Re: wood lathe fall away tail stock

2024-01-27 Thread Tim Ziegler
Hey Bill,

Very good looks like that works extremely great.
I have gone back and forth on purchasing one for my lathe too.
Like you said when you have other things to take off and on it's nice to
have it swing away.
Great work on the install too.
Thanks for the video and the share.

Re: wood lathe

2023-06-26 Thread Dexter Bland
Your digital control comment reminds me of a story I read several years ago
about a guy that bought a digital control lathe, set it up with a big chunk
of wood, starts to turn it on, then turns to his son and says "lets put on
our safety glasses". He starts the lathe not realizing the speed setting in
10x faster than he thought. The machine is so out of balance it starts
walking across the floor, throws the chunk of wood thru the garage wall,
falls over and unplugs itself. His son then says to his dad, "good thing we
put on our safety glasses."!

Good Morning Bill,

I do like my Laguna, a one of the main reasons I picked it was because of its
features and price point. I did have to contact customer service for a small
nut that I lost for light the is attached to my lathe. They send me one quickly
no questions asked. My friend and mentor has a Oneway as his main lathe, but
has a Laguna and and few others. I have a hard time with his Oneway because I
am not used to it. Bottom line there are a lot great lathes, but like others
said get the biggest you can afford, other wise you might regret it.

Re: wood lathe

2023-06-24 Thread Owner
Some good advice from Ron Brown:

How To Become An Overnight Success

As a new turner, you are anxious to become as good as some of the names you
hear regularly; Nick Cook, Richard Raffan, David Ellsworth, Kirk Deheer, Mike
Mahoney, Cindy Drozda, and many more.

So, you develop a plan:

1.You buy a top-of-the-line lathe, a Powermatic 4224, a Robust American
Beauty, A OneWay 2436, a Laguna 2436, or something in that same category
costing between $5,000 and $12,000.

2.Next, you spend whatever it takes to get the very best lathe chisels,
Robert Sorby, Carter and Sons, Crown, Ashley Iles, Doug Thompson, etc., and you
need at least one of everything they sell in multiple sizes because great tools
make great turners, or so you’ve been told.

3.Then you must set up your sharpening station with a slow-speed grinder,
sharpening jig, and not one, but two CBN wheels.

4.You’ve watched untold hours of YouTube videos, including some of mine, so
you have tons of head knowledge under your belt. You have many ideas on how
this turning thing works; now is your time to shine!

Wait! You are still not a turner.

You are a student and you will be for the next several years. Granted, you are
a student with lots of nice expensive gadgets, but you are missing the one
thing you can’t buy: Time in the seat, or hours in front of the lathe. You are
a novice until you have put in the time, made the mistakes, tried something 10
different ways, made 100 pieces of the same thing, and made 10 different kinds
of turned items.

The wonderful thing about turning is that even our first pieces while we are
learning can turn out pretty good and it is just a given that our wives (and
most of our kids) will love whatever we make. But you are still a beginner.
That isn’t a bad thing, it is just a thing. Over the years I’ve met thousands
of folks that had been turning for 20 years. The problem was that they had one
year of experience 20 times over!

Since you can’t get around the time needed to become an overnight expert, a
master, or someone to pay attention to, just put in the time as a student to
acquire those skills, make those mistakes, and perfect those methods and
techniques. It is all part of the journey that will one day result in your
overnight success. Remember that wherever you go, there you are.

Have been turning for 60 years there are more lathes manufactures and models
out there than you can count, my advice is to buy the biggest and heaviest one
you cant afford or youll regret it.
For me my go to lathe is a Powermatic 4224B couldd be happier as there's
nothing it cant turn big or small it also has a built in vacuum chuck
system and indexing.

Mass is critical if your turning anything bigger than spindles.

Some fellow club members have reported issues with Laguna electronics as has
the local Woodcraft that sells them.

Have a Jet 1220 VS with stand Im will to sell for a reasonable price
with many accessories I used to take on the road for demos but I no longer do
that.

I would add to Michael’s advice: get a digital lathe. The ability to control
the speed from a few revolutions (e.g. for sanding) to full speed without
having to stop and manually change bands makes turning so much easier and more
enjoyable.

Re: wood lathe

2023-06-23 Thread Owner
Have been turning for 60 years there are more lathes manufactures and models
out there than you can count, my advice is to buy the biggest and heaviest one
you can’t afford or you’ll regret it.
For me my go to lathe is a Powermatic 4224B could’d be happier as there's
nothing it can’t turn big or small it also has a built in vacuum chuck system
and indexing.
Mass is critical if your turning anything bigger than spindles.
Some fellow club members have reported issues with Laguna electronics as has
the local Woodcraft that sells them.

Have a Jet 1220 VS with stand I’m will to sell for a reasonable price with many
accessories I used to take on the road for demos but I no longer do that.

Re: Rose Engine for Jet wood lathe

2022-08-24 Thread 'Curt George' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
 Hello and Good morning everyone.
The Apples to Apples, quote I stated earlier was not said clear enough.
When comparing two things that are different, Things can get very
confusing.(you loose your focus, due to the detail.)  So I always try to
compare, Two objects that are different but similar to each other.   The
Holtzapffel  lathe, and the Legacy Ornamental Mill. are more the alike, but
still different. then trying to compare the Rose Engine lathe to the Legacy. The
Holtzapffel lathe used lots of jigs/tools to make the Ornamental element work.
(yes the Holtz. used a fly cutter and the Legacy uses a router to cut, but that
is the biggest difference between the two machines.)So when I said "Apples to
Apples, I meant to look at the jigs that made it work.We as a group have always
shared info. on how we do what we do. If you build a better jig, The main goal
is to better yourself. and to help others understand, so they too can learn
form the experience.
I suggest to look at what the "Masters" of the past have done, for the
inspiration, and perhaps copy some of the ways they did what they did.  And use
it YOUR way. ;-)
got'a run now.
Have a good day.

Re: Rose Engine for Jet wood lathe

2022-08-23 Thread 'Curt George' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
 Thank you Tim.
One more note on this line of thought.
The ART is more then what is just popular today. When I started wood turning,
spindles were all anyone did. Today most WOOD lathe turners only do, Pen or
bowls, and spindles have been all but forgotten.
The very same thing has happened in the OT world.  Rose Engine lathes are the
King. but the Original Holzapfel lathe's (which is a closer cousin to the
Legacy and the modern Steel lathe.)  is all but
forgotten.http://www.lathes.co.uk/holtzapffel/ .
The reason I state this, is for two reasons,  First is for Learning, If you
want to compare the OT world to the OM world, You need to think of the concept
.Apples to Apples. And secondly.  The Legacy may not be the KING, but it is one
Awesome tool, that is way more Royal then the ordinary wood lathe and other
wood working tools that are normally sold and used today in most wood shops. ;-)
Have a great day everyone.talk to you all more latter.

Now we may have to dig up the Horizontal Router mounting systems we made Bill.

Lets do threading 101.

I think that would be a lot of fun.

the rest of how to thread internal and external is here on my video it would be

I don’t think there was ever how to do it posted to the group there wasn’t much

Has anyone seen or experienced this item
<http://bicitywoodturners.com/newsletters/articles/Rose_Engine.pdf> ? I
stumbled into it looking at how to machine wood threads on the REVO and was
amazed.

In short, it's a rose engine that bolts directly to a Jet 1014 standard lathe
and offers almost all the capabilities of the rose engine lathe of antiquity.
For those wearing hip boots and waders in this OM business, this seems like the
cat's meow.

I'm not deep into extensive ornamental turning as it is a very specialty item
that takes a lot of time, but for those with creative energy to burn, this
would be a fun specialty.

BTW, haven't found internal or external threading discussions yet

Yes that is the modern rose
http://bicitywoodturners.com/newsletters/articles/Rose_Engine.pdf
They have been around almost as long as Legacy.
There are a number of company's who make DIY OT stuff, Like the  Medium Density
Fiberboard  (MDF Rose) made by Jon McGill.https://mdfre2.colvintools.com/
Rambling Rose. http://ornamentalroseengine.com/download/rre/index.htm

And the https://lindowmachineworks.com/ Lindow White machine...and one of my
favorites (names, by Bill Ooms) the CORN Lathe.
https://www.billooms.com/cornlathe/index.html Its a CNC unit.
To name a few.
Legacy was in good knitch, It did much the same things as all these machines
but it was also a little differently then what most in the OT world made
things.
Thanks Bill for posting your screw and wing nut.  Things like your posting,
Just go to show/Remind everyone, That its the Artist who makes the art, not the

The trick to getting a finer thread with a only having the standard gears would
be a multiple start thread just like you do a 3 or 4 start spiral it would be a
very fast 2 inch pitch but like 4 starts thus keeping the tread depth smaller.
But you really need the .25 reduction gear set

Thank you, Bill. I had found your video and appreciated it. I watched it
again from your link here. I don't have more than the standard gears that came
with the REVO, so getting a suitable thread pitch is something I will have to
study. Eventually my goal is to be able to mill wood threads from 1" diameter
to the capacity of the REVO using appropriate pitches. There are no SAE
standards I presume. I'll have to do some m-m-mmm-m-math to get there. Has the
table of gear ratios to use for certain pitches been made or do I have to
invent the wheel?

RE: Rose Engine for Jet wood lathe

2022-08-22 Thread bulkeley
Ps here is one old slide show video I found in the archives of me making a
bolt, nut and even a wing nut

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1RPgkrqiBk
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1RPgkrqiBk_channel=aussiman77181>
_channel=aussiman77181

I forgot about this one and it was done on the revo too

Now before you ask Dan the bits to use are

https://www.magnate.net/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=756 for large internal
threads (remove the bearing )

and this one https://www.magnate.net/SearchResults.asp?Cat=230811 for fine
threads, small hole and short depth internal threads

and for external threads
https://www.magnate.net/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=706

wooden threads were traditionally 90 degrees for more strength and less
chipping at the point of the thread

instead of the metal 60 or 55 degrees.

And always choose a wood that is not prone too chipping.

Re: Rose Engine for Jet wood lathe

2022-08-22 Thread Dan Krager
Thank you, Bill. I had found your video and appreciated it. I watched it
again from your link here. I don't have more than the standard gears that
came with the REVO, so getting a suitable thread pitch is something I will
have to study. Eventually my goal is to be able to mill wood threads from
1" diameter to the capacity of the REVO using appropriate pitches. There
are no SAE standards I presume. I'll have to do some m-m-mmm-m-math to get
there. Has the table of gear ratios to use for certain pitches been made or
do I have to invent the wheel?

RE: Rose Engine for Jet wood lathe

2022-08-22 Thread bulkeley
Dan,

I haven’t seen that one dan nice find. Maybe you could mount it to your revo…

For internal threading I made this mod years ago for the revo

https://ornamentalmills.com/Bill_Bulkeley/revo_side_mount/index.html

the rest of how to thread internal and external is here on my video it would be
almost the same way on a revo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_l3gTZLkOc
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_l3gTZLkOc=1s_channel=aussiman77181>
=1s_channel=aussiman77181

I don’t think there was ever how to do it posted to the group there wasn’t much
interest

When I did these years ago.
