Re: [LU] Match v " team of weirdos "

Just to be clear - I was not implying that Dave or anyone on the list is
writing Skoobs off.  I am just curious to know whether we think he has
done enough already to justify waiting a bit longer to get someone or
rushing to get anyone with first team experience.

Are we writing off Skoobs already? I thought the last two games showed
immense improvement in tactics, style and shape when defending.  For
me the key thing to get right now is the right man for the job.  Get
the wrong guy, and it's back to the drawing board.  This guy who Ajax
fired a couple of weeks ago looks like a disaster waiting to happen
judging from the comments I read from Ajax fans / dutch supporters. I
would be happy to go with Skoobs for a while if it means waiting for
the best guy for us.

As the chant went " follow follow follow, you're a team of f@cking
weirdos, Ronaldo's a rapist, greenwoods a rapist and Scholes just
loves to suck toes"Made me laugh even if none of them actually play.
Very low key police presence at Piccadilly early on, and only a
handful of fans on our train, met by a handful of coppers at Leeds.
Then massed ranks of police at the barrier and even stranger ( I
wondered for a second if the pub had been given to them) 5 vans and
15 or so police outside the west Ridings.  This was the scum
game.Team news was as expected but the bench showed how we are
suffering yet again with injuries as Gyabi, Monteiro, Joseph and
Mullen all made the bench. Not much there if we needed a boost.
At the bus queue my lad got into it with some knob ( unfortunately
not the only one as it turned out) who sang the runway song, then
after my lads comment, tried to double and triple down with version
of Daisy daisy and the laughing policeman ( not putting words on
here) - no one joined in as we berated him , his " excuse" one of
them was buried in a cemetery near him and it got attention. What a
dick. He later remembered it was David Pegg ( buried in Doncaster)
Inside the ground it was the right type of hostility near us, the new
song as above , we all hate scum etc, with lots of backing for us "
Billy bremner's barmy army" - great stuff. The cheer when Adams
thundered into the first tackle leaving their player on the deck was
brilliant
We really got at them and Summerville missed an easy chance early on,
and he had another before half time in a half of few chances,
Meslier had to save with his feet as s woeful pass from the mainly
excellent Wober let in that hateful Fernandes what a horrible player
he is whining moaning and trying to referee it
Second half ( till last 10) was even  better as we created lots of
half chances, summerville had a save, Harrison had a flick just wide,
koch had a header blocked,Ayling came closest with a shot that
ricocheted through a scum players legs and went wide, he followed it
up with a great overhead kick that unfortunately went straight to the
keeper.  We pressed and pressed but it was not to be. At the other
end their first attack led to them hitting the bar, then on 80
minutes it all fell, apart. We had made changes Harrison and Bamford
off for Rutter and aaranson and it didn't work and tiredness crept
in. We left Rashford clear in the box and a good cross found him 0-1
, minutes later their sub zoomed past Koch and his shot sneaked in.
Game over. It  could have been worse as they put it in twice more but
both offside. So a 2 - 0 defeat in a game we could have won
The now familiar comment after the game   " play like this and we
will be all right"Trouble is , so far we have only played like that v
good teams   and have not a lot to show for it , defeats by Arsenal,
Spurs,  scum ( ok win  v Chelsea and liverpool). We need to play like
that v poor teams starting with the next two and we need to score
when on top
All the players gave their all and before Wednesday,  a point and
only minus 2 in the goals column may have been acceptable but not
when  2 up in the first game and the better team for 80 minutes of
the second.
We need to get points , at least 4 in the next 2, and turn things
around.  This week has given us more hope but not much more than
that. Summerville and Gnonto are brilliant to watch and Adams and big
boy McKinney give us a strong base in midfield and Wober has improved
us at the back, so it is not a lost cause by any means,.
Finally a well done to Firpo best game yet ( albeit a low bar) he
was ok defensively and offered more than Struijk going forward

2023-02-09 Thread Greg Adams
Well that was a change from what we've been seeing in the last 11 months
or so.  Everything we would want - and expect  - from this squad we saw
last night.  That in itself raises many questions, but suffice to say
that the way the team played gives an insight into how good they can
be.  Gone (mostly) were the aimless hoofs up-field, the charging towards
the ball at all times and players needlessly and carelessly losing
possession. Instead we showed the intelligence to hold off and drop back
into a defensive formation when necessary, while always trying to find a
way to attack.  It looked like the players were playing instinctively
and trusting themselves and each other to make the run / make the pass ,
always looking for a free man. There were times during the game that we
made the scum look ordinary, which is always fun to see 😁

How much of this performance was due to who we were playing will become
clear in the next few games, but the fact that we can play this way
bodes well for the rest of the season.

MOTM for me was Max, with Koch, Willy and two pit bulls in midfield
close seconds.  Everyone else did well enough with the possible
exception of Bamford and Junior.

It was also good to see some calmness on the sideline with the three
coaches concentrating on the game and trying to counteract Ten Haag's
changes.

Oh, and 20M for Harrison?  He is worth way mare than that.

2023-02-07 Thread Greg Adams
So long Jesse Marsch, we hardly knew you. In truth we all hated you from
the start , with your American ways and tight white trousers 😁.

Seriously though, the board has to make the right appointment now.  It
will determine whether we consolidate over the next few years, or
continue to struggle with one manager after another. A Potter (Brighton
version) would be nice. Have a team which punches above its weight,
bloodying a few big noses along the way.  Let's face it - unless the
49-ners have more money to throw away, sorry invest, we will not reach
the dizzy heights of the top five / six.  And that will be fine with me
and, and I suspect most of us here.

I would be interested to know who the list think might be the right man
for the job.  Talk so far has been of Corberan, Pochettino and Bielsa.
All three should be able to get more out of this squad.  If it was up to
me, I'd try to get Pochettino until the end of the season and give him
the option of staying if he keeps us up. If Bielsa feels he has learnt
something new and wants to take up the reins again, I would be happy
with that as well.

For now it seems Chris "Brutus" Armas will be the guy in charge, which
is weird given his friendship with Marsch.  Lets hope we don't keep him
after beating the scum in the next two games.

As for Marsch, he will likely get another gig sometime soon, and maybe
will have learned from his experience here, and become a better coach.
He seems a nice guy so best of luck to him.

It is times like this that I miss the Voice of Football. I'm sure
Chantal would have a pome for Jesse. 😂

very happy he’s gone.

One reporter at the press conference asked about Bamfords comment (isolated, no
runs from midfield, 2 defenders on him), he was just being honest and open. It
would be interesting to know what player pressure fed into the board decision?

Just seen report on BBC Look North that while the club would like to have
someone in place by Sunday, contractual discussions may mean that isn’t
possible.

Remember that Boro piece on Orta? Well, someone's just shared a piece on Marsch from a
USA forum entitled "Jesse Marsch might not be very good." It's from a year ago,
and it's terrifying. Won't share the whole thing because it's badly written and rambling.
But some bits are jaw-dropping when you consider we'd tracked him for years and knew him
better than he knew himself.
"At New York teams worked out that you set a low block and play over him. The book
on how to stop them was written, and things didn't go well. They did inexplicably beat
Toronto - the best MLS team of all time. More on that later."
"In his biggest game, NY go a goal down and the opposition set a low block. Marsch
can't adjust tactics. They do have 20 shots chasing the game, all of them fail on some
sort of mishit pass/shot because there's no time. They press harder than they've ever
pressed . They create chance after chance after chance. Then in the second half after a
slight change from the opposition they create nothing."
"In Salzburg, he took Haaland and an exciting team to an expected league title (a
very fortunate points deduction to their rivals helped). In the CL they look good against
Liverpool and not good against worse teams. Fans complain that he's a mediocre coach who
can't make adjustments."
"Leipzig are unanimously expected to qualify for the champions league. After 14
games they're 8th and have lost three in a row. Leipzig are unable to deal with low
blocks. They have a knack of looking good against good sides, and not so good against
less good sides."
"Marsch tactics work very well when you have an opponent who like time on the ball.
You can press and disrupt. Bit if teams play on the counter or hit long balls over the
top, Marsch's teams all come up short."
"Marsch has coached at three teams. All of which reached unprecedented heights in
his absence."

Me too.  I have had enough of this shit football.  I can't see it
getting any results in this league. Maybe in Austria, but not the German
league and certainly not here.  One thing that bugs me no end is the
constant hoofing the ball when most of these players are capable of
taking an extra touch and looking for a pass. One other thing: have you
noticed how we never seem to have a player in space? How every team we
have played against always seem to have at least one player wide open?
It seems like basic tactics to me, but what do I know?

What is hard to take is how hard we work to close down all over the pitch, but
they get the ball on the edge of our box and there is no-one within 5 yards of
their player!

Plus the guy who was ‘fouled’ for the free-kick was offside - this combo of
desperate luck and sh*te defending on the right has to change, otherwise we’ve
had it!

Very impressed by Wober though - some great tackles/interceptions, and a couple
of excellent forward passes.

It’s going to be a long second half! We can still do this, but another ‘here we

Yep, today isn’t a ‘must’ win, but if we don’t the mood music will be very grim
indeed.  Marsch’s tactical nous, or lack of, have left me unimpressed from day
1, but we have some really good players and I’m just hoping a cohesive unit
will develop, pretty damn quickly! We have a really strong bench, but as ever
how the defence performs will be critical! I’m unsure why Weston isn’t on at
the start, but let’s see?

I reckon Marsch has 5 league games to determine his future at Leeds - whilst
getting rid in mid-February wouldn’t be ideal, by then we’ll know whether a
turn of fortunes has happened?

Pretty nervous here though :-(

2023-01-05 Thread Greg Adams

.. when we have a small Willy?

I really like this kid.  He was, for me, the best player on the pitch -
constantly moving, looking to play forward and a truly excellent goal.
We deserved more from this game, but a silly pass from Aaronson gifted
them a chance which they took.  Aaronson needs to be dropped for a
while.  He has been ineffectual for a few games now, and doesn't rate a
starting role.  Lots of running around but very little progress or
creativity.  Especially with Willy and Jimmy showing a lot more skill
and nous, but I suspect he is the teacher's pet, so won't be dropped.
Harrison showed what was possible with a bit more composure.

Marsch looks done to me.  It felt sometimes last night that the players
were doing their own thing and not following the game plan that we saw
in previous matches.  Now that may be Jesse's changes, but judging from
his press conferences, I don't thinks that is the case. It looked very
much the type of football that we saw under the previous manager who's
name should not be mention here, apparently.

I hope incoming Max is a good left back, because we really need to give
Pascal a break.  I would drop Cooper for Pascal to get him (Pascal) back
to being a center-back again.  Incidentally, it does it not seem weird
that we are offering contract extensions to all our center-backs when we
have Cresswell and Heldje waiting in the wings? I would be comfortable
letting Cooper and LLorente go at the end of the season to give the two
youngsters a chance.

It is inevitable that Marsch will go this season - wrong man, wrong job, so the

Of course if VAR had spotted the Meslier foul things would have been different,

Yes, our defence is a problem. I would argue a major factor behind that is that
Bielsa's hand-picked left back, Junior Firpo, is crap. Marsch realizes this and

Re: [LU] Spuds

2022-11-13 Thread Greg Adams
I'm not anti-American.  I'm anti Marsch because he cannot coach what is
a decent squad to defend.  Everyone seems to think that a new center
back is needed.  Fair enough, but I would argue that the the two we have
been playing with do not get enough help from the midfield. Roca, IMHO,
is not much good at defending, and Adams is not disciplined enough.  We
play with two midfielders in front of a back four.  Roca to the left and
Adams to the right.  When Adams goes forward to try to win the ball,
Roca holds his position. When the player in possession plays the ball
into the area Adams has just left, Roca is still hanging around in his
original position on the left, leaving a Adams-shaped hole for any
decent attacker to slip into. This is why Koch is always so busy in all
our games.  Roca should be moving to the middle when Adams moves up to
give himself a better chance of cutting out those balls (something
Kalvin was very good at).  This is down to coaching, and just one
example of how teams find it easy to get through us.  I have watched
every Leeds game this season, and the amount of times we get caught by
the same move is ridiculous. Again, this is something a good coach will
see and come up with a plan to rectify it.  There is no evidence to show
that this is been done.

BTW, there are plenty of Liepzig fans who will tell you that this was a
feature of Marsch's time there.

There may indeed be a conspiracy against us by refs and the PL, but that
is not why we lost yesterday.  We lost because we could not defend as a
team. And Marsch's tactics.

But all of that is just my opinion.  Feel to disregard any or all of it
as you please.

If those are the stats, then I guess it does not include the Brighton
game.  But that is not what bothered me on Saturday. His passing was
terrible, normally he has about a 50% completion rate, but Saturday I
can't remember one pass that went to a Leeds player.  I like Rodrigo.  I
think he is an intelligent player. His runs are good, and he mostly
makes good decisions.  Even his passing attempts are good, it's just
that the ball is always just behind, too soft, too short etc.

Against Wolves, he had 3 shots and 1 goal but in the following three

actually pretty consistent on shots and goals. An average of 4.5 shots
and 1 goal per game is pretty good, we'll see if this continues over a
better sample size but if that's what JM sees perhaps that's why he

Re: [LU] Any reports?

2022-08-29 Thread Greg Adams
I'm still reasonably confident we'll stay up with this squad, but the
first half was dreadful from us.  Marsch said afterwards the plan was to
get balls into the Brighton half quickly and then play from there, but
the players did not execute properly, which worries me slightly. That
type of hoofball has been proven to be a failure in this league, and it
is just shit football. Time after time the ball was lost to Brighton.
Our front four ran around a lot but could not hold on to the ball to
make any meaningful attack on goal. Brighton sat deep and won all the
loose balls and attacked down both flanks exposing Struik (not a left
back) and Rasmus (a right back, but not very good). Only Meslier and
their poor finishing kept us in the game.

Second half we started to hold the ball better, which led to plenty of
possession and a few half chances. But Brighton always looked like they
would score and so it turned out.  Again down the flank, with Struik
drawn towards the center leaving a man free on the outside and a cross
from our right.  Brighton sat back after they scored and we had one or
two chances - Sinisterra at the far post and Rodrigo(?) who blazed over.
We could and should have got a point, but Brighton were the better team
overall.

On the plus side, Adams did not give the ball as much as the previous
three games and Sinisterra looked good.  Koch was good again and Jack
and Brenden had reasonable games. Klich was good again when he came on.

Downside? Rodrigo was useless.  Misplaced passes and wayward shooting
again.  I suspect Marsch told him to shoot more. Rasmus still looks out
of his depth in my opinion.  Llorente had one of those games where he
falls over a lot.

I would have brought on Joffy sooner and also taken Rodrigo off for
Summerville.

Everton on Tuesday will be a test for Marsch. The starters so far have
done well, but there was a lack of creativity on Saturday.  I would take
a chance with Drameh if Ayling is not ready, and also start with Klich
instead of Rodrigo / James and play Joffy up front.  I'd be tempted to
play Summerville instead of Brenden as well, but that may be too many
changes.

Whatever happens, Everton are there for the taking and 3 points will
perk us all up again.  Lose and doubts will start creeping in re
Marsch's tactics. But we're 5th and we would all take that after 4 games
I suspect.

Re: [LU] Soton thoughts from the armchair

2022-08-14 Thread Greg Adams
No arguments with this.  Adams for me looks poor.  Plenty of times he
had a second or two to control and look for a pass, but just kicked it
away.  He does not seem able to make a decent pass.  Runs around a lot
and gets a lot of tackles in without actually winning the ball.

In both games Kristensen has looked suspect to quick / tricky wingers.
He also loses his man too easily. Not much of a threat going forward
either for all his stats and reputation.

Roca is very slow.  Looks to make a pass, but has not yet been able to
play a decent ball that could make a difference.  He and Adams also have
not been able to shield the defence at all.

Aaronson is the pick of the new guys.  He should get better, but I'm not
overly confident that the other three will.  All of them seem to be way
off playing at the speed of the PL.

I'm still on the fence re Marsch.  His tactics seem to be kick the ball
long and run around a lot, hoping the ball breaks to us in the
opposition half.  At times we look like Burnley under Dyche. Also it
would have been simple to set up more defensively after going two up.
He said he tried to do that, but pulling Harrison back has never
worked.  He just does not defend well enough, so no surprise that their
second came from his side.

At the moment we are getting goals solely due to the skill of the
players, but as a team we look poor.

I'm still optimistic we'll stay up without to many problems, but Marsch
has to get the team playing much better.

On the plus side Everton and Villa looked shit in the half that I
watched, and I there will be other teams worse than us. Southampton were
useless until we gave them hope, and even then it was more a case of us
losing our composure.

Can't argue with the four points, but Like Rich, I worry about how we'll
cope against better sides.

stop playing with a few players looking like they were struggling (Roca and
Adams in particular) and Marsch needed his subs on earlier. He has admitted to
this afterwards which is fair. Very disappointing to lose a 2 goal league but
any away point is useful.
Overall, I think we might have played 2 of the teams who will be involved in a
relegation battle with us so 4 out of 6 points aint bad.
For me though, I think the tactics are suspect. I don't think our new recruits
are doing it at the moment and although it's very early days I have grave
concerns about Kristensen and Roca. Roca really struggled 2nd half and he lacks
pace and looks very ordinary to me. Rasmus just looks industrial with no real
guile to his play / defending.
Scores:
Meisler - 6. I thought he could have saved one of the goals
Kristensen - 3. Contributed nothing other than a few panic clearances
Struijk - 5. Doesn't look completely comfortable at left back but the 2nd goal
was his (Rod knicked it) and he got through a lot of work.
Koch - 6. Some good work
Llorente - 6. Likewise but desperate defending at times
Adams - 4. Looks very lightweight to me. For their first goal he just gave up.
Roca - 3. Didn't contribute much after the first 25 mins.
Aaronson - 7. Lively without threatening.
Rodrigo - 7. Poor first half but then came alive.
Bamford - 3. injured again
Harrison - 7. I thought he was our best player throughout.
Subs:
Klich - looked lively again off the bench.
Sinisterra - also lively

Unbeaten in 2 but I think we'll get tonked by any of the top 6 teams. Hope I'm
wrong.

The amount of posts generated that day was huge.

It was a great intro to what would turn out be be the most entertaining,

These days a 25m signing rates no posts at all.

I don't see MB leaving this season, but he might decide to call it a day
and head back to Argentina after next season. Facts are that he has
stayed here the longest, and genuinely seems happy here, and, crucially
the team has not slowed down / digressed to any extent, which may be an
indicator that he can take them further (with a few upgrades).

More interesting for me is when he does decide to go, who would be a

Cheers, Dave. Thanks as always for the reports. Am I right in thinking
TC always plays the 4-2-3-1 formation? Is there any indication that the
team is switching formations in the games?

A bit late with this one - yesterday was a long day and all the beer, morphine

Anyway on to the game. One of those really mixed games, some good stuff, some
very poor and at the end of it all two points dropped. It is hard when the
opposition do not want to play - they stuck lots of men behind the ball and
were niggly, dirty but very hard working throughout. This showed up our lack of
guile and ingenuity. As others have said we need a quality midfield player -
O'Kane and Phillips are too similar and both too lacking in certain areas. I
thought the ref did us no favours - not sure how their number 2 (someone told
me it was ex Leeds player Eric Lihaj) stayed on the pitch and the ref seemed to
let a lot of stuff go but then managed to book Pontus for a tackle that looked
fine from my spot, and then booked Saiz for arguing when he was definitely
fouled in my view.
None of that takes away the fact that we were disappointing for much of the
game and whilst we always hoped and even thought we might score we were never
really believing that we would. Again set pieces looked to be our best outlet
but none of them quite worked out. First half the only real chance we had was a
corner that Pontus headed with power but straight at the keeper who spilled it
to Roofe who could only hook it over the bar
Second half we did step it up at times and Roofe and Hernandez both should have
scored when brilliant football by the mercurial Saiz (we cannot afford to lose
him!) put them through on goal - Roofe hit the bar and Hernandez shot at the
keeper. Lasogga also came close with a header from a cross by Sacko but it was
just too high for him to get any power
We were also guilty of some awfully wayward shooting - Phillips started this on
the 47th minute when he blasted one high wide and not very handsome from a
hundred yards out - ridiculous. His next attempt was closer both in where he
shot from and where it ended up. Saiz, Roofe and Lassogga also had attempts
from long range that threatened the crowd more than the goal
At the other end Felix made three saves - a decent one in the first half, a
good one that he tipped over the bar, and an everyday one that he parried out
to our defender (thankfully) as Forest made no real attempt to win the game.

So a poor start to the New year especailly when coupled with the defeat at Brum
- of the last six matches these were the two real bankers and yet we only got
one point from the six , thankfully we got 12 points from the other four. Two
games without a goal is also not great to say the least.

The 'wave your scarves' project looked decent again but not sure if it is going
to be 'our thing' or if indeed we want it to be. I thought the crowd were very
loud early doors but the atmosphere died as our football failed to impress.
The fans have done their bit - another 30k plus crowd turning out to watch a
game that was live on Sky so now it is over to Orta and Radz etc to make the
most of the transfer window. I have heard lots of managers say that the January
is hard and Orta in his long interview made the same points and indicated that
we would not be planning to do much business in the window. Having said that we
are still (just) in the play off position and only 6 pts off second (Wolves are
untouchable) so if we can bring in the right couple of players we could make
sure of a play off place minimum and that could be enough to get us up - the
play offs being a bit of a lottery and anyone can win them (OK apart from us
given our last four play off results - losing 3 finals and one semi!)
Anyway Happy New Year to all on the list and Leeds United fans wherever you are
ALAW as they say !

I have a simpler theory. In raising an open hand with the palm clearly visible

It is simply a greeting "I mean you no harm" , think of all those Westerns "
How".

Did Allan Shearer give a Nazi Salute when he scored ? No it was a simple act of
jubilation.

Yes they used to give Nazi salutes in the South Stand, fingers pointed , with
the requisite lateral motion of the arm. I don't think this was intended to be
anything other than offensive. I used to find it irritating more than anything,
spending the afternoon stood on your seat to make sure that your new Jaeger
cable knit didn't get soiled on the seat was fair enough but the gesticulation
was a distraction and it stretched the elbows in your pringle.

Im not event going to discuss deportations from Italy now when I endured 90
minutes of Crawley Town vs Doncaster last night in frost. There was no evidence
of saluting or deportations , but if you were going to hunt down illegals
Crawley would be a good place to start as it is both a shit hole and close to
an airport.

Re: [LU] new manager?

2012-02-01 Thread Greg Adams
I'm not a Grayson fan - I thought he could do better, but I cannot see
anyone else who will do a better job. We might get a small improvement
over the short term, but as long as Bates is there and we have a weak
manager, , we will struggle.
My main beef with Grayson is that he did not stand up for the club he
apparently loves. If he really felt for the club, he could have spoken
out against the way Bates and Harvey are running the club. He would
have been sacked, but would have been a hero in our eyes. In effect, he
is guilty of being a "good german" while the club is being fucked over.
So I have no sympathy for him.
My hope is that we get a manager who is strong enough and clever enough
to start a new dynasty a la The Don and Wilko. That is what we need
more than promotion. I think that such a manager could provide a spark
which will galvanize the team and fans, which might prompt a bid from
someone for the club. For Leeds United it is not enough to be one of
the numbers in the premier league. We have to be among the players,
challenging for honours, playing a significant role in the title race,
etc. We are a big club, and should have a big club mentality. The only
way for that to happen, is for a reboot, a re-build of this club. A
manager with vision to get the team playing will be a start. Then the
fans can work on getting rid of bates.

Imho of course.

Re: [LU] Delph

2012-01-21 Thread Greg Adams
Only if you stay away because the product is poor can he use this
excuse. If it is made clear that people are staying away as a protest
against Bates and for the well-being of the club, then that excuse does
not work. It would look like this tremendous sacrifice that the fans
are making to save their club.
You would have to get a significant number - preferably everyone to stay
away for at least two games for the effect to be felt. As you pointed
out, 2 million a game will make a huge dent in his pocket. Does anyone
on this list who attends games regularly think it could be done?

Dave
I agree with all you say. I just wonder whether grayson is the issue?
Maybe a better manager/coach will be able to get more out of the squad
we have and also engender a more positive feeling among the players.

I know its easy for me sitting here in sunny Azania (38 degrees C, no
wind, going to jump in the pool after this), but would it not be better
to try and organize a boycott of one or two games? Could it be done?
That would soon show bates that the fans mean business, as it would hit
him in the pocket. It would mean a complete empty stadium, which would
take a lot of cajoling, but would imho, be worth it if it gets Bates
out. I am not convinced that he is the sole problem, but I do think
that while he is there, we will struggle to progress.

To pre-empt the posts saying we should support the team, and that a
boycott will affect them - fuck them. Most of them would leave for more
money, higher league, etc in a flash. Maybe it time for a revolution.

I feel for you guys that pay to go watch the team every week. I don't

Or maybe they just want out. Which is more worrying since that would
imply that they do not want to play for grayson or do not rate him or
something similar. It might be just a money issue, but I find it hard to

Speaking after Bafana were unlucky to be beaten 1-0 by an experimental
United States side in the Nelson Mandela Challenge played at a packed
Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday night, Mosimane said he was happy with
his side, especially Leeds United forward Somma, Belgium based
midfielder Daylon Claasen and the talented Orlando Pirates midfielder,
Andile Jali.

It was Mosimane´s first defeat in four matches in charge of Bafana since
he took over from Brazilian Carlos Alberto Parreira after the World Cup
finals. This was also the first goal Bafana have conceded under Mosimane.

"We had to lose sometime and this is not a train smash. We learnt a lot
about ourselves against a tough US side," said Mosimane afterwards.

Somma (25) excelled on his debut and had the fans and media singing his
praise, despite coming off early in the second half and showed he has
the muscle and the skills to mix it at international level.

He will give Mosimane more options and variety in attack that has been
lacking in Bafana for some years.

"Somma has a future with Bafana and he showed he has talent. He is like
a predator in that penalty area. "I have a new fox in the box. I was
pleased with him and he is in my plans for the future," said Mosimane.

Somma was given a standing ovation when he was replaced early in the
second half by Sthembiso Ngcobo and has upped the competition for
strikers in the national set-up that has been lacking for years.

Now the likes of injured Katlego "Killer" Mphela and Bernard Parker are
no longer automatic choices.

Despite losing to a sucker goal five minutes from time netted by
teenager Juan Agudelo, Mosimane was not complaining. "The object of this
friendly was to give players like Somma, Claasen and Jali some game time
and I was happy with what I saw."

But Mosimane admitted he could have given another debutant, Mamelodi
Sundowns midfielder Matthew Pattison, more game time.

Pattison came on in the last three minutes to earn his first cap.

"Maybe I should have brought on Pattison earlier but I cannot play
everyone at the same time."

Bafana outplayed the US side that are ranked 25th in the world and US
coach Bob Bradley, admitted afterwards his side were under a lot of
pressure.

"South Africa had us under a lot of pressure in the first half but we
got stronger as the game went on," said Bradley.

Mosimane said he would rather lose 1-0 than play for a 0-0 draw. "I
never saw their goal coming, but I would rather lose 1-0 against the run
of play than defend the last few minutes and try and hold out for a draw."

Mosimane was also full of praise for his captain on the night, Steven
Pienaar, who ran himself ragged and was replaced in the 78th minute.

"Pienaar could not run any more and had to come off. He was exhausted
after he played a storming match against Arsenal at the weekend in the
English Premiership. He led by example and I was delighted with his
efforts."

Mosimane also had praise for the US.

"Give the US credit for their professionalism and their tactical
discipline. We had a few chances but their two centre backs were
outstanding and we just could not get through," said Mosimane.

The Bafana coach also refused to blame Kenyan referee Silvester Kirwa
for not awarding Bafana a penalty when Somma was brought down inside the
US danger zone in the 10th minute.

"I am not sure it was a penalty so there is nothing to complain about."

MARCHING ON TOGETHER

[LU] Becchio, Somma

2010-11-10 Thread Greg Adams
Just watched the goals on SSN. The ball was clearly mis-controlled by
Becchio and bounced off his knee into the path of Johnson. Cue SSN
presenter: "Becchio set up Johnson..." WTF?

Somma has been called up by South Africa to play the USA next week.
Looking forward to seeing him in the flesh.
