[lace] IOLI Convention
Hello from Reno. I am un-lurking to say what a pleasure it was to meet with the Arachne group last night at the IOLI Convention. Thank you to Janice Blair for setting up the meeting. It was good to see people I first met in Arachne’s early days. I am enjoying Convention and taking Holly Van Sciver’s Honiton class. [lace] IOLI Convention 2022
We finally had an in person meeting. There were seven of us who got together and had a good chat. It was lovely to see people who I had not seen for many years, including Penny Boston and Nancy Neff. I managed to recognise both even though we were wearing our masks. Rosemary Horr couldn't join us as she was manning the display room but she did send a pair of bone Midlands bobbins for our raffle. Hopefully next year we will have a larger group in Reno, Nevada. Like Ilske, I found Arachne has been quiet. Finally got a Digest but only two emails. I am going to the IOLI convention in Mesa, Arizona and wonder how many Arachneans will be attending and whether it is worth us getting together for lunch as we have done in the past. Please reply to the list if you are attending and want to do our usual thing. I am in the morning Wire Jewelry class with Belinda Belisle. [lace] IOLI Magazine - Arrived
Thanks for all the replies. It seems that delivery is very spotty and I was happy to find I was not alone in waiting for the Bulletin. Today my DH brought in the mail and tried to hide the fact that under the fliers was the magazine.  I was anxious because it seemed ages since the online version was available but can now do a happy dance. Looking forward to tomorrow and the start of the IOLI Uncon.  Getting up for 7:00 am might be hard though, and luckily, I don't think I have to worry in folks seeing me all bleary eyed as I do for my lace guild Zoom meetings held in Illinois. Re: [lace] IOLI UnCon 2.0
Robin asks: Whose morning? Whatever is designated "ground zero", there will be 23 other time zones. If it's, say, 8 AM in Greenwich, it's 1AM here in California, around dinner time in India, and roughly bedtime in Australia. Worse, if it's morning in Australia, it's tomorrow (or is it yesterday?) in the US, because of the International Date Line! Good question, Robin. It is 7 AM Pacific time which is the time that we are making our schedule in (ground zero in your parlance). As you know, I am in New York time, so I am becoming adept at adding on 3 hours to Pacific time. So it is 10 am New York time, or Eastern Daylight time. I urge all others to take advantage of internet time converters, just to be sure, but I think that is 3 pm British Summer time, and 4 pm Central European time. These tours are hiding under the soubriquet of "Special Presentation"on the schedule to be found at https://sites.google.com/internationalorganizationoflace.org/uncon/event-details/special-events-members-only?authuser=0 This vagueness is because there are still a lot of details to be worked out. [lace] IOLI UnCon 2.0
Yes, we are doing it again! An online convention for the International Organization of Lace. Last year we pulled together an online event on relatively short notice when we canceled the yearly convention. This year we have had more time to work on it and our ambition has been unbridled if not hallucinogenic. We will have at least 27 classes with the potential for 357 maximum student slots. This will be handled through the Lace Museum which has spent the last year refining the experience of online lace classes through their own offerings. Classes are open to members and non-members and there will be a charge. The Lace Museum is hoping to have final details about the classes available on or about May 1. Registration for members will begin on May 15. We will have a concert of Lace Tells by Jackie Oates. There will be a talk by Yvonne Scheele-Kerkoff called "Beauty of the Orient Painted in Thread." There will be a talk by Kara Quinteros in collaboration with Orenburg Shal, lace knitters of Orenburg, about their work (open to the public) . There will be a joint talk by Elena Kanagy-Loux and Cajah Reed about their domination of the lace Tiktok realm. They routinely receive a million views of their TikToks, mainly by Gen X'ers. Then some of these Gen X'ers seek out lace instruction, often through the Lace Museum's online classes. Virtual Vending will take a giant leap forward from last year's rather static format. This year there will be Trunk shows in which the vendor gives a filmed presentation of interesting wares along with convention specials. This will be open to the public. We are planning a "Trip around the World" with presentations from different lace museums or museums with lace collections every morning. Interactive fun will be achieved in a Lace Trivia Game. Form your own team or be matched with others. Some may recall that in our last live convention our team, "Media Committee" came close to winning the bobbin lace on a watermelon challenge. I think it is safe to say that the formidable competition posed by Media Committee will not be a problem this year because Media Committee is not competing due to running the convention. Also, we will have a Lace Identification Bingo Game. You will have a Bingo card marked with the names of different laces. Slides of photos of laces will be shown, with their identification and you will mark your bingo cards. As I am compiling these slides, I will confess that I had planned to use museum photos entirely, but now find that I am taking a lot of the photography myself on my kitchen table. So many of these lace photos have never been seen before! There is a contest which requires you to make a moon. There is a lace showcase display. There will be a Tat-off (speed tatting competition.) Of course, there are the Annual Meeting (the reason for the convention), the Regional Meetings, and the Thread passing ceremony which is our way of transferring power from the old officers to the new officers. . Do you really just want to socialize with other lace people? We will have a series of Table Talks. There will be a theme/speaker but a limited number of people who can then chat on zoom as a small group. Since there will be no time to socialize during the so-called "Banquet", an opportunity for socializing is provided in a Cocktail Party. Are you confused as to what cocktail or mocktail you might want to drink at the Cocktail Party? Well, we are hoping to solve that problem forever by having a Quarantini Challenge. For this challenge you are invited to invent a lace themed cocktail. You can base it on a famous lace personality or historical event, feature an ingredient special to a lace region, allude to a lace style or technique, or decorate it with a lace theme.. The winner will be decided by popular choice and announced at the Cocktail Party. We will all toast "Lace" and then be randomly assigned to small breakout rooms for chatting for about 10-15 minutes in each period. I suppose we will go on with this until people lose interest and leave. Our plans are ambitious, but it is safe to say there will be plenty of "spontaneity". Some of the events are open to the public. But most of the events are for IOLI members only. Good news! A digital membership to the IOLI costs $30. https://sites.google.com/internationalorganizationoflace.org/ioliorganization/organization/membership The convention is free to members. For a $30 membership you will be able to experience lace fun continuously from July 25th to August 1st. Some of it will even be recorded for later viewing. Details are constantly evolving, but they can be found here https://sites.google.com/internationalorganizationoflace.org/uncon/uncon-2-0 Devon - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Hopefully the area will not be too noisy and we can do our usual introductions and raffle. I also asked for trash cans so we can clean up after ourselves. Looking forward to seeing you all soon. [lace] IOLI Bulletin Winter 2019 & Lace magazine news
I have been remiss in announcing the arrival of the Winter 2019 IOLI Bulletin. I got it a couple weeks ago, accompanied by the annual handbook. Also, on FaceBook, I saw a post by the Lace Guild that the current digital Lace magazine is now available. Better yet, in July of this year, the digital-only Early Days magazine will be available to members for just an additional $5. I've been curious about that publication, thinking it might be a help in teaching kids and newcomers. It’s a weird thing - but try checking on different days of the week. Honestly! Tuesday is a really good day to check. Does anyone have a list of proposed classes for next year? Usually there is a tentative lineup available at the current year’s event. Since I couldn’t attend this year, I didn’t pick one up. Nothing has been posted yet to the IOLI site. If you have one, please post it to Arachne Flickr for anyone who is planning ahead. Many thanks! [lace] IOLI Convention
We are home, safe and sound, after a Great week in San Antonio, Texas, -- although it was âMighty Hotâ â especially after leaving our very cold Aussie winter!! Thank you, Janice , for again organizing an Arachne Lunch, although a few people missed the announcement of the lunch venue and time. It was fun to meet up with other Arachnids, and meet face-to-face. The friendships made at these Conventions are Wonderful, and it is great to see there is still some good in the world, as all we seem to hear about are the bad things. [lace] IOLI Bulletin and Google Account
I got my paper version of the Bulletin at the weekend. After some nagging from my daughter, I finally decided to open a Google account if I could. Lin, your suggestion of having a separate gmail account for Bulletin access only would not work as the new email would be shown in the Handbook , and not the one I prefer to use. Anyway, I just tried to create a Google account to find that my jblace email is already in there. How did that happen, guess I must have done it years ago and totally forgot about it. I did change my password as suggested by Google. Now I am set up for the next Bulletin online. I presume I will receive an email with a link to the Bulletin when the time comes. I still want the paper version though. I might be back with questions if I can't access it. Sue, No, I doubt that the IOLI will make the handbook available online, even though it would only be accessible by those signed up for the Bulletin. If it can be downloaded, then it could be shared! Devon, This made me chuckle in the last digest, how many hands do you have. I had visions of a lacemaker with three or more hands. That would be helpful at times. Re: [lace] IOLI Handbook
Dear Susie,  Agreed. There is too much personal information in the Handbook for it to be accessed by computer, even by members.  Some people share computers with family (all ages and agendas), and some use computers at work or in libraries and schools. It is too easy to absent-mindedly leave a computer on when one leaves a desk, or even when traveling.  The printed handbook is indispensable for privately contacting other members, so serves a valuable function. Keep it in a safe place. SHRED, when it become obsolete.  "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."  As Susie said, everyone is able to refuse to have their information in the printed Handbook.  Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center -- In a message dated 7/16/2018 12:34:15 PM Eastern Standard Time, cjohnson0...@comcast.net writes:  Has anyone heard if the handbook is going to also be available on line. If I was to have a chance to vote...I would say no. Re: [lace] IOLI Bulletin
Further to Jane's email regarding The Lace Guild electronic membership, e-Lace is not sent as a pdf, there is an e-members only section of the website where the e-magazine is accessed. I would echo Jane's call for patterns, articles, photos etc., etc.; publications can't survive without them. One area we do often have a problem with is items for the Young Lacemaker magazine; while the readers may be young (mostly) they are not necessarily beginners. More challenging patterns with a 'trendy' (or whatever the current terminology is) theme and application are always welcome. Clare (no longer any connection to TLG Exec!) Re: [lace] IOLI Bulletin
We're just in the beginning stages of receiving the journal of the preserved railway where I volunteer in electronic format. What is being done there, and I suspect with The Lace Guild as well, is that the electronic pdf file that is sent to the printers is also the file that is being sent out to members by email. This is most likely the cheapest and simplest way of doing things, for those charitable organisations (like the railway and the Guild) that don't have funding to get an outside specialist company involved. With the railway's journal, being a pdf it gives me the option of using the up/down arrows to move to previous/next page, and typing the page number I want in the box, plus scrolling down (which isn't a great hardship!). The contents page at the start tells me which page I need for a specific article. Also, if I want to look for pieces about, say, a particular loco, I can use the control-f function (keyboard command for "find" - I'm using a Windows 10 laptop and! Adobe Acrobat Reader) to bring up a search box, into which I can type key words. Production of an "all bells and whistles" version would substantially increase the production cost, and would likely require those subscribing to pay more rather than less for their electronic magazine - which would defeat the object of trying to gain overseas members by making it affordable for them to subscribe to (the postal costs for paper copies make them anything but). Do remember that the newstand magazines that have electronic versions with all the navigation options have much larger circulation figures than our specialist magazines, and so have a much greater income to afford the staff and technology required. I'm not sure what the exchange rate is at the moment, but from the figures Susan quotes for the various subscriptions electronic membership of The Lace Guild, at £20.00 (GBP) per year, sounds like a bargain! However, for the magazines to continue in either format, the editors are (usually) dependent on members sending in patterns (for any type of lace, not just bobbin lace) and articles for publication, and the patterns submitted don't have to be as complicated as Miss Channer's mat - one of the reasons I started subscribing to the Canadian Lacemaker Gazette when I was teaching was that their patterns were frequently easy enough for a relative beginner to attempt, and being an affordable subscription, it was a lace publication I could recommend to my students. So many times you hear someone say their reason for not joining the Guild, or submitting a pattern (of their own design) is "I'm not good enough" - which in many cases certainly isn't true. Having patterns for beginners in the magazines is as important as having the more challenging ones for those of us who have been making lace for years, and even more so, if we are to encourage new lacemakers to subscribe in the first pl! ace! Hello All! Thanks Janice & others for your comments. Sorry I can’t answer your questions about Google. The digital edition is a great help for anyone with an overseas mailing address or multiple residences, so I congratulate IOLI leadership for providing this membership option at a very affordable $30. May I say even at $40 an IOLI membership with a paper copy of The Bulletin is a bargain! EGA USA (Embroiderers’ Guild) is now $50 & ANG (American Needlepoint Guild) is $45. [lace] IOLI Convention & Magazine
We are gearing up for our trip first to Texas and then on to Seattle to visit family! We get to San Antonio a couple of days early, to give us time to get over Jet-lag, so we will have a look around, Janice, to see if there is room for an Arachne lunch! I have already purchased a small gift to bring! And I have 6 small (4½ inch) fans for the display. They are in 6 different laces! I finished the tatted one recently. I am doing the afternoon Tatting class, so there is not a lot of equipment to bring â I just had to finish a couple of UFOs so I had empty shuttles ready for class!! At least it got me finishing things, rather than starting another UFO (I am good at that!! ð ) We are looking forward to the trip, - and thawing out a bit! It is mid winter over here, and very cold, (after a long very hot summer), and Texas should be nice and warm!! So we are searching out our summer clothes to bring! I, too, prefer the paper version of magazines. I get various Newsletters on the computer, but I hope the Magazines stay with a paper version, which can be pickled up at any time, where as this computer is shared, so I canât always access it, if DH is on it. I have the past magazines in holders here on the shelf, and I can go back to them whenever I want to â easily and without any fuss!! Regards from Liz. In reference to digitizing our own lace documents, it can be much easier than Lin’s process. There are many smart phone apps that create.pdf’s just by aiming your phone and clicking. I like Scannable and have the free version for iPhone. It straightens the document nicely. Can do separate pages or multiple page documents. Re: [lace] IOLI Bulletin
I’ve been reading the sample digital IOLI bulletin on my tablet (iPad) and am very glad they are offering that option. Tablets work much better for this than computers. The tablets, which originated as readers, automatically size the page so it fills the screen. You can enlarge the page to zoom in on details. I’ve got a number of digital Piecework magazines on my iPad. They have a couple features the Bulletin would benefit from. I can move from page to page by swiping left and the table of contents has links to take you directly to each article. With the Bulletin, it didn’t hold my place when I closed it and I had to page through to find where I left off. Nobody loses. The print edition is still available for those who prefer it. This new feature is a bonus for those of us who prefer it. Re: [lace] lace: IOLI Bulletin
just a thought. i have photographed pages (books and magazines) and then copied them into a Word document. because one can print from a PDF file, i have created them on a free PDF converter program on the internet. now i have digitized the item and can view it on my tablet/phone/computer at any time. i can zoom for viewing and print out from the tablet or cell. you might consider doing this. it is tedious, but i have managed to eliminate a lot of bulk and weight. enjoy. this also works for pages that i need for a project/class/trip when i travel because i can just take it on the tablet or cell and have access without having to remember to "pack" that info. this is helpful for directions (if you don't use a GPS application) too. I, for one, was thrilled to see the IOLI Bulletin being offered in digital version. Like most others I much prefer having a printed version, BUT, we are in the process of downsizing to much smaller space, so I simply do not have enough storage space for all the wonderful Bulletins. I hope at some point in the future the old Bulletins will be digitized, and there will be a nice digital index of articles and patterns, so they can be searched. However, since I am not able to do it, it is just wishful thinking. Re: [lace] IOLI Bulletin - Staying organized
Dear Lacemakers,  Is there a library collection anywhere in the world housing books and publications focused on both embroidery and lace that is more extensive than the one here?  How does that owner feel about this subject ?  In the case of this library in Maine USA, it is preferable to hold a magazine in the hand. The instructions received from the IOLI Bulletin Editor add more complexity, as you will read below.    My lace and embroidery library, now 4,075 books, is probably the most extensive private collection in the world for research on these subjects, especially valuable because the librarian here has read everything in English and is familiar with what else has been saved that is written in other languages. Though periodical publications have not been inventoried, a system recently began of storing bulletins of guilds / publishers (like PieceWork) in plastic bins - by organization. There are also bins holding obsolete publications. Contents are filed by date, with the most current at the top. They have their own designated room.  No one can countermand the owner, who belongs to about 12 guilds just to receive the bulletins (dues are a large expense).   Imagine having different access instructions for each and every item here ! Imagine changes every time editors / officers change and institute their preferences, or constantly having to adapt to new technologies.  When a book or magazine bibliography lists references used, my filing system is easy to use to find originals. Even if I had a volunteer (Ha Ha), there are other tasks of more value to do. An inventory, like the existing one of books, is of considerable value in helping to find the exact book needed. I fail to see the benefit of doing this with periodical publications, given the labor necessary to implement and constantly update. A storage system is the answer here.  Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center -- In a message dated 7/10/2018 9:39:44 PM Eastern Standard Time, jbl...@sbcglobal.net writes: I wrote about IOLI increasing dues to cover mailing and printing costs of the magazine and the new digital version at lower cost. I am also gathering bobbins. threads, etc. and preparing prickings classes at the IOLI convention. I've cleared a pillow to take with me. The more pillows I buy, the more unfinished projects I have! My classes are Flanders morning and afternoon with Kathy Kauffman, and Buttons and Braids with Gil Dye on Weds. I was so glad to get my first choice classes! I'm looking for a good lamp to use in class. The base can't be large but it should be stable. A clip-on lamp would work on my lace table. Any suggestions? I really hope that we will have an Arachne lunch or other gathering during the convention. Last year's lunch was so nice--thanks, Arlene! i hope to bring raffle gifts, too. Finally, I think I will opt for the printed IOLI magazine rather than the online version. I would probably want to print much of it and put it in binders, so paying a little more for the printed mag. makes sense to me. Depending upon the price I will probably pay for both the physical and digital copies for a year. Then I will decide which I prefer. I have a number of hobby books that I have gotten electronically and I like them a lot. I especially like being able to access them on my tablet and the ability to zoom in to a really close view. Several actually have instructional videos imbedded in the book which I love. I did have a digital subscription to a stamp magazine that did not work out as well. When I would try to zoom in to an area that was near the edge of the page the system would turn the page. I changed that to a physical subscription. As the list seems to be quiet, my last digest was #68 on July 1, and I know I sent a lengthy email about convention hoping it might kick out a new digest, I decided to write about the IOLI increasing the dues to cover mailing and printing costs of the magazine and the new digital version at lower cost. I, and all IOLI members with an email address, should have received an email from Prabha Ramakrishnan, the editor recently. Apart from increasing dues, they are making an online version of the Bulletin available at a lower cost or, if paying the full membership dues, you can get both versions. I was able to access the online one in the link from Prabha, but if I decided to go the digital route, I would need to have access through a Google account. I don't have a gmail email, so I am not sure how I would do that. What is a Google Account? I don't want a new email address and the FAQ's say I don't need to do that, but how would I access it? Checking out the magazine online, I think I have decided to pay the full amount when I renew in September as I prefer to have the paper version that I can flip through, leave at the side of my chair so I can pick it up whenever I want to check something. I don't like the fact that I can't read the screen if I am looking at the full pag! e of the magazine, and on my laptop I need to zoom in to read the details, and then I have to move the screen up and down. Re: [lace] IOLI Bulletin
My Lace arrived on Friday, and the IOLI magazine a couple of weeks or more ago. It was good to sit down and read it while I was trying to recover from pneumonia which has stopped me from going to England to the Lace Guild AGM which I’ll miss for the first time in about 20 years. I’m sure that the people in New Brunswick would be happy to send you some rain as they have severe flooding at the moment. Malvary in Ottawa where Spring has sprung at last. Thank you, Jean R. for mentioning the IOLI Bulletin. I have not received mine yet, and I havenât heard of any other Aussies who have received it, so I will mention it on the Aussie list, so they all can look out for it. It is good to know when these magazines come out, as the Postal Service here is dismal, and a couple of years ago some of us were missing 2 issues, - not realizing they should have arrived months ago! The UK Lace should be out soon, too, - shouldnât it? I believe the Aussie Lace Magazine is in the pipeline, - possibly at the printers, by now. Regards from Liz. Nancy Neff asked a question on Bobbin Lace Makers Facebook page about whether there will be a Facebook or Arachne gathering this year at convention. Do we have any local San Antonio members on Arachne? If so, please let us know who to contact about finding a meeting place for us. Last year was great with the locals arranging an area in the food court nearby. Thanks. Hooray!! My magazine arrived this morning. I have not had a chance to open it yet, - but I know I will have some good reading this evening, when I get time to sit and look though it!! I must learn to concentrate better â I mad a bad boo-boo with my tatting last evening, - and used the wrong colour in some Daisy Picots, and had gone on quite a way past them before I realized! [lace] IOLI Bulletin
I got my Fall Bulletin today so the magazine seems to be back on track for delivery times. Nice job from the new editor, Prabha Ramakrishnan. I may be biased as the cover has my winning needlelace kite necklace from the competition. I won first prize in the original design category. There are lots of photos from convention which brought back good memories from July, lots of reports from convention and several articles by new contributors. I love the fingerless mittens and, although I have no need of them in southern California, I might have a go at the pattern to use for a gift. Dear ladies, The Flax Museum in Kortrijk changed and renuwed in 2015. Please have a look at our lacetour programm for next year: www.woldlacecongressbrugge2018.be : click on "Lace tour"", then on "Kortrijk", click and you will find more information about the new Texture museum. It is now more focused on linen and the flax history and less on lace. But for next year they are planning to make a big lace exhibition again. Please consider to join us on the "lace tour" next year. So you can discover more exciting places. You will not regret it. I never saw the old museum but Vernon and I visited Texture on our way back from Krakovany earlier this year, it is an amazing place and well worth a visit. I am glad that people liked the article. Regarding the one about the Flax Museum. I know I took photos of this geneaology and now I canât find any of the photos from that visit to the Flax museum, although I have photos from other places that I visited on that same trip. It was about the time that I switched from film to digital, and yet I have digital of the other places. Very frustrating. I donât even know if the wonderful display is still up. I looked at some photos of the Flax museum and it seems it may be in a different building, or possibly remounted with newer museum techniques. RE: [lace] IOLI Magazines - a Review
Speaking of The Bulletin and travel articles by Devon Thein, yesterday I was reading an issue from Spring 2005. The Article "Flax Madness" was just as entertaining as the recent article. In 2005, Devon described a trip to the Nationaal Vlas, Kant & Linnenmuseum in Belgium. The part that really got my attention was mention of a "Genealogy of Lace". She said, "It was a massive family tree of laces, starting on the bottom with reticella and passementerie. Ribbons flowed from these origins connecting other laces to them. They were aligned horizontally according to the year." I wonder if, what with modern technology, that chart has been translated to electronic format or published in some form so it is available to those who are unable to drop into the Linnenmuseum for a visit? I'm sure a lot of work went into creating it. It would be such a shame if it was lost. Re: [lace] IOLI Magazines - a Review
Thanks to Liz in Australia for commenting on delivery of two very late IOLI Bulletins.  The second, the Summer 2017 IOLI Bulletin, features the new editor's work.  Thank you to Prabha Ramakrishnan.  Your editorship is much appreciated here in my lace research center.  The cover features a fancy work bag embellished with tatting.  I really liked the inside front cover that showed  photos from each article in the bulletin.  There is a lot of color in this issue, and it is printed on quality paper making photos a joy to examine under magnification.  The issue has a Battenberg lace heart pattern from Loretta Holzberger, a Cantu lace heart pattern from Lia Baumeister-Jonker, and a beginner bobbin lace heart pattern developed for a Young Lacemaker Program sponsored by the Minnesota Lace Society.  Any of these would make up into a nice Christmas lace Arachne card.  The last will be so quickly completed that a lace maker might like to make several to tie onto gifts and be used later as a small decoration.  Any of these can be tied around a button or sewn to a garment when you go out to demonstrate lace making.  Wear lace, please.  Jean Leader has provided a bobbin lace pattern to decorate the neckline of a dress.  This reminded of a class Devon and I attended at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in NYC decades ago, before Devon began to volunteer at the Metropolitan Museum and when I was still making lace.  The class was about how to make a collar to fit an existing dress, and was taught by the late Radmilla Zuman.  We often ask you to wear lace, as Liz in Australia does.  Why not use this idea to make lace to decorate something as simple as a tee shirt?  True treasures for me are always information that adds to documented lace history.  Devon has very masterfully described a Lace Study tour of Spain, where she and 9 traveling companions pursued a rare gold lace called Frisado de Valladolid.  So far, only 24 examples from about 3 centuries ago have been identified and documented.  Perhaps more will surface now that Frisado has become a focus of new study.  This fascinating 9 page article is amply illustrated with color photos.  It is followed by a lovely 3 page article about a two week lace tour of Sicily that Gil Dye took with a small group of retired academics and their wives.  Liz described the Randy Houtz tatting article.  There are additional subjects to single out for mention...  An article about lace stamp collecting, and an article about Mary Eliza Fitch who was an early 20th century American designer of tatting and crochet patterns.  The cover illustration comes from her design for a fancy work bag.  Ladies used to carry small in-progress fancy work in such bags when they visited each other.  Fancy needlework tools and thimbles some people collect today were developed for these leisurely social occasions.  There is a comprehensive bibliography, or search Mary Eliza Fitch tatting and crochet for more information and patterns.  If this Summer 2017 issue is an indication of what is to come from Prabha, then the Editorship is in very good hands.  There are lace lovers whose only connection to IOLI is the quarterly bulletin.  Hopefully, this will encourage them to renew membership and to share lace within their local communities.   Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center   - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Hooray, - and Wow! The postie delivered the IOLI Bulletins this morning â Yes, Plural â there were 2 of them!! Spring and Summer editions, - so I have Lots of interesting reading for tonight! I have had a very quick flip though â and see there are Tatting patterns by the Shuttle Brothers. Great! I love their patterns as they flow on through the whole piece â very few, if any stops and starts till the end! Like the round mat in the previous Bulletin, I think only the last round was âseparateâ â all the others were worked continuously. So now my âTo Doâ list has grown somewhat Well, I am off to Launceston, Tasmania, on Saturday for a week of Lacemaking at the Australian Lace Guildâs Annual Convention, (where I am teaching needlelace) so I may get some tatting going while on the plane! Yesterday I was demonstrating bobbin lace at a local Pioneer Cottage. I was working on an Early Lace, - and had another early lace piece aro8und the collar of my blouse â a pattern out of the Rosemary shepherd book â that was probably (to my eyes, anyway) an edge for an Elizabethan ruff. â so I had to put it around a collar â didnât I?!! The weather was kind, and Lots of families came out to visit, so it was very busy â but fun. I have been demonstrating lacemaking there at their Open Days for about 25 years I think! Thanks Arlene! We definitely have some dedicated shutterbugs among us. Between Arlene's pics on Flickr & Devon's on IOLI FaceBook, everyone can see what a good time was had by all. Prabha R., our new Bulletin editor also took many photos so they will surely appear in an upcoming issue. She was in Lauran Sundin's wire lace class so I got to meet her. She definitely has a plan to get caught up on the issues so we are good to go. For 2018 in San Antonio, we received a Teacher/Class List. OMG--goodies galore! I scanned my copy & posted it to Flickr. [lace] IOLI Convention
In answer to Jeri's plea, I finally received the digest in which Arlene's and Susan's reports arrived. Arlene is featured first, so Susan was second to get her report in, and finally having some time after dealing with laundry and putting away all my lace goodies, I am sending my report. I want to thank Arlene for all she did for the Arachne lunch. She arranged for the tables to be put together and had the Arachne name on stands on each group of tables. She put out the photocopies of the book from the Arizona site, each in a plastic file holder so they did not get spoilt by the food we placed on top. Her raffle was very well organized and I say this, not because my name was drawn early in the proceedings, but everyone went home with a prize. Liz arrived just as we were packing up but she was able to go home with something as well. It was great to see so many Arachne members at the lunch. I took the morning Lier class and worked on it during the afternoon in my room. The maid, who was from Haiti, liked to watch me work and although it was difficult to understand her, she was familia with tambour work. One question I have, does anyone know what type of starch should be used to stiffen a piece that is going to be a pendant, and is there something suitable in the US? I usually use strong hold perfume free hair spray but I don't think that will be firm enough. Greet mentioned "dab" or "dip" but I haven't found anything by those names in a search online. None of the vendors had starch to my knowledge. I enjoyed the whole week and I think we were overwhelmed with goodies at the meals. Those items that I will not keep will be passed on to my guild members. The meals were all good and the entertainment at the banquet was very lively. Being old, I was able to sing along with the band as I remember many of the songs from when I was a girl from radio. I was genuinely surprised to receive the first prize for the original design for my small, simple needlelace necklace. There were many entries in the competitions this year and I breathed a sigh of relief when the tatted necklace I had admired all week turned out to win the Doris Southward award for professional lacemakers. I thought that would win but had not noticed which category it was in. My room mate and I did our own tour on Wednesday to downtown Philadelphia. We caught the bus outside the hotel and the drivers in both directions allowed us to ride free as we are seniors even though we did not have a PA pass. We saw the Liberty Bell close up, the house where the Declaration of Independence was drafted by Thomas Jefferson and the house where Betsy Ross sewed the flag, and a number of other sights. We ate lunch at Reading Market which was a great place for people watching. Although it was hot, we walked in the shade of the tall buildings and all the places we visited were air conditioned, so we survived and had a good day. Next year convention will be in San Antonio, Texas the last week of July. The fan style invitation quotes it will be "hotter than a jalapeño". The following year, 2019, will be in Walla Walla, Washington. That is just north of the Oregon border in the eastern part of Washington state. Should be an interesting journey getting there. [lace] IOLI convention musings
This year my husband tagged along with me to the IOLI convention in order to spend a couple of days before the convention in Boston visiting our daughter. I warned him I would be busy with activities throughout the week so he needed to make plans to keep himself amused. He visited Valley Forge park twice, a train museum and Winterthur Museum on Friday. I carved out time Tuesday to go to dinner with him and 3 ladies came along too. (The benefit of having a car!) I also was able to take Wednesday off from the convention and we saw some sights in downtown Philly including the Liberty Bell, Indpendance Hall, the Mint and Ben Franklin wandering the street near his gravesite. This year convention was extra busy for me as it was my first time as the IOLI Supply chair and responsible for making sure our IOLI table in the vending room was staffed and had the money pouch. Molly Heller, the Membership Chair, and I have some ideas about improving things for next year. Alas, I only passed by the exhibit room twice and never made it inside to see the beautiful items. Luckily the contest items were on display at the banquet. This Saturday I will have a leisurely look at the People's Choice winning piece as it was done by our guild's own Sally Olsen. This year my morning class was Milanese with Louise Colgan and thoroughly enjoyed working on an adorable hedgehog design. I hope to finish it up yet this week. My afternoons were spent reacquainting myself with Chantilly in Ulrike Voehlker's class. Since I will likely be flying to San Antonio next year I will stick with one technique for the week and not two! But which? It was nice to once again have delightful table favors at each meal! I need to dig through my bag to see what all we got! Sunday we received handmade lace earring which I wore to the Monday dinner. I believe the "pearls" were in our nice blue registration totes, both gifts from the host group. At the banquet we each received a beautiful wooden pin box. It took some of us a little more time than others to figure out how to open it! lol My thanks to the Media gals who provided daily photo updates on the Facebook page. And thanks to fellow Arachnids for their reports here! Thanks also go to Arlene for organizing our lunch! What a great turnout! Re: [lace] IOLI Convention
Dear Devon, You did not receive the Arlene Cohen memo, even on your gmail account. I did not receive it on my aol account. Further, though a wonderful 7/23/17 account of the IOLI convention from Susan Hottle to Arachne was received as new mail, I could not find it in the Arachne archive earlier this morning, or now. Refreshed the page, but that did not result in any change. Puzzling why some things are archived on Arachne, and others are not. Devon, perhaps you could post the 2017 photo of the Arachne meeting on our Flickr. But, Lorelei was thanked by Loretta Holzberger, IOLI Vice President and chairman of the Media Committee for her work on the LaceIOLI Ning site. Since I was documenting everything for the International Organization of Laceâs facebook page, I zapped a photo to Lorelei of her being thanked, although in retrospect, I donât know that I made it clear what the photo signified. Re: [lace] IOLI convention news
Right again! I was just saying to a friend that it would be Susan Hottle who would be the first to share her experiences at the IOLI Convention. Should have put money on the prediction. Where are all of you who have been so helped here on Arachne? Some additional feedback would be lovely. It is unfair for Susan to be expected to bring us the only "news" report. A few of us who know a lot about lace and some about computer "diseases" have been repeatedly warned about FaceBook's security lapses. We do not subscribe and are unlikely to do so. In my 80th year, I have no intention of being painted into a corner - to join. Members expect IOLI's Bulletins to fulfill the responsibility of bringing printed news to us, and I hope the new Editor will receive a lot of help. This is an unpaid volunteer position (and Editors are the ones who usually do the lion's share of work for any guild). Thank Heaven a volunteer for this critical position has come forward, because the need has been great and this is the permanent way IOLI documents its history from year-to-year. For those who do not attend conventions, the Bulletin is often the only contact they have with IOLI. My pleas for help in bringing the lace of today to the world always fall on deaf ears (witness the dearth of sharing on Arachne). Please help the new Editor to keep the IOLI bulletin in print. This is not a one-person job, and "letting someone else do it all" will not guarantee success. Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center In a message dated 7/23/2017 1:35:46 P.M. What an invigorating, whirlwind week! The classes were great & everyone was pleased with their choices. Lovely earrings, strand of pearls & serenading Mummers were just a few of our perks. IOLI generously donated packets of back issues of the Bulletin so I was able to return home with additional useful resources for my chapter. Win-win & a big thank you to IOLI! Arlene did a great job organizing our Arachne luncheon & it was very well attended. Jean Leader modeled her famous black lace tie so we all got to admire it. The lace display room was astounding--so many competition pieces plus others on exhibit. Betty MacDonald had a section all to herself--multiple pieces including Starry Night & one that had rain pelting a barefoot duck wearing a mac. Whimsical & very effective. Teachers' Showcase was overwhelming--metallic lace bowls, tree ring inspired lace, avant garde Slovakian lace, Karen Thompson's Ipswich samples, Jane Atkinson's thistle scarf with tufts & the li! st went on. Devon posted a large number of photos to IOLI FaceBook so you can get an idea. Devon's lace exhibit proposal has been accepted by a museum in NJ & we got to see her presentation. Funding is needed so if you can help or have ideas, I'm sure they would be welcome. The vendors were over the top. OMG--who doesn't love petting new threads, yarn, bobbins & books? If you didn't attend, please be sure to ask your friends what they liked most. There was literally something to love around each corner! The topic is Just for Nice: The use of Lace in Pennsylvania German Textiles. Here is the blurb she provided: Just for Nice: The Use of Lace in Pennsylvania German Textiles The Pennsylvania Germans are known for practicality, but did love embellishment. Whether it be painted furniture, the vibrant decorated manuscripts called fraktur or samplers and embroidered linens, the rural Germans who came to Pennsylvania in the 18th century enjoyed what adding decoration âjust for nice.â What role did lace, and needlework resembling lace, have in the culture? [lace] IOLI Convention - Arachne Lunch
Dear Arlene, I am testing to see if you receive a copy of this letter from me directly, as well as a cc from Arachne. That would be 2 copies in your mail. I did not receive your original posting of the Arachne gathering, though I found it in the Arachne archive because Jane wrote to Arachne.. AOL and Yahoo are not on speaking terms, and that may be the answer. Just another example of how important it is for someone using an ISP other than those 2 to write a reply via Arachne, as Jane did. Jane, thank you. Perhaps other people had my experience, and will be at the Convention. Now they know to write to Arlene (address attached in a trimmed message from her). I will not be at convention. There were no needlelace classes, and no class that I would call "educational" (like Lace ID). I can manage an educational or needlelace class without having to go back to beginning bobbin lace and spending time practicing for a one-time class experience and unfinished lace to add to all the other unfinished lace examples being given shelf space here. I prefer a class experience that I can share later with Arachne and 9 other lace groups to which I belong. Add 2 embroidery guild memberships, and you can imagine what fun it is to receive newsletters and magazines from all these sources. Thank you, Arlene, for bringing our Arachne members together at the IOLI Convention. Everyone will have a lot of fun meeting each other. [lace] IOLI Convention - Arachne lunch
Hello, all - As mentioned in a previous message, I am working on organizing a gathering for any interested Arachne members at the IOLI Convention in July. This will happen during the lunch time on Tuesday of that week In considering options for where we should gather for lunch, it would be really helpful to get at least some sense of how many might be there - a group of 10 is very different than a group of 30 :-)  Please email me if you are interested in coming.  You are not committing yourself to anything if something comes up - I just need some sense of numbers. I know many probably read my last message (or the message in the digest when it showed up) and thought, "oh, yes, I need to email her" and then promptly forgot.  :-)  Trust me, I've organized enough things this way in my life to know that it takes a few reminder postings by me to get folks to respond.  I sent a reply email to everyone I received an email from.  If for some reason you emailed me and did not get a response back from me, please do try again.  I'm also a little concerned that my message did not show up in the Archives.  (Something I've noticed in the past - my messages sometimes show up in the Archives and sometimes do not and I always use the lace@arachne.com address and not the one that I know we are not supposed to use.) Also, if anyone can give any suggestions on how to avoid random gobble-goock (i.e. extra characters, etc.) from showing up where I've typed spaces and returns in my messages (as what came through last time), I would appreciate it!  I've tried looking for a "plain text" option here on Yahoo Message and can't find anything.  This doesn't happen when I use this email for anything else. Looking forward to hearing from many of you and seeing/meeting many of you in July!Arlene in njabcohen1...@yahoo.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] IOLI Display/Lace stands/Arachne Convention Get Together
Photos do not come through on Arachne, or maybe that is only on the digest form so all I saw were lots of error messages. Regarding the IOLI Display, I had trouble getting through on the link on the website for IOLI convention but eventually I managed to find this address to send display information to:2017convlocaldisp...@internationalorganizationoflace.org Try writing to  Laura Friezel at the above email address. Do we have any members of Arachne that are in the local Co-Host Group at Liberty Lacers?  If so, maybe they can tell us if there is anywhere local or in the hotel where we can meet this year.  Last year we had about 30 Arachne attend our get together at the mall food court.Janice Janice Blair Murrieta, CA, jblace.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] IOLI Convention
When I was flying to take a Lier class, I had the same dilemma. I ended up with a simple, but spendy, solution. I took two of the larger (10 x 15) Instand tables with the foldup tripod legs. I put one on each side of my frame, and the middle was completely open for working. The Instand tables will even slant if a person desires, and adjust in height for different chairs. Since the stands are metal, the suitcase weighs a bit more so I had to watch that. I put the tables and legs on top in my suitcase so the TSA could readily see what was blocking the xray without going through all my things. These tables are in frequent use for demos and exhibits. They have been a good investment. [lace] IOLI summer bulletin
Since I raised the question of when we should expect it - the Summer 2016 bulletin was in my mail on Saturday. Most members would not understand this concern, but librarians would. Every issue is in my lace research library, and once in the past the dates/volume numbers got all mixed up on the covers of the Bulletins because of some internal upheaval. It will be confusing in the future for someone to "work out that old 20th C. problem" when organizing them. Was concerned we could have a similar situaton in 2016. Thanks to all who responded from different locations around the U.S. Best wishes to the Editor, and thanks to those who may have helped to get the bulletin to us.
