Mike.A simple way to make your own steady rest is to make the cross members
first. then USING those mounted to the Legacy's rails, you can make your
blocks, By using your tailstock as a reference point, mark the steady blocks so
the center point of the tail stock is the middle of the V/ center of the steady
rest blocks.

Does it seem pretty ridgid?

There is sure a lot of cool innovations went into these machines.

I was originally trained as a wood and metal patternmaker. Along the way
somewhere I moved more into woodworking and did not include metalworking in
my shop planning. Metal fabrication with these mills would definitely be a
plus. I may need to develop a relationship with a local machine shop.

New in the box (NIB)

Thin Stock Support: Mounts to the underside of the adjustable bed rail with 2
- 90 degree mounting brackets, and supports material while milling thin stock
between 5/8" and 1 7/8 " thick.

Thin Stock Follower: Mounts to the router carriage. The vinyl dust shields
need to be removed to mount the follower.

Can only be used on straight round pieces (no tapers or curves). Adjustable bed
must be set level. Position support following behind the cutter when milling
stock round. Position support in front of the cutter when milling spirals.

Subject: My 1200 - Accessories: Thin Stock Support and Thin Stock Follower

New in the box (NIB)

Thin Stock Support: Mounts to the underside of the adjustable bed rail with 2
- 90 degree mounting brackets, and supports material while milling thin stock
between 5/8" and 1 7/8 " thick.

Thin Stock Follower: Mounts to the router carriage. The vinyl dust shields
need to be removed to mount the follower.

Can only be used on straight round pieces (no tapers or curves). Adjustable bed
must be set level. Position support following behind the cutter when milling
stock round. Position support in front of the cutter when milling spirals.

Ray,The gift that keeps on giving!  Can't wait for the next thing you post!Since all these are NIB - you seem to have all the paperwork that they came with - instruction sheet(s), etc. When you get the chance, would you please scan all of them and put them in an email to The Group?Scanned, they will not be as big of a file vs photos would; and their clarity should be as good as the originals.I imagine many of us have acquired our Mills like you did - buying them from the original (or follow-on) owners.  Probably in many cases, the Instruction sheets were not included in that purchase.   They were probably filed in binders by owner - but since binders were elsewhere in the shop or house, did not go out the door with the Mill.  {:-(Thanks again.Mac-Original Message-

I wish you luck with your search Tim I have the thin stock support not for sale
before you ask I too would like the legacy thin stock follower but I will most
likely have to make it.

If you have some rail the rest of the thin stock support is just 2 blocks of
delrin with a 90 degree v cut in it

Re: Thin-stock follower & Thin Stock Support HOT

2019-05-01 Thread 'Curt George' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
Hello TimI wish you luck finding those parts you are looking for. Perhaps it
would be a better question for the group ,being , if anyone could make the
parts in question?  Or,If any one owns these parts, can you post them to the
group. I have only seen the photo's in Legacy catalog, No first hand
experiences with this parts.(for me.) Perhaps a few photo's could help clear
out some of the cob-webs on this topic ?  ;-)
Here are some pictures that Tim is looking for...

Call and ask for Cindy, she takes care of the parts of these machines. Not
everything is available and it takes a bit. But I just received my brand
new sets last week. So give her a call and see where it goes.

besides what is listed in the back of the manual.

I have a lead on some parts I have been looking to purchase for my 1200 LOM
and need to know what they cost originally to may a fair offer.

1. Thin stock follower

2. Thin Stock Support

3. Vertical Bench Vise

Kind regards,

Tim of ZWW

Thin-stock follower & Thin Stock Support HOT

2019-02-11 Thread Tim Ziegler
Good morning fellow LOM & WC people.

Now that I found the Rotary table I was looking for I am looking for the
Thin-Stock follower and Thin Stock Support.

I know selling parts from units is not always easy but I bought my LOM 1200
to further my business opportunities and need to move forward.
Does anyone have these items for sale or has anyone made after market parts
for them? I did see an idea on the "Turn Around" site. But I want the
real thing. this is not a part I can get through Legacy. I've tried.

Thanks everyone.

Kind regards,

Tim of ZWW

Differance being the holder is mounted to the front of the router table.
About 2 or 3 from the bit. It moves with the table so no vibration will
get to the
bit before it is cut. Nice thing about this is it is always out of the way

Here is a center rest I designed and use canes and other thin work. The
cane in the picture is 1.5 in dia. by 32 long. Done with a barley twist
with along spiral. I used a 1 barley bit set for a 4 bit twist so it
would not have a lot of spring. I then cut thru wiht a .375 Dia end mill.
I made the carrier from 1/2 Baltic Birch with reinforced corners. I cut
the adjustment slots on my Artisan mill. The white plastic is HDPE. It is
available from Tap Plastics. Cost only $5.00.
The plastic parts are 7 long so there would not be any vibration or
bumping. It is always in contact with the part. I cut small V in the
Plastic to hold the part and have 1.25 in spacing between the blocks. This
allowed me to cut with the 1 barley twist bit while still supporting the
Cane. I provides both lateral and vertical support.
Please excuse the quality of the picture. I had to reduce the pixels to
get the system to accept it.

This looks like an affordable flexible solution. What do you guys think?

Re: Thin Stock Support

2012-12-02 Thread curt george
Thanks Gene
It sounds pretty good, If you can find it, please copy and post the video to
the group?
I too will look for it as well.
I have some ideas that I will be also tiring ,( Lets see if I can make a better
mouse trap?) (so to speak.) ;-) .
What I was attempting to do was make a ribbon twist turning.I've done this type
of turning before but not on the length ( 5' ) and it was a years ago since I
last tried this type of cutting.
To cut the ribbon twist you cut from the side of the spindle with a long
cutter/router bit, I went form 2 1/4 to something close to 3/4 on a taper
before I stopped.although I was taking light cuts, the vibration was to much.
I know this was an extreme turning but ... it was just for fun. (in this case
No Fun. since it did not turn out.) ;-(
Any ideas on making a better steady rest Please let me know? I will let you all
know how everything works out latter.
Have a good night all.
C.A.G.

to the group?
I too will look for it as well.
I have some ideas that I will be also tiring ,( Lets see if I can make a
better mouse trap?) (so to speak.) ;-) .
What I was attempting to do was make a ribbon twist turning.I've done
this type of turning before but not on the length ( 5' ) and it was a
years ago since I last tried this type of cutting.
To cut the ribbon twist you cut from the side of the spindle with a long
cutter/router bit, I went form 2 1/4 to something close to 3/4 on a taper
before I stopped.although I was taking light cuts, the vibration was to
much.
I know this was an extreme turning but ... it was just for fun. (in this
case No Fun. since it did not turn out.) ;-(
Any ideas on making a better steady rest Please let me know? I will let
you all know how everything works out latter.
 Have a good night all.

I saw a bit I thank on U tube regarding this problem. I will try to
find it again. anyway the gentlemen made a holder like the one Tim is
writing about.
Differance being the holder is mounted to the front of the router
table. About 2 or 3 from the bit. It moves with the table so no
vibration will get to the
bit before it is cut. Nice thing about this is it is always out of the
way as you mill a long project.

What do you guys
think?

Good morning everyone, ;-)
this is an old topic, But nicely done, this stock support can be made easily by
anyone who owns a Legacy, My hat is off to Dan1931. he did a good job.
This is a good reminder to everyone, that we all can use our machines
better, and we do not need to spend an arm and a leg to buy things that we need.
We can make much of what is needed.
Very Nice! Thank you Tim, for posting this one. it is a good find. and a Great
Reminder. Look what you can do! Its a good way to start the day! ;-)

Thanks Tim
Those brackets are the real trick to making this stock support work.(Not
trying to take anything away from you Bill, Great job on this one.) But
Having those two little tangs hold the brackets in place with only one
mounting screw to mount it on the Legacy rails are A Real SLICK Idea! I
have no idea who came up with that! But who ever did is one pretty smart
Cookie in my books.
Legacy did not have anything like that when I bought my unit. Those
brackets alone would have taken up much of the slop with in the rails,
that the earlier Legacy's had. Man Just think about it, with those
brackets alone, we might have been able to keep many of our Fast Eddies
Happy Legacy customer back then. OWell that's water under the bridge
now!
Just my two cents worth of it. I like it! Its ESP (Efficient,Simple, and
Practical.) You cant ask for anything more.

That alone makes it an A+ in my book. ;-)

The tall bracket that holds the wheels are from the template upgrade kit
like Bill said. The other angle bracket with two tabs are used to hold
the
vertical and horizontal vises in place. The wheels look like roller
blade
wheels that can be bought at sporting goods stores, or you can get them
off
a used pair of skates at most thrift stores. The bearings are typically
8mm
which mount very easily to some 5/16 all- thread or bolt. It should
take

very little time to make a bracket to hold the wheels. I would think you
could get away with only one bracket to hold the wheels.

Re: thin stock support

2011-06-30 Thread Tim Krause
You know, I can make any bracket that comes to mind. Anyone can contact me
off list and lets see if we can make a deal. I offer drafting services,
fabrication and ideas to get your project moving in the right direction.
Your only limitation is communication :-)

  Thanks Tim
Those brackets are the real trick to making this stock support
work.(Not
trying to take anything away from you Bill, Great job on this one.) But
Having those two little tangs hold the brackets in place with only one
mounting screw to mount it on the Legacy rails are A Real SLICK Idea! I
have no idea who came up with that! But who ever did is one pretty smart
  Cookie in my books.
Legacy did not have anything like that when I bought my unit. Those
brackets alone would have taken up much of the slop with in the rails,
that the earlier Legacy's had. Man Just think about it, with those
brackets alone, we might have been able to keep many of our Fast
Eddies
Happy Legacy customer back then. OWell that's water under the bridge
  now!
Just my two cents worth of it. I like it! Its ESP (Efficient,Simple, and
Practical.) You cant ask for anything more.
That alone makes it an A+ in my book. ;-)

The tall bracket that holds the wheels are from the template upgrade
kit
like Bill said. The other angle bracket with two tabs are used to hold
  the
vertical and horizontal vises in place. The wheels look like roller
  blade
wheels that can be bought at sporting goods stores, or you can get them
  off
a used pair of skates at most thrift stores. The bearings are
typically
  8mm
which mount very easily to some 5/16 all- thread or bolt. It should
  take
very little time to make a bracket to hold the wheels. I would think
you
could get away with only one bracket to hold the wheels.

  Hello Bill
in my manual it states that I can up-grade my machine with longer
  rail
but there are not pictures or anything other than the statement.
It looks like you got everything that you've got, right off the shelf,
  so
  to
speak. Even if the parts are still available its hard to order parts
  with
out seeing if they are the same as what you have. (In short no order
no.
  No
part number. No names,or ??? Makes it very hard to get what you want.)
I will do some home work and see if I can come up with something. ;-)
  Thanks for sharing with us.

the 90 degree brackets I ordered from legacy they were used on a
older
model machine the 200 I believe it was. and the strait brackets are
   from
the template rail mounting kit an extra legacy used to sell, I don't
  know
if they would still have any I bought several of them once, it was
the
cheapest way of getting some extra rail at the time to lengthen my
   model
   900. each one came with the brackets so I ended up with several of
  them,
there should be pictures of the kit in your legacy manual that came
   with
the machine.I'm sure you guys over there would have a lot easier job
   getting these parts now if
available than I would way over here in Australia

Did you buy them or did they come with you machine? I don't have
any
  that
look like that and defiantly no extras that look like it.

   Thanks
