This may sound odd, but I wish I had been around in the days when Doris
Southard was teaching at the IOLI conventions! By the time I met Doris in
2002(2) she was 80+ years old and no longer teaching. I do have a photo of
her working on her pillow but didn't have an opportunity to spend much time
watching her make lace. I think it would have been wonderful to have taken a
Tonder class from her! I imagine there are still some lucky people out there
that did have that pleasure!

Speaking of Miss Channer I think it is a safe bet that one of our member's
will be displaying her completed mat in the exhibit room at the IOLI
convention this year!
See you soon!!!

Frequently, it is the person who has studied the language formally who
understands it better than the native speaker!

I agree with this comment. As a native speaker I am not always aware of all
the rules of spelling and grammar as someone who has studied it can be. As a
teacher and author writing about lace subjects I am well aware of the
pitfalls, so are my proof readers including Aurelia herself. I would never
have finished revamping my dictionary without her. She was always picking me
up, and making pointed comments using misinterpretation that had me in
stitches and enlivened my mornings.

When I wrote my dictionary of lacemaking terms I was often asked which was the
correct term when there were several. In my opinion it is not about which is
the correct term. To me words are tools by which we pass on and receive
ideas. What matters is that both the sender and receiver have the same
understanding of the word or phrase. The English language is wide open to
misinterpretation, hence the wonderful episodes when Shakespeare has his
actors playing with them and Aurelia made fun of what would otherwise have
been tedious. As an author and teacher I have to do my best to guard against
misinterpretation, and I use several lacemakers to proofread and try out my
explanations. My thanks to all my helpers. Hopefully we succeed.

Happy lacemaking

2011-08-16 Thread Witchy Woman

Read the posts about storing used prickings. Lots of good information.

I, too, like to keep them in the book the pattern came from if possible. I
keep them in plastic page protectors...cut to fit the book if need
be...keeps them from falling out when you open the book.

I've found out the hard way that the ink from regular ball point pens like
Bic tends to fade as the years go by so I make notes in an indelible ink...a
Pentel brand Onyx pen is a good one...fine lines and inexpensive.

If you're going to make any markings on the pricking before you cover it
with clear contact film, a pencil works well. Inks of all kinds seem to
bleed into the contact film after a while.

BTW...if you use the plastic page protectors to store your notes and
prickings, make sure they're made of polypropylene, which is chemically
inert.

Each piece of the pattern is actually a graphics file and can be copied. To
get the pattern to fit on a page is to do this...

1. Open a screen in Word. Set the page size to Legal and all margins to
0.5.

2. Go to the screen with the pattern. Put your cursor on one section of the
pattern and right click. Select Copy.

3. Go back to the Word screen and select Paste (or hold the CTRL key down and
hit V to paste). It will automatically fit the pattern to the page.

4. Repeat with each section of the pattern.

Enjoy!

Subject: Re: [lace] bobbins... and now, teaching?

2010-09-27 Thread Janice Blair
I bought the dowel and some long wooden beads years ago with the intent of
using
it to make long bobbins for doing yarn lace. It is on my "someday" list.

Teaching - well my guild is having it's third class this year for beginners in
November and without any advertising we already have 9 people on the list! The
first class earlier in the year was a success with some new members and the
followup "continuing" class also included 5 new beginners, 4 of which joined
the
guild. Now we have decided to offer a class on a special day rather than eat
into our guild meeting days. I came up with a new simple pattern this time
that
should be able to be completed easily in the 4 hours this class will have, and
that will include them doing some winding of bobbins and pricking the pattern.
Our guild members help out by sitting alongside the newbies, one-on-one if
possible, and this takes the burden off the person running the class of being
everywhere all at the same time. I am concerned that if we keep growing at
this
rate, we will outgrow our meeting room which is very convenient and economical
for us at present.

I developed an easy bookmark pattern, just uploaded it to the second page of my
arachne webshots album:

http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/album/149126673AmIpMo?start=0

If anyone wants a to proof read my class notes and get the pattern, email me.
The piece uses 7 pairs of bobbins and 35/2 linen thread.

Hi Janice and everyone

Duct tape?

At Sally's Binche workshop this summer (at IOLI) I learned to colour in
sections of my diagram-copy with the colours of the Belgian code, as
approriate. V. helpful as an aide memoire. At home now I colour in the
pricking as well (I need all the aide memoire I can get :p )

I use what someone called a voodoo board to pin where I am, the diagram-copy
on a piece of styro, or if the styro isn't available, I just pin into a
double layer of paper and *as well* I use Clay's tip of removeable arrows in
several colours to locate where I need to be at a given section.

The thing about Binche and Flanders in the areas of motif, is the passive
can become weaver any place necessary to help fill the space; an outline
thread helps define or perhaps corral is a better word, corral the
passive/weaver movements within the shape.
For Lorelei - there are areas of a given pattern that repeat a pathway to
fill in a shape, but we don't have stitch distinctions for the cloth stitch
areas as such, you just use what works to fill in the space and have the
pairs entering and leaving in a logical manner to the lace as a whole, for
any given pattern.

To learn Binche is to dive right in, eyes to the diagram :D

I think we're all on the same wavelength with wire - it is the silver clay
'cord' that gives us a headache, if we try to make 'lace' with it! Of course
it was never intended for lacemaking ;)
Somebody, somewhere, might be able to create lace in silver clay cords. I
like the silver clay pendants I made, with a lace-like impression on the
surface.

Francis,
Working with wire is quite fun. You use the same patterns and can use
the same bobbins to work in wire. Certainly handling wire and fiber thread
are different, but it just takes a small adjustment. It is not always easy
to find someone to teach wire lace. The links I provided the other day
would be a good start. Susan Lambiris is teaching beginning wire lace at
the IOLI convention this summer. I think the difficulties brought up
related more to the clay than to actual wire. Since we can work bobbin lace
in wire fairly easily, I would not be inclined to work with the clay for
this purpose.. I do hear, however, that it is great for some applications
such as findings.

I think there are better ways to make silver wire lace! I'm sure that was
the original question, wanting more information about wire lace,
particularly regarding the Estonian wire lace artist.

I have seen nice examples made in porcelain clay, that resemble lace.

The topic is about wire lace and went off on a tangent with the silver clay

There is a workshop on PMC Silver Jewelry scheduled for August 8th – 10th
through Great Escapes Weekend in the UK. And although it’s been a few years
since I attended one of their weekend workshops, I’m sure that this one will
be just as delightful.

I think this might be called PMC, which stands for precious metal clay. I

met someone in a metal weaving class who makes jewelry this way.

Subject: Re: [lace] survey of storage of lace pillows!!

2004-07-17 Thread Thodedm
I'm not really sure how many pillows I have. I think maybe 10 or 12. These
are mine. DH has 3 or 4 or his own. I do have many of them on a nice rack
with a cover. Bought the rack made the cover to keep the cat kids out of the
pillows. Pillows are good sleeping places if mom lets them! :)

Work in progress in some lace for a new communion ware cover for church and
wedding garters for all three grandchildren. Decided to make garters and put
them away as the older gkids are in their 20's already. Will probably also
make hankies in the future. Also have a dimensional Christmas angel on the
travel pillow and a try pillow with a snake on it.

Just finished a baby gift of a fleece snuggle and an afgan. Shower was
lovely even if I was so full of pain medication I was spacey. (DH says I always
am) Have 2 more chemo treatments and hopefully I'm done then.

Spare a thought for us poor Brits. It'll be at least another fortnight
before I get my copy of the Bulletin.
