Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Add-on - GENViewer - 15% off for Deluxe Customers

2007-10-12 Thread hwedhlor

Geoff,

Why do I need to buy a third-party program to view the data stored in a
Legacy database? If there is an important capability provided by
GENViewer I would hope that Millennia is working hard to give me that
capability from within Legacy.

Your thoughts?

Re: [LegacyUG] need help with searching notes

2007-10-12 Thread Robert57P via Gmail
Or, it sounds like you can purchase the GENViewer that the Legacy folks are
talking about and use that to scan your Legacy file without creating a
GEDCOM. I haven't tried this program myself (yet), but sounds like the
GENViewer program would do it. GEDCOM would be cheaper, but GENViewer
sounds easier - and this could be a good "excuse" for you to buy that
utility.

Hi Linda,
You can search Notes, but you have to do them one at a time. You don't
have to select a particular individual.

Click Search, Find, Query By Example, Look for [Individual], Where to
Look [Notes-Genreal], [Contains], [Witch].

Or you can export to a GEDCOM (include all your notes!) and search the
GEDCOM for the word Witch.

Re: [LegacyUG] More Help Please

2007-10-12 Thread aseddon.com
Well, I seemed to have solved my own problem. I tried to uninstall Legacy in
the Add/Remove page and received an error message "Could not open INSTALL.LOG
file.".

In frustration I went to my original downloaded Legacy install file and rerun
it on top of the existing installation and now.

Not only the screens have their save buttons (and others) but the search on the
web works just fine too.

So I guess a reinstall on top of a non-working installation repairs without
first uninstalling works, (sometime).

Re: [LegacyUG] More Help Please

2007-10-12 Thread Robert57P via Gmail
Might be bad RAM, bad video RAM, or just a flakey install. Have you updated
video drivers recently? Do you have lots of other stuff running when you run
Legacy (especially other stuff with lots of graphics and icons and such)? I
find I have somewhat similar problems with Quicken if I have too much other
stuff running at the same time. Does it happen right away, or only after the
PC has been running for a few minutes?

First off, try uninstalling Legacy, rebooting, and re-installing.

Check your video card's drivers - see if you have the most current ones. If
not, consider updating them.

Might want to do a scan of your hard drive to see if you have some bad sectors
and those sectors might just happen to be where Legacy was installed. If the
sectors are "soft" (not totally messed up, but just occasionally hard to read
from), this could be your problem. Run Windows Explorer (NOT Internet
Explorer) (or open MY COMPUTER), right click on your harddrive, select
PROPERTIES, then pick the TOOLS tab, and under ERROR CHECKING click the CHECK
NOW. In the window that pops up, check the "Automatically fix . . . " and
check the "Scan for and attempt . . . " items. The click START. You might get
told you need to reboot. If so, reboot and expect a somewhat lengthy process
to happen as it reboots.

Any other programs acting weird? Might want to test your memory (sorry - no
suggestions here). I'm not sure how to test video memory either.

Might want to turn off PC, let it sit a bit, and then open it up. "De-spark"
yourself by touching a bare screw on a wall jack or such (or leave your PC
plugged in and de-spark yourself by touching part of the metal case - and then
UNPLUG the PC!) Then check your memory modules and video card - make sure they
are fully seated. They can, over time, work themselves loose. You can
carefully unplug the memory and video card and plug them back in. NOTE - if
you've never been inside your PC, I do NOT recommend you do it alone the first
time. Get your local PC guru to help you (not just the wise-guy know-it-all
cousin that SAYS they know about PCs - be sure they really DO have GOOD
knowledge and have worked on lots of PCs.) While you are in there, check your
drive cables too - make sure they are fully seated.

While you have the case open, clean any dust out of the fans and vents and
CAREFULLY off of chips and such. Do NOT use a regular vacuum for this! Best
to just blow it out using your own lungs (and expect a big dust cloud and lots
of coughing! - and make sure you don't accidently spit as you blow!). If
Legacy works fine for the first few minutes, you might have a heat build up
problem. This could just be clogged vents and fans - or it could be a fan that
has stopped working. While you have the case open, CAREFULLY plug it back in
and turn it on and look at the fans. Are they all turning? (side note - on
some newer systems the fans don't turn until it gets to a certain temperature.
Also, if at all possible you really should have the case in the same
orientation that it normally sits when running it without the cover.)

Good luck.

Bob

Re: [LegacyUG] Restore multimedia files

2007-10-12 Thread Robert57P via Gmail
I don't have an answer for you, but I do have an explanation. Windows comes
with a basic ZIP utility built in (I think this started with XP, but I could
be wrong. I'm sure it was NOT there in 95/98). But, if you (or your cousin
in this case) install their own ZIP utility and tell Windows to use that as
the default, then the ZIPping and UNZIPping will work slightly different
from what you are used to - it may or might not have a wizard depending on
the ZIP utility.

I don't know if uninstalling the ZIP utility returns Windows to its default
built in ZIP utility, but I would not count on it. Sounds like you might
want to walk him through unzipping it manually (outside of Legacy). Or,
since the cousin installed his own ZIP, the cousin SHOULD be able to handle
this unzipping on their own (hopefully), but from your e-mail below this
sounds unlikely. But IF the cousin CAN manually unzip it and get it
SOMEPLACE, you can then work from there in getting the files into place.
Might not be pretty, but . . .

Might also want to try burning it all to a CD without zipping and ship the
CD.

Can you "gain control" of your cousin's PC remotely? I use the free
UltraVNC and then I can "drive" the other person's PC, but XP also has
something built into it that might work (I've never used XP's built in one).
Or you might try Microsoft's NetMeeting to gain control of their PC, but
that does not install by default and I'm find UltraVNC to be easier.
Depending on routers and firewalls and such, there can be problems getting
these utilities to work right. UltraVNC has instructions on their site to
work around this, but I've never waded through it all to get it to work
through double firewalls (I only needed it once, and that time they were
close enough where it was easier for me just to drive over to their place!).

Here's UltraVNC's web site: http://www.uvnc.com/
(Side note - UltraVNC is definitely OFF TOPIC for this Legacy board. If
anyone has questions about this, please do NOT e-mail this Legacy user
group! Send me a private e-mail directly to me if you wish. I will NOT
answer VNC questions via this LUG. FYI - I'm not associated with the
developer at all - I just like the program and feel it might be a viable
solution for Richard to help his cousin remotely fix his Legacy setup
problem.)

I am trying to share a spinoff of part of my family file with a cousin. I
emailed a zip family file backup and told him to use "Restore Family File".
This step worked OK. He was using PAF but had tried Legacy and quit because
of the learning curve. I thought I'd do him a favor by getting him back to
a superior program.

I made a backup multimedia zip file also. It is to big to send all in 1
email attachment so I split it up and sent just census subdirectory in the
multimedia backup. Cousin moves BackupFamilyFile.zip & Multimedia.zip to
C:Legacy\Data folder.

I tell hin to follow these instructions:
Copy it to C:\Legacy\data\
Right click on it.
Extract all.
Extraction Wizard should pop up. If not stop and tell me.
If it does pop up click next.
Select a folder to extract files to.
In the window will be your file C:\Legacy\data\GaryPetee20071011MM_census
You need to type in C:\ in the window box.
Click next.

He keeps telling me "What Wizard?" he unzips but doesn't know where it
goes.

Now he says:
I have XP-Pro. It is a very early cut right after the Beta was over. I
update it on a vary regular basis. What Zip program are you using? I lost
my free WinZip and now have a free download. Emphasis on Free. As I said
in the email a few minutes ago, I now have it sort of working.

He means he can locate a source document in a very roundabout way. Not the
way Legacy works. How can I get him to unzip to location I tell him?

I have often "dragged and dropped" people from one database to another
in split screen. When you do that, it opens up a little import
window and gets some info on if you want just the person, their
family, etc etc and then it can even go to the merge in the
destination database. Have had absolutely no problems doing it,
although I would certainly recommend doing a backup beforehand (just

Re: [LegacyUG] Picture Quality in Book-type Reports

2007-10-12 Thread John Carter
Most laser printers are not that good at printing pictures - they are
designed to produce either a black dot (toner) or a white dot (no toner).
The only way to get a good image is to use the "halftone" system that
newspapers and magazines use, which basically is printing the black dots
with proper spacing to produce various shades of gray. See explanations
here:
http://www.geocities.com/ResearchTriangle/Thinktank/5996/techpaps/introip/manual04.html
http://www.shortcourses.com/display/display2-1.html

Inkjet printers can control the *amount* of ink delivered in each dot, so
they can make lighter shades of "black" which gives a gray scale.

There are some graphics programs which will create "dither" in a digital
image (dither in a digital image is the equivalent of halftone in a
physical image). See whether PhotoShop can make a dithered b&w image
which will print OK on a laser printer - note that this image will
probably *not* look good on the screen. Look for "dither" in the
program's capabilities (there's also a program named Dither).

Note that the WalMart image is probably done with an imaging device that
interfaces to their film printer, so the image-making process is analog
(nearly infinite levels of black/white/color) - not the digital
dot-or-no-dot process of the laser printer.

Just as an example of how this can be confusing -

My grandmother's sister went back to England from Western New York to
visit their grandparents. She is listed in their household in Morebath,
Devon in the 1891 census "on 5 Apr 1891" but she lived in the US, having
left England in 1884. She is listed as their granddaughter but there is
no mention that she was a visitor, not a resident. And to complicate
matters, she was the informant on the death records of both of the
grandparents who died while she was there on 25 Apr 1891 and 28 Apr
1891. Sure makes it look like she lived there!

[LegacyUG] Picture Quality in Book-type Reports

2007-10-12 Thread Edwin Sievers
I am having trouble getting usable print quality in my Book Reports. I use
"Note" Events quite a lot to describe a photo, and attach a scanned picture
(doctored up in Photoshop) to the event. I have gotten some improvement by:
setting Picture Reduction Width to "Original Size" and scanning at 600 dpi (or
more) and setting my B/W laser printer to 600 dpi with toner conservation to
"Off" but the pictures I am getting are still barely usable. In "Report
Options" I use a picture width of 4 inches (with more, things get all
pixelated). I did send one of the scanned pics to WalMart just to ck it out,
and the print looked just fine! My 4X6 files are usually about 2.5MB.

Maybe I just have a printer problem. I don't use special "laser" printer paper
(don't know that they even still make that) but maybe it is something as simple
as that?

Any tips appreciated,

Hi Linda,
You can search Notes, but you have to do them one at a time. You don't
have to select a particular individual.

Click Search, Find, Query By Example, Look for [Individual], Where to
Look [Notes-Genreal], [Contains], [Witch].

Or you can export to a GEDCOM (include all your notes!) and search the
GEDCOM for the word Witch.

This being the month for such info, I have two or three ancestors
(ancestresses?) who were accused of being witches. I put the information in

Does anyone know of a way to "Search" the notes for the word "Witch". It
looks like I have to know a name before I can search the notes.

Re: [LegacyUG] Restore multimedia files

2007-10-12 Thread Cathy

Richard,

This problem depends on the unzipping program your friend is using.
I used to use WinZip. Now I just use the one inbuilt into XP as I
don't do the more advanced zipping and unzipping I used to when disk
space was more expensive. Both ask where you want to unzip to.
If the one your friend uses doesn't ask, then I suggest he uninstalls
it and uses the one built into XP.

Re which version of XP he has - if he really has been updating it,
then he no longer has the version he began with but has all the
Service Packs and other updates.

[LegacyUG] Restore multimedia files

2007-10-12 Thread Richard Van Wasshnova
I am trying to share a spinoff of part of my family file with a cousin. I
emailed a zip family file backup and told him to use "Restore Family File".
This step worked OK. He was using PAF but had tried Legacy and quit because
of the learning curve. I thought I'd do him a favor by getting him back to a
superior program.

Click next.

He keeps telling me "What Wizard?" he unzips but doesn't know where it goes.
Now he says:
I have XP-Pro. It is a very early cut right after the Beta was over. I
update it on a vary regular basis. What Zip program are you using? I lost my

Art Seddon

Everett, WA

From the Legacy News:

June 05, 2007
Ancestry searching error from within Legacy
Ancestry.com has recently made changes to
the way customers search
their site. These changes have effected Legacy's ability to
automatically search for a person in their databases. Continue reading
for the workaround

For example, click on the Search menu from within Legacy, then click
on Search Internet for Current Person. You can now choose which
genealogy web site to search. If Ancestry.com
 is selected, click on
the Search button. Normally Legacy would then search Ancestry for the
currently-highlighted individual and display the results. Because of
the changes made by Ancestry, you will now receive an error message.

Fortunately, Legacy has the ability to create and modify the "search
strings" that are used to perform these automated searches. The
" Ancestry.com " search can easily be
modified by following these steps:

Once you are on the "Search the Internet" screen, click on the
Customize Searches button.
Click on the Select button next to Ancestry.com
Click once on Ancestry.com , and click on
the Edit button.
In the field the currently begins with http://service.bfast.com
...,
replace all of the text in this field with this new link:

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=0&tips=0&gsfn=[GivenNames]&gsln=[Surname]&sx=&gs1co=1%2cAll+Countries&gs1pl=1%2c+&year=[BirthYear]&yearend=[DeathYear]&sbo=0&sbor=&ufr=0&wp=4%3b_8002%3b_8003&srchb=r&prox=1&db=&ti=0&ti.si=0&gl=allgs&gss=ansmp&so=1&o_iid=21416&o_lid=21416

Click Save, click Select, click Close, now click Search.
Legacy's Research Guidance section also has links to individual
databases at Ancestry.com . For example, on
the Preliminary Survey tab,
clicking on the Local Histories tab provides an automated listing of
local/county histories of the areas in which your ancestor lived. Some
of these books are available online. If you click on the Online
button
for books that are available at Ancestry, you will still be presented
with Ancestry's error message. Currently, there is not a way to update
the link. However, the book is still available at Ancestry, you will
just have to temporarily manually look it up on their site.

If you have any questions about performing automated searches, please
don't hesitate to contact our support team. We will continue to work
hard to provide a future update that will correct these links, but
for
those who want the immediate fix, please follow the steps above.

RE: [LegacyUG] Master source vs events list

2007-10-12 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Richard:

The reason it's hard to get an answer from the archives is because there
isn't one answer but many. Much depends on what you intend to do with your
work. Those who intend to print "family books" will focus on entering or
wording Events so they will have smooth sentences in the final product.
Others use their databases to create Web pages, and this might require a
different treatment. Still others use Events to make timelines for research
purposes. Some, like me, have no intention of creating books and rarely
even print reports; I just want a GEDCOM with thorough, accurate sourcing
for posting online and I don't use Events at all. Then there are those who
want all of the above. As both Janis and Sara said, you can't go too far
wrong if you have a thorough citation for each source; you can always copy
and paste later if you change your approach, although with a large database
this could get very tedious. Best to decide on your goal early in the game.

As to ease of data entry, I create Master Sources at the state/province
level since my family is widely scattered and I rarely have many listings
for any given year and state. So a Master Source would be "1930 US Census,
Michigan." Others might split at the county level and have a Master Source
for "1930 US Census, Michigan, Lapeer County" and another similar for a
different Michigan county. To record a census entry, I use the source
clipboard and select the appropriate Master Source. Details about county,
enumeration district, page, etc. go in the Source Detail field. Then I put
the full family listing in the Actual Source Detail Text box, along with any
comments about dob conflicts, name spellings, etc. From there, it's a
simple matter to click and add this census data as a source to each family
member who was listed. Some would also add an image of the census page
itself.

No matter what the method, it's important to decide what you want for a
final product. Then do some experimenting with various types of reports to
see if you like the result.

Good luck!

Kirsten

Im a little confused. Im sure you guys all got this sorted out. But I just
started putting in people, I got about 156 of them and now have put in
Census details. Before I go any further though, I think I may have done it
wrong, as its taking so long. The think is, Ive been putting them in via the
events. Should I be making Census information a Master source list. I
thought I had this worked out, but now I'm getting confused. Im getting
mixed up as to which one I should be using.
Also, Ive been laboriously clicking the Census info into each individual in
the Census. There must be a way that I can make a list of all the people in
a Census, and then somehow add a single event (the appropriate Census). I
find the help confusing.
I searched the Archives, but hard to get an answer.
Tks, Richard.

Amen, Janis! The important thing is to know where that data came from
so that others can find it or you can find it again. At the risk of
having others shout, "Wrong, wrong, wrong!" I confess with fear and
trembling that I put my census transcriptions in the general notes
section and that I do not use census events. I am not recommending
this method, but I had a very large database when I switched to Legacy
from Family Tree Maker. My transcriptions were in the equivalent of
general notes, and FTM did not have census events.

Some methods are better than others; but if you get the data in the
program and show where it came from accurately, you will be miles
ahead of many.

The only thing I REALLY feel strongly about is making sure that you
source

properly and with plenty of detail. I speak from experience - I have some
old, original data from when I started doing genealogy 25 years ago, that
I
have no clue about. The earlier that you develop scholarly sourcing

Re: [LegacyUG] Help Please

So I do the "Search" - "Search Internet for Current Person" - "Click on the

I have Version 6.0.0.155 Deluxe.

>From the Legacy News:

June 05, 2007
Ancestry searching error from within Legacy
Ancestry.com has recently made changes to the way customers search
their site. These changes have effected Legacy's ability to
automatically search for a person in their databases. Continue reading
for the workaround

For example, click on the Search menu from within Legacy, then click
on Search Internet for Current Person. You can now choose which
genealogy web site to search. If Ancestry.com is selected, click on
the Search button. Normally Legacy would then search Ancestry for the
currently-highlighted individual and display the results. Because of
the changes made by Ancestry, you will now receive an error message.

Fortunately, Legacy has the ability to create and modify the "search
strings" that are used to perform these automated searches. The
"Ancestry.com" search can easily be modified by following these steps:

Once you are on the "Search the Internet" screen, click on the
Customize Searches button.
Click on the Select button next to Ancestry.com
Click once on Ancestry.com, and click on the Edit button.
In the field the currently begins with http://service.bfast.com...,
replace all of the text in this field with this new link:
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=0&tips=0&gsfn=[GivenNames]&gsln=[Surname]&sx=&gs1co=1%2cAll+Countries&gs1pl=1%2c+&year=[BirthYear]&yearend=[DeathYear]&sbo=0&sbor=&ufr=0&wp=4%3b_8002%3b_8003&srchb=r&prox=1&db=&ti=0&ti.si=0&gl=allgs&gss=ansmp&so=1&o_iid=21416&o_lid=21416
Click Save, click Select, click Close, now click Search.
Legacy's Research Guidance section also has links to individual
databases at Ancestry.com. For example, on the Preliminary Survey tab,
clicking on the Local Histories tab provides an automated listing of
local/county histories of the areas in which your ancestor lived. Some
of these books are available online. If you click on the Online button
for books that are available at Ancestry, you will still be presented
with Ancestry's error message. Currently, there is not a way to update
the link. However, the book is still available at Ancestry, you will
just have to temporarily manually look it up on their site.

If you have any questions about performing automated searches, please
don't hesitate to contact our support team. We will continue to work
hard to provide a future update that will correct these links, but for
those who want the immediate fix, please follow the steps above.

RE: [LegacyUG] Master source vs events list

2007-10-12 Thread Janis Gilmore
I create a Master Source for the census. I am a splitter, so I often create
a Master source for one person's census. Many people, though, just create a
Master Source for 1900 Census, or 1900 Missouri Census or 1900 Howell County
Missouri Census. Whatever is in your comfort zone.

Personally, I follow the method Geoff Rasmussen exhibits in the Legacy CD's
- I enter the data from the census in the notes section of an event. I like
this because I use the Chronology function a good bit, and I like to see the
census data exhibited with other events - not just in the Sources to the
events.

Others put the census data in the Source Detail.

I know that newer Legacy users get tired of hearing it - but there is no
right or wrong way. It's all about how you want to use it, what fits your
research and your research skills.

The only thing I REALLY feel strongly about is making sure that you source
properly and with plenty of detail. I speak from experience - I have some
old, original data from when I started doing genealogy 25 years ago, that I

Re: [LegacyUG] Grandaugher without parents?

2007-10-12 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
In the US Census each year-decade had different rules
about who to count and the date to do it. Some took
over a year. People were frequently asked by the
census takers 'Who was living here on the date of ?
(may be a few months ago)'. This accounts for some of
the duplicates. My grandparents moved from Chicago to
Indianapolis about the 1930 census date and were
missed by both. They weren't home.

Re: [LegacyUG] Grandaugher without parents?

2007-10-12 Thread Elizabeth Cunningham
I also have a case where a person was enumerated in the house of her
grandmother, and a month later was enumerated with her father. The
census taking in New Jersey that year must have been slow, because it
took two weeks to get from Phillipsburg to Harmony, in the same county.

The instruction was to record *everyone* who was present in the house

However, that's not to say that that is what always happened. Mistakes

I haven't come across anything which gives the statistical information
you mention, but the details of each Enumeration District are available.
Sometimes you will get something quite detailed like "South side of High
Road from All Saints Church to Main Street ..." naming all the streets
covered and sometimes they are not so detailed, just giving references
to the boundaries.

On Ancestry, you access this information by selecting the Census Year,
scroll down to the bottom of the page and select the County, then select
the Parish, then for the relevant Enumeration District select "View
description of Enumeration District."

may have done it wrong, as its taking so long. The think is, Ive been

Master source list. I thought I had this worked out, but now I'm
getting confused. Im getting mixed up as to which one I should be using.
Also, Ive been laboriously clicking the Census info into each
individual in the Census. There must be a way that I can make a list of
all the people in a Census, and then somehow add a single event (the
appropriate Census). I find the help confusing.

I searched the Archives, but hard to get an answer.

I don't know why you found it hard to get an answer from the Archives as
there must be loads of them there - this question keeps cropping up.
You have to decide for yourself, of course, which method you want to go
with, having read what everyone else does.

Personally, I create Census Events. In the Description field I put all
the information about the individual, in the Date field the date of
Census night and in the Place field the Civil Parish. I also enter the
street address in Event Address and have adjusted the Event Sentences to
include this. For the Head of Household, in the Notes I list all the
other people who were present in the house, using full name and RIN for
everyone who has an entry in my Family File. I then enter the Source
and Source Details.

I then copy that Event to the Event Clipboard and paste into a new Event
for the next person. I edit their Details and in the Notes section I
delete everything and enter "See ..." and type the name and RIN of
the Head of Household. I then repeat the copy and paste and editing of
Details for each other household member.

By using the Event Clipboard you avoid having to enter Event Name, Date,
Place, Address and Source Information more than once for each household.
It only takes a few minutes to enter even quite a substantial household.

Evert,

I tried the search string you posted and it works well. The URL in the
Legacy help page for the Ancestry.com error is a bit different and it
likewise works well. Could you provide some comments on the various pieces
of the URL and how they work? Specifically, is there something in the URL
or that could be added to the URL to set the "Exact Matches Only" check box?

Thanks for your info.

RE: [LegacyUG] Help Please

2007-10-12 Thread Sherry/Support
Because, as I said, the URL is quite long - and several people have already
emailed it to the list. 99.9% of the time the URL gets broken up quite
badly in emails and won't work correctly because it doesn't copy/paste
correctly into the URL field without a lot of fiddling around (pasting the
URL in a document, making sure that there are no line breaks at the end of
the three or four lines that the URL has and *then* copying and pasting into
the field)

That's why I recommend that you go to our website where you'll have a better
chance of getting the URL intact. I'm not trying to be difficult - I'm just
trying to make it easier on you!

Thanks for using Legacy.

Interesting - you should be getting the correct URL with that build and
after resetting the search file and folder.

If I email the link, then it's going to get broken and you'll have a mess on
your hands. Please go to our website at

http://WWW.LegacyFamilyTree.Com/Help.asp > Solutions by Error Description

where you'll find the solution and URL under Internet Searches section.

It's also in the archives, but I'm sure the link is going to be broken
there.

Re: [LegacyUG] Master source vs events list

2007-10-12 Thread Leon Chapman
Richard:
I create a Census event, but keep it fairly simple.
Within the Census event, I use a Master Source for the Census record
with all of the details.
A couple examples of events and the associated sources is shown below:

EVENTS:
 1. He appeared on the census on Jul 1, 1910 in Pleasant Valley Co, KS,
USA. (4)
 2. He appeared on the census on Feb 27, 1920 in Bolton, Cowley Co, KS,
USA. (5) Roll: T625_528, Page: 10B, ED: 50, Image: 0032.

You might notice in event 2 above, the details of Roll:,... has been
included. This is redundant with the master source information and is
probably not necessary.

MASTER SOURCES:
4. US Federal Census - 1910 - Pleasant Valley, Cowley Co, Kansas, USA (Roll:
 T624_436; Pg: 2B. Enumeration District: 59; Image: 15. Wells H. Chapman,
 Age 42, b. OH; Lida M. Chapman, Age 43, b. IA; Roy E. Chapman, Age 19,
 b. IA; Leora G. Chapman, Age 16, b. IA.) Rec. Date: Apr 20, 1910.
5. US Federal Census - 1920 - Bolton, Cowley Co, KS, USA (Year: 1920;Census
Place: Bolton, Cowley, Kansas; Roll: T625_528; Page: 10B; Enumeration
 District: 50; Image: 32. Wells H. Chapman, age 53, b. OH; Lyda M.
Chapman, age 42, b. IA.) Rec. Date: Feb 27, 1920.

Anyway, this is how I do the Census & Sources - I am sure there are
lots of other ways, but for me, this provides a nice clean report
format output.

Re: [LegacyUG] certificate dates

2007-10-12 Thread Tracy Skegg
That's interesting about the certification dates for adoption birth
certificates. In Australia in the 1960s there were still the hassles
of uhoh the parents weren't married when a child was born. My parents
married when I was about two, so by the time my sister was registered,
the Registrar asked Mum if she wanted my brother and my certificates
re-registered to show my parents as married - she said yes. So my
birth certificate was re-registered and is dated a couple of years
after my birth, my brother's would show 4 years after his birth. Then
when I changed my name through deed poll, the certificate was
re-issued with my deed poll details along the side of it. Governments
do strange things with certificates. How on earth would anyone find
my certificate in years to come if they didn't know what had happened
with my birth registration. My daughter's birth certificate also
shows her time of birth and weight. Glad Legacy is flexible enough to
manage the variety of certificate's that are created today.

In Australia, if siblings are added to certificates, its usually
because they share a father. My grandmother remarried and had two
more girls, her other 7 children are not listed on younger two girl's
birth certificates. So the email I read of biological brothers
meeting up because the certificates showed a sibling and they shared a
mother not a father is pretty nifty. Over here, that relationship
wouldn't have shown on the certificate because of not sharing the same
father.
Cheers
Tracy

Re: [LegacyUG] Grandaugher without parents?

2007-10-12 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Richard
It probably sounds odd, but I add a child to the parents A&B and name
the child "Placeholder for A&B's grandchildren", then add the
grandchildren to the Placeholder. I have several of these
Placeholders because I've got the names of the descendants, but I
haven't yet been able to connect grandchildren or great grandchildren
with the correct set of parents. I fill in sources and notes for what
I've done and how the connection is made to the grandparents. As I
find out more details I link the children to the right couple. They
show up in reports, but at least I get the right relationships
(descendant's reports) and just have a couple of extra children called
Placeholder.
Cheers

Re: [LegacyUG] Grandaugher without parents?

2007-10-12 Thread Mary Young
Hi, Richard
Think I'm going round in circles here
This was my understanding
Person A age 60 = head of house
Persons B & C age 11 and 8 = grandchildren (according to at least one census)
There is nothing in the ages to rule out a grandparent:grandchild
relationship. So I would take the census information at face value
until you can prove different. Link them as grandchildren to Head of
House and make copious Notes.

Re: [LegacyUG] Question on Sourcing Help

2007-10-12 Thread Richard Hallford
I agree that all info is relevant, but more importantly, it may become more
relevant in the future.
I have the marriage cert of my grandfather and mother. But recently, a
living relative in Scotland gave me a copy of a "certificate of marriage"
and "certificate of birth"
They are not.
They are headed up National insurance and family Allowances.
It is some kind of extract, in order that someone might claim some money I
suspect, because the marriage was in 1908, but the extract was 1950. What
was on there though was a birtch cert entry number and district. This gave
me the clue as to where they were and that lead me to other discoveries.
Also, this had the entry of where born "Howies Land, Wishaw". Another clue.
So now I look at every document. Mark off what Ive entered into Legacy with
a highlighter, then have struck a Clues category in my to do list for
future follow up.
An example of this was from a 1851 census, where I notices a small squiggle
against two of the daughters. It turned out to be a "u" and meant unmarried.
Cute, sounds like an abbreviation made up by an enumerator, as I haven't
seen it on any others.
Also of course, this gave me a clue regarding date search for marriage
certs.
Has anyone else got these National Insurance and Family Allowance certs?
I think that they are peculiar to Britain.

Re: [LegacyUG] Question on Sourcing Help

2007-10-12 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
IMHO, insurance policies are interesting, but even
more based on family stuff included. All insurance
should show the beneficiaries. Why was the claim made.
These are things that would shout 'look at me'.

Re: [LegacyUG] Help Please

2007-10-12 Thread Evert van Dijken
