Thanks Richard,

I did change the last names as well as fixed the other problems, but DUH I
forgot to run a 'fresh' problem report. I kept selecting to run the
'existing' report.

Oh...and to anyone who reads thisSorry, Sorry, Sorry for failing to
disable my 'receipt requests' before sending. Very, sorry.

Thanks again, Richard. You pointed me in the right direction to see my

How were they fixed.
1. Did you change the last names or put a check in
Potential Problems. It will always return until
checked.
2. Does the child have multiple parent groups choosen?
He may be under the wrong mother.
Do not treat exclude from problem option as an
automatic bad thing. The computer is finding POSSIBLE
error problems, but if it is correct (these things are
accurate), tell the computer that this time, the
computer IS wrong.

shouldn't the problem disappear once it has been

1 For occupations having recorded the full census date
the wording comes out rather unwieldy in reports e.g.
He worked as a Brewer on 03 Apr 1881 Obviously you
cannot deduce that he was actually working on the
census date. Would it be better to just enter the
year?

2 I am working with English census returns. Pupils are
recorded as scholars and again I have used the
occupation event to record this fact but working as a
Scholar in a report doesn't sound correct. Would an
overiding comment such as He was described as a
scholar in the 1881 Census sound better.

3 Should I just stop adding occupations separateley as
they have already been recorded in the census notes.

I realize the choice is mine but would welcome your

I just stared using Legacy 7.0 today (imported my data from Family
Tree Maker). So, I expect to have lots of questions and appreciate
the help you give to each other. I must say, you are a prolific
group (every time I check e-mail, there's 5 new messages!).

Based on the below scenario, is there any logical way to enter a
Source for the AKA of a birth surname that was changed upon
entering the U.S. (Vallerini to Vallevieni). I have not been able to
locate any information in Italy to confirm the original surname
(making a trip later this year to see what I can find), rather, I
deduced what the original name was by analyzing a lot of information like:

1) There is no such name as Vallevieni in any index (here or in Italy
except known subsequent relatives), 2) current family (from a
different family line) that lives in Italy states there is no such
name as Vallevieni, 3) a subsequent trip from Italy to the U.S.
listed Vallerini as the surname of one family member, and 4) there
are lots of Vallerini's in the general area in Italy where the family
came from.

I know I can explain it in each person's Notes (and probably will do
that), but should I also enter a source as being deduced or a
better term than that to quickly see how I arrived at the birth surname?

Thanks

Cathy Vallevieni

[LegacyUG] Creating a CD - Error Message File Not Found

2008-07-07 Thread Donna Mc R

Hi-

I have used Legacy for years and love it. I have had no problems importing
GEDCOMs, etc., into Legacy. My Legacy 7.0053 runs just fine. I am using
Windows XP

I am using Legacy 7.0053.

I use Windows XP with plenty of memory---I can more than one large program
(like Photoshop Elements) open at the same, for example, and I never get an
insufficient memory message when I'm using Legacy.

However, in trying to create a CD. . . . . .

I used the Passage Express free version and then updated to the Deluxe
Version last week. So I am using the version 2.3.40.

First of all, I have searched the Legacy mailing list archives for the
answer to my question, but I have not found it. My apologies if my question
has been discussed before, and pointing me to the right place in the archive
will suffice rather than covering what is old territory for this list.

I have also tried reading the online Passage Express manual and Help file,
as well as reading the Legacy manual and Help file.

So---my question:

I have followed directions and have imported and imported the FDB file to
Passage Express, created what I believe to be a correct menu that works in
all ways except for one:

When I click on the Menu button I've called View the Project, which should
bring up the family file, I get a message something like the following:

File not found;
C:\\documents and settings\ really long snip and then the name of the
FDB file I imported-except the file I imported definitely did not come
from that folder.

I know when importing I picked the correct location for the FDB file and I
do believe I gave it the right function.

Also, just yesterday, the Documents and Images button began not showing
the FDB images unless you click on Search. Before, it worked just fine.

Please help me to correct this---and to understand what I am doing wrong!

I have wrestled with creating this CD for over four days now.

I even finally tried running File Maintenance on the FDB before doing the
import. Didn't help.

I have tried saving to a new FDB both before and after doing File
maintenanceRepair. Didn't help.

I have tried re-installing Passage Express. Didn't help.

I also tried going directly into Passage Express rather than going through
Legacy and clicking on the Create CD button. This results with Legacy
not being open when I tried to create the CD, which I thought might help.
Didn't help--exact same results.

I have tried closing all other programs except Passage Express. Doesn't
help.

I have tried re-booting and starting from scratch.

I have tried disabling my CA Firewall both before and after a re-boot.

I have done virus and spyware scans with CA security, with results that say
I am clear. I have even tried turning off all features of the CA security
center when trying to create the CD. Doesn't help. (And then I re-do scans
after I turn the Firewall and Virus components back on.)

I have tried creating the CD information on my external hard drive instead
of on a CD. Doesn't help. I have tried adding the Legacy.exe file to that
hard drive. Doesn't help.

My original FDB was too large for the CD, and early on I created a minimized
file which brings up fewer images and shows images for fewer individuals
than before, but is other wise the same. The FDB for import definitely is
not too large now.

I appreciate info or a pointing to a spot online that deals with my specific
question.

Warmest Regards,

Donna

P.S. I am doing one extra thing in creating the CD that I really like.
When creating the CD menu, I added a button called Instructions. It
brings up a notepad TXT file with step-by-step instructions for using the
CD, plus a very brief message about the general project---how many names and
families it includes, the date of creation, etc. It also includes
instructions for downloading Legacy Standard version to used with the CD and
installing it.

By the way, I was having the same problem before I added the text file
button, so I know that didn't cause my Menu Test problem.

And I also am using an external hard drive as an extra place to back up
Legacy files and give a little peace of mind. Another thing I am doing
right!

[LegacyUG] Legacy's Wall Chart Printing Service Is Now Available

2008-07-07 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
From www.legacynews.typepad.com:

We're excited to announce that our new Wall Chart Printing service is now
ready to go! With just a few clicks in the new Legacy Charting software,
your custom designed chart can be ordered for delivery to your front door.

Legacy Charting, which is included with the new Legacy Family Tree 7.0,
includes 18 different styles of wall charts, including ancestor, descendant,
DNA, fan, hour glass, and bow tie charts. Each chart can be fully customized
and can include full color pictures, custom text boxes, and even your own
digital pictures for the background. Charts can be printed on regular white
paper, or you can choose beautiful photo glossy paper, or even have it
printed on matte canvas.

To order your chart, in Legacy Charting, click on the Publish tab, then
click on the Order Chart button. Here you can select your paper type and
quantity. With an Internet connection, Legacy Charting will display the
total price of the chart based on the size and selected options. No more
wondering what the cost of the chart will be when you are ready to purchase
it. If the displayed cost is a little out of range, just change the size of
the boxes on the Appearance tab and the chart cost will automatically be
adjusted.

Download the free update
To purchase a chart from within Legacy Charting, you will need to
download/install the latest update, recently released. Follow these steps to
get the update:

- Open Legacy Charting, and click on the Tips Updates tab.
- In the Updates section, click on the link to install the update and follow
the prompts.

The next time you run Legacy Charting, you will be able to purchase your
chart.

Sample Charts
See http://www.legacycharting.com/samples.htm for examples of charts that
can be created with Legacy Charting. If you do not yet have Legacy 7.0,
visit www.LegacyFamilyTree.com for more information. The standard edition of
Legacy Charting (limited to 4 generations at a time) is available for free

As a further aggravation, when I convert *any* Descendant Book Reports to

 Kirsten,
I've been experimenting with this and here's what I've come up with:
If you choose Descendant report from the Books-Other tab of the main
 report window-
then choose Report Options at the bottom, click on the Sources tab and
choose Print Source Citations as Endnotes
the details will only show up the first time for sources created using
the census template on the SourceWriter.

If you choose Print Source Citations as Footnotes, the details will
print for every citation of that source.

 Does this help?

I can confirm that the rtf is missing the source page.

Once again, thanks for checking this out. However, those are exactly the
same steps/options that I've followed and the source citation still prints 8
times. I wonder if it could be a bug associated only with the 1910 US
census SourceWriter template?

As a further aggravation, when I convert *any* Descendant Book Reports to
rtf files, a portion of the formatting is lost. The citations no longer
start on a new page with the Source Citations heading, the text of each
citation all runs together in one long paragraph, there is no spacing
between citations and no period with two spaces after the source number. In
general, it looks very little like the report viewed in Legacy.

I'm sorry to be bugging you with my bugs, but I do really appreciate your
double-checking these problems.

Kirsten,
I've been experimenting with this and here's what I've come up with:
If you choose Descendant report from the Books-Other tab of the main
report window-
then choose Report Options at the bottom, click on the Sources tab and
choose Print Source Citations as Endnotes
the details will only show up the first time for sources created using
the census template on the SourceWriter.

If you choose Print Source Citations as Footnotes, the details will
print for every citation of that source.

Does this help?

entire source citation prints 8 times rather than having one common
footnote

Is this a problem caused by choosing wrong settings or is it a bug? If a
 bug, has it been reported?

After doing a backup of Multimedia Files an error message reports that I
need to go to Options Customize Locations and Test All Multimedia

I received a very long list of files missing from C:\Legacy\Pictures\.

I keep various graphics in their own folders, such as

The interesting thing is that when I go to the individuals using the
graphics, they are still properly displayed, they are not lost, but the
error message is scary since the report lists about 500 *.jpg's.

It would seem that another setting may be responsible if you are creating your

I was going to update my family web pages today and ran into a slight
problem. I am using Legacy 7 Deluxe (latest build - 7.0.0.53) and
created the web pages (Descendant Style) in my usual way. I checked off
the boxes to create a surname index and a name list. To my surprise
both the surname index (surname.htm) and name list (names.htm) were
 blank!!

After a little investigating I discovered that these pages were blank
ONLY if I had marked at least one individual as Invisible using the
new privacy settings in version 7. If I make the individual Not
Private then the surname index and name list are generated correctly.

Can anyone else duplicate this apparent problem?? If it can be
confirmed by someone else I'll submit a bug report - if not then maybe
something is not quite right with my database . . .

 Thanks for any help.

[LegacyUG] Splitting vs Not

over the weekend about splitting sources vs not splitting sources.

Can someone that does split sources (ie. 1820 Census may be listed
lots of times for each town in which you have an ancestor), please
tell me how they title the split sources (start with city then county
then state then list the document document or something else goes first)?

Can you also tell me the key advantages of splitting (I understand
it's easy to find all the sources for a specific town or county or
state this way but are there others)?

[LegacyUG] V 7.0.0.53 - Problem linking parents to child

2008-07-07 Thread Pat Hickin

Dear LUGGERS,

I have had a recurring problem --or several inter-related
problems--linking parents to a child with both versions 6 7 and I
surely hope somebody can straighten me out!

This time, I had somehow entered John Doe as a grandson instead of a son.

So I unlinked him from Jacob Doe (who was really his brother) and linked
him to his father, John William Doe (who had only one wife).
As Legacy has ALWAYS done in my experience, it decided John Doe’s mother
was a 2nd, Unknown, wife, and gave John William Doe this new Unknown
wife with John Doe as their only child.

So I deleted Unknown Wife from John William Doe (JWD) and got a screen
(as I always have) telling me that their child John Doe would remain
linked to the individual at the top of the screen, namely John William Doe.

Fine, that's what I wanted.

However, that’s not what happened.

Once I deleted Unknown wife I had JWD and Mary White (Doe) and 10
children, with John nowhere to be found. This, too, has always happened.
So why is John NOT showing up?

(Also, having deleted his Unknown mother but not unlinked him from his
father, (according to the Legcy pop-up box) I looked up John Doe in the
name list --- BUT
when I brought him up --in the Family View screen -- he had No father or
any other relations!!)

Since I couldn’t link in his parents easily, I decided to do it the
other way round and go to their Family View and link him in as a son.

BUT I was unable to see a way to add him to JWD and Mary White as a son
as he was child #11 and there were just two columns of 5 children each
and no blank to click in. I could have probably clicked in the lower
right corner, but I didn’t think about it. (I had it set up, I THOUGHT
to Best Fit as I’d sometimes been seeing one column of children,
sometimes 2, and sometimes 3 depending on the number of children.)
Finally it occurred to me to click on JWD's screen and give an Edit
Children command which I did. That listed his 10 brothers and sisters
and I clicked on the option to Add a brother, and linked him in at that
point. So now -- at long last -- he is child #11 (he was the last born).

QUESTION: Is there some way to set Legacy so that
1) when I need to link in a parent, it will ASK me, e.g., whether I want
to link in the father's existing wife as the mother OR add a new
wife/mother ?

OR
2) if there is already more than one wife so that it will ask me WHICH
wife is the mother OR whether I want to create a new one?

At some point, I went to Help Add Parents.

==
HELP tells me

“1. Make sure the individual is in either the Husband or Wife position
of the Family View.

2. To add a father to the husband, right-click in the top half of the
husband's Parents box at the top of the Family View. To add a mother to
the husband, right-click in the bottom half of the husband's Parents box
at the top of the Family View. The Add Father or Add Mother window appears.

3. Click Add a NEW person to create a new record for a new individual or
Link to an EXISTING person if the father or mother is already in the
family file as an individual. If adding a new person, the Information
window appears, where you can enter the person's information. If linking
to an existing person, the Name List appears where you can select the
individual.

4. When you have finished adding or linking in the father or mother, the
name appears in the appropriate location of the Parents box. You can
then continue to add the other parent, if known.”

==

So, I re-tried the whole thing. After linking him to his father I
clicked on the Mother space, and linked him to JWD's only wife, Mary
White . Legacy thereupon AGAIN gave JWD a 2nd wife, this one a SECOND
Mary White! (with one child, John Doe!)

This is not the first time I have inadvertently created an additional
wife/mother when attempting to link in a parent. I must be doing
something wrong! But I don’t know what!

QUESTION: SO-O-O can someone please tell me how to link in existing
people as parents without creating new spouses for one parent!!??

I also had another problem with Help, which I’ll put in a separate email.

Thanks in advance for your advice, comments, etc.!

Pat

RE: [LegacyUG] Multiple Repository

2008-07-07 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Christina:

Your question involves an issue of semantics. If you adhere to
Evidence-style citations, a website is *not* a repository. Further, census
data from a website like Ancestry.com is considered to be published, and you
don't cite repositories for published work. On the other hand, you *do*
cite the location where you viewed the census (it's just not called a
repository). And to add an extra layer of confusion, census data found
online at FamilySearch is considered to be from preservation copies and
therefore unpublished. Frankly, I have a hard time drawing a line between
published data online at Ancestry.com and unpublished data online at
FamilySearch.org. It's at this point that I throw up my hands and say,
Thank heavens for Legacy's new SourceWriter templates! If you just fill
in the fields there, you'll have everything you need (with some allowance
for temporary bugs here and there).

The short answer to your post, though, would be that you cite only the
location where you actually viewed the data.

on a USB drive. This folder is labeled Legacy6. I would like to rename
it to just Legacy. Will that cause me any problems?

[LegacyUG] Geo database in V7

2008-07-07 Thread myrna20
Hello Listers,

After looking thru the archives (fruitlessly) I thought I would
ask all of you experts!!

I have downloaded the new V7 and set it for deluxe. Now I want to
download the geo databases. After createing it I tried to
download. It goes to the internet and then hangs up. So, is
this a problem that anyone else has found?

All of the DBs were downloaded previously into V6. Have there
been any updates to the geo DBs? If not then maybe I could just
import them from my V6. Have not tried that so far.

Re: [LegacyUG] Renaming my Data folder

2008-07-07 Thread JLB
Maybe I'm a teeny bit confused. If you have Legacy on your C-drive,
that includes the Data folder. That contains a variety of files that
represent your database. Did you move all that to your USB-drive into a
folder called Legacy6? Is it even possible to do that, I'm not sure.
If so:

When you first open Legacy after renaming the folder, it won't know
where to find your data. So just browse to the right location. If you
have moved other 'data' such as your picture folder you will have to
change the path to that under Customize/Locations.

Or do you mean you keep your .zip backup on your USB-drive?

RE: [LegacyUG] V 7.0.0.53 - Problem linking parents to child

2008-07-07 Thread ronald ferguson

Pat,

To link a child to 2 Parents, in Family View highlight the child in a main
panel, click the parents' icon and in the new screen select add new parents
or select from existing parents. Selecting Add will give you Unknown and
Unknown whilst Existing will take to to the married list were you can select
the couple.

At present you are only linking to one parent - hence the confusion.

Subject: [LegacyUG] V 7.0.0.53 - Problem linking parents to child

 ==

 ==

QUESTION: SO-O-O can someone please tell me how to link in existing
 people as

Just my opinion but...
You should only cite as a repository the place where you saw the information-
no matter how many other places that information may be available.
If you had information from a book at your local library would you cite every
library that may have that book?

If you have a census that is located on both ancestry.com and FHL, would you
cite each with census repository. NARA for ancestry.com and FHL as its own

I think your problem is that you are trying to link parents to a child,
rather than the other way round.

With Mrs Mrs Doe in the family view and their correct children listed
below them, right-click in the children's area and select Link to an

[LegacyUG] Source citation issues

2008-07-07 Thread Kathy Wallace
I do have the manual and the training cds for version 7. I should possibly
read them before asking this - but the experience in the group is amazing.
Comments appreciated.

I've been using Legacy since version 3 or 4. My sourcing has been
inconsistent but I'm now hoping to be able to improve things. I think that
I'm noticing that some things input in the past show up differently in
version 7. I'm not positive though. I'm going through citations for census
records in England. I'm a 'lumper' and have one master citation for each
census for each county. In this case I'm working with English census but
the master citation was set up prior to version 7.

I put the Source detail for a family e.g RG13 Piece 1790, Folio 43, page 1,
Parish Benhall; Registration District Plomesgate, Sub registration
Aldeburgh, Household #5 and put other details under Text/Comments - example.
James Reeve age 78, parish relief
Sarah Reeve age 74, parish relief
Frank Lambard [sic Lambert] 24,grandson, bricklayer's labourer, born Benhall

If I tick the box - add this text to the source citation on reports under
the Text/Comments I can end up with the names shown twice (looking just at
the output preview). If I remove the tick, re-save the info and look at the
output preview again -- no names appear, however.

I'm getting confused about what boxes are best to tick. On the Detail
information tab I have the 3 options ticked - Add this detail to the source
citation; Verified; Include this citation on reports. On the Text/Comments
I have Verified ticked -- not sure why the option is there though. Maybe it
is useful to splitters? I also have Include this citation on Reports
ticked. I haven't added comments about the citation - so haven't asked the
system to include them.

If I click Add the text to the source citation on reports in the
Text/Comments tab - it appears in the Output preview once. Formatting looks
a bit strange but that is another issue I suspect. If I then Save - and go
back again to look at the Edit Detail screen I've got the names twice. If I
unclick Add the text to the source citation on reports in the Text/Comments
tab the output preview shows one set of names BUT - when I save that the
names are gone when I look at it again. Seems strange to me
Possibly the problem is just with the Output preview. A report that I did
recently didn't seem to result in the names shown twice in the Endnotes.

I do not know whether this is splitting or lumping, but I have one
source for each township or city in each census. So I have a lot of
different census entries for 1920 Philadelphia, but I can put the detail
(roll number, page no, etc) each time I quote a different page. This
still gives me a lot of census entries, but I can at least find them.

RE: [LegacyUG] Missing Multimedia Files report after backup

2008-07-07 Thread leo macdonald

Hi Art, I had a similar problem a while back, if you have changed the name of a
picture you will get this message, also if you change the location of the
photo. Everyone probably uses their own method of naming their pictures, mine
may not be the correct method but it works fine for me. Here is an example of
what I mean, I have a photo of Mary Jane Smith, I scan it into my program and
then I call it Mary Jane Smith, a second photo of the same person at a later
date I'll call it Mary Jane Smith (1) etc. Sometimes I have discover that I had
the name listed incorrectly and I rename the photo, so instead of it being Mary
Jane Smith, it is now called Jane Mary Smith. Now, when I do a backup at the
end of the day I will get the same message as you are getting. I can reopen my
Legacy program, locate the person that I have changed, look up the new named
photo and set the new path and everything works fine. Providing I have only
used this photo once or twice as in an event or the main photo for this person,
and I have located both photo's and corrected both paths.
Where I ran into a real problem, and it took me forever to figure it out, was
that I had used the same photo and attached it to a source detail, like the
photo you may get on a death notice. You attach the photo to the source, then
you attach the source to everything that is connected to the person in the
death notice, birth, death burial, parents, spouce, children etc. As an example
I just did this exact same thing a couple days ago, I got the same message as
you did and I ended up with I think it was 76 errors. I had only changed one
photo, it was attached to the source for a death notice.
Here is what I would suggest you should do, first back up your file and your
multimedia files first.
Do a file maintence check/repair.
Go to OptionscustomizeLocationstest all multimedia paths, if you get a list,
print it out.
If you can't locate the photos from this list you can try the following.
Go to OptionscustomizeLocationsView Current list of Multimedia
locationshighlight one of the location pathsOptionsDeleteview
listPrintclosecloseclose then check the photos in this list.
Remember the missing photo may not be the main photo for the person, you may
have it also attached in the + section at the end of the birth, baptismal,
death or funeral address sections, or have it attached to a marriage, an event,
or as I said before it may be attached to a main source or to the source
detail.
I hope I haven't confused you even more then you were before, I hope something
I have said will help.
Leo

Subject: [LegacyUG] Missing Multimedia Files report after backup
 Date: Mon, 7 Jul 2008 12:19:13 -0700

After doing a backup of Multimedia Files an error message reports that I
need to go to Options Customize Locations and Test All Multimedia
 Paths, Which I did.

I received a very long list of files missing from C:\Legacy\Pictures\.

I keep various graphics in their own folders, such as
 C:\Legacy\Pictures\Census\UK.

The interesting thing is that when I go to the individuals using the
graphics, they are still properly displayed, they are not lost, but the
error message is scary since the report lists about 500 *.jpg's.

Re: [LegacyUG] Renaming my Data folder

2008-07-07 Thread Bruce Jones
Sorry if I confused you. Yes, I have copied all the files from the Legacy
folder on the C drive to the USB drive. I have saved my database file,
pictures, video, etc. to the USB drive. I did this so I can attach the USB
drive to either my desktop or my laptop (Legacy installed on both) and have
my current data available immediately without needing to synchronize them.
I thought this is what many do for this purpose. It works fine for me.

Therefore, I think you gave me the answer I needed,
Thanks

Maybe I'm a teeny bit confused. If you have Legacy on your C-drive, that
includes the Data folder. That contains a variety of files that represent
your database. Did you move all that to your USB-drive into a folder called
Legacy6? Is it even possible to do that, I'm not sure. If so:

When you first open Legacy after renaming the folder, it won't know where
to find your data. So just browse to the right location. If you have moved
other 'data' such as your picture folder you will have to change the path to
 that under Customize/Locations.

Or do you mean you keep your .zip backup on your USB-drive?

Ron,

Thanks for the reply. At least I know that the program is generating
the pages correctly for you. Now to do some more investigating and try
to figure out where I may have messed up . . .

It would seem that another setting may be responsible if you are creating your

Subject: [LegacyUG] Descendant Web Page Creation

Re: [LegacyUG] 7.0.0.53 Reported Bug?

2008-07-07 Thread Bruce Jones
It depends on the setting for Sources
If I select the footnote option for sources, I get multiple occurrences
(looks like a bug)
If I select the endnote option for sources, I get just one occurrence (looks
good)
I think this is also what Dede found (in both cases).
Does that make sense?

Definitely looks like a bug to me.

Just install Legacy7 into a different directory (folder) to the one in

I am fairly certain that the default location is C:\Legacy so if that is
where you have Legacy 6, just be careful not to accept the default when
installing. I had Legacy 6 in C:\Program Files\Legacy so I was happy to
have 7 in C:\Legacy.

(I believe I have heard that using C:\Program Files if you have Vista can
cause problems but I can't swear to this.)

Bruce:

Yes it does make sense, but it's not what I see. Unfortunately I get
multiples when endnotes are selected. I hate to trouble you further, but
I'm using 7.0.0.53 and the SourceWriter template for Census records (US,
Federal, 1910 population schedule, Online images). Is that the same as
you're using? I suspect there are different bugs associated with different
templates because other sources don't repeat, only the 1910 US. Could you
let me know if we're on the same page? The Descendant Book Report is the
one I use most often, and it's completely useless in the format that I'm
getting now. Your comparison would be extremely helpful.

Re: [LegacyUG] Missing Multimedia Files report after backup

2008-07-07 Thread Art Seddon
Hi Leo,
I had changed nothing. I had just finished a Maintenance - Check/Repair and
received the message to do the check Multi-Media locations, which I did. I
printed out the list and then went to several of the files which have the
supposedly lost graphics and found all graphics that I checked still
properly linked to the individuals and displaying in their proper picture
gallery.

The only problem is the files it listed as not being in \Legacy\Pictures had
never been in that folder, but were in sub-folders such as
\Legacy\Pictures\Census\UK or \Legacy\Pictures\Census\US or
\Legacy\Pictures\Wedding\, etc.

No problem in V6 and the only problem (with graphics) with V7 is getting an
error message and error.log when the graphic linkage is working correctly.

Thanks for the advice.

Incidently, my naming convention would call for 1976_Mary_Jane_Smith.jpg

Hi Art, I had a similar problem a while back, if you have changed the name
of a picture you will get this message, also if you change the location of
the photo. Everyone probably uses their own method of naming their pictures,
mine may not be the correct method but it works fine for me. Here is an
example of what I mean, I have a photo of Mary Jane Smith, I scan it into my
program and then I call it Mary Jane Smith, a second photo of the same
person at a later date I'll call it Mary Jane Smith (1) etc. Sometimes I
have discover that I had the name listed incorrectly and I rename the photo,
so instead of it being Mary Jane Smith, it is now called Jane Mary Smith.
Now, when I do a backup at the end of the day I will get the same message as
you are getting. I can reopen my Legacy program, locate the person that I
have changed, look up the new named photo and set the new path and
everything works fine. Providing I have only used this photo once or twice
as in an event or the main photo for this person, and I have located both
photo's and corrected both paths.
Where I ran into a real problem, and it took me forever to figure it out,
was that I had used the same photo and attached it to a source detail, like
the photo you may get on a death notice. You attach the photo to the source,
then you attach the source to everything that is connected to the person in
the death notice, birth, death burial, parents, spouce, children etc. As an
example I just did this exact same thing a couple days ago, I got the same
message as you did and I ended up with I think it was 76 errors. I had only
changed one photo, it was attached to the source for a death notice.
Here is what I would suggest you should do, first back up your file and your
multimedia files first.
Do a file maintence check/repair.
Go to OptionscustomizeLocationstest all multimedia paths, if you get a
list, print it out.
If you can't locate the photos from this list you can try the following.
Go to OptionscustomizeLocationsView Current list of Multimedia
locationshighlight one of the location pathsOptionsDeleteview
listPrintclosecloseclose then check the photos in this list.
Remember the missing photo may not be the main photo for the person, you may
have it also attached in the + section at the end of the birth, baptismal,
death or funeral address sections, or have it attached to a marriage, an
event, or as I said before it may be attached to a main source or to the
source detail.
I hope I haven't confused you even more then you were before, I hope
something I have said will help.
Leo
