[LegacyUG] appending?

2008-09-05 Thread Michele Lewis

My questions was not answered. Can we or can we not append sources?

When I am working on a specific person and I go into his/her source list and
I highlight a source I want to copy, I could swear that version 6 would ask
you do you want to overwrite or append. Now when I do that I only get the
option to overwrite (version 7).

Someone did answer my question but they misunderstood what I was asking.

Re: [LegacyUG] appending?

2008-09-05 Thread Michele Lewis
That is what I am doing now but I didn't have to do it in version 6. Now I
highlight a source and copy it. I open up the other person and copy it that
person. Then I have to go back to the other person and highlight another
source and then go to the 2nd person and copy it.

To clarify... this is if I have TWO sources for one event! I want to copy
BOTH sources at the same time so that I can paste both sources to another
person at one time.

They actually did answer your question. In V6 the source clipboard had 5
tabs for 5 citations. Because of this, when you copied to the source
clipboard you had to tell Legacy whether or not you wanted to overwrite
all tabs with the copied citation, or append it (add the citation to an
empty tab). Apparently the developers concluded that having 5 tabs in
the clipboard was too confusing for us users and decided to scale it
back to a single tab (or so I have been told since I do not use V7).
Since there is only a single tab, the choice to overwrite/append is
meaningless.

[[This is one of the reasons I did not upgrade since I use the extra
tabs all the time when rearranging citations and I considered this a
step backwards. I think the users would have been better served if the
developers would have just made the extra tabs optional ... maybe even
turned them off by default to avoid newbie confusion ... letting users
who know how to use them turn them back on.]]

Re: [LegacyUG] appending?

Append means add to.

For example... I highlight a source I want to copy so that I can use if for
the next person. Then I highlight another source and I want to ADD it to
what I am going to copy. Then when I go to the person I am going to copy
to, BOTH sources will be copied to the person.

[LegacyUG] V7 Census templates--where to find NARA roll numbers and other questions

2008-09-05 Thread Melanie Tucker
I finally decided to try the SourceWriter for U.S. census images. I located
an image of the 1850 census on the new FamilySearch record search pilot
site. However, I am at a loss to know how to find the NARA roll number. I
check the FHL catalog using the film number given, but it is not listed.

All the different sites use a different numbering system for the census. Is
it best just to look for the stamped numbers and type, for example 104(a)
and then something like 725 (handwritten).

Also, a few suggestions for the Legacy folks, I noticed that it's impossible
to see the entire light gray examples in the fields in the sourcewriter
because the minute you click in the box to try to scroll over, it
disappears. Also, since there are becoming increasingly more website that
offer images of the census, it seems to me that it would be a better idea to
enter the website on the details page instead of the source page so that you
don't have to have 3 or 4 separate souces for the same county.

TIA for your suggestions,

Thanks,
Melanie Tucker

Re: [LegacyUG] appending?

2008-09-05 Thread Michele Lewis
No, not the tab things. I am having a hard time explaining this. Ok

Let's say I pull up a person and I am looking at their list of sources. I can
highlight a source and hit that copy button on the left hand side at the bottom
and a box will come up that says, Copy the highlighted source citation to the
source clipboard? (This will also copy the source detail entry).

I click yes and then I can paste it to other people.

HOWEVER, in version 6 when you clicked on that copy button it would pop up a
box asking you if you ewant to OVERWRITE OR APPEND. If you hit append then it
would ADD this source to whatever you already had on the source clipboard.
Then when you went to the person you want to paste to then BOTH sources would
paste at the same time.

Re: [LegacyUG] appending?

2008-09-05 Thread Dermot McGlone
Michele,

I think I understand what you are talking about, but I still think it
does refer to the tabs on the old V6 source clipboard. In V6, if you
selected to copy a source to the clipboard, you were asked if you
wanted append (i.e., add that source to the sources already on the
clipboard) or if you wanted to overwrite (i.e., remove those sources
already on the clipboard from that clipboard and just have the copied
one on the clipboard).

Then when you went to paste from the source clipboard onto person 2,
you pasted whatever was on the clipboard, i.e., if you selected append
at the copy stage, you then added the 2 (or 3 or 4 or 5) sources to
person 2, but if you had selected overwrite at the copy stage, there
was only one source on the clipboard, as you had overwritten the
previous ones, so only one source was added to person 2.

Is this what you mean? If so, then it is because the source clipboard
has changed from v6 to v7.

There is an option on the source clipboard to load and save up to 10
clipboards, each named with whatever you wish. This would enable you
to copy the first source to the clipboard, save it, then go back, copy
the second source to the clipboard, and save that in position 2.
Continue to do this until you have all sources you wish to assign to
person 2 saved. Then load each one to the clipboard individually and
assign to person 2, as you wish.

It probably involves a few extra keystrokes, but not actually that
many, and saves you from accidentally assigning more than one source
to a person in error, because you've forgotten about tab 2, tab 3, etc
on V6.

If I have misunderstood your problem, I apologise for my stupidity,
and please ignore this post.

Regards,

Dermot.

Re: [LegacyUG] appending?

2008-09-05 Thread Jessica Morgan
I believe (and could be wrong) that she is referring to the Source
Clipboard, and in V6 you could have, I believe, up to five sources, depicted
by five different tabs.

The source clipboard in V7 appears to be a singular source at a time, with
no multiple clipboard option.

I've wondered this same thing lately. I never quite got the hang of the
source clipboard in V6, but V7 is pretty simple and easy.

Re: [LegacyUG] appending?

2008-09-05 Thread Judy

Michele~

We can no longer "append" sources in Version 7. Version 6 had the fantastic
capability of allowing us to have multiple sources available on a "tabbed"
clipboard and "append" or overwrite on the tabs. Version 7 does not offer
us that option.

Still a great program.

Judy

My questions was not answered. Can we or can we not append sources?

When I am working on a specific person and I go into his/her source list
and I highlight a source I want to copy, I could swear that version 6
would ask you do you want to overwrite or append. Now when I do that I
only get the option to overwrite (version 7).

>Someone did answer my question but they misunderstood what I was asking.

Michele,

I am well aware of the meaning of "append" but was uncertain as to what you
meant, as it is not a word I would use in your context. In a previous email you
amplified this and whilst it was previously possible to add sources using up to
5 tabs that is no longer the case.

I wish I could include a graphic. If, she is referring to the five
sources available shown by five different tabs, we seem to have more
now, albeit pretty well hidden. Michele, please try this and see if
it answers your query:

1. Open Legacy
2. Select someone, to go to that person's Individual Information window.
3. Click the books icon, the icon for sources. (Ta da, it opens the
Source Clipboard!)
4. Please look at the bottom right area of this window where it says
Save A Clipboard. You can save TEN Clipboards! That is double the
five we had in Legacy 6. Is this what you are asking about?

Regards,

Dermot.

2008/9/5 Michele Lewis <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

No, not the tab things. I am having a hard time explaining this. Ok

Let's say I pull up a person and I am looking at their list of sources.
I
can highlight a source and hit that copy button on the left hand side at
the

bottom and a box will come up that says, Copy the highlighted source
citation to the source clipboard? (This will also copy the source detail
entry).

I click yes and then I can paste it to other people.

HOWEVER, in version 6 when you clicked on that copy button it would pop
up a
box asking you if you ewant to OVERWRITE OR APPEND. If you hit append
then

it would ADD this source to whatever you already had on the source
clipboard. Then when you went to the person you want to paste to then
BOTH

sources would paste at the same time.

 From the help file:

   -
"Quick Copy Existing Citations to the Source Clipboard

"You can copy one or more (up to five) source citations you have showing for
the current individual
onto the Source Clipboard by clicking in the lower-left corner of the
screen. When you do, Legacy
asks you if you want to either Copy/Overwrite Existing entries or Append to
Existing.
Copy/Overwrite Existing clears any sources that are on the Source Clipboard
and then copies the
highlighted source to the Source 1 tab of the Clipboard. Choosing Append to
Existing places the
current source on the next available tab of the Source Clipboard. (When all
five tabs of the
Clipboard are filled, the Append to Existing option is not offered.)"
 ---

Since there are not five tabs any longer in V7, the Append does not exist
any longer. This is a
shame because it was very handy to enter up to five sources for a husband
then "copy/append" them to
the source clipboard then assign them to the wife in one, time saving,
operation. The help file
still indicates you can do this but you can't.

Hopefully, Millenia will restore the five tabs but if not, correct the help
file notation.
Unfortunately, as often happens to any software developer, they removed a
function they thought
useless and broke a very useful tool.

Re: [LegacyUG] appending?

2008-09-05 Thread Elizabeth Richardson
Robert (and others) - opening the source window, the one from the books
icon, is NOT the source clipboard. It is the Assigned Sources list. The
source clipboard that you reference is, in fact, THE source clipboard. Yes,
it has 10 places and is the same as in V6. This is a wonderful feature.
Michele, I do not believe you can copy 2 sources at the same time. However,
when you copy an event to the Event Clipboard, it will copy not only the
event but the source attached to it. Then when you paste this event you can
easily attach another source via the source clipboard. If you're only
wanting to use 2 previously used sources, you can copy them both to the
source clipboard. It takes only a couple of clicks to access each of them
and it is quite simple to insert different source details if necessary.

Re: [LegacyUG] appending?

Let's say I pull up a person and I am looking at their list of sources.
I can highlight a source and hit that copy button on the left hand side
at the bottom and a box will come up that says, Copy the highlighted
source citation to the source clipboard? (This will also copy the source
detail entry).

I click yes and then I can paste it to other people.

HOWEVER, in version 6 when you clicked on that copy button it would pop
up a box asking you if you ewant to OVERWRITE OR APPEND. If you hit
append then it would ADD this source to whatever you already had on the
source clipboard. Then when you went to the person you want to paste to
then BOTH sources would paste at the same time.

michele

From the help file:

  -
"Quick Copy Existing Citations to the Source Clipboard

"You can copy one or more (up to five) source citations you have showing for the current individual
onto the Source Clipboard by clicking in the lower-left corner of the screen. When you do, Legacy
asks you if you want to either Copy/Overwrite Existing entries or Append to Existing.
Copy/Overwrite Existing clears any sources that are on the Source Clipboard and then copies the
highlighted source to the Source 1 tab of the Clipboard. Choosing Append to Existing places the
current source on the next available tab of the Source Clipboard. (When all five tabs of the
Clipboard are filled, the Append to Existing option is not offered.)"

---

Since there are not five tabs any longer in V7, the Append does not exist any longer. This is a
shame because it was very handy to enter up to five sources for a husband then "copy/append" them to
the source clipboard then assign them to the wife in one, time saving, operation. The help file
still indicates you can do this but you can't.

Hopefully, Millenia will restore the five tabs but if not, correct the help file notation.
Unfortunately, as often happens to any software developer, they removed a function they thought
useless and broke a very useful tool.

[LegacyUG] re: appending ?

2008-09-05 Thread J B Coats
Below is my exchange concerning the use of the source clipboardv7 vs.
v6.

Another point concerning the 'extra key strokes' of adding one source at a
time from the possible 10 that can be added is 3 per source. If you had 4
sources you would have 12 strokes for each individual that needed these
same sources.

Whereas from the v6 you would load up to 5 and add them all at once.

I believe that using the option 'ALT 3 routine would cause more problems.
Currently it would add ALL the sources in your clipboard for EVERY data
field that was not blank.

I believe that the better solution would be to change the function of the
'ALT 3' routine would be to add ALL the sources in your clipboard to ONLY
the ONE field that you desired to source.

This would provide the best of this source routine actions from both v7 &
v6.

Suggestion:The following is an LUG exchange concerning the loss to using
the

multi source feature in V6 deluxe.

I agree that the V6 ability to add multi sources to a single item [like
birth] was very good.

Example, you have located a family on multi census records and want to
use
one clipboard click to add all the different sources to a single item
[like

birth]

It's loss is already missed.
-

With the change in V7, now you have to quick load each source to the
clipboard and then click again to add it to a single item [like birth]

The other new button [or ALT-3] added is to add a single source to
'EVERY'
item that is other than blank [like name, birth, bap, death, burial] which
it

really ..OVERKILL.

Why not allow this same button add all the up to 5 sources to a single
highlighted item [like birth]

So far I have not located how to
"ASSIGN MORE THAN ONE SOURCE AT A TIME"
There seems to be no way to accomplish this feature.

I have been using the Help file for Clipboard Sources [5-1182] which
apprarently STILL need corrections.

Any assistance/comments would be appreciated

Yes, I know what you are talking about and I do save multiple clipboards
frequently but Legacy 6 had a bit of a short cut built in. Instead of
hitting the little blue arrow thingie to add more clipboards you could just
highlight one in the list and hit the copy button (the little icon that
looks like two pieces of paper) and it would ask you if you wanted to
overwrite or append. Now you only have the option to overwrite.

I wish I could include a graphic. If, she is referring to the five sources
available shown by five different tabs, we seem to have more now, albeit
pretty well hidden. Michele, please try this and see if it answers your
query:

1. Open Legacy
2. Select someone, to go to that person's Individual Information window.
3. Click the books icon, the icon for sources. (Ta da, it opens the Source
Clipboard!)
4. Please look at the bottom right area of this window where it says Save
A Clipboard. You can save TEN Clipboards! That is double the five we had
in Legacy 6. Is this what you are asking about?

The source clipboard in V7 appears to be a singular source at a time, with
no multiple clipboard option.

I've wondered this same thing lately. I never quite got the hang of the
source clipboard in V6, but V7 is pretty simple and easy.

Sorry, but since I could not understand 'appending' to a source, decided to
watch who else answered. What do you mean? I have some sources, which are
correspondences to me from family memebers, (Source name = Smith, John) that I
include in the 'text of source' the transcripts of each letter, then put a
carriage returns to separate each letter from his/her other letters, but that
did not seem to be what you were asking. I also have many census sources such
as 'USA, IL, Cook, Chicago, 1930', which appending onto the TEXT in Supervisors
District/Enumerators District order.
I guess the actual question is can you give an example of a source you want to
append?

"The Source Clipboard is a feature in Legacy that can tremendously increase the

Since I never used it, prefering to work with only one source at a time (Not

Next: for the second part of the question
Use the 2nd condition to Look for whom? = Marriage
Where to Look? = Marrige Date
How to Look? = Before

Now, you should have all the people in your DB married from 1700-1800 in your

You do not have to keep going back to the individual to add a new sources to
the clipboard. You can save up to 10 sources on the clipboard as you could
in Version 6 .When you want to add saved source(s) to another individual all
you need to do is right click on the "Open source clipboard" blue triangle
in the new assigned sources window and a dropdown list displays all saved
sources. One click and the source is added. I found the 5 tabs in version 6
confusing and preferred this method more useful

Judy

That is what I am doing now but I didn't have to do it in version 6. Now
I highlight a source and copy it. I open up the other person and copy it
that person. Then I have to go back to the other person and highlight
another source and then go to the 2nd person and copy it.

To clarify... this is if I have TWO sources for one event! I want to copy
BOTH sources at the same time so that I can paste both sources to another
person at one time.

Judy:

I believe you are using the wrong terminology. When you right click on
the "Open source clipboard" button you are actually seeing 10 source
clipboards. In V6, each of those 10 clipboards could have up to 5
citations. In V7 each of the 10 clipboards can have only 1 citation.

Each has its own (different) purpose. For those of us who understand
their use, they are quite useful. As I stated earlier, I believe the
developers made a mistake by completely removing this feature.

Re: [LegacyUG] appending?

2008-09-05 Thread JLB

Michele,

I woke up this morning to a thread called 'Appending' that went the
whole length of my screen. I didn't dare jump in for fear of being
irrelevant. Obviously, I missed the spirit of it. Every few emails
there you were again saying, is essence, EVERYBODY IS MISUNDERSTANDING
ME. That could certainly be the case. 8 or so hours later I see you
still trying to explain yourself. So, I can't resist an answer. No,
you're not losing your mind. Yes, there used to be an option for
'appending'. I thought it was a nuisance to have to make yet another
decision at that point because who would ever want to append to an
existing source? I guess that was the prevailing view and the Legacy
programmers took it out. So, no, you didn't imagine it. But your mind
may be more multi-functional than most as I don't hear anyone else
asking for the reinstatement of this feature. Sorry, I don't know the
cure. I only work with one source document at a time.

You were not appending to an existing source. You were appending an
additional citation to the SOURCE CLIPBOARD! And I for one still use
this feature in V6. I use it all the time when I create one summary
event from several individual (atomic) events. I will copy the citations
from the individual events to the source clipboard (appending as I go),
then paste the entire source clipboard to the summary event in one
button click. I also use this feature when I need to move multiple
citations from one event to another.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7 - Split up to different family groups and Save

2008-09-05 Thread Pat Hickin

Sheelagh,
I did this and basically have been happy with the result -- I have VERY
few connections between the two groups. I think all the objections
people have made are valid. I'm continuing to keep mine split for the
time being, but an added objection to dividng the two groups is in the
Master sources and perhaps the Locations list. Sometimes it means you
have to enter the same source 2x , 1 for each database -- at least I
haven't found a way to copy them. I would certainly never split into
more than 2 databases.

I could never split my mother's maternal and paternal line as there are
WAY too many intermarriages -- it would be hell.

[LegacyUG] Intermarriages

descendants intermarried, and make a list of only intermarriages? I

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7 - Split up to different family groups and Save

2008-09-05 Thread Terri Brown
Sheelagh,

I also have separate files for my genealogy and my husband's. I briefly thought
about splitting them into maternal and paternal lines but decided that is too
many databases to maintain. My father's line goes back to colonial America and
there are A LOT of intermarriages with at least 3 in my direct line. I also
have 3 separate Thompson lines (1 on my mother's line and 2 on my father's) and
2 separate Wilson lines (1 each on my mother's and father's line). I am afraid
that I will someday discover the Thompson lines connect and Wilson lines
connect and then I'd have a mess on my hands. As it is I am hoping that the
Braun line in my tree and the Braun line in my husband's don't "collide"
somewhere along the line in Germany.

On the matter of duplicating sources and locations in each database: Legacy is
supposed to allow you to import sources, locations, etc. from another database.
However there appears to be a bug which prevents the import. When I reported
the bug to support, Sherry responded saying that the bug is known and they are
working on the fix. Hopefully that will be resolved soon. In the meantime, try
this:

Choose the appropriate source/source citation in either the Master Source List
or the List of Assigned Sources for any individual. Go to the Output tab and
highlight the text you wish to copy. Use CTRL + C to copy the highlighted text
(don't try to right-click and copy because it won't work). Paste the text into
a blank Word document or in WordPad (or your preferred text editor). Now you
have all the information you need to recreate that source in another database.

Hope this helps.

Terri

Re: [LegacyUG] Intermarriages

2008-09-05 Thread Robert Carneal
My definition of "intermarriage" is one of brother/sister,
child/parent, uncle/aunt to niece/nephew, first cousin to first
cousin. Given that definition, can I find the marriages that are made
up of those relationships? Umpteenth cousin to Umpteenth cousin
(72nd cousin to 58th cousin for example) marriage are not
intermarriage to my definition, so I wouldn't really care.

Thank you.

Robert

What you are looking for (my translation) is (kind of) a list of all
duplicates from a descendancy report?
