2008-08-07 Thread Melody B
That's a good idea - I hadn't thought of that. I haven't used the To
Do list much at this point (can we say newbie even after one year?)
I think I might combine this with Connie's suggestion about making a
NOT in census event.

Thanks muchly,
Melody

Melody, I don't think I'd make the negative event. Instead, it might be

in the research notes that she is not found in her father's household in
 that census year.

Jenny, the US pre-1850 census records list only head of household, then
there is a number in a column, by (usually) 5-year age group, for the others
in the household. It is, therefore, possible to know if a 23 year old
daughter (or son) was not included in the household.

Subject: [LegacyUG] A NOT Residence event?

In going thru some sources/citations, I realized that some census
information actually confirms that a certain person is NOT living at a
certain place. For instance, A had a daughter whose age makes it evident on
a particular census that she no longer lived at home (on pre-1850 census).

What sort of Event Type would you come up with for this? I would like to
keep track of this because it helps keep things straight in my head with all
these unnamed - only numbered - offspring.

Right now I have a NOT Residence event. I called it that because census
info so often turns into a Residence event. My sentence renders out similar
to She was not living with her parents in such-and-such-a-place in
such-and-such-a-year. I put a note in the citation for this event to make
it more clear that this does not mean that she did not live in
such-and-such-a-place at that time, only that she didn't live with her
parents. (though perhaps I should put that in the notes for the actual
 event)

 Hi Melody,

I DO use this as a method to keep track of people and where they are or not

residence, but both amounts to basically the same thing...

I have an event which is listed as 'NOT listed in census' which the event
definition is: [GivenName] was [EventName] of [Date] with the family
 [~inPlace]. [Notes]. [Sources]...

Which basically will read in reports as:
Mary Ann was NOT listed in census of 1860 with the family in Mt. Pulaski,
 Logan Co., IL.
She would have been age 7 in this census. I don't find her living with any
of her older grown siblings who have left the household, nor with other
known relative or family friends. Per her mother Elizabeth's obituary one of
the younger female children of Paul and Elizabeth (Mary Ann's parents) died
in a buggy accident in 1858. It is possible it might have been Mary Ann.
Further research is required to confirm.

I find this 'event' to be a handy research tool...

Re: [LegacyUG] Slave Owner event?

2008-08-07 Thread Melody B
Right now it's just that he is listed as the head of household on a
Census (pre-1850) and there are slaves listed as being in that
household. I put the number of slaves in the Description field. I
end up with something like He owned 7 slaves in 1840 in , Overton,
Tennessee, USA. If there is no description, then the sentence still
works because it is He owned slaves

The main thing I'm trying to do is keep the association with slaves
visible. I'm not sure what to do with that info later. I find it
interesting that some ancestor lines (down the entire line) never
owned slaves while others seem to have on a continuing basis,
especially when the two family lines co-exist in the same basic
location over a large amount of time.

Take care,
Melody

[LegacyUG] Alternate Names Ancestry.com and US Census

2008-08-07 Thread John Magyari

While searching for my Grandfather 1920 Census via ancestry.com
ancestry had my grandfather's surname indexed Mazzari, with a Yellow
triangle next to it indicating other possible names Maggard

When I look at the original it is correctly spelled
Magyari

Since the original image has it spelled correctly, but a search via
ancestry, com has it indexed via Mazzari and Maggard (index does NOT have
Magyari) which are incorrect transcriptions, but in ancestry's index.

1) How would you place this info in Legacy, so others could potential
find in future?

a) AKAs Mazzari and Maggard ??
b) just in notes?

2) I run into a similar issue with the 1910 Census
here the index has it written incorrectly
Magdyar
I would assume here I really would use a AKA, correct???

you'll see the box to submit your informed transcription of the name. It's

In this situation (which I run across pretty often) I don't use AKA because
the person didn't really go by that name (the actual record shows the
correct spelling), it was just indexed wrong by Ancestry.com. I submit a
correction to Ancestry so it can be found under the correct spelling in the
future and document my source in Legacy using the name on the actual record.

RE: [LegacyUG] Alternate Names Ancestry.com and US Census

2008-08-07 Thread Angela Gabbard
Hi John,

I use the census as an event (not just as a source as others do). In the
events notes I add a sentence that reads His name is incorrectly indexed
by Ancestry.com as Mazzari

I do not use the AKA because this is not a name that your grandfather ever
used and the it was an error by the individual indexing the census.

Also I have found that indices for the same census image complied by
Ancestry, Heritage Quest, etc may show different names for the same
individual.

Finally, as someone else stated - in Ancestry when you are on the
individual's preview page (not sure exactly what it is called) on the left
it has a place to click for name corrections. The yellow triangle notes
that there are other optional names for this individual. These names are
then also listed in index thus if you make the correction anyone else
following you will be able to access your grandfather's image with the
correct name.

[LegacyUG] Family Tree Charts in the Royal Fashion?

2008-08-07 Thread JMM Jr
Hello, Has anyone ever tried to create a family tree chart in Legacy
somewhat similar to the way I've seen British royal family trees presented?
That is, a chart that shows the subject and all of his/her spouses (spice?)
on one row, then all of the this person's children and spouses on the next
row, then on the next and all following rows, the chart shows the same, but
only for the PREFERRED line. For example, you can see one for Princess
Diana at http://www.althorp.com/images/familytree.pdf. I'm not really
concerned about the format of the chart, just the content (people). Any
ideas would be greatly appreciated.

The first thing I would do is submit a correction on the image page at Ancestry
so that Magyari also show as an alternate name in the Ancestry Index. I've
submitted several and they seem to get them entered pretty quickly.

Magdyar
I would assume here I really would use a AKA, correct???

thanks,

As others have said, you can submit a correction to Ancestry. I have done so
many times. The indexers did the best they could. Some were better at the
job than others. As to you your question, if your source citations gives the
correct location of the census page, how Ancestry has it indexed doesn't
really matter. The index is NOT the source, and there is no reason to
reference the error. A future researcher who doesn't use your page
reference, but insists on using an unneeded index, isn't taking advantage of
your research anyway.

Re: [LegacyUG] (LegacyUG) Event: Transfer of Deed

*Thanks Ron and Elsie.

My problem is that the format doesn't handle more than one person such as;
Betsey B. and
WIllard Meacham transferred property to Philo Sage. However, there aren't
so many transfers
that I can't write the details for each in the description field and leave
the auto-format fields blank.
Now I'll see if that causes any reporting hick-ups.

BTW, I liked your approach to Census Events a few months ago so much that

[LegacyUG] Searching for FHL film numbers in to-do list

2008-08-07 Thread Jennifer Trahan
Does anyone know if there is a way to search for FHL film numbers in the
description section of an individual To-Do task? I would like to create a list
of all the individual to-do items for each microfilm number. That way, I can
tag all the indiviudal to-do tasks and create a to-do report with just those
tasks when I go to view the film at my local FHC. So far, I have not figured
out a way to search the to-do list. Currently, I keep track of every individual
to-do task with an FHL film number in Excel as well as in my Legacy database.
In Excel, I can filter by film number and tag those to-do items in Legacy to
print my to-do report. However, I would really like to not have to use Excel to
do this because it requires double entry of to-do tasks. Maybe there is no way
to do what I'm wanting to do, but I just wanted to double check with other
users.

It does seem odd that all the To-Do fields got left out of the Search

won't help you. There are a few Filter options in the To-Do list itself

2008-08-07 Thread Bruce Jones
If you are willing to modify your ToDo items, you could put the FHL film
number in any one of three places and then select just that film number.
These places are the Category, Locality, Repository.
Using any one of these you can get a (customized) ToDo report for either
just the selected (Category, Locality, Repository) or for all TjoDos sorted
by (Category, Locality, Repository).
The advantage of Repository is that you can get ToDos for more than one
Repository without getting all ToDos by tagging the desired Repositories
whereas with Category Locality it is just one or all.
It doesn't get you what you want without some work, but could be useful for
all new ToDo items.

Re: [LegacyUG] Searching for FHL film numbers in to-do list

2008-08-07 Thread Jennifer Trahan
Bruce,

Thanks for the advice. That could probably work for repository b/c if I see a
number in that field, then I'll know the true repository is FHL. I may try that
with new ones. I think I heard awhile back of someone putting a general to-do
item with the film number as repository and listing all the people in the
description tab. Of course, I kind of like the to-do sheet Legacy prints for
each individual b/c it has enough room to take notes. I don't think one to-do
sheet with 50 people on it would have enough room to take notes. So I think I
will go with your way. Thanks again!

I just use all certificates as sources and attach them as pictures. In the UK

I use scanned copies of death certificates as Source Detail pictures.
The source is Death Certificate or some particular location's death
certificates. I don't think I would use them as 'death pictures'
because that use of Death is an Event, so unless I had a picture of the
person's death (a gruesome thought) I don't actually have a picture of
the Event.

[LegacyUG] Death Certificates

2008-08-07 Thread Ronald E Howell
I obviously did not explain myself fully. Using Master Sources and the
SourceWriter, I have created the 'template'. In the following order: Death
Records, Death Certificates, All Countries except.., Created at local/county
level, Original microfilm/microfiche. Then I go to step 02 to enter other
information.
I was using the scanned copy of the death certificates, as I said, as a
death picture (realizing all along that this was not effective). Since
upgrading to V7, I would like to be able to use the above outlined feature.
Now my questions are: Where do I use this Master Source? Should I create
an event for 'Death Certificates'? Or just forget about using them except as
a 'Death Picture' (gruesome sounding or not).
Also, how do you create Source Detail without a Master Source?
I hope all this makes sense.

Re: [LegacyUG] Death Certificates

2008-08-07 Thread JLB
You apply the Master Source for whatever pieces of information you're
using it for (birth, death, parent's name, cause of death, burial
location - they're usually quite the treasure-trove.) It sounds like
you've gone at it backwards. Usually you enter the information, then
click on the Sources icon and either Cite a Master Source or Add a new one.

Since you've already created the Master Source, go back to the person
and enter some of the information from the death certificate, then Cite
the Master Source for the information you enter. It's all pretty clear
with big buttons. Link the picture of it into Source Detail as further
proof.

It sounds like you're trying to make the Death Certificate itself into
an Event. I think what we're telling you is don't. Use it as a Source
of information.

I have more than one family file, and I've always backed up each one

One thing Legacy could add to make backups better is the option to
automatically add the current date to the backup file name. Adding it manually
is error prone and tedious.

Hi all,

I have Legacy 7, and backing up seems to take more steps now. First, I have to
tell it what to name the file, and then I have to back it up.

I like to use keyboard shortcuts whenever I can (instead of the mouse). Here is
what I seem to need to do:

Alt + F, B. This gets me to the backup screen.

Then, it takes eleven tabs to access the button for a backup. (I use a
different name each time so that I can preserve each backup.) There has got to
be a better way!

In addition, when I try to begin typing in my backup, the first fifteen
matches that try to autocomplete aren't even .zip files!

Any tips?

Thanks,

Re: [LegacyUG] Incorrect Auto Geo Coding

2008-08-07 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
What I noticed, is, that some, if not all US counties,
uses the L/L for the capital of the county. I had in
the past, used the capital's L/L for this purpose and
hard coded them.
Remember, not all county capitals (AKA county seats),
are exactly in its center.

Sheri,

My apologies for the delay in coming back to you. I have at long last got my
computers talking to each other again - but what a job! At least my main one is
now running about three times the speed it was, and no it wasn't a virus,
just 5 years of accumulated dead ends and other rubbish! At last I have time to
think.

Initially, I have been playing around with the Address Report, however I cannot
get this to work as I think it should. In particular I cannot get it to show a
picture, nor does it have the facility to customise the fields. I cannot see the
point of having a picture in the Address Screen if it cannot be printed either.
This may be me so I will have another look at it later.

However, Salvation is in the Name Tags and success or otherwise depends on the
detail in the location field for burial. This does have a customisable (Ugh!)
What to print tab and one can choose the burial fields and Lat/Long.
Furthermore, if you temporarily put the cemetry/gravestone pic. in the
individual's gallery (and starred) it will print.

Please try this and come back to me.

I had also been adding copies of the death certificates, pictures, etc.,
to
the buried + fields but have found they don't print or
show up on the web
page creation Legacy does, again I could be doing something wrong.

In a nutshell, none of the vital record pictures will print/display on website.
As you know they can be included in an event and included that way. Personally
for websites, I code them myself and put them where I wish. Similarly this can
be done in Word or OpenOffice Writer for print.

(BTW please do not trim this post other than the Legacy bits at the end as I
have to keep referring back, I think the memory must be going :-) )

 Ron,

New subject heading. The other, well... Anyway, I'm working on a
different
computer right now (my main system is a little under the weather so to
speak) and I don't have all my Legacy files switched over yet, but in
the
Burial field on the individual's information screen, I do have
information
there. I have the date of death in the death date field and the death
location is listed as City, County, State, Country. In the buried section,
I
have the date of burial, if known or at least an approximation of the
burial
date, and in the location field, have City, County, State, Country.
I'm
still experimenting on whether or not to put an address, plot, GPS, or
whatever in addition to the City, County, State, Country in these location
fields. I am thinking about doing that in my event location fields too.

Back to the individual's information screen. In the buried section, if
you
click on the + icon, I do have the cemetery's address
linked as a burial
address, which has basic contact information, GPS coordinates of the
cemetery itself, information on the cemetery, etc., the general
stuff that
would apply to all located in the cemetery. From what I've been
reading in
some of the posts, this may not be how to use that entry. But this basic
information has shown up on some of reports I've played around with
and I
have been able to run a report from that Event Address to list all the
 people associated with that entry.

I had also been adding copies of the death certificates, pictures, etc.,
to
the buried + fields but have found they don't print or
show up on the web
page creation Legacy does, again I could be doing something wrong.

So, I'm using the cemetery event to record pretty much the same
information
that's in the buried fields, and putting as much individual grave site
information as I can in the notes field along with pics of the graves,
etc.

Sometimes the simplest things can be the most complicated! Again, thanks
for
the help and let me know if there's anything else you need.

 Thanks!
 Sheri

[LegacyUG] Re: How to have more than one family file

2008-08-07 Thread Dee
There have been many posts on the pros and cons of more than one family
file. I have used separate files, and sometimes I wish they were all
together, but I haven't decided to merge them yet. At any rate, all you need
to do is click on FileNew Family File. Give it a name, different from your
other file, and away you go! Just remember that you have to back up each
one individually.

Re: [LegacyUG] Searching for FHL film numbers in to-do list

2008-08-07 Thread Dee
I put the film number in the description. It shows on the Legacy home page
in my To Do's with a due date, and lets me see groupings. However, I really
like the idea of the repository as well!

   Bruce,

Thanks for the advice. That could probably work for repository b/c if I see
a number in that field, then I'll know the true repository is FHL. I may try
that with new ones. I think I heard awhile back of someone putting a general
to-do item with the film number as repository and listing all the people in
the description tab. Of course, I kind of like the to-do sheet Legacy prints
for each individual b/c it has enough room to take notes. I don't think one
to-do sheet with 50 people on it would have enough room to take notes. So I
think I will go with your way. Thanks again!

Does anyone know if there is a way to search for FHL film numbers in
the description section of an individual To-Do task? I would like to create
a list of all the individual to-do items for each microfilm number. That
way, I can tag all the indiviudal to-do tasks and create a to-do report with
just those tasks when I go to view the film at my local FHC. So far, I have
not figured out a way to search the to-do list. Currently, I keep track
of every individual to-do task with an FHL film number in Excel as well as
in my Legacy database. In Excel, I can filter by film number and tag those
to-do items in Legacy to print my to-do report. However, I would really like
to not have to use Excel to do this because it requires double entry of
to-do tasks. Maybe there is no way to do what I'm wanting to do, but I just
wanted to double check with other users.

[LegacyUG] printing problem

2008-08-07 Thread craig

Hi

I am new to the user group and by asking this question there is probably a
really simple answer.

I have tried virtually every permutation of print layout I can find on
Legacy but I haven't found a printout that gives an old fashioned ancestry
chart. You know the type of thing.. names with birth and death dates from
the oldest ancestor at the top and spreading vertically downward to the
youngest.

My father is 78 and is really interested in the genealogy of the family but
it needs to be in a simple chart so he can just view it as is! Can anyone
help me as to how I can get this on the Legacy system.

Thanks

Craig Humphreys (UK)
