Re: [LegacyUG] error 530

2007-07-18 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Ellaine,

Following Sherry's comments on Xceedzip.dll, which is a dll I am not
familiar with, I had to do some research!

Yes, it would seem that it is possible for this dll to be taken over by a
worm but if your AV and Spyware software is up to date and regularly run and
show no problems this is unlikely.

More likely is that you have downloaded some software which has installed a
different version of this dll and it is either old or not installed properly
(in any event I would not be too happy/confident in the software supplier).

It is not possible just to exchange this dll for another version as it has
to be installed on your computer and registered. Usually the registration
will be done automatically during the installation and it maybe that this is
where the problem arose.

I suggest you run the free scan on this site
http://www.dynamiclink.nl/htmfiles/rframes/info_dll/info_x/34.htm
to see what they say about this dll on your computer. If you do need to
replace it they charge around $13US. I do not know of a free version of this
dll. They do state that they are offering the original producer's version
and this is important.

Although I have used this site myself for other things and found it to be
reliable, I do emphasise that I cannot accept responsibility for the outcome
and their service.

Yes I am going into Legacy filebackup or filerestore. The computer has
only been owned by myself - it is a Dell and is about three years old.
Prior to just a week or so ago I was able to go into Legacy under file and
create a backup and also go into file and click on restore a family file
and it all worked fine. I save to varoius drives - D, a memory stick in E
and F and of course C. Do you think this could be some sort of a virus?

Elaine,

As has been said before this is usually a network error so could you
clarify some points for me:
When you say in para 2) restore a family file do you mean using
FileRestore?
When you try to save the back to what drive and folder is it being saved
(in the box at the top)?
Have you ever managed to back-up or restore using this Desk Top - is it a
used one which has come from a company - have you only just obtained it?

This error strongly suggests that the computer has previously been used on
a network (or currently is) and you do not have the rights to use the
back-up facilities.

Dear Ron, Cathy, Jack and Legacy support:
I have spent some time working with this error in the hopes that if I
understand it better I can give to you good folks some helpful
information:
1) The error appears when go into the Legacy program and I try to either
backup a family file or restore a family family file on my desktop
computer ONLY -NO PROBLEM IN DOING EITHER ON MY LAPTOP.
2) I am going into legacy, clicking on file and selecting either back up
a family file or restore a family file. - all goes well until I click
save and then the following error appears:
3)Backup error: 530 - the license key required to use the control was not
found or is invalid. Make sure you have called the license method with a
valid license key as described in the documentation.
4) Again when I go into the Legacy program on my laptop and do exactly
the same things as listed above - ie bring the file up, select backup a
family file or restore a family file, the program works perfectly for C,
D or memory.

stick.
WHAT I DO NOT UNDERSTAND IS WHY I ABLE TO PERFORM THESE FUNCTIONS ON ONE
COMPUTER

I suspect most people on any list add the other

This may take a while for all the old-address

make the old one bounce an 'address unknown' type

Re: [LegacyUG] Changing email address

2007-07-18 Thread Gary Templeman
Yours is a slightly different attachment name but possibly a similar
problem. In looking at the properties of a number of messages to this list,
Pat's have this line that no one else has (that I have seen):

X-PCToolsMIME: Updated by PC Tools Mime Parser 1.0.0.4

The fact that her message is contained within that attachment is a sign that
somewhere along the transmission, some software is intercepting the email
and converting it to an attachment. I suspect it may have to do with spam
filtering, as a common use of MIME parsing is to protect from potentially
harmful emails. That MIME parsing is probably applied by her ISP. Her
messages come in fine to me, so it is probably some difference in how your
ISP and my ISP then treat the message after they get it. Same with Gmail.

6.0.6470.0 and 1/8/2007 5:09 PM. I would be reluctant to use the version
4.5.67.0 that that site will install.

Straight reinstalls do not always update existing files, but renaming it
will give Legacy the chance to start fresh.

We don't particularly disagree on thiis, the version I have in System32 btw
is 6.0.6470.0 (Sept. 2006). The main points I was making was 1) it is worth
doing the free check and 2) one cannot simply copy the dll from one place to
another eg. from the lap-top to the Desk Top.

Incidentally I have 3 copies as Ahead Nero use it (but call it
Xceed.dll.nco) and have it in their folder in the application program. I
also thought it was not good practice for programs to overwite System32
dlls.

Yes I am going into Legacy filebackup or filerestore. The computer has
only been owned by myself - it is a Dell and is about three years old.
Prior to just a week or so ago I was able to go into Legacy under file
and create a backup and also go into file and click on restore a family
file and it all worked fine. I save to varoius drives - D, a memory stick
in E and F and of course C. Do you think this could be some sort of a

When you try to save the back to what drive and folder is it being saved

I am having a problem with trying to export a file. When I do an export to
a gedcom file, not all the data goes with it. Some data I thought was
deleted, was still there when I sent the gedcom. I need to straighten this

showing up in gedcom) In particular I have updated info on two women.
(death dates and places) But when I look at the gedcom export, it is not

What I want to do is copy my Legacy programme and all the relevant files to

I'll be able to take the laptop to the main library (here in Columbus, OH),
or

to a historical centre, etc. and in-put new data immediately.
Which is better to do... copy everything onto a jump drive (I have one
that holds 2GB) and down-load it onto the laptop OR down-load the programme
from
the disc that came with the manual and then down-load from the Legacy
website

the up-date(s)??? Note that I am on dial-up and down-loading from the
internet is going to be quite time consuming. Also, will I be able to
down-load
the programme from the internet without buying it again (in short - enter

Any help is and will be greatly appreciated...
Happy hunting...

Re: [LegacyUG] exporting gedcom file

2007-07-18 Thread couimet3

Am I interpreting correctly that you are exporting to GEDCOM and then uploading
to something like Ancestry.com and then
checking the Ancestry.com reports and find discrepencies between that and your
Legacy file?

If so, have you looked at the GEDCOM before uploading it. I'm willing to bet it
is fine and that the problem is that it
may take time for your new data to become viewable from Ancestry.com.

Regarding this suggestion, and also a similar one that I believe came in

Nancy,
I had sent in a suggested enhancement for this, and this was the reply
from Sherry:
At this time, the way the dates are formatted in the background that you
can't see, it's not possible to search on a partial date. The programmers
realize that users would like to do this and I hope they can eventually
figure out how to add such a search.

So for now, we can't do this, even though it could be a neat feature.

a new computer, but you should be able to do this in Access if you have it.
Without knowing the internal format Legacy uses for partial dates, I can't
say specifically, but you should be able to use conversion functions to pull
the month and day out of the stored dates and sort or search on those. This
may require converting them to character data first, or pulling the month
and date out as numeric values and then reassembling them in either numeric
or character format, but it should be possible.

If anyone has specific questions on how to do this, I will be glad to try to
help.

No I sent it to Family Tree DNA. It will let you upload the whole file, then
you can check the name list, or save it and then check the family tree by
viewing it after it was saved. This is really strange.

That name does not show up on the Index either. I am exporting the gedcom to
a dna site. The gedcom file is set to
default, when I look at customize the death dates should show up. It has
almost all data on death dates of other
people. But the newer info just isn't showing up. (about two names I've
noticed) This is how I did it, export to
gedcom file, then Ive tried export to Gedcom 5.5 file only, with character
set to Ansi (default), no boxes are checked
, at the bottom it has ALL records in the Entir e Family File. I cannot
figure out what I am doing wrong.

 Kelly,

Firstly, it is not possible for a person to appear on a Gedcom if they are
not in your files. So I suggest you check the Index to see if that person is
still there - you may have had a duplicate.

WRT exporting a Gedcom; when exporting have you looked under the Customise
button to see what you are actually exporting?

Before using such a service, I would rename the existing file and
reinstall Legacy to see if that will put in and register the correct
version. Another person has stated I just ran a search on XCeedZip.dll
and found two copies, one in the Legacy\backup folder and the other in the
\WINDOWS\system32 folder. Size, version and creation time for Legacy was
417 KB, 5.0.92.0 and 1/8/2007 4:59 PM, but for the system file it was
485KB, 6.0.6470.0 and 1/8/2007 5:09 PM. I would be reluctant to use the
version 4.5.67.0 that that site will install.

Straight reinstalls do not always update existing files, but renaming it
will give Legacy the chance to start fresh.

Hi Ellaine,

Following Sherry's comments on Xceedzip.dll, which is a dll I am not
familiar with, I had to do some research!

Yes, it would seem that it is possible for this dll to be taken over by a
worm but if your AV and Spyware software is up to date and regularly run
and show no problems this is unlikely.

More likely is that you have downloaded some software which has installed
a different version of this dll and it is either old or not installed
properly (in any event I would not be too happy/confident in the software
supplier).

It is not possible just to exchange this dll for another version as it
has to be installed on your computer and registered. Usually the
registration will be done automatically during the installation and it
maybe that this is where the problem arose.

I suggest you run the free scan on this site
http://www.dynamiclink.nl/htmfiles/rframes/info_dll/info_x/34.htm
to see what they say about this dll on your computer. If you do need to
replace it they charge around $13US. I do not know of a free version of
this dll. They do state that they are offering the original producer's
version and this is important.

Although I have used this site myself for other things and found it to be
reliable, I do emphasise that I cannot accept responsibility for the
outcome and their service.

Re: [LegacyUG] Idea--an .fdb for background info? Plus book question.

2007-07-18 Thread Cathy

Hi Pat,

Well you can intersperse background information with family data - it
just depends how you want to do that.

If you use the Book publishing option within the Legacy Publication
Centre, you could either insert some of this background info (even
generated from your unique background file if any of the reports
work) as Special Text Entries or Reserve pages for other information.

This means that the page numbers don't get mixed up but the pages
wouldn't be indexed.

If you want a complete PDF book, you'd need to use the Special Text
Entries rather than reserving pages unless you own a PDF editor and
could insert them later.

The alternative is to use the Rich Text options and edit that in your
Word Processor and generate the indexes in the Word Processor at the
end. You could then add index entries for the additions if you know
how. Personally I haven't the patience to take a Legacy book and edit
it in a Word Processor as I like to include pictures and although you
can embed the pics in an RTF file, they don't come over in consistent
size and placing so it's a lot of work. I hate working with pics in MS Word.

Cheers,
Cathy

There is almost no overlap between the two families, I am an only

separate will work very well for me.

Since I can't make a book from two databases, I think when the time
comes I'll just transfer info from the background file into the
notes section for a particular individual.

Still it seems to me one ought to be able to intersperse background
info with family data.

Actually the only problem comes with page numbering, table of

Thanks for your comments!

Hi Pat,

I'm a newcomer to the Legacy environment, but have been a
researcher for 40 years, and have worked with computers since
1965. The issue of keeping separate paternal, and maternal
databases has cropped up many times, and is almost always a habit
carried over from when genealogical records were kept on
paper. Computers can easily keep track of such distinctions, so
why go to all the trouble of keeping separate databases? Our
descendants will only combine the two databases after we're gone anyway. G

Hi Pat,

That's an interesting idea - a database for background info.

However, I think for incorporation into a book, your background
information would have to be handled differently - like in the
notes to locations or attached to key individuals. But for
reference, your idea sounds good and obviously works for you.

Re combining two separate databases in a book

That's why I and many others suggest you have only one family file
that includes all your family. It's much easier to split a file
for specific purposes than it is to combine files.

It's also far easier to make sure that one database is updated
than two overlapping databases.

Maybe it's time you combined your paternal and maternal databases.

church histories, geographical information, etc. Of course, most
of the information I enter goes into the Notes section.
Ordinarily I enter a new subject by clicking Add, New unlinked
individual. Sometimes, however, I have a state as the father
and towns, independent cities and counties as children.

I like having the background info readily available -- and used
to put it in under an individual -- but couldn't always remember
WHICH individual! And it's so handy just to click View Name and
see all the topics available.

I'm not sure I'm expaining this clearly, but I'd love to have any
thoughts/ideas/suggestions about how you handle background info.

Also, a related question -- when printing a book from Legacy,
is it possible to combine two separate databases in any way?

There are a lot of programs that do things that are not good practice.
There are recent reports that installing Legacy breaks the Inventory Manager
program used at Family History Centers, requiring a workaround. A version
of Legacy in 2003 ago did the same thing to IM, installing a version of
XCeedZip.dll that was incompatible. The IM people had to issue a fix. I
don't know if the current Legacy/IM problem is due to the same file
conflict, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Valerie,
When you export a GEDCOM with Legacy, you can have it withhold notes
from the export. Then you can put up just the facts online at a site
like Rootsweb's free WorldConnect. I actually have Legacy export all my
info, and then choose the options at WorldConnect to not publish Living
people, and no notes nor sources. I am contacted at least once a month
by people who find their relatives in my tree. Sometimes I am able to
connect them to others who have contacted me (this actually happened
today), who are more closely related to them. By not having notes and
sources online, I eliminate the possibility of someone copying that info
into their own databases. I don't mind them copying dates and events,
since that is info they could find on their own.

When I am contacted by email, I usually ask for info and ask for
permission to include it in my Legacy family tree file, using them as
the source. But I tell them that I do not show my sources online, so
they need to understand that. In fact my tree introduction says Most
items are sourced. Please email me for complete notes and sources.
After they send me info, I usually then send them a Legacy Descendants
Book report in a PDF file so that they can't just copy and paste (unless
they are very clever or own the expensive Adobe software but odds are
very low). I only select the number of generations that lists all
deceased persons, so that I don't send any private info for living
persons.

This descendants report includes all my sources and notes, but I feel
that is a fair trade to someone who has usually exhibited a willingness
to share info, including their mother's maiden name and their birthdate.
The sources will help them find the info on their own, if they so
desire.

I hope this helps provide you (and the list) with some ideas. Susan

Valerie, I have been struggling with this same issue lately. Many of us
make
breakthroughs in our research only after spending years and lots of
travel
money. In my case however I have been lead to those breakthroughs
because
others have been willing to give me information I would never have found
on
my own.
I have finally come to the realization that I cannot control what
happens to
my information once I throw it out there and while I am saddened and
occasionally angered when I see the occasional case of plagiarism or the

careless disregard for facts as presented I understand that in the end I

have gotten so much more out of my work of research than a simple list
of
names and dates. That something more- the new people, the new
information
the new understandings that I have come to in the process of doing the
work
are what really matter. I have seen incredibly beautiful sections of
this
country that I would never have experienced if I didn't love doing
genealogy. Those are the things no one can steal or change!
Try asking the person who has garbled your information to at least
remove
your name from his website as what he is representing as your work is
not in
fact your work. It's a work of fiction if the facts are wrong and he
should
promote it as such.

 Hi Kane,

You will find a lot of useful information if you search the
 archives of this mailing list.

In addition, an excellent resource for web site creation using Legacy
is the Yahoo Group created by Legacy Users where a lot of general web
site creation, HTML related issues are discussed. You should consider
 joining

that group and posing your question there. The Yahoo Group is at
 http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/WUL/

 Saba

Hi Kane,

It might help if you tell us the URL to your web site (for example, as

I've given mine in my signature below), so that those who are
knowledgeable
 in
these things can take a look and see what they can see, and offer some

advice. :-)

Kind Regards,

I created a web page with legacy. It works well from the browser.
Seems to upload properly to my ISP but when I access it there are
some
 problems.
The graphics (bullets) do not appear, pictures do not appear, and
 the
links no longer work.
I'd appreciate the input. No doubt I'm making a simple error. Thanks
 all
!

My perfered method of dealing with nicknames is to list their nickname
in
the notes for that person.
If I had a person called John Robert Daniel Smith and his nickname is
Dan,
then in the notes section for this person I just enter the following:
John Robert Daniel's nickname is Dan. If I want to find a list of
everyone called Dan I would go to:
searchfind:
look for whom: individulewhere to look: notes-generalhow to look:
containswhat to look for: nickname
second conditionand:
look for whom: individulewhere to look: notes-generalhow to look:
containswhat to look for: Dan
Select clear list before search then click create list. This will
create a list of all individuals in my file who have the nickname
Dan that I'm aware off.

RE: [LegacyUG] Web Page Creation- and associated problems

2007-07-18 Thread Paul Abell
Susan,
If I'm not mistaken, the following is the quote from your message or I think
it was your message: LOL

After they send me info, I usually then send them a Legacy Descendants
Book report in a PDF file so that they can't just copy and paste (unless
they are very clever or own the expensive Adobe software but odds are
very low).

I just opened a .pdf Legacy report and right clicked and was able to copy
and paste with no trouble.

One other way I on your website, include a script that disables the right
click. I did that on my regular website but not on my site at Roots Web.
However, I am also one that suppresses the Living and I also include no
sources and no notes.

I enjoy reading your postings.
