RE: [LegacyUG] How to enter details of adopted children

2007-09-15 Thread Jan Roberts
Not an adopted children situation - but a surname issue just the same. My
late first husband was born (let's say) Peter George SMITH. His parents
were John SMITH and Jane BLACK, legally married, in a loving relationship
that produced three children. When 'Peter' was just three - his second
sister not yet born - his father died of blood poisoning. Although his
mother remarried some six years later the three children all carried their
father's surname. 'Peter' married, had a family and then the marriage broke
down. Following a rather nasty divorce he chose to make a new life for
himself, complete with a legal name change. By the time I met him he was
legally known as (say) Frederick James BLACK. For my entire marriage I was
Mrs BLACK, my daughter is Miss BLACK. So I have entered 'Frederick's'
parents into Legacy as John SMITH and Jane BLACK, but he is entered as
Frederick BLACK. (Of course this is a little more confusing, BLACK being
his mother's maiden name.) I have recorded his birth name as an AKA, and in
notes. To do otherwise would wrongly give my daughter the surname SMITH,
and would show me as Mrs SMITH - I have never been Mrs SMITH, only Mrs
BLACK.
As Sara says, the primary name must be the name by which the person was / is
generally known.

Cheers,
Jan

I think that there are many in the adoption community who would be
offended by the birth name being shown as the primary or "real" name.
Practically and legally, it is the adoptive name that counts.

Re: [LegacyUG] Sourcing Question

2007-09-15 Thread Cathy

Hi Jim,

I didn't see an answer to this but have been reading a week's worth
of emails so may have missed it.

Re finding events with no source listed. This currently can't be done
in Legacy but can be done in GenViewer. It has been requested before
so maybe version 7.

Re finding people with no sources at all.
Highlight all sources in the Master Source list.
Click Show List
Tag the listed people using an unused tag number.
People without that tag have no sources.

To see who is using a particular source. Highlight that source in the
Master Source list and click Show List.

From the Help File ...

Preferred Child

The Preferred child is generally a direct line ancestor. This child
is shown in the child list with a leading asterisk (*). You can
change the Preferred child by right-clicking any child name and
choosing the Set to Preferred Child option.

Because of Vista, you have to get extra help from the companies before you
can download your favorite old programs or installation discs. Everyone
told me AFTER I bought the computer that I should have waited till Microsoft
got the bugs worked out, just as they did with XP. OR, I could have
gotten a computer built with XP and the programs we use. Our only solution
now may be to spend more money to have Vista wiped off the harddrive and
have XP installed back on the computer. So much for sales.
Legacy walked me through the download via the web ONLY. Discs didn't work.
But, now that I have Legacy downloaded, it's BLANK! (I'm shouting with
frustration!) All my data is still on my old laptop with XP. Does anyone
have suggestions for transferring the data?

One other big question, when I retrieve info from
Ancestry.com,
how can I import it directly to Legacy? I usually have to write it in
longhand and then type it into Legacy. That's very time consuming and prone
to mistakes. Thanks for any suggestions to these problems.

working on the Vista problems.

As for Ancestry, if you can, get your information from them in a Gedcom
(download). Open the Gedcom in Legacy, and work with it until you are
satisfied with it. (Do not import into you family file right away, too
many people have regretted that.) Only after you are satisfied, import
into your family file. This is what I do.

You sure can! Do this:

1. Open Legacy.
2. Open your family file you want to print reports for.
3. Pull down Reports menu.
4. Select Report type you want. (I selected Descendant Chart for my
example.)
5. See that button at the bottom of window titled: "Report Options?
Click it.

6. Select the "Pictures" tab and click it.
7. There are some options here, but I believe what you want is "Event
Pictures" checked.

If you also check "Pictures of Individuals," a whole slew of options go
hot. You can then select picture size, all pictures, tagged pictures,
only untagged pictures shadow color, and picture reduction width settings.

Re: [LegacyUG] WARNING to everyone buying a new computer!

2007-09-15 Thread ETM
I recommend that you sit back and take a deep
breath. I have a one month old Dell laptop with
Vista and it is working just fine. I never even
used the setup that I paid for since I set it up
myself and transferred files from my old desktop
to the new laptop.

Go slow and easy. Legacy was installed,
registered, and pointed to the family file which
had been transferred, and works just fine. I also
installed FTM and after an update it works fine.

All in all my own experience with Vista has
surprised me because I had been warned it would be
bad. It wasn't.

Re: [LegacyUG] WARNING to everyone buying a new computer!

2007-09-15 Thread Donna C. Brown
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I hate to be a burden. I am computer
literate in many ways but there are many things about the technology that I
haven't learned or can't keep up with, it seems. I can't set up my own
harddrive for instance, as Elaine suggested. I'm new at working
with Gedcom that Robert suggested. From Ancestry, I've been either writing
info by hand or copying and pasting into a Word Perfect document, then
pasting it onto the Legacy Research page of the family file, so I don't lose
the information. It doesn't work to copy and paste directly from Ancestry
(census, for instance.). Is that what you mean when you work with the
material, Robert? Then after you look it over, etc., are you able to import
it right into the family file without a lot of copying and pasting?

In trying to set up Legacy on the new Vista, I was on the phone with
support. The young man said "everyone" in the office had wiped Vista off
their harddrives and installed XP. He admitted he was dumbfounded why I
could not get Legacy installed with the web, however, and there was only one
person in the office that knew how to work with Vista. She was gone for the
day. I did click around and finally installed it with blank forms from the
web.

Karima, I wonder if the difference is your Vista Home Program. What is
FTM? When I got Legacy installed, the family data did not transfer. Is
there something I'm not doing right?

RE: [LegacyUG] WARNING to everyone buying a new computer!

2007-09-15 Thread Cary
I usually put 2 (smaller) windows side by side to “import” from Ancestry.
Even if there is a way to automate entry of people, you’ll want to be
careful. Earlier today I was looking at a bunch of “ancestors” that
Ancestry says were born in various towns in Massachusetts – before the
Mayflower got there. In 1620 LONG before these towns existed. I also add
some One World Tree stuff to my Ancestry tree that I would never want in
my “real” data. It’s only “places to look” for me.

As to actual historic documents, I now save to the hard drive, than
manually add to Legacy as numbered sources. I can’t imagine an easier way
that wouldn’t risk losing control of what goes where, but if someone has
ideas, I’m interested.

[LegacyUG] Chapman Codes....

2007-09-15 Thread Heather Stovold
And I realize these are standard codes. but it is amazing how quickly
they can be out-of-date...

For instance there was no code listed for

Nunavut, Canada. It is a Territory that was added in 1999.

When I was growing up, the provinces (except BC and PEI) had a 4 letter code
(and most cities in Canada had a 3 letter code). Later on, it was a 2
letter code similar (and compatible) with the USA codesbut I figure
if the codes can change within my lifetime - how long does it take before
nobody knows what any particular code means?

So. I don't use them (well, I do have them in the Short Locations)

[LegacyUG] Ver.7.0 Release

2007-09-15 Thread Hugh Busey
I hope Goeff will answer this one.

I outgrew one genealogy program and didn't care for another but Legacy gives
me most of what I'm looking for. Thank you. I've been using it for two
years now

One of the items I've felt could use some improvement though, is source
entry. I understand that Ver. 7.0 addresses this and another item or two
that I'm interested it. I have been holding up further data and source
entry in hopes that the new version will be released soon. A research trip
to Allen County is sneaking up on me in a few weeks and I'll probably become
overwhelmed with data. (g) Can you up-date us on your anticipated release
date?

As a work-around, if I were to enter data now with just a short name as a
source placeholder, would I be able to edit it later using your improved
templates? Will all the individual pointers correctly identify the new
source data? Thanks.

Re: [LegacyUG] WARNING to everyone buying a new computer!

2007-09-15 Thread Robert P
Check the Legacy site. I believe I recall them saying that Legacy may not
work if it is installed in PROGRAM FILES on Vista. Or maybe it was just if
the data was there. This is especially true if you have multiple identities
on the computer - what you see in Legacy the others that log on to your PC
won't be able to see if you use the default PROGRAM FILES location.

The solution:
Install legacy in a different directory. I don't have Legacy installed on
our Vista machine, but on the other PCs I installed it into a folder called:

C:\WINPROG
(A habit I picked up years ago - long story - I don't install all programs
there, but Legacy is one I do. Not because of any problems of Legacy, just
an old habit.)
This way the user authentication (ie: Vista's security) doesn't come into
play because this is not a standard folder that Windows "protects".

I believe I also remember seeing that you need the UAC turned on (user
access control??) in Vista for Legacy to work, but I may be wrong.

So - try de-installing Legacy, re-install it under C:\WINPROG\LEGACY, and
then make sure you copy your old data to the C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA folder.
Then the first time you start up Legacy, do this:
OPTIONS, CUSTOMIZE, LOCATIONS tab - check where Legacy is pointing and
change them so they all go to C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\ For example:

C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\PICTURES
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\SOUNDS
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\VIDEOS
Probably even wise if the TEMP file is:
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\TEMP (make sure each folder actually exists!
Then do a FILE OPEN and load your datafile from C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA
(Note that you do not need to make these folders all uppercase. Just be
sure you are consistent in their actual folder name upper/lower case and in
what you tell Legacy. If you use Legacy's CHANGE feature, it should match
the folder name with the actual upper/lower case.)

Might also want to check their web site about being in ADMIN mode during the
install. Don't remember if this was a requirement or not, but it is for
lots of programs.

Hope this helps.

Bob

As for Ancestry, if you can, get your information from them in a Gedcom
(download). Open the Gedcom in Legacy, and work with it until you are
satisfied with it. (Do not import into you family file right away, too
many people have regretted that.) Only after you are satisfied, import

Re: [LegacyUG] Re: Gedcom Export

2007-09-15 Thread Evert van Dijken
(also sent to the legacy test list)

Yes, Travel and URL are in the Master Event List.
With all fields filled in the Event Sentence for URL is:
[HeShe] had a web site at [Desc] [onDate] [inPlace].[Sources] [Notes]
and for Travel:
[HeShe] traveled [Desc] [onDate] [inPlace].[Sources] [Notes]

I added a travel and url event to Nathan Brown (Sample file) and made
a legacy gedcom just for Nathan.

These are the lines in the gedcom for the travel and url event:

1 EVEN Test
2 TYPE URL
2 DATE 2007

1 EVEN Test
2 TYPE Travel
2 DATE 2006
2 PLAC Unknown

I did put Test in the discription field for both URL and Travel and
legacy made this the Event name, with Type URL and Type Travel.
I would expect an Event URL (with the url in the discription) and
Event Travel (in the discription train, or bus, or car etc.)
So I suppose this is a bug.

Re: [LegacyUG] WARNING to everyone buying a new computer!

2007-09-15 Thread Robert P

Actually, an even better way to structure the data directories would be:
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\TREES
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\PICTURES
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\SOUNDS
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\VIDEOS
(note that I put all the user data into separate folders UNDER the DATA
folder.)
Why? This way if you copy the C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA folder and all its
sub-folders, you are getting everything. You don't have to worry about
remembering where the other folders are and remembering to include them.

Or, if you have multiple trees and want to make copying/sharing easier:
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\SMITH\TREES
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\SMITH\PICTURES
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\SMITH\SOUNDS
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\SMITH\VIDEOS
and
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\JONES\TREES
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\JONES\PICTURES
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\JONES\SOUNDS
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\JONES\VIDEOS
and
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\ANDERSON\TREES
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\ANDERSON\PICTURES
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\ANDERSON\SOUNDS
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\ANDERSON\VIDEOS
and etc

As a side note - I COPY all pictures/videos/etc that I'm gonna use in Legacy
into these directories BEFORE I attach them to people/events. That means I
use more disk space (the original picture someplace else on my drive, and
again in the Legacy directories), but it sure makes Legacy maintenance and
sharing easier. Also means that if I move the original someplace else, I
don't lose the Legacy link to it 'cause Legacy isn't pointing to the
original!

Check the Legacy site. I believe I recall them saying that Legacy may not
work if it is installed in PROGRAM FILES on Vista. Or maybe it was just
if the data was there. This is especially true if you have multiple
identities on the computer - what you see in Legacy the others that log on
to your PC won't be able to see if you use the default PROGRAM FILES
location.

The solution:
Install legacy in a different directory. I don't have Legacy installed on
our Vista machine, but on the other PCs I installed it into a folder
called:

C:\WINPROG
(A habit I picked up years ago - long story - I don't install all programs
there, but Legacy is one I do. Not because of any problems of Legacy,
just an old habit.)
This way the user authentication (ie: Vista's security) doesn't come into
play because this is not a standard folder that Windows "protects".

I believe I also remember seeing that you need the UAC turned on (user
access control??) in Vista for Legacy to work, but I may be wrong.

So - try de-installing Legacy, re-install it under C:\WINPROG\LEGACY, and
then make sure you copy your old data to the C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA
folder.

Just be
sure you are consistent in their actual folder name upper/lower case and
in what you tell Legacy. If you use Legacy's CHANGE feature, it should
match the folder name with the actual upper/lower case.)

Might also want to check their web site about being in ADMIN mode during
the install. Don't remember if this was a requirement or not, but it is
for lots of programs.

Hope this helps.

Bob

I can't help with the Vista problems, except to say the developers are
working on the Vista problems.

Re: [LegacyUG] WARNING to everyone buying a new computer!

2007-09-15 Thread Leon Chapman
I have been running Legacy 6 on a MS Visa Ultimate version with no probelms
for several months.

I think the big issue for Vista is the closer security features that MS has
implemented - MS wants to install all programs under the C:\Program Files\
directory so it can maintain control / access in a tighter fashion than in
XP.

I have always installed Legacy in a directory as follows:
C:\Legacyx\
where "x" is the version number --> C:\Legacy6\

In MS Vista, I did the same install in C:\Legacy6\
and have had no problems at all.

If Legacy get installed down in the C:\Program Files\ area of Vista, then
there are certainly issues with updates in terms of authorizations and
access to the files.

Install Legacy in its own directory and you will be fine using Vista.

Re: [LegacyUG] WARNING to everyone buying a new computer!

2007-09-15 Thread ETM
The family data won't transfer unless you have
personally moved it from the old drive/computer to
the new drive/computer, Donna. You install the
program on your new computer but it is empty until
it is given your family database to load.

Is your old computer still available and is the
Legacy family file there? You want to make a copy
of it to a CDR or DVDR or floppy (rare these days)
or thumb drive and then use that external media to
install it on your new computer. Legacy has been
installed directly to my C drive on Vista, the
family database is on the C drive at Genealogy/
Legacy6 on my computer. You might want it
elsewhere. FTM (FamilyTreeMaker) is under Program
files.

The Vista file structure is different from the XP
file structure. You will have to adjust tot the
differences. Many never concerned themselves
overly with how or where files were placed before,
so it takes a bit of comparing to get them working
right.

There is a way to cable (you have to buy) and
Vista will help you automatically move files from
XP to Vista. I didn't do it, but apparently it
works well for those who have used the options.
The wizard is built into Vista.

C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\PICTURES
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\SOUNDS
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\VIDEOS
(note that I put all the user data into separate folders UNDER the
DATA folder.)
Why? This way if you copy the C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA folder and all
its sub-folders, you are getting everything. You don't have to worry
about remembering where the other folders are and remembering to
include them.

Or, if you have multiple trees and want to make copying/sharing easier:
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\SMITH\TREES
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\SMITH\PICTURES
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\SMITH\SOUNDS
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\SMITH\VIDEOS
and
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\JONES\TREES
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\JONES\PICTURES
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\JONES\SOUNDS
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\JONES\VIDEOS
and
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\ANDERSON\TREES
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\ANDERSON\PICTURES
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\ANDERSON\SOUNDS
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\ANDERSON\VIDEOS
and etc

As a side note - I COPY all pictures/videos/etc that I'm gonna use in
Legacy into these directories BEFORE I attach them to people/events.
That means I use more disk space (the original picture someplace else
on my drive, and again in the Legacy directories), but it sure makes
Legacy maintenance and sharing easier. Also means that if I move the
original someplace else, I don't lose the Legacy link to it 'cause
Legacy isn't pointing to the original!

Check the Legacy site. I believe I recall them saying that Legacy
may not work if it is installed in PROGRAM FILES on Vista. Or maybe
it was just if the data was there. This is especially true if you
have multiple identities on the computer - what you see in Legacy the
others that log on to your PC won't be able to see if you use the
default PROGRAM FILES location.

The solution:
Install legacy in a different directory. I don't have Legacy
installed on our Vista machine, but on the other PCs I installed it
into a folder called:

C:\WINPROG
(A habit I picked up years ago - long story - I don't install all
programs there, but Legacy is one I do. Not because of any problems
of Legacy, just an old habit.)
This way the user authentication (ie: Vista's security) doesn't come
into play because this is not a standard folder that Windows "protects".

I believe I also remember seeing that you need the UAC turned on
(user access control??) in Vista for Legacy to work, but I may be wrong.

So - try de-installing Legacy, re-install it under C:\WINPROG\LEGACY,
and then make sure you copy your old data to the
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA folder. Then the first time you start up
Legacy, do this:
OPTIONS, CUSTOMIZE, LOCATIONS tab - check where Legacy is pointing
and change them so they all go to C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\ For example:

C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\PICTURES
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\SOUNDS
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\VIDEOS
Probably even wise if the TEMP file is:
C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\TEMP (make sure each folder actually exists!
Then do a FILE OPEN and load your datafile from C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA
(Note that you do not need to make these folders all uppercase. Just
be sure you are consistent in their actual folder name upper/lower
case and in what you tell Legacy. If you use Legacy's CHANGE
feature, it should match the folder name with the actual upper/lower
case.)

Might also want to check their web site about being in ADMIN mode
during the install. Don't remember if this was a requirement or not,
but it is for lots of programs.

Hope this helps.

I can't help with the Vista problems, except to say the developers
are working on the Vista problems.

As for Ancestry, if you can, get your information from them in a
Gedcom (download). Open the Gedcom in Legacy, and work with it until
you are satisfied with it. (Do not import into you family file right
away, too many people have regretted that.) Only after you are
satisfied, import into your family file. This is what I do.

may be to spend more money to have Vista wiped off the

for sales.

Legacy walked me through the download via the web ONLY. Discs

didn't work. But, now that I have Legacy downloaded, it's

on my old laptop with XP. Does anyone have suggestions for
transferring the data?

One other big question, when I retrieve info from Ancestry.com

, how can I import it directly to
Legacy? I usually have to write it in longhand and then type
it into Legacy. That's very time consuming and prone to
mistakes. Thanks for any suggestions to these problems.

I have had absolutely NO problems transferring programmes from my old

Re: [LegacyUG] Can this wording be changed?

2007-09-15 Thread Robert Carneal USA
Using the deluxe version of Legacy (and doing sentence definition
rewrites), I managed to get it to read:

*Jane is not married. She had two children. *That is not what you want!

I didn't play with it long enough to see how to do it to just:
She had 2 children.
I tried making Jane a single parent, but that is not what you want
either as she is currently married to someone.

I also got it to read:
Jane and John had two children. (Hopefully, the reader would realize
that John must be an earlier husband.)

There probably *is* a way to do this in the deluxe version.

[LegacyUG] Census, Master Sources and Event

2007-09-15 Thread Jim Liddil
I've been thinking through how I attach census images. Up until now I
had been attaching the specific census page to the master source. So
for example 1930 Census San Diego, California with say page 9A
attached as the master source.

It seems the better way (at least in my case) is to have attached the
specific page to the source detail for the given person. I'm running
into the situation where I have three different people in the 1930 in
the same state same city. It is far too confusing to attach three
images to the 1930 Census Master source and then put information in
the image description. You can't easily view the picture description
in the Master source view.

Or am I missing something?

Re: [LegacyUG] Census, Master Sources and Event

2007-09-15 Thread Wendy Howard

Hi Jim,

No, I don't think you're missing anything at all. :-)

I do the same these days (having started out doing it differently and
being unsatisfied with the results). The census page is a source of
information, therefore the source area of Legacy is a fine place to put it.

Use the Source Clipboard to copy the exact same information from one
piece of data to the next, and when you produce a report that particular
source detail will appear only once in the list. Remember that "exact"
means just that (which is why the Source Clipboard is so useful), and a
single character difference will render two source details as different
and make them both print, which is not ideal.

The same goes for the images, which is what you were asking about.
Include it in the source area, and it will print just the once, rather
than repeating it for each instance where data from it is used. Whether
you attach it to the Master Source, or the source detail, will depend on
whether you're a "lumper" or "splitter" as we've been discussing
recently. If your image relates wholly to the Master, then attach it
there. But if your Master Source covers more than one page, attach it
to the detail that it belongs to.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard

[LegacyUG] melungeons, etc

2007-09-15 Thread Janis Gilmore
In a vein similar to the melungeon conversation, I throw this peculiar story
out, for what it is worth.

Early in our marriage my husband and I went to the St. Louis Zoo, and it was
there that we saw a most odd family. They were not simply an unattractive
family. They had certain characteristics in common, and were stunningly odd
looking. Broad, flat foreheads, reminiscent of a Neanderthal; very
pock-marked complexions; disproportionately large hands.

I really cannot describe them, and I hope this language is not offensive to
anyone. I have just always been so curious as to where on earth they might
have been from, and why they were so distinctly imprinted. So much so that
when I said to my husband just now (34 years later), "Remember those people
we saw at the St. Louis zoo?" he instantly knew what I meant.

Re: [LegacyUG] Duplex Printing for Books

2007-09-15 Thread Pat Hickin

If not you can print the odd

pages then turn the stack over and print the even pages on the back of the
corresponding odd pages.

Not all printers have that option (e.g., mine) -- however it will print
duples, which of course is the same thing. But I have had a printer that
would do neither.

You do not say, but I trust that you have set Legacy to duplex print and
horizontal *and* set your printer to print in duplex as well. If so you
should not have a problem.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to enter details of adopted children

2007-09-15 Thread hwedhlor
As an adopted child, I have to say that I am in complete accord with
Sara. I am now 63, and found my birth mother, plus a half-sister and a
half-brother, last year after a 40 year search. I am thrilled to have
made a connection with all of them, and love them very dearly. We get
together often, and write constantly. My sister is so similar to me
that we like twins in many regards, and as icing on that cake, Diane is
an enthusiastic genealogist!

Having said all that, I am still John Zimmerman to everyone I know, and
that includes my birth mother. The given names I was born with were
given me by the hospital in which I was born, not by my birth mother,
who couldn't bear to name me knowing that she must give me up after
three months. The hospital added their choice of given names to my
birth mother's surname, and that is how my original birth certificate
was issued. It would be pointless to go by those given names, as they
are meaningless to all of us, and were never used, except by the
hospital. All of my recorded history, and documents show me by my
adoptive name, and to enter that name as an AKA would be false,
misleading and an insult to the adoptive parents who loved me and raised
me, and who I love and respect. Additionally, the adoptive records
concerning me were sealed by the courts, and not available to
researchers, so every record of me that could be accessed by researchers
shows my adoptive name. Therefore it is my birth name that is entered
as AKA.

My father's surname is not a factor in any of this, as he was never
present in my life except at my conception.

In Legacy, and the other genealogical software that I use, I am John
Zimmerman. My birth mother is one of my alternate parents, and when I
print a report showing my bloodlines, I am there as John Zimmerman. It
feels right to all of us, and is legally correct.

Sara Binkley Tarpley wrote:

I am the adoptive mother of a child born in Guatemala to parents who
were unknown to anyone, including the Guatemalan courts. My child's
birth name was given to him by the court system and is not his legal
name now. Why would I use it at all although I see no harm in putting
it in an AKA or in notes? When we adopted our son, the Guatemalan
adoption decree changed his name to his Spanish given names with my
surname and my husband's surname shown as his last name in the
Hispanic fashion. That became his legal name. However, he used the
given names we gave him plus just our surname until this began to
cause problems with working, getting a driver's license, etc. At that
time we did a legal name change.

However, our son's situation is atypical. In domestic adoptions a new
birth certificate is issued, showing the name given to the child by
his adoptive parents and showing them as the parents. Legally the
original name is irrelevant.

I know that genealogists focused on blood lines find this hard to
understand. Actually it is possible to change a child's birth date as
well. This is sometimes done with internationally adopted children
who are delayed developmentally because of early deprivation. Just as
the name can be changed, so can the birth date. In addition, there
are internationally adopted children whose exact ages are not known
and for whom a date of birth must be assigned.

I think that there are many in the adoption community who would be
offended by the birth name being shown as the primary or "real" name.
Practically and legally, it is the adoptive name that counts.

Dermot,

It rather depends on what the person (if alive) would wish. Generally I
would use the birth name as the proper name and the adopted (or step) name
as the AKA. Years ago, of course, UK adoption in the legal sense was not
common and one would see "adopted" kids using their birth name when on their
marriage papers.

I would have no problems doing it the other way round (and do) and in both
cases I make notes to say what the position actually is.

RE: [LegacyUG] WARNING to everyone buying a new computer!

2007-09-15 Thread June
I also bought a new computer with Vista but had no problems with Legacy. I
downloaded Legacy from the internet with no problems. I then made a backup
onto a DVD and then restored my family files from the backup. I did have
some problems with sizing my screen, but thanks to people on the list I
worked out how to get it back to the correct size (I had inadvertently
changed a setting).

Some of my old programmes don't work, some do, and I had to buy Office 2007,
although it did have Microsoft Works installed. I believe people have
problems with a lot of the games

I was told at my computer shop that all the new computers were coming with
Vista and that XP would go the same way as Windows 98. Don't know whether
this is true or not but I decided to go with Vista.

Make another backup of your data and try again to restore. I know how
frustrating it is so good luck.

Re: [LegacyUG] Parent listing - switching between biological & adoptive parents

2007-09-15 Thread hwedhlor

Elaine,

I'm glad that you're not holding your breath, but you should know that
Legacy (and several other genealogy programs) already offer that
'switch' between adoptive and blood lines.

I have all of the data for both my adoptive and biological lines in a
single database. When in the Family view, if I click on the border to
the left of my birth parents, or adoptive parents, they switch back and
forth, as do their ancestors, and that's as close as a switch between
them as I you can get without having an actual button to click on.

Parents and children are parents and children. My

Maybe one day a program will offer a "switch" and

Hi listers,
I've been following the adoption thread and find the way to list
parents interesting. My cousin was adopted by friends, so I list him
in with his biological family, and with adoptive parents.

I have a friend who used donor sperm for her
twins, there was another
participant/parent but it will never be known. I'm sure there are
many other examples of where one or two of the biological parent/s are
just not going to be listed. Then there's
surrogate pregnancies, I
don't have any surrogate pregnancies in my file, but I wouldn't be
surprised if it happened. Tricky stuff for those who list DNA. In
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures a child is often passed
over to a sibling or cousin, sometimes
grandparent to raise. That
child then has more than one set of parents,
but one set of biological
parents. I don't have the answers for these issues, but it will be
interesting to see what Legacy 7 and other
software will come up with
to keep up with society's trends.
Cheers

If you don't include your sources now, as you enter your data, will you
remember each and every item you've entered that needs a source attached
by the time you acquire v7, to go back and add it? I know I wouldn't.

If I were you, I would either (a) attach source information as the data
is entered regardless of what version is being used, or (b) hold off
entering anything new until v7 is installed. I wouldn't rely on
remembering to go back and include the source information at a later date.

Hope this helps. :-)

Re: [LegacyUG] Re: Gedcom Export

2007-09-15 Thread Stuart Gregory
Greetings all,

This discussion again raises the question I asked in December last
year. That is, mapping Gedcom tags within Legacy. There is no way to
find out what Gedcom tags Legacy uses to import/export various bits of
data. If you search the archives of this list using "mapping Gedcom"
you will see some discussion on this aspect.

I think it is an important issue, but others don't seem to think so.

There are other issues of how Legacy imports and exports Gedcom files
which I find even more important. I have raised these issues with
support over the last few months and it is still under discussion. If
I don't get a satisfactory response from support soon, I will post my
concerns here for all to see.

[LegacyUG] Age at marriage

2007-09-15 Thread Jim Liddil
I saw that previously there was a discussion about where to put age at
marriage. Any suggestion welcome as it appears no one really stated
what can be done so it is easily visible. Add an event?

What did you use for Record Selection? Where did you
put your file for Export Gedcom File? I put mine in
'Data'. You must tell it where to go or it didn't go
anywhere. Create file name to send it to. THEN, you
can move the file as attachment, or copy as a
Word-type document, or other file transfer tools you
have. This is what happened, my quess.

Using the deluxe version of Legacy (and doing sentence definition rewrites),
I managed to get it to read:
Jane is not married. She had two children. That is not what you want!

I didn't play with it long enough to see how to do it to just:
  She had 2 children.
I tried making Jane a single parent, but that is not what you want either as
she is currently married to someone.

I also got it to read:
Jane and John had two children. (Hopefully, the reader would realize that
John must be an earlier husband.)

There probably *is* a way to do this in the deluxe version.

Re: [LegacyUG] Age at marriage

2007-09-15 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
I put it in the Source for the info. I make a BIG note
if it is different from the Legacy calcuated age, and
explain my thoughts on the variance. In my Swedish,
they give the age at the wedding, but I found out that
there is variations on how to calculate an age. In the
USA, from day 1 into day 364, we do it in months, but
in some places, day 366 is the start of year 2, in US,
the second day of year 1. Leap year is similar. Just
be aware of other systems. Nothing is easy in
genealogy.

Re: [LegacyUG] Still another question

2007-09-15 Thread Robert57P via Gmail
Do you remember what name you gave it (or what name it was given)?

If nothing else, use Windows' SEARCH function and search your entire C: drive
for *.GED

Good luck

P.S. - On Legacy v5 Deluxe on Windows XP:
File, Export, Gedcom
Click the big "Select File Name and START EXPORT" button near the upper right
At this point, you should be able to click the DOWN ARROW to the right of the
SAVE IN box (at the top of the window) to see where it is saving. You can pick
a different directory from this drop down arrow.
And also at this point, you would assign it a filename (in box near the bottom
of the window). If you don't want to "walk the directory tree" by using the
down arrow, you should be able to put in C:\myget.GED in that FILE NAME window
to force it to the root (or to wherever directory and filename you want).

Hope that helps.

Re: [LegacyUG] file locations was: WARNING to everyone buying a new computer!

2007-09-15 Thread Robert57P via Gmail

Very good question!

Not that I'm aware of. In fact it is generally considered better if you do
NOT put data under a program folder - because if you put ALL your data files
in folders under one folder (MS-Word, Excel, Legacy, etc), it makes an
overall data backup much easier. While if you put your data under each
program's program folder, you've really got a challenge when it comes to
making backups and/or locating and restoring files. That's kinda why
Windows came up with MY DOCUMENTS folder, but I don't like all the other
junk they put in there. Anyway, since Legacy defaults to a DATA folder
under its program folder, I've just always left it in branches UNDER that
DATA folder. But that would be easy enough to change and would probably be
a good idea if you are good about doing data backups and such. So this
would, indeed probably be better:

C:\MYDOCS\LEGACY\DATA\TREE
C:\MYDOCS\LEGACY\DATA\PICTURES
etc
Old school thought - keep each directory name to 8 characters or less for
backwards compatibility with others that may still be using older versions
of Windows. That way if you share, they can use the same structure for the
picture locations and such.

Of course w Vista, you do NOT want Legacy in your individual MY DOCUMENTS
folder - otherwise other folks that also use that computer may not be able
to get to the files. (This is assuming you have individual log-ins for each
person. If you use one common log-in for everyone, or if you are the only
user of the computer, then it really doesn't matter. Or if you do NOT want
others getting into this data, then you are also safe putting it in your own
individual MY DOCUMENTS folder.) You can make your own folder like you did
(C:\MYDOCS or whatever ), or Vista has a public MY DOCUMENTS folder (but I
find that public one awkward to use!).

P.S. - yes, this is the same person that posted the below directory path
suggestion. It just dawned on me that I was using my "main" e-mail address
on a usergroup. And there are many usergroups that can be "farmed" by
spammers and then you start getting lots of junk mail. Not sure how secure
Legacy's list is, but figured it was time I went the safe route. So I made
a free Gmail account. Google (Gmail) is good in that you can set it up
(with a couple tweaks) so you can still treat it as a POP e-mail and thus
still download it to Outlook and thus keep all your e-mail in one place.
I've just got to be sure I pick the correct FROM person whenever I send an
e-mail so I can use my "disposable" Gmail address. Then if I start getting
spam at that address, I just inscribe from the user groups, delete the
disposable e-mail address from GMail, and make a new "disposable" one and
then rejoin the groups w the new e-mail.

P.P.S. - after sending the below I did some testing/verifying. I found out
that Legacy does NOT store the LOCATION preferences in each family tree
datafile structure (ie: the SMITH file does not have its own LOCATION
setting within legacy, and the JONES family does not have its own LOCATION
setting . . . ). Thus you will have to do a bit more "directory tree
walking" to switch from one family to another using the below setup (where
each family is put into its own directory). And you'd have to watch
carefully where you saved stuff. I don't recall this being a problem for me
(I'm just getting back into Legacy after many, MANY months so I'm pretty
hazy) - but then I tend to be one of those "techie anal-retentive" type of
folks. It all boils down to personal preference and style.

I also found out that in Legacy version 5 Deluxe, you can NOT get to the
OPTIONS to change the LOCATIONS until you've actually opened/created your
first tree file! It can be an empty file, but you've got to create one
before you can get into OPTIONS to change your LOCATIONS.

I've stored all data under mydocs for years, keeping them separate so it's
easy to back up all of mydocs. Is there a reason to store data in the

(note that I put all the user data into separate folders UNDER the DATA

Why? This way if you copy the C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA folder and all its
sub-folders, you are getting everything. You don't have to worry about
remembering where the other folders are and remembering to include them.

C:\WINPROG\LEGACY\DATA\SMITH\PICTURES

Tish,

In the world of computing all that "export" means is to put it in a file format
which is not the format of the program which created the file. In this case a
GEDCOM file ".ged" is not a Legacy format but that of GEDCOM, a common file
system for genealogy programs.

As to your question as to where it is, assuming you have always used Legacy
defaults it will be in C:/Legacy/Data ie. My Computer>Local Disc C>Legacy>Data.
If you wish to send a copy to someone else then just email it as an attachment,
in your case to your second computer.

[LegacyUG] Legacy 5 thoughts for Legacy team

2007-09-15 Thread Robert57P via Gmail
I assume the Legacy programming team monitors this UG. A suggestion if I may.
Admittedly these are pretty trivial, but I find the current setup kinda
irritating. This may have already been fixed in version 6 or in the upcoming
version 7:

I use Legacy v5 Deluxe under Windows XP.

1) When I click on the PICTURE icon, I end up with 3 choices:
PICTURE
SOUND
VIDEO
I'd like to suggest another button/icon:
OTHER
This could be used for PDF and DOC and other files that may actually belong in
the "picture gallery".

2) When I click on PICTURE, I only have the option of picking picture files.
No PDFs, no DOC (that may contain pictures), etc.
The SOUND and VIDEO options let you pick a FILE TYPE (which includes ALL FILES
*.*). But the PICTURE one does not offer this.
Thus I attach a PDF file that contains a picture, I have to put it under a
SOUND or VIDEO button. Not very intuitive.
I'd like to see the PICTURE button offer the FILE TYPE also. Of course if you
implement change #1 above, this might be a moot point . . .

3) I click on PICTURE, then decide I want to cancel. As I cancel, my scanner
options pop up. Either I'm clicking on the bottom right button ASSUMING that's
the cancel button (bottom right button is actually the SCAN button) (my bad, I
admit), or I'm clicking the CANCEL button and holding the mouse down too long
so I end up also clicking on SCAN PICTURE once the first dialogue box closes.
The CANCEL button on 1 screen always ends up exactly on top of the SCAN PICTURE
button of the other dialogue box so when the top dialogue box closes . . . my
mouse is right on top of the SCAN PICTURE button. I've done this MANY times,
even though I'm trying to be careful. What adds insult to injury: It takes
the scanner option screens a while to come up - so it takes me a while to
cancel out of everything and get back to Legacy.

Thanks for listening.
And thanks for a great product.
Bob

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 5 thoughts for Legacy team

2007-09-15 Thread Richard Van Wasshnova

Hi Robert,

No difference in V6 regarding #1 & #2. I have slim hopes for improvement
with V7. I like that Legacy showsa thumbnail photo of person but for any
source document: JPG, PDF, DOC, HTM or whatever I prefer to open independant
of Legacy so I can view the source document alongside the edit indiv screen.

Your #3 problem does not seem to be evident in V6.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Legacy 5 thoughts for Legacy team

I assume the Legacy programming team monitors this UG. A suggestion if I
may. Admittedly these are pretty trivial, but I find the current setup
kinda irritating. This may have already been fixed in version 6 or in the
upcoming version 7:

I use Legacy v5 Deluxe under Windows XP.

1) When I click on the PICTURE icon, I end up with 3 choices:
PICTURE
SOUND
VIDEO
I'd like to suggest another button/icon:
OTHER
This could be used for PDF and DOC and other files that may actually belong
in the "picture gallery".

2) When I click on PICTURE, I only have the option of picking picture files.
No PDFs, no DOC (that may contain pictures), etc.
The SOUND and VIDEO options let you pick a FILE TYPE (which includes ALL
FILES *.*). But the PICTURE one does not offer this.
Thus I attach a PDF file that contains a picture, I have to put it under a
SOUND or VIDEO button. Not very intuitive.
I'd like to see the PICTURE button offer the FILE TYPE also. Of course if
you implement change #1 above, this might be a moot point . . .

3) I click on PICTURE, then decide I want to cancel. As I cancel, my
scanner options pop up. Either I'm clicking on the bottom right button
ASSUMING that's the cancel button (bottom right button is actually the SCAN
button) (my bad, I admit), or I'm clicking the CANCEL button and holding the
mouse down too long so I end up also clicking on SCAN PICTURE once the first
dialogue box closes. The CANCEL button on 1 screen always ends up exactly
on top of the SCAN PICTURE button of the other dialogue box so when the top
dialogue box closes . . . my mouse is right on top of the SCAN PICTURE
button. I've done this MANY times, even though I'm trying to be careful.

Re: [LegacyUG] Hijacking subject Re: Gedcom Export

2007-09-15 Thread Robert Carneal USA
In my archives, the record is a whopping 738Kb. When I got that one, my
mind just went, hey, wait a minute It was even completely
Legacy related. That goes to show you what the staff goes through- they
have to open all this. We can filter some of this out.

I believe Tom set a record @ 28KB file size on this list. Not
complaining, just curious. what made it so big? HTML, small hi density
fonts? Only 2 colors, Only 4 or 5 font styles. I'm not trimming
anything but reply in plain text to compare file size.

Re: [LegacyUG] Age at marriage

2007-09-15 Thread Dawn Crowley
I see it beside each person's name on the marriage information panel.
I'm not sure if I did something to get it there or not. However, it
does not appear to print on any of the standard genealogy forms.

I saw that previously there was a discussion about where to put age at
marriage. Any suggestion welcome as it appears no one really stated
what can be done so it is easily visible. Add an event?
