weaving blue thread at the edge Viv Just returned to Worcestershire UK after a lovely week in France (Work tomorrow, G) - Original Message From: Jenny Brandis <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: arachne Sent: Sunday, 11 February, 2007 6:30:37 AM Subject: [lace] Val Dewar garter Hello Val Can you tell me where you got the pattern for the garter you have on the Arachne2003 webshot site? I love the way you got the blue worker in the half stitch fan to give the whole garter a hint of blue without overpowering the whole thing. It is very well done and I will be trying out those 'spiders' in the near future as they are quite effective. Re: [lace] bucks garter lace
Hi sue I haven't done a Buck's garter, but I did a torchon one last year and made a metre (39ins) of lace. It was only just enough. I think you need at least 2 x the circumference of the thigh concerned! Viv - Original Message From: Sue <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Arachne Sent: Tuesday, 30 January, 2007 7:29:19 PM Subject: [lace] bucks garter lace I have been working my bucks point garter strip of lace (Wedding Bells, in Stott and Cook 100 traditional patts). I have done about 25 inches and am wondering what others who have made bucks point garters would consider a sensible length. I was thinking 30 inches and using ribbon approx 1 inch on one edge and not in the centre.
