Thank you Mary for you very precise and informative reply.

The reason I said backup/copy was because I did not know which was the best
way to go for what I was doing - getting ready to install V 7 so thank you
for steering me in the right direction of backups rather than copies.

I will now spend the time doing backups to the CD of all the files giving
them their own names.

Many thanks again.

Valerie
You should be aware that LEGACY BACKUP isn't the same as COPY.
Legacy Backup "Zips Up" your Family File and all its associated small
files, into one file which can be saved to a CD or DVD. If you want
the file back, you do Legacy Restore.
So if you have 34 Family Trees, you'd have to do Legacy Backup 34
times, making sure you use different names for each backup. It is
tedious to do, but the benefit is ease of restoring.

If you are using Win XP you could use the built-in Backup Wizard. Or you
could use a program like Winzip to put all your files into one zip file.

Or you could just copy the files to CD, although you might need several
CDs unless they're small files. You can get a lot more on a DVD.

Re: [LegacyUG] DNA results - Ver 6 Deluxe

Jane,

I establish a source called "DNA Ancestry Participant" or "DNA
Relative
Genetics Participant", etc.  Then I apply that source to each
person in my
database that has been tested by the various companies.  Now I
can "show
list" for those sources to extract a list of all DNA
participants.  By
tagging descendants of a particular line, I can then show
all DNA tested
members of that family.

Hope this will give you some
ideas.

[LegacyUG] Events differ between "Add events" and "assign sources"

2008-08-12 Thread Gavin Nicholson
Hi listers,

I have just started using this program and I am updating my sources. I
noticed when I was in the "assigned Sources" screen that there was an event
for "Death Cause" and I thought I would add that in. So I assigned a source
to it and went back to the "Individual Information" screen and it wasn't in
the Events/Facts list so I selected "add" but when I dropped down the list
of events "death cause" wasn't there. I added a new one but when I went back
to the "assign sources" screen I now had two "Death cause" entries. Upon
closer inspection the lists of events between the two screens are
significantly different.

So can someone tell me how/why they are different. How are you supposed to
use each screen if they don't directly relate?

Cheers,

Gavin.

RE: [LegacyUG] Preferred spouse

Good suggestions.. Warnings -- was getting tired and could have missed
them but I'll check the setting. He was definitely deleted. His RIN was
unused and the name was no longer in the index.

Note to those using RINs -- if you do delete someone accidentally and add
them again the RIN will change. He went from 306 to 4030. I wanted him
back with his family and used Tools / Renumber RINs and got him back where
he was. I liked that...

Re preferred:
I'd tried selecting either/both -- one at a time and clicking 'set to
preferred' -- no change
I'd backed the file up and did a Check/Repair - no change.

I made a copy of the database and tried to replicate the problem. The
asterisk disappeared on one when clicked and I could then 'prefer' the right
one. I went back to the original file and it works now too. I don't know
what the problem was but it wasn't working before doing the same thing.
Problem solved for now.

Thanks folks

Kathy: Make sure you do a database maintenance check at least twice
in a row...then do a power off reboot. It sounds like you may have a
"ghost marriage" or two lurking in the background. Also running
"treefinder" might turn up some stray twigs who are hoping to be come

the marriage icon. Please note that even though there may be only one
"official" marriage, Legacy considers any partnership that result in
a birth as being a marital union and will therefore record it as a
marriage...In the instance you are describing, she should have 2
marriages...check both her and both of her partners to see if there
are duplicates...and keep us posted...

Could you have accidentally turned off the warnings? Are you sure you
actually deleted him as opposed to just unlinking him?

To correct the problem with 2 preferred spouses, try selecting one of
them and click "Set to Preferred". If that doesn't work, try a
Check/Repair. But it does sound like a bug that you should try and
duplicate (on a copy of your database) and report to

[LegacyUG] Preferred spouse

2008-08-12 Thread Kathy Wallace
Yes - I was aware of the preferred relationships. Something else strange is
now happened with my file. I re-added my cousin's husband that I somehow
managed to delete. I'm not sure how that happened really as there are
usually enough warnings that there are connections to children and spouses
and I didn't see them. Now - I've got 2 asterisks * rather than one. Both
my cousin's hubby and her son's father are 'preferred' and I can't see a way
to cancel the designation for one of them. It doesn't really make sense
that the system would allow 2 to be preferred.

Kathy, has anyone mentioned that if you have more than one spouse, the
spouses will appear in the order that you put them into your file,
regardless of chronological order? The spouses will display
differently though, if you set a preferred relationship - usually
defaults to the first relationship.

Re: [LegacyUG] Finding differences in databases

2008-08-12 Thread Leon Chapman
Pati:

You are basically going to have to chose one or the other or live with
conversion losses between the two programs;
but, given you are a Mac user running Windows using Parallels, you are
used to doing things the hard way.

I use Legacy for all my inputs and formal database updating.
In the past, I used a GEDCOM transfer to FTM just to do Charting that
was not available in Legacy; but, I did not do any database updating
in FTM.
The GEDCOM conversion losses were normally ok, since I was just doing
Charting with basic BDM information.

In Version 7 of Legacy, we now have wonderful Charting capabilities
and file attaching capabilities, so my need for FTM has gone away.
By the way, if you do pictures in FTM, it stores those pictures in
their database and it is difficult to get them out if you want to use
them elsewhere.
Legacy just links to your pictures, files, videos, etc, so the
pictures are always retained outside of the Legacy database and you
have access to them using your Windows explorer.

Anyway, good luck with your trials and tribulations of Mac, Windows,
Parallels, FTM, Legacy, etc.
Just a final note -- Unix, GenBox, & Rootsmagic may be in your near future.

I keep my database (and multimedia) on a USB drive so when taking my laptop
on a trip I also take the USB drive. So I never need to worry about keeping
two databases synced as there is only the one database on the USB drive.

Pam,

Assuming that the DB on your PC has not changed and that you are not really
interested in actually indentifying the changes but simply in updating your PC
then make sure the back-up on the lap-top is uptodate and email it to your PC.

Save the attachment to Legacy/Data on you PC and use File>Restore to create the
.fdb file and you will be given the choice of overwriting the old file or
changing the name. You can also use a USB stick to transfer it to your PC.

Is there an easy way of finding the differences between two databases? We live
part of the time away from home and I then use a laptop to study my family
history.

The original database was the same as on my PC. I need a way to record which
files have been altered on the laptop and copy that altered information to my
PC without going through each record individually. i.e . identify changes or
differences in the databases since a certain date.

When I travel, I use the backup and restore function in Legacy.

When you leave home, backup your database. Copy it onto your laptop and use
the restore function in your Legacy program on your laptop.

When you get back home, backup your database on your laptop, then copy it to
your desktop and use the restore function in your desktop Legacy to restore
the database on your desktop.

I add the date to the end of the filename to identify the most recent
database when I'm moving them back and forth.

Thanks Rich,

I totally did not explain that well. I am referring to PDF files. The
website says you can attach "any other kind of document" yet there is no
"document" option only picture, sound and video. Rootsmagic, which I have
also been evaluating, has a "file" option which is much better and would
be
perfect if a little thumbnail preview appeared as well rather than a
generic

icon.

You said, 'Are they talking about the clunky way of
inserting documents as a movie or sound file?' Not
sure what you mean by that.
Step one move the 'thing' to the hard drive legacy
looks for stuff in.
Step two go to the person it is for.
Click on the little porttrait between notes and
sources.
Click on the category you want.
search through your 'directory tree' to find where it
is staying.
Click on it.
You have now loaded it in, and if you want a different
'look', crop and the other tools are available as many
times as you want.
I happen to like this setup better than my old way,
when having to save small and big with different names
each. but that is me.

Re: [LegacyUG] Sentence Override

2008-08-12 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

What I now do is modify the notes text to include all I want to appear and
then in the "sentence override", I most frequently have: [Notes][Sources]

For my purposes it would therefore be nice to have an option or macro to
insert these two in one step rather than type them or insert them
individually. Now I am just copy/pasting them but I'm still working on
alternatives. Maybe an external tool.

I also worry about whether the "left out" default sentence will appear
anyway in some reports instead of the alternate "sentence override" which
would mess up those reports.

Love to hear how the Legacy experts do it.

Not sure whether I qualify as a "Legacy expert" but on the whole I find it
quicker just to type the Sentence as I want it rather than to select the
fields from the list. Obviously, I need to check the list sometimes to
find the precise words I need, but for the all the fields I use most
often, such as Description or Notes, I know to type [Desc] or [Notes].

The one I have most trouble with is Sources as I can never remember if it
should be [Source] or [Sources]!

Re: [LegacyUG] Sentence Override

2008-08-12 Thread Tracy Skegg
I liked learning from Help how to use some of the formatting like
[-Desc] when the first letter of the description appears in lowercase.
I prefer sentence style events, so it works well with my occupation
event eg I can put Farmer in Description but the sentence reads - He
worked as a farmer.

I use an event that includes the various elements available in a
nominal roll at the Aus Dept. of Veteran's Affairs on military
service, and I use an override when I get a Navy person

usual - [HeShe] served in the [Desc]; [HeShe] enlisted [inPlace];
[HeShe] served [onDate]. [Notes][Sources]
Navy - [HeShe] served in the [Desc]; homeport/port division was
[Place]; [HeShe] served [onDate].[Notes][Sources]

Re: [LegacyUG] Adoption challenges

2008-08-12 Thread Tracy Skegg
Kathy, has anyone mentioned that if you have more than one spouse, the
spouses will appear in the order that you put them into your file,
regardless of chronological order? The spouses will display
differently though, if you set a preferred relationship - usually
defaults to the first relationship.

eg sounds like you have = Wife + Husband 2* then Husband 1
(* is the preferred relationship that displays in Family View)
Displays/Prints as Husband 2* and children, then Husband 1 and children

I'm my husband's second wife, so in my file his 1st wife is listed
before me, but my name and marriage is the one I prefer to see in
Family View. In any reports I print with my husband's line, I'm
listed in chronological order - 2nd.

Cheers
Tracy

Jeff's questions about event text truncation makes me wonder how/when
people are using the Sentence Override feature.

One specific example from my file is for the Event "Military." My usual
sentence for this is "On [Date] [HeShe] was promoted [Desc].[Sources]
[Notes]" but on one occasion I used the Override to make it read "On
[Date] [HeShe] was seconded for [Desc].[Sources]."

There are quite a few occasions when I need to modify a Sentence like
that to cater for a specific circumstance that does not justify a new
Event Definition. I think where I use the Override most often, though,
is to amend a Sentence that ends "...[CR][Notes][Sources]" to read
"...[Sources]" because I don't have any Notes included and don't want
the Source reference number to appear on a new line."

It was actually several sentences that are part of the event's"notes".

Ah ... light dawns! I'm glad you got it sorted.

Thanks Rich,

I have also found out from Millenia that the "FILE" option is Deluxe version
only so that explains it.

Thanks for everyone's help,

Re: [LegacyUG] 34 files to be copied/backup

2008-08-12 Thread Mary Young

You should be aware that LEGACY BACKUP isn't the same as COPY.
Legacy Backup "Zips Up" your Family File and all its associated small
files, into one file which can be saved to a CD or DVD. If you want
the file back, you do Legacy Restore.
So if you have 34 Family Trees, you'd have to do Legacy Backup 34
times, making sure you use different names for each backup. It is
tedious to do, but the benefit is ease of restoring.
