RE: [LegacyUG] Printing a chronology report

2007-04-30 Thread Gail Anderson

Hi,

I am new to the group and have been watching the training CD's. My question
is not related to the printing problems being discussed; so I hope it is
okay if I ask it here. Can anyone direct me to information that will give
examples of the generational numbering systems that legacy will print
reports in; the Henry numbering system, the d' aboville, the deVilliers.
Some of it I can see how they work but as the generation go on especially in
the deVilliers I am not sure. I couldn't find anything in the help menu and
the training CD's don't address all of the options. I would like to see
examples with an explanation. Anyone know of a source they can point me to
so I can decide on report options. Thanks.

Hi Kenneth,

Could you give more information about what type of information is
being cut off?
Are you printing straight to paper or to pdf?
Is it also occurring in the screen preview?

Everything seems to be word wrapping for me unless I have several
tabs in the line when I get an occasional run on into the margin.
Legacy isn't good at handling tabs. (they are entered with Ctrl+tab)

Also - are you using the latest version?

Another thought - have you set margins in Legacy so that it is trying
to print beyond the printable area of your printer?
That is, do you still lose letters if you set the margins for the
report a little wider?

Cheers,
Cathy

[LegacyUG] Editing PDFs was Question about PDF readers: Nitro

2007-04-30 Thread Jim Liddil

To get this back on track the issue was about how to create large charts
from PDFs in Legacy. You have to have PDF software that can distill a PDF to
do this. Or to convert rtf to PDF requires a distiller. Planet PDF has a
bunch of products listed. But the bottom line appears that to do large
charts one needs an add on.

The file reads fine on Google, if slowly, but downloaded as a .pdf

many pages were blank. NitroPDF reported no problem and all data was
present, but some pages were apparently scanned in color, others either
scanned to single bit (i.e. black and white text) or rendered that way
by NitroPDF.

Disturbing, a click on the install icon of the downloaded NitroPDF

not. After rebooting the following morning, I attempted to view a .pdf
file by clicking it and Acrobat 5 was invoked but with the warning that
.pdf files could not be viewed from within my browser (Firefox 2)
because of a configuration problem, with an offer to correct it, which I
permitted.

My impression is that NitroPDF is a product of some really sharp
programming and likely unusually capable as a reader. The features
don't seem to offer direct solutions to the problems recently discussed
with Legacy exports, but the editing tools available plus the ability to
export to Microsoft Word format (and presumably re-import) might
aggregate to what's wanted. That said, NitroPDF isn't software I want
on my computer. I don't trust code that tries to drill through my
firewall and certainly don't anything which succeeds in doing so without
leaving fingerprints. Nor do I like my browser being reconfigured. And
as a final note - NitroPDF does not come with an uninstaller...

Re: [LegacyUG] Exporting Living

2007-04-30 Thread Stuart Gregory

C.G.

I think your best choice is to load your ged file into a text editor
and do a global search and replace. I presume that is what you are
doing now. This is a relatively simple process.

Another way is to resurrect all your dead persons in Legacy by making
them living. But this is not nearly as simple as the text editor
approach.

Another way is to choose a charting program that correctly imports a
valid ged file.

Most software does this now. Adobe 7 and 8 both require net access to

don't seem to offer direct solutions to the problems recently discussed
with Legacy exports, but the editing tools available plus the ability to
export to Microsoft Word format (and presumably re-import) might
aggregate to what's wanted.

Re: [LegacyUG] Question about PDF readers: Nitro

2007-04-30 Thread kb
Following this thread, I decided to test NitroPDF with a known problem
file for my Acrobat 5 reader (on XP). The file is a Google digitized
19th century transcript of a 1623 Herald's Visitation (Google>Book
Search>argument: "visitation of the county of somerset in the year 1623").

The file reads fine on Google, if slowly, but downloaded as a .pdf
brought a warning from Acrobat 5 of a loading problem (9). When viewed,
many pages were blank. NitroPDF reported no problem and all data was
present, but some pages were apparently scanned in color, others either
scanned to single bit (i.e. black and white text) or rendered that way
by NitroPDF.

Disturbing, a click on the install icon of the downloaded NitroPDF
Professional free trial brought an immediate attempt to communicate to
the Internet. That was trapped by my firewall (Comodo), and I denied
access, after which the install wizard started. Install was rather slow
and seemed to do a lot with the Registry. When it finished, my default
browser (previously shut down) was invoked with connection to a NitroPDF
web page. My Firewall should have trapped and reported that - but did

Re: [LegacyUG] Advising a German on installing Legacy6

2007-04-30 Thread ronald ferguson

Cecelia,

I would not have thought so, but haven't tried using Legacy in another
language. One thing, though, I suspect that the keyboard short cuts will not
be the same because (a) I expect you have an English keyboard and (b) The
initial letter of the German function will be different.

I think I have answered my own questions

I have now run Legacy6Dictionaries (and am worried no longer), and enabled
Legacy 6.0 to "see" the Help File by copying the chm file to the same
folder.

And I have found the English help file - I had not realised that there was
a
difference between the versions of Legacy6Setup.exe from the English and
the

German sites.

Does anyone know how closely the help files relate to each other, or
whether I
will have problems running the German version of Legacy 6 in English, using
the
English Help File? (It seems the best way to emulate my acquaintance's
set-up.
I don't expect problems, or, indeed, that anyone else has tried , but
it

seemed worth asking, just in case.)

RE: [LegacyUG] Charting recommendations

2007-04-30 Thread Sherril Dysart
I once printed a pedigree chart using Family Tree Maker that was taped
together and then taken to a blueprint business where it was printed on a
plotter. They enlarged it 3X the original size so it turned out a whopping
3 feet high and 18 feet long! It was wonderful because the fonts enlarged
to about an inch high. It was easy to read and allowed for folks to study
it and add corrections/additions via post it notes. The nice thing was it
only cost me $5.

Sherri

The charting deficiencies are exasperating. I wish they would team up with
AutoCAD to create some software that would allow much more to be done in
this area. The charts and trees are probably the most popular keepsakes at
family reunions. I think there's a big demand for these.

At our last family reunion I used Charting to generate a part of our family
tree. It came out to 11 pages that I taped together and hung on the wall.
The font was microscopic, so it was of limited use. And it wasn't possible
to move things around. The rolls of paper that plotters used could generate
sheets as long as anyone could want.

RE: [LegacyUG] Exporting Living

2007-04-30 Thread C.G. Ouimet

Thanks. I didn't intend to suggest the "DEAT Y" tag was incorrect, only that
it created problems in FTM with the creation of blank Locations instead of
non Locations. Like I said I have a lot of issues with FTM and this is a
small one.

C.G.

I'm confused by your request. If you are exporting non-living people, why
would you want to delete the tag

DEAT Y

Legacy is creating the correct Gedcom tag in this instance, if the person
is marked as non-living but has no death date.

If you delete the DEAT tag, FTM would (should) import that person as a
living person. Is that what you want? Or is FTM not importing correctly the
DEAT tag as it should?

Methinks the problem lies with FTM!

Re: [LegacyUG] Large Format Printing

2007-04-30 Thread Donna Brook

Hi

Can anyone help with a problem I have when printing a Family Group Report
page. For some reason, it cuts off the text and lines three-quarters of the
way down the page e.g. it will print the Child's name and all the text but
the lines and border belonging ot this page are printed print over on the
next page.

If anyone can assist, I would be really grateful. I use Legacy 5.

To fit more people on a reasonable sized wall chart, you need the ability
to move branches and families around so you don't end up with 12 ft long
and a few inches high.

You can do this in TreeDraw. I keep siblings all on the same level but
stagger their children or descendants. With use, you get pretty quick at
grouping and ungrouping in order to shift people and groups around.

I use different coloured connecting lines for each major branch so the
chart can be followed pretty easily. To do this I don't import everyone I
want to chart at the same time but import in groups.

But I've only charted about 500 people.

That's why I'm always bemused by people asking for a "chart everyone"
ability - or report everyone. Quite unmanageable and my file isn't
anything near as big as many. I've about 11,000 people in my file.

Cheers,
Cathy

This may be neither here nor there, but somewhere in the Charting
Companion instructions it says that something like only 400 or 500 people
can be adequately charted at a time, and I believe that now. I tried a
file of 1800 people on a Kinko's plotter, and it printed to a sheet 12 ft
long but only few inches high in font too small to read.
