[lace-chat] Happy Halloween!

2012-10-31 Thread pene piip

Dear fellow Arachneans,
I hope that those lacemakers celebrating Halloween today will have lots
of fun & not eat too much candy.

I am so glad that I don't have to scoop out pumpkin seeds & carve scary
faces any more.

I'd rather be making lace than carving a pumpkin face!

[lace-chat] Soup & Stew enhancer

2012-01-23 Thread pene piip

Dear fellow Arachneans,

Until recently I would usually throw out the vinegar mix leftover from
the jar of pickled cucumbers.
I prefer the picnic or bread & better variety. Lately once the pickles
are eaten, I've sliced up a fresh
cucumber & reused the mixture by adding a little fresh vinegar. On
Sunday evening I was making soup with some basic vegetables & a chunk of
ham, & decided to throw in the dregs of the pickled cucumbers.
I added some pasta to fill up my guys, & my soup with mustard seeds was
quite deliciously different.

My guys like green olives on pizza! So I had also discovered a while ago
that I could add the vinegar

from the can of green olives to tenderize the tougher cuts of meat.
I thought I'd share these ideas with my fellow chefs/cooks.

Warm regards from

[lace-chat] Hansa Days in Tartu

2010-07-18 Thread pene piip

Tartu is celebrating Hansa Days this weekend, but yesterday I was busy
cleaning our attic guest room. We are providing bed & breakfast for a
German student who is attending a 2 week-long course at the Tartu
University Language School learning Estonian before he returns in

September.

After dinner last night I went for a wander in the town to have a look
see - lots of people selling jewellery!
A couple of old friends saw me first, & then I met another new Chinese
friend, & then I spotted a young Aussie guy from Albury, NSW whom I met
3 weeks ago. This time his Estonian girlfriend was with him. After that
I bought a lemon gelato from our favourite pizza place & half a kilo of
beans from a vegetable vendor that hadn't packed up & wandered home a
different way than usual.

Today is Clay Blackwell's birthday, so send her an e-mail.

Have a good week everyone,

Any ex-pat will understand what I mean - you walk into a supermarket
(& here in Tartu there are 7 different chains to choose from) & when you
expect to find something in one section, it is in another part of the store.

But in all these supermarkets you will find canned fish (eg tuna fish) not
with the canned vegetables like I was used to in Massachusetts, USA,
but kept in the refrigerated section with all other seafood & fish items.
In my mind anything that is canned does not need to be kept cold.

I would like to know if this is common in other European countries?

[lace-chat] Do you want to be a Mermaid or a Whale?

2009-07-14 Thread pene piip
I wish to share this little story with my on-line friends & I hope that
it gives everyone a good chuckle.

Hugs from Pene in Tartu, Estonia

Recently, in large French city, a poster featuring a young, thin and tan
woman appeared in the window of a gym. It said:

¨THIS SUMMER DO YOU WANT TO BE A MERMAID OR A WHALE?¨

A middle aged woman, whose physical characteristics did not match those
of the woman on the poster, responded publicly to the question posed by
the gym.

To Whom It May Concern:

Whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, sea lions, curious
humans).
They have an active sex life, they get pregnant and have adorable baby
whales.

They have a wonderful time with dolphins stuffing themselves with shrimp.
They play and swim in the seas, seeing wonderful places like Patagonia,
the Bering Sea and the coral reefs of Polynesia.

Whales are wonderful singers and have even recorded CDs.
They are incredible creatures and virtually have no predators other than
humans.

They are loved, protected and admired by almost everyone in the world.

Mermaids don’t exist. If they did exist, they would be lining up outside
the offices of Argentinean psychoanalysts due to identity crisis. Fish
or human? They don’t have a sex life because they kill men who get close
to them not to mention how could they have sex? Therefore they do not
have kids either. Not to mention who wants to get close to a girl who
smells like a fish store?

The choice is perfectly clear to me; I want to be a whale.

I've been knitting recently also. I like to do something in the evenings

[lace-chat] Re: Injured Lacemaker

2007-08-10 Thread pene piip

Thank you, all fellow Aracheans, for your kind thoughts & wishes
of a quick recovery for my broken ankle. I wasn't chasing anyone,
Helen, just having a bicycle ride with my youngest son, who had
celebrated his 15th birthday the day before. I had to stop suddenly
so I wouldn't hit a parked car & the bike tipped over. It could have
been worse for me but my helmet made contact with the pavement
instead of my head. When I sat up I then realized that my right ankle
was hurting a lot & was swelling up very quickly. A local man phoned
for an ambulance which took me to the hospital where my leg was
x-rayed as they thought my knee might have been injured as well.
A fracture was diagnosed but due to some cartilage damage surgery
was needed to insert a plate with screws. There was a long wait as I
wasn't taken into the operating theatre until 23:00. I used the time in
the hospital to read the new Harry Potter book & finish knitting a pair
of socks for DH. I wanted to learn how to knit socks with circular
needles & from the 'toe up', which I think is much easier than from
the 'top down' method.

So, yes, I have nearly finished the length of lace for the front of the
blouse. Some bobbins were running out of thread quicker than I
expected, so I've decided to make 2 separate pieces for the front
& back of the American teacher's linen blouse.

And yesterday, DH came home with a parcel he picked up from the
Post Office, filled with some wonderful goodies from my lace friend
Laurie Hughes, who attended the IOLI Convention last week. You
really know how to cheer up an "injured lacemaker" who will be on
crutches for another 5 weeks, Laurie! I will be getting the stitches
removed tomorrow & hopefully my foot will return to its normal size
in a few more weeks. I'm just glad that it is summer & I can wear my
Teva sandals!!

BTW An American exchange teacher from Brooklyn, NY, is arriving
in Estonia next week to teach English in a small town named Antsla,
which is about 2 hours south of Tartu, closer to the Latvian border. I
hope to meet her when she comes thru Tartu on her way to Antsla.

Thank you, again, for all your thoughtful e-mails.

[lace-chat] Lacemaking in Literature

2007-05-09 Thread pene piip

It is strange sometimes how coincidences run through our lives.

Because I read a comment on a food blogger's web-site about
a novel concerning 4 generations of women from a Polish-American
family, I was happy to find a copy of Leslie Pietrzyk's "Pears on a
Willow Tree" in the Tartu University Library. :-)

What a surprise to find in the 5th chapter called "Wedding Day" several
references to bobbin lace. One sentence I liked was:
"The bobbins clattered gently, sounding like people talking in another
room."

Has anyone else read this book?

And another strange coincidence was that if I hadn't asked other lacemakers
in Tartu to make luggage tags for the UK Lace Guild census, Pat Matthews
wouldn't have come to Estonia & written a report which is in the Lace 126.

[lace-chat] Missing book from library

2006-10-07 Thread Pene Piip

It is raining here in Tartu & I'm stuck at home on antibiotics for
Whooping Cough which I caught from my eldest son. I found
out on Thursday night that 3 American students from Texas
came here in July to help with "English Camp" & when they
got home were diagnosed with this infectious disease. It is
hard to know that you have caught it, as it starts as a cold
but the cough just doesn't go away & slowly gets worse.

Anyway, I've just read "Bella Tuscany" by Frances Mayes &
loved it. I borrowed it from the Tartu City Library, but I'm very
disappointed that the first book "Under a Tuscan Sun" is not
in the catalogue. Interestingly both books have been translated
into the Estonian language.

Does anyone have the first book, & doesn't want it any more, &
would be willing to donate it to a library? E-mail me privately.

Meanwhile, I'm going back to bed to read a novel that Frances
Mayes wrote.

[lace-chat] Hedgehogs & Instrumental Music

2006-09-22 Thread Pene Piip

I know this isn't about "lace", but it is about hedgehogs.

I found a CD produced by a group of musicians in Indianapolis.
The Latvian & Estonian folk music is played on traditional folk
instruments. There is nearly 67 minutes of music which you
can listen to while you make lace. There is a web-site for more
information & where you can download 2 tunes to listen to:

[lace-chat] First, Given or Christian Names

2006-08-29 Thread Pene Piip
This morning I was lent a copy of Elizabeth David's book about
Mediterranean cookery & after reading the foreword written by Clarissa
Dicksson-Wright, looked her up in Wikipedia. The web-page says that she was
given 11 names when she was born. Check it out:

I know someone wrote that she preferred to say "Christian" name instead of
"given" or "first" name, but this is done today because there a lot of
people who belong to other religions, or none at all.

What I don't like is a child calling their mother & father by their first
names. I can understand children using their step-parent's first names, but
I feel that it shows a lack of respect & sounds strange not to hear
"Mom/Mum" or "Dad". Here in Estonia the honorific of "uncle" & "aunt" are
used quite a lot by young children.

[lace-chat] Lace Exhibit & workshop in Pärnu (long)

2006-07-21 Thread Pene Piip

Dear gentle spiders,

I had been looking forward to this week & now it has gone by so fast, but
it has been truly wonderful.

I arrived in Pärnu on Sunday & found my accommodation - a dormitory room
with spartan bathroom facilities, but cheaper than a hotel. On Monday
morning I had a small breakfast & wandered around the city center, learning
the street names & obtained a "This Week in Pärnu" booklet from the Tourist
Information center. Inside was listed everything going on in town from June
until August - but sadly no mention of the lace exhibition at all. But I
found an advert for a linen shop which I went looking for. For some reason
the shop was shut when I located it & when I started walking away my name
was called out. There was Kristiina & Priit Halberg with Marianne Stang
walking towards me, heading for the shop also. I received hugs from
everyone & then we decided to adjourn to a cafe since the linen shop was
closed. We chatted about many different topics & at 11am I excused myself
so that I could return to my room to change for the noon opening of the
exhibition.

The bus from Tartu arrived at 11:35 & I met Katre Kelder who lives & works
in Tallinn, but her family lives in Tartu. She had spent the weekend in
Tartu, demonstrating with me & other local lacemakers at the Hansa Days
festival. Her English is very good & she shared my room. We found that we
shared many likes & dislikes besides also having red hair.

The exhibition was titled as an International Lace Exhibit because there
were lace & lacemakers from Latvia, Sweden, Finland & Germany. There was
even a Bucks point ground bookmark made by Patricia Alba also on display
representing England. After the opening speeches were made, we were
entertained by a group of 5 singing girls & 2 boys sang solos. I then took
the opportunity to introduce myself to Birgitta Hulterström & Kristina
Malmberg. There was a display of Birgitta's modern lace outside the main
room & Kristina had brought 2 books that she had written about the lace
made by the Swedish lacemakers that were living on the Estonian island of
Ruhnu in the Gulf of Riga & also on the Pakri Islands near Paldiski, west
of Tallinn. The inhabitants were deported in 1940 by the Russians so that
military bases could be set up there.

I joined Katre & her friends from Tallinn for lunch & then Marianne's
workshop started at 2.00 pm. For most of the Estonian lacemakers learning
about "tulle" lace was not for them. The notes we were given was titled
"Liebenauer Point de Lille-Spitze". Marianne was very patient with a very
big class, making sure that we all had the right thread, pins, bobbins, &
pillows to make this point ground lace. By mistake I had prepared the
sampler pricking for the thicker thread & not the finer thread that my
bobbins were wound with. On Tuesday morning I found I had a problem with
the ground that I couldn't fix without undoing what I had made. So I
decided to undo it completely & prepare the correct pricking for the 2nd
pattern which was a narrower edging. By the time I had retro-laced my work,
Nina Drigoris had finished her sampler piece which she had made on her
beautiful Christina pillow. I admired her work & asked Nina, who was a
visiting lacemaker from Sweden, if she knew that her name was the Estonian
word for 'nose'. She didn't know that fact but would remember it. I also
asked if she had attended the lace school in Vadstena & if she had met
Linda Sheff from Massachusetts who had visited me in July last year. She
said that she did remember Linda. Later we exchanged contact information
before she & her family headed off to Latvia for a family vacation.

I enjoyed eating lunch with Marianne in the Jazz Cafe nearby & she
introduced me to Hedvig Seger who was from Finland. Later I met her friend
Mia. Hedvig showed us some linen fabric that she had bought from the linen
shop. After we ate we also had a quick look in the linen shop just up the
road before we returned to the classroom. During our lesson time it was
interesting to listen to all the languages being spoken. Marianne spoke in
German, English or French, & the Estonians spoke either German or English.
I met Aili Kuldkepp who lives & works as a librarian & language teacher in
Rapla (50 km south of Tallinn). She asked me about our little group in
Tartu. She would like to have more time for making lace during the school
year & is considering catching the bus to Tartu, maybe once a month.

After 6pm the exhibition was officially closed, the visiting lacemakers
were thanked & given gifts, & the prizes were presented to the winners. The
competition title was "Plant" so that the lace could be flowers, leaves,
trees, etc. Lia Looga from Tartu won the competition with an orchid that
she had made with metallic threads. The front doors were locked & then
everyone helped dismantle the display.

Katre & I had Chinese food for dinner, then walked down to the

[lace-chat] Vacation time

2006-07-16 Thread Pene Piip
I'm not unsubscribing as I'd like to read the digests when I return after
my little 3-day get away.

This afternoon I'll be heading to the west coast of Estonia, to the summer
capital of Pärnu. I'll be attending a 2-day workshop with the German lace
teacher Marianne Stang & to visit an exhibition of lace on Wednesday at
Haapsalu, a little further north. On Monday there is also an exhibition of
the work of members of the Estonian Bobbin Lace Society & I am displaying
some of my recent work in this time, including my "Stonewall" & "Penguin"
which I entered in the Denver competition. I am pleased that a young
lacemaker I met in February will also be there & will be happy to translate
for me when I need help understanding what is going on. But I have packed a
dictionary with me also.

Now I must go & finish packing what I need before I help my youngest son
pack his bag as he is attending a 5-day "English" camp on Monday.

Enjoy your summer (or winter if you live south of the Equator).
I'll tell you all about my adventure later in the week after I return home.

[lace-chat] Wooly Nylon Thread

2006-07-12 Thread Pene Piip
To me "wooly nylon thread" seems like an oxymoron. How can thread be wooly
and nylon. But when I searched the internet, I found that it is a nylon
thread which is stretchy like wool, & used for sewing knitted fabric on a
serger.

Is there anybody who happens to have a serger & some of this "wooly nylon"
thread? My youngest son would like a few yards to do some magic or
illusion tricks with it.

If anyone can help me, please contact me privately & we can talk.

2006-06-19 Thread Pene Piip

I've only dyed my hair once, but I don't have a problem
if my hair turns red, because I am a red-head who has
become a strawberry blonde with all the white & grey
hairs becoming more profuse as I've gotten older.

DH has asked me to dye it, & I have a box to do it & now
just need to decide on a date to do it - maybe after I get
a piece of lace made for the local group's competition.
Coloring hair is one thing that is cheap & many Estonian
girls who aren't blond dye their hair all shades of red.

Sorry I can't help, but I'm sure there is an explanation on
the internet.

2006-05-24 Thread Pene Piip

Thank you, Martha, for the url to your DH's web-page.

I've always like to read out loud, also. My youngest son will turn 14 in
August & he still likes me to read out loud to him - it is our special time
together before bed time. He actually thought that when he learned to
read, that I would stop reading to him. But I told him that I'll keep
reading to him as long as he wants me to, because I like to read out loud
to him.

My eldest son recommended Terry Pratchet's books to me & I've read a few
out loud. They are great for doing different voices for the different
characters. We are currently reading the 2nd book in "The Nomes" triology
('Truckers', 'Diggers' & 'Wings') which are ideal for younger children.

Thanks again,

[lace-chat] My visit with Janice

2005-07-29 Thread Pene Piip

Dear Fellow Arachneans (some of whom I'll see soon in Denver),

On Monday evening I finally arrived in Chicago after flying for nearly
10 hours from Warsaw in Poland. A new terminal is in the process of
being built there & hopefully it'll improve things for passengers
traveling through. I think that it's just too small to cope with the
volume of people.

Anyway, Janice met me at the airport & I very much enjoyed the 3 nights
I stayed with her. On
Tuesday we went to a few shops to get a few things that I needed. It
rained most of the afternoon
but everyone was thankful that the heatwave had ceased to be. So if you
need rain, ask me to
come for a visit. ;-) Janice took me to visit a little town named
Woodstock where the movie
"Groundhog Day" had been filmed. While browsing in a little bric-a-brac
store Janice spotted a
cute mug with a yellow horse painted on it. After looking at it, she
said "I think that you should
consider buying this." I inspected this intriguing object & we both
laughed when I read "Made
in Estonia" on the sticker on the bottom. We both thought that was a
very weird coincidence.
I decided not to buy it, in the hope that whoever does purchase it would
learn something new.

Yesterday, before Janice dropped me off at DH's cousin's home where I'll
be sleeping for 2
nights, I had lunch with her & Jane, who gave me a bobbin & asked me
questions about Estonia.
Now I'm waiting for my washed clothes to dry so that I can pack my bag
again before I catch a plane on Saturday morning.

So I'll see some of you real soon,
Pene Piip, catching up with reading her e-mails & relaxing in the Windy
City.

[lace-chat] Peanut Butter / Hansa Days 2005

2005-07-13 Thread Pene Piip

I am able to buy Peanut Butter here in Estonia, but there is only
one brand "Fit Food". I bought a jar a few weeks ago but haven't
tried it yet. My sons are just scoffing the Vegemite & Promite that
their grandmother sent us from Adelaide, but I wish we could buy it
here.

Janice, I think the bubbles in the fountain may have been a prank
to amuse the children. And the tall stand was a pot plant stand.
Kristiina was working on Liia Tammes' pillow & one of the other
lacemakers brought the stand with her so that Liia didn't have to
sit on the ground, due to lack of table space. Unfortunately small
children had to be held up, or stand on something, to see the lace
being made. The pillow was a good attraction, enticing people
to come & look at what we were doing.

I forgot to tell you that late on Sunday afternoon, 2 Dutch female
senior citizens, who had been folk dancing, came up behind me
& said "We do that in Holland."

[lace-chat] Hanseatic Days 2005

2005-07-11 Thread Pene Piip

Last week I was going to write about the opportunity I had to
demonstrate bobbin lacemaking at the 25th Hanseatic Days
Festival which was hosted by the city of Tartu, but unfortunately
I was busy doing other things & preparing for a weekend guest.

Tartu has held a Medieval Festival close to Tartu Day (June 29th)
since 1996, but this year was to be special. The city would be host
to the largest gathering of representatives of the Hanseatic Towns.
Everyone who wants to dons medieval attire for the occasion.

I made an impromptu roller pillow that fitted in a basket, then wound
linen thread on some bobbins that my father had made for me many
years ago & started a pattern out of Brigitte Bellon's Reticilla lace book.
My bobbins were all different shapes & sizes but had that rustic look.

Here is a photo from the Tartu City web-site that shows the president
of the Estonian Bobbin Lace Society (Eesti Niplispits Selts), Kristiina
Halberg, making lace on a roller pillow.

Kristiina & her husband, Priit, were our guests for the weekend & she
had made their costumes. On Saturday morning Kristiina was pressing
out the wrinkles in my sewing room when she realized that right in front
of her were 2 shelves full of bobbin lace books. What a wonderful distraction!
Kristiina was in heaven with not enough time to look at them all. But a
wonderful reward to look forward to after demonstrating all day.

There were some pillows & bobbins wound with coloured thread for those
people who wanted to try BL. And we were able to listen to the music &
folk dancing on the stage near us. And after experiencing thunderstorms
during the week, we were fortunate to have good weather during the 3
days of the festival. Lots of people from Estonia & other Hanseatic towns
had a wonderful time.

On Saturday I visited the booths where the major Estonian towns were
promoting themselves. I received a very warm welcome at the Narva tent
from Olga Kublistkaja whom I met last April. She had some beautiful lace
embellished scarves for sale. At the Pärnu tent, Eeva Talts was making a
simple bookmark. On Sunday we had a photo taken of all the 8 lacemakers
who had been there teaching & demonstrating. I thought that was quite a
good turn out for such a small group which was only started 10 years ago.

BTW if you have access to "BBC World" on cable, there is a travel program
called "Tales from Europe" which is featuring the Baltic Countries, with the
reporter visiting Estonia in the last program.

Next Monday we are visiting Pärnu for the day to view an exhibition of lace.
Then there will be just one more week before I fly to Chicago for a few days
before flying to Denver. I think I better start packing my bag.

Time to get some lunch,
Pene

I have another question about a sentence in the same book.
This sentence is "Chance'd be a fine thing." I have no idea if
someone famous said it, but when I googled the sentence,
all the hits I got were from blog sites. So it seems to be very
popular.

Does anyone know where it originated from & what it means?

[lace-chat] Translation assistance

2005-06-20 Thread Pene Piip

The school teacher who has been giving our eldest son
Estonian language classes asked me about a sentence
in one of Caroline Graham's "Chief Inspector Barnaby"
books which she is translating into Estonian.

She asked me if I knew what a "finger dainty" was. We
presumed it was some sort of food, either a small dainty
cookie (long rather than round) or a sandwich. What is it?

Then there was a sentence that ended with: "she picked
up a sunray of bloater paste soldiers." I know that "soldiers"
are slices of bread or toast cut into fingers, but what is
"bloater paste" and a "sunray"? Can anyone please explain?

Thanks for your help,

[lace-chat] Camilla's Hats

2005-04-11 Thread Pene Piip
Now I know why the list was quiet over the weekend - the
UK Lace Guild's convention was on. I hope someone will
report on the high-lights of the weekend. I suppose I can
read about when my magazine arrives. My I.O.L.I. Bulletin
has yet to arrive though.
Anyway, the weather here in Tartu was dreary both days.
DH surprised me by watching the live telecast of the Royal
Wedding all the way through. I finished knitting a scarf at
the same time. Camilla's first hat was described as being
a straw hat covered with French lace & it was quite elegant.
Then when she appeared at the chapel with what I would've
called "grass" instead of feathers I was a little disappointed.
I would have chosen something more befitting of a Duchess.
What did other viewers think?
I just hope that we see some sunshine this week. The snow
has all gone, & the crocuses & snow-bells are blooming.

The other photo is of the piece of lace I made last year for a cousin

Guttermann silk thread that I used. I changed the pattern so that
the vine had a beginning & an end. I enjoyed making it for her.

[lace-chat] News Update from Estonia

2005-02-26 Thread Pene Piip
Hi all gentle web-spiders,
I know I haven't posted often, but last week was spent
trying to reduce the level of dust in the house so that we
could have an "Open House" last Thursday which was
Estonian Independence Day.
Then yesterday Erik & I travelled all the way to the west
coast to the city of Pärnu for the annual meeting of the
Estonian Bobbin Lace Society. There I met Eeva Talts who
is a talented & lovely lady, & who welcomed me to the group.
Eeva has a pattern in the UK Lace Guild 2005 calendar.
I took along my Milanese snake & my Bucks Butterfly to show
the Society's President, Kristiina Halberg, who I met last April.
Everyone was impressed with my work. We gave Lia Looga a
ride home after the meeting. Waiting in the mail box was my
OIDFA magazine which made my day just that little bit better.
I've been asked to teach tatting to a two ladies who are friends
of an American lady who lives near me. So I'll have to dig up
some spare shuttles so that I will have something to teach with.
And I also want to get started on my piece for the Denver I.O.L.I.
Lace Competition. And decide which classes to choose.
Warm regards, from snowy Estonia,

[lace-chat] Good for a giggle

2005-02-18 Thread Pene Piip
When the driver of a huge trailer lost control of his rig,
he plowed into an empty tollbooth and smashed it to pieces.
He climbed down from the wreckage and within a matter of
minutes, a truck pulled up and discharged a crew of workers.
The men picked up each broken piece of the former tollbooth
and spread some kind of creamy substance on it. Then they
began fitting the pieces together. In less than half an hour,
they had the entire tollbooth reconstructed & looking good as new.
"Astonishing!" the truck driver said to the crew chief.
"What was the white stuff you used to get all the pieces together?"
The crew chief said .. "Oh, that was tollgate booth paste."

[lace-chat] Winter Solstice or St. Thomas's Day

2004-12-22 Thread Pene Piip
Well, we have finally reached the shortest day or the longest night of the year
in the northern hemisphere. It seems strange that street-lights get turned off
around 8:30am & the sun rises at 9am but doesn't climb over the hill near
our house until after 11am. We did get a snowfall on Sunday morning, which
has made everything all white again. Hopefully it'll stay until after
Christmas.

On Sunday, our little lace group visited a working mill in the town of
Hellenurme
that is about 30 km west of Tartu. They had a small display of folk
costumes, some
of which had beautiful embroidery & crocheted or bobbin lace on the blouses. We
all enjoyed a simple afternoon tea before heading home again. One of our newer
members is deaf, but she is able to lip-read. We all received a small bar
of chocolate
and a divider pin with a tiny glass creature attached to the top. Mine
looks like a white
owl with read eyes, a black nose & black laid-back sort-of-horns (I won't
call them
ears because I know that owls have ear-holes, not ears like people have).

And I'll wish everyone a Happy Christmas & a peaceful year ahead in 2005,
Take care & keep making lace to make yourself happy,

[lace-chat] Stuff to make me homesick

2004-12-11 Thread Pene Piip
Hi to all fellow-spiders,
Today has been a good day. The sun was shining this morning & the Postman,
who I think is a lady, delivered my Australian Lace magazine & a note to say
that there was a parcel for me waiting at the Tartu Post Office.
When I opened it I found that my friend, Laurie Hughes, who had recently
visited
England had mailed me a UK Lace Guild Xmas bobbin & a glass ornament with
a hedgehog painted on it. She had also sent me a packet of Tim Tams which I'll
have to share with DH & 2 sons, but I'll keep them until Christmas.

The Australian Lace magazine had a short story about how Liz Ligeti, with help
from Ruth Budge, fooled Helen Bell at the Colorado State Fair with her Torchon
handkerchief which is really pretty.
Well, I better go & do a few useful things before I have to get dinner.

[lace-chat] Cattern Cookies

2004-11-18 Thread Pene Piip
As Helen Bell has already mentioned, there is the recipe in the Jones & Deer
book which I prefer to use. Last year I made cookies instead of cakes.
So I'll post my cookie recipe as a variant to their recipe.
CATTERN COOKIES
Combine in a large bowl 1.25 cups of plain flour with 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon,
1/4 cup of ground almonds, 1 cup of sugar, 2 teaspoons of caraway seeds.
( One ounce of currants is optional, depending on if you like them or not.)
Add to mixture 1/2 cup (100g) of melted butter & 1 medium-sized egg & mix all
together. Then I just formed the dough into a long sausage shape, about 2" in
diameter, wrapped it in plastic wrap & stored the log in the freezer for an
hour.

Preheat oven to 400F / 200C & then after removing plastic wrap, slice the log
into thin slices ( about 1/4 inch wide) and lay them on a cookie (or
biscuit) tray
and bake for 10 minutes until slightly brown. I might have even baked them for
5 minutes on the other side. They are really nice dunked in tea or coffee.

If anyone else makes them let me know how the cookies turn out.

[lace-chat] First Snowfall

2004-11-17 Thread Pene Piip
Dear gentle spiders,
Yesterday (Tuesday) we had several snow flurries & a light dusting overnight.
Then mid-morning it started snowing for several hours & now there is a good
couple of centimeters which has accumulated on all the trees & the ground.
So winter is finally here in Tartu. And I've been tatting some snowflakes.
Mary Piper's "Tatting" book has some interesting patterns. I adapted one
four-pointed motif I liked into six points. I found that by using mock rings
& split rings, cutting & tying off after making a round can be eliminated.
I would like to remind everyone about celebrating St Catherine's Day on
the 25th, next Wednesday. I'm hoping to make some Cattern Cookies.
Stay warm & happy,

[lace-chat] Anatomy Comparisons

2004-10-25 Thread Pene Piip
DH forwarded this one onto me. Hope no one will be offended.
Pene

Subject: Comparisons
A family is sitting around the supper table. The son asks his father,
"Dad, how many kinds of breasts are there?"
The father, surprised, answers, "Well, son, there are three kinds of
breasts. In her twenties, a woman's breasts are like melons, round
and firm. In her thirties to forties, they are like pears, still nice but
hanging a bit. After fifty, they are like onions."
"Onions?"
"Yes, see them and they make you cry."
This infuriated the wife and daughter.
So the daughter said, "Mum, how many kind of penises are there?"
The mother, surprised, smiles, and looks at her husband and answers,
"Well, dear, a man goes through three phases. In a man's twenties, his
penis is like an oak, mighty and hard. In his thirties and forties, it is like
a birch, flexible but reliable. After fifty, it is like a Christmas tree."
"A Christmas tree?"
"Yes, dead from the root up & the balls are there for decoration only."

[lace-chat] A very unusual birthday!

2004-09-17 Thread Pene Piip
Dear fellow-spiders,
I was wondering what Thursday was going to be like. It was my 46th birthday
& I was very pleased to get an email from an Australian high school friend
whom I hadn't had an email from in a while.
Anyway, while we have been in Estonia we just take each day as it comes.
Erik & I went grocery shopping in the morning & we bought a birthday cake.
It seems that we've been spending more time together since we arrived here
than we did in the USA. I hope that he will start looking for a job soon,
as the
money we have from the USA house sale will not last forever. It has been
suggested that I tutor students who want to improve their English, but I feel
that if Erik wants us to live here then it's more of his responsibility to
take
care of us financially, than it is mine.

I can truthfully say that I have received the biggest present on my birthday
that I'm ever likely to receive. Our shipping container had been promised for
Wednesday but took longer to get cleared by the custom's officials. Then
we got a phone call on Thursday morning saying that it would be delivered
later that afternoon. At 5:00pm everyone was watching as the box was
lifted off the truck & put on the ground. Then the doors were opened & the
unloading of our "stuff" began.
We stopped at 8:30pm to cut my cake & we ate half of it. The cakes &
pastries are very good here. I think they are more interesting in variety &
not too sweet. Well, at about 1:30am the box was being put back on the
truck & sent on its way to be filled up again. Now we face the daunting
task of finding a place for everything. The unpackers arrived this morning
& Erik had them move all the larger pieces of furniture, but our living room
is so full of boxes that it is impossible to watch the TV..
BTW I attended Lia Looga's "Bobbin Lace Jewellery" Exhibition on Wednesday.
She was very pleased to see me, & the display of her jewellery, handkerchiefs
& clothing embellishments that she has made over the last 5 years was quite
impressive. My MIL came with me & she greatly admired the beautiful items.
As a birthday gift my MIL gave me 2 small knitted lace doilies that she had
found in a handicraft shop in Tallinn. I might hang one in a window.
I'm off to bed now, as tomorrow we have a busy day ahead of us.

[lace-chat] Bobbin Lace in Tartu, Estonia

2004-08-28 Thread Pene Piip
Dear Fellow Spiders around the world,
I just had to share with you all my little exploration yesterday at
the Estonian National Museum which has free admission on
Fridays. The museum is only 3 blocks away & my eldest son &
MIL came with me to see the place.
There was a lovely display of costumes on the top floor & I saw GOLD
(at least to me it looked like gold) bobbin lace on 2 of the manequins,
& some crocheted, knitted & several pieces of bobbin lace made with
thick thread, probably for durability. There was some fine drawn-thread
work as well as a lot of beautiful embroidery.
I also saw a pedlar's chest with lengths of machine lace & ribbons, a
beautiful beaded belt & other things that you would expect to find being
sold by a travelling pedlar.
Before we left the museum we went back into the main exhibit hall on
the ground floor & I realized that I hadn't seen what was along the back
wall. Well, there in a glass case was some small pieces of BL with an
old photo of a lacemaker, & a bunch of bobbins (each about 7 inches
long & pointed like large honiton bobbins) & hanging from a piece of
lace which was pinned to the wall of the display case.
The museum doesn't allow photos to be taken, but I hope that I may be
able to get a closer look at the lace after October when Lia Looga, a
lacemaker I met in April & who lives in Tartu, holds a display of "Bobbin
Lace Ornaments" at the Museum.

I have 4 small tins that contain sets of magnets. Each magnet
would fit into a 1 inch square. The tins measure 5.5" x 4" x 2".
There are 2 sets, 1 each for Christmas & Halloween,
& the other 2 sets are of the Alphabet & of Animals.
I am trying to minimize what we are taking with us to Estonia,
and can't think of any local friend who would find these useful.
So I will raffle these as 2 lots of 2 tins to whomever sends me
their names before Sunday, July 4th. You may specify which
set you would prefer (Holiday, School or Both) when you
e-mail me your name & also your snail mail address.

[lace-chat] Re: Estonia

2004-06-07 Thread Pene Piip
Hi Devon,
The house will be our private residence, & is called "the prettiest house
in Tartu"
by the local residents. My husband, Erik, speaks Estonian & I learnt it for
18 months
when Sam was a baby. We will have an income from the rent of the 3 apartments
that are in the same building as the guest apartment, & as there will be no
mortgage
to pay off, Erik won't need to work full time. I don't know yet if he has
any political
aspirations, but you never know, he might follow in his grandfather's
footsteps &
decide to get involved in the local political arena to see if he likes it
or not.

I visited the website of the place in Estonia that Pene directed us to. It

the last half century of communist rule during which time it was state
owned. What an interesting story.

Pene, do you and your husband speak Estonian? What work is he planning to
do there? Will he enter politics? Will you run the house as a guest house
or use it only as a private residence?

[lace-chat] Catching up with my reading of lace-chat digests

2004-06-05 Thread Pene Piip
Dear all gentle spiders,
I've been catching up with my reading of digests (still have umpteen
lace ones to read) & strangely enough I can sympathize with Tamara's
& Weronika's observations about the way things are & done in the USA.
The house that we have lived in here in Massachusetts for the last 13.5
years has casement windows which is not typical of most New England
houses. But I like the screens which keep out the pesky black flies &
mosquitoes which this year are giving me huge welts. Thankfully this will
be the last summer I'll have to tolerate them as we are moving to the city
of Tartu in Estonia. We visited the country in April & found that there all
the houses don't have screens as there are no annoying insects around
to bother you. As our current house is different from the ordinary NE variety
we got an offer last weekend before it even went on the market. Now I just
need to finish sorting & decluttering all our STUFF.
In return for helping getting the rubbish & recyclables to the dump, I
took both my sons to the local mall where I am still flabbergasted with
how many of the shops just sell accessories & high priced stuff for those
that have nearly everything they need & are up to their eye-balls in debt.
The only things that I bought were a refill for the Coco perfume atomizer
(so I'm reusing the container), a lullaby music CD to send to the girl who
use to live next door when we lived in Canberra & is expecting her first
baby soon, & a card for a friend's son's graduation party.
If anyone wants to see the house that we are going to live in for the next
phase of our lives, you can go to :
DH is wearing a blue shirt in the 3rd photo on the History page. A few things
that appeal to us about living in Estonia, are the simpler lifestyle, more
exercise & less driving, healthier food & less candy & junk food, & no
mortgage to pay off!! We think that we are very lucky to have this adventure
ahead of us. The boys don't like the idea of moving but they'll adjust in time.
With regard to petrol prices (& I refuse to call it GAS also) most Americans
don't realize how long they have been paying low prices for it. I'm sure that
the majority of Americans don't even know how much citizens of other
countries have been paying for the last 20+ years. It sure is time that those
who drive their big SUVs (& they keep getting bigger) had a wake up call to
what their vehicles are doing to the environment with their unregulated fuel
emissions.
BTW I met 3 lacemakers in Tartu, Narva & Tallinn in April & I am looking
forward to July 2005 when the Estonian Bobbin Lace Society celebrate their
10th anniversary. For those that receive the New England Lace Group you
might see a few articles from me, about my "lace" encounters in Estonia.

[lace-chat] Royal wedding

2004-05-15 Thread Pene Piip
I went to the Sydney Morning Herald's web-site to see photos & get a
description of what Mary's dress was made of:

It was really unusual to see gum leaves in her wedding bouquet.
The article below described her dress & veil.
So beautiful in satin and lace
The "something old" was eight metres of 100-year-old Irish lace, laid
beneath the soft-panelled pleating of her full skirt, fashioned from 24
metres of duchess satin and lined in silk organza.
Another 24 metres of duchess satin was used to craft the six-metre-
long train, which was managed with ease by Mary's attendants,
Amber Petty and Mary's sisters Patricia Bailey and Jane Stephens.
Her veil, which featured the same Irish lace, was "something borrowed",
formerly a gift to Frederik's grandmother, the late Queen Ingrid, from
Crown Princess Margaret of Sweden.

[lace-chat] Spring Vacation week

2004-04-27 Thread Pene Piip
Dear fellow Arachneans,
I just want to let you all know that at the end of last week I met 3
bobbin lace makers in a country that not everyone knows about.
Our family visited the country of Estonia, the northern-most Baltic country.
In particular we stayed for 5 nights in Tartu, which is also known as "The
City of Good Thoughts". It is where Tartu University is located and the
house that was built for my husband's paternal grandfather. Several
people referred to "Oru Villa" as the prettiest house in Tartu.
If you wish to see the house go to:
We visited Lia Looga, & her husband, in Tartu on Wednesday & were shown
her lace pictures, flowers, jewelry, scarves & table linen that she had made
over the last 5 years. Then on Thursday, we drove to Narva, the eastern-most
city, & saw a display of Russian bobbin lace made by Olga Kublitskaja.
She has a web-site: We also explored the
restored Narva Castle from which we could look across the Narva River into
Russia. We then drove back to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia that afternoon.
On Friday afternoon, we had arranged to meet Kristiina Halberg, who is the
President of the Estonian Bobbin Lace Society, under the clock of the 600
year old Town Hall at 4pm. While we drank coffee, we exchanged lace books.
I gave Kristiina a copy of Rosemary Shepherd's "Introduction to Bobbin Lace"
book for the Society's library & she gave me 2 books about Estonian Bobbin
Lace. My husband acted as translator as he speaks Estonian very well. He
has been a regular visitor for the last 10 years, & listens to Estonian radio
via the internet when he can.
The Estonian Bobbin Lace Society (Eesti Niplispitsi Selts) started in 1995 &
will be celebrating their 10th anniversary next year.
The weather was very pleasant during the week we were there.
