[lace] Cotton
A friend has just given me a cone of cotton she once bought in Bruges. Isis 60/2 Egyptisch Katoen. What lace would it be suitable for please. Re: [lace] Cotton
Whilst I haven't seen that brand of 60/2 Egyptian cotton I'm pretty sure it will be fairly fine, and being 2 ply will work up into a soft lace which drapes well, so suitable for clothing trim. Point ground, fine torchon, Bedforshire - whatever your personal preference. Brenda On 3 Mar 2014, at 11:39, ann.humphreys wrote: Isis 60/2 Egyptisch Katoen. Re: [lace] Cotton
I used this thread several years ago when I made an Alex Stillwell piece out of her Geometric book, looked a bit like tipis to me around the square hanky frame I made. The pattern was bucks point, so quite fine and in the early part of the pattern i did have one or two problems with it pulling apart, about the S or Z twist I think, or maybe at the beginning of the spool. Once it had happened twice I was fairly careful with it and the piece worked up nicely and after a hefty push from Elizabeth in Australia ;-) I actually got it finished off and around the edge of my hanky. Have fun Ann. [lace] cotton thread
Hello All! Does anyone have any experience making lace with Cucirini Tre Stelle Per Orli A Giorno No. 100 thread? I found some at an embellishment shop yesterday bought a spool. Lovely colors quite fine. I couldn't find it in Brenda's edition 5 but perhaps it's under a different name? It's supposed to be 60wt but seems finer to me. Any advice? Many thanks. Re: [lace] cotton thread
Tre Stelle is part of the brand name. I have a spool or two purchased from a serger store. Info here: http://www.tristan.bc.ca/cucirini_history.html and a link to their manufactory in Italy. A link on the left features 'Thread Uses' where you can see the intentions for the respective cotton 60 wt., and I think A Giorno means everyday use - in the thread uses, note that 'bobbin' means the sewing machine bobbin, not our lace bobbin...however it is a strong thread and would be good for fine laces! Re: [lace] cotton thread
Hi Susan I've not heard of it, let alone seen any! It's labelled as No 100 but said to be 60 wt. That would be because it's metric number (Nm) 100 and cotton count (CC) CC=Nm/1.69 Google translates the Italian Cucirini Tre Stelle Per Orli A Giorno as Cucirini Three Star Rims For A Day so I'm guessing tat it's a three ply thread. There are very few 60/3CC or 100/3Nm threads around so I can't even guess as to the sort of w/cm it might be - indeed I'm even guessing that it's cotton! Re: [lace] cotton thread
It's quite lovely fine; the colors are zippy. The color I bought is sort of a kiwi or Key lime green. I will report back when I've made something! Perhaps it's an alternative for Madeira Cotona? It seems as fine or slightly finer than MC with a tighter twist. Re: [lace] cotton thread
Thanks Bev! Looking at the uses on the Tristan site--they are suggesting this thread for heirloom sewing so it sounds like a winner for lace since it's Egyptian cotton! It was purchased thru Sue Spargo, along with Genziana some jazzy embellishment threads for wool applique. Sue teaches in Italy so this all makes sense. Thanks for helping solve the mystery. [lace] cotton and linen
On the topic of hanky fabrics, (i)Copelands in Ireland no longer keep hanky linen. They tell me that most of the Irish weavers are closed and they cannot source it. (ii)Yes, Lacis still sell pin stitched cotton centres. The smallest is four inches. (iii)I haven't found any pin stitched linen centres at Lacis. I am glad I have found a supplier for linen batiste in Europe. I should make up a hanky and report on how it works up. Best wishes, Joanne, Downunder, beautiful Autumn day here. [lace] cotton plaiters and pin makers
Greetings, I've been doing some family history research recently. My paternal 4 greats grandfather (one Simon Cowcher) was a tailor in London - from the early Census returns it would appear that 2 of his daughters were 'cotton plaiters' - wonder what that actually invloved - I can only find references to straw plaiters on Google. If any one out there has any info on cotton plaiting . My 5 great's grandfather was William Cowcher and I have found that there was a pinmaker's called Cowcher and Finch (1794) in the same area of London the Cowchers were living in in 1841 so maybe his father was a pin maker. All this info gave me quite a buzz - they say what goes around comes around - here am I plaiting threads and using pins. [lace] Cotton net (again)
Hi All! Do any of you know of any good suppliers for cotton net at a reasonable price that haven't been mentioned onlist lately? Anywhere in the world? Most of it is quite expensive, as you know -- such a simple thing (unlike lace), yet so expensive! It's not worth putting all the work into nylon tulle, I realize, just because I have it on hand. Most of what I've seen on the net (no pun intended) is in the vicinity of $25 a yard - more than I'd like to pay, if that could be avoidedAnd I don't have the patience (or skill) to make my own! Thanks in advance for any sources you might be able to suggest! [lace] Cotton Net
I hit the reply instead of reply all on this one, so only Jean Nathan got my reply about picking up cotton net, sorry about that Jean. I've just had a check of my favourite store, online, www.marthapullen.com, she carries ivory and white cotton net at $25.95 US. I often get things from them and have had no trouble. There are pictures of the net on the website, look under catalog and search for cotton net. [lace] Cotton net
Hello Arachnes, In my search for tutu information I found a supplier for cotton bobbinette at a reasonable price from a tutu supply company. http://www.tutu.com/ntn_fabric_net.html I'm not sure if this is suitable but it may be worth a look. [lace] Cotton net supplier in the UK
Dear spiders, A friend is trying to source cotton net for Lacemaking in commercial quantities from the UK. Does anyone have details of a source? Any leads would be greatly appreciated. I never have the problem of how to get through a whole day of Lacemaking. I never have the luxury of making lace all day! Best of luck to those who do. [lace] Cotton/linen for mounting
I've been looking for some organdie to have a go at Carrickmacross (some time in the dim and distant future) and some cotton lawn. There's a lousy selection of suitable shops in Poole - like one. There's another fabric shop that I know of in Bournemouth, but that's an effort for me to get to and I don't know what they stock - could telephone to find out I suppose - and Hobbycraft said they just sell ordinary fabrics, whatever that means. I usually buy on-line from Wolfins Textiles. They deal mainly in cotton and linen fabrics, and if you tell them what you want to do, they'll suggest everything that might be suitable. They deal in person or by mail order (for the Uk at least). They've put samples of lawn and organdie in the post for me today so I can choose and place an order tomorrow. I've dealt with them before, and have always been totally satisfied. Their web site isn't awe-inspiring, but they're both very business-like and friendly in dealing with customers. http://www.wolfintextiles.co.uk/ Usual disclaimers. I think our American cousins don't understand how bad the decline in our fabric shops has become in the UK.
