Ruth, And anyone else who has an immediate need for a solution to this bug before Legacy develops a patch. If PDF is working but RTF is not, there are a number of free and pay alternitives for converting PDF into a Word document (which can then be edited). Here are a few: http://www.freepdfconvert.com/convert_pdf_to_source.asp an online converter where you upload the document and receive the converted file http://www.investintech.com/prod_a2d.htm a $49.95 product, BUT it does have a 7 day free trial to be sure it works. Re: [LegacyUG] How many visible tags?
I'm here - plugging away correcting my Word document. I save the .rtf as a .doc because I think it opens faster. I hope that's not one of my problems. I've looked at the .rtf and it doesn't look any different than the .doc, but the .doc opens faster. One thing I feel bad about is I'm having to delete some source numbers that don't correspond to any source citations. I know I'm losing some good source information. But I'm on Chapter 6 of 17 of the first (paternal) book so it's coming. I think there's 20 chapters in the second (maternal side) book. Re: [LegacyUG] How many visible tags?
Michele, I'm not sure how you did this. Saving as a pdf works, and has a pdf extension, not rf1. Additionally, there is definitely data when you output to an rtf, not just a column of strange numbers. Not that there aren't multiple problems, but just a column of strange numbers isn't one of them. Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Report - INDEX problem with Alternate names....
Ok ...have done my playing around with assorted pdf writers and have come to the conclusion that what is needed, after legacy creates the file... are two pieces of software...one is a pdf writer and the other is a conversion tool that removes the nasty little protection on the file that makes pdf such a pain to work...looks great as long as you don't want to change it. Have found one that is free that acts like a printer driver but not sure if its all that useful. Still looking. Have also found a conversion tool that might be wel worth the cost. And there is software out there at a reasonable cost that will convert .pdf files to rtf ones which I think is what Ruth desperately needs.Am still looking for freebies. I've read all your posts, and while I haven't replicated it or tried it (lack of time) the one key factor I see throughout all your posts is that it is an issue in the RTF file. As there are other issues with the RTF file exporting, I would lean towards the RTF export routine built into Legacy 7.0 as being a bust, and therefore a bug. Re: [LegacyUG] Two questions - again!
Tish, I may have missed it but I didn't see where anyone answered your question about opening a zipped backup. So if the question has already been answered, I apologize. If not, let me give it a try. If you are using the zipped backup to restore in Legacy 7, I believe the answer is "No". It's been a few months since I've used that feature but if I recall correctly, you just go to File/Restore Family File. Legacy will then open up a dialogue to Select Family File or Multimedia Backp to Restore (mine opens up in My Documents). Navigate to where you have the zipped backup stored and select the appropriate file. Legacy will restore the file. I think you will also have to restore any multimedia files you backed up in Legacy using the same method. Oh, be sure to close all family files before restoring. If you forget, Legacy will prompt you. Now, if you just want to see what is in the zipped file or manually extract the contents, the answer depends on what version of Windows you use. Windows XP will open zipped files like any other folder. Just double-click the .zip file and it will open. You can use the Extract command on the left of the window. Versions previous to XP require a 3rd party software to open and extract .zip files. I would hope that Vista also opens .zip files without 3rd party software but I don't know. I am still using XP Pro. I hope this answers your question. If I missed something I am sure someone on the list will let us know. Re: [LegacyUG] How many visible tags?
I took your advice, Kirsten, and I saved a decendancy report as an rtf file. You win that one. I saved it and then opened it in MS Word and it was a jumbled mess. There was no data in there at all, only a column of strange numbers. One thing I noticed is that whether I told it to save as an rtf or if I told it to save as a text file or if I told it save it as a pdf it saved the file with an extension of rf1. I don't get that. It should be rtf or txt or pdf. I would think that is part of the problem. It doesn't give me the option to change the file extension. Very interesting indeed. I owe y'all an apology for not taking your concerns more seriously. Why is it saving everything (rft, txt, pdf) wht a rf1 extension which apparently MS Word does not recognize. michele P.S. Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Report - INDEX problem with Alternate names....
As a semi innocent bystander, I know that the Legacy programmer working on this problem, will do the same they did back in L4 for me, which was compile all the assorted problem messages, and consolidate them into the flavor of fixes. If you are the 'oldest' of similar complains they might ask you for some sort of download. but for my 5 problems, they only needed one of them ultimately, and they fixed all in the same update. At least when they have fixed it, they tell the first askers that it is due in next update. Ruth: If producing that book is necessary before Millennia resolves its issues with the .rtf format, I would suggest you produce the book as a.pdf document and then download a free pdf writing program that you can use to do the editing and sprucing up..very similar to what you would do with your wordprocessor. Everyone, Thick skull finally caught a clue and - as someone said - you have to go into the options at the bottom - TWICE to get the Alternate Names in the name index at the end of a Descendant Book Report!! Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Report - INDEX problem with Alternate names....
When running a DESCENDANT BOOK REPORT, there are TWO places for selecting options. One of them is called INDEX OPTIONS. This does not have anything to do with the MASTER NAME INDEX. You have to tick the Include Alternate Names option in this section in order to get them included in the Index. Ruth is correct that they do not show up in an rtf output. However, they do show up in a pdf output, or a screen preview. I am beginning to feel as frustrated as Ruth!!! Let me try ONE MORE TIME... I turn on the INCLUDE ALTERNATE NAMES in the Master Name INDEX. It DOES NOT include Alternate Names in the Name List at the end of the report. Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Report - INDEX problem with Alternate names....
Jessica, You've got it correctly. And there is more than one bug when the descendent book report transfers from Legacy to a Word .rtf file. And when I use the Publishing Center, there are even more problems. At the moment I have 17 separate chapters which I hope to compile into one book and I'm going through them all line by line eliminating the errors, adding code so Alternate Names print in the Name Index, and so forth. The .rtf export route is a bust, as you say. Ruth - Original Message - From: "Jessica Morgan" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Wednesday, September 10, 2008 11:43 AM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Report - INDEX problem with Alternate names It appears to me that the problem is pointedly with the output method you are using. To be clear: Descendant Report EXPORT to RTF is NOT showing alternate names Fix tried has included deleting the Descendant.usr file to no avail. Your alternate names ARE showing up in the program interface itself, as well as the PREVIEW of the DESCENDANT report on screen. However, when you activate transferring to RTF, they do NOT show up. Am I correct? (The all caps are for emphasis purposes for clarity only.) Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Report - INDEX problem with Alternate names....
WOW! I am beginning to feel as frustrated as Ruth!!! Let me try ONE MORE TIME... I turn on the INCLUDE ALTERNATE NAMES in the Master Name INDEX. When running a DESCENDANT BOOK REPORT. - I check INCLUDE ALTERNATE NAMES. The resulting report (in PREVIEW or .PDF) does INCLUDE Alternate Names (AKAs) in the narrative part. It DOES NOT include Alternate Names in the Name List at the end of the report. (I can send .pdf to an Email address but not to the list) If we choose Alternate names - they should be in the Name list for easy reference. Hope that clarifies things... Jess, Apparently you came in in the middle - I said nothing about RTF. Even in the PREVIEW (or .pdf) [of the DESCENDANT BOOK REPORT] - the name list (at the end) does NOT contain any AKA (Alternate Names). They show up in the narrative part - just not in the Name Index (at the end of the report). It was Ruth dealing with the RTF. Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Report - INDEX problem with Alternate names....
It appears to me that the problem is pointedly with the output method you are using. (The all caps are for emphasis purposes for clarity only.) Re: [LegacyUG] Index - Ron, Richard, Boyd
I would expect to see (on the wife side) Domenica De Marco. When going to Individual Information Screen I expect to have Given: Domenica Surname: De Marco OR Given: Domenica De and Surname: Marco. In the Add/Edit Name Given: Margaret De Surname: Marco OR Given: Margaret Surname: De Marco. For my personal choice, I actually use 'de' instead of 'De' and put it as if it is a middle name, from when I had PAF2, which had 3 name parts, instead of 2. Since you did not in your chart below, break it up as I did I can't tell if we match exact. I am guessing that they don't. 'I go to Name Index at end of report and Insert the index It says De Marco Domenica No Margaret' There should be either (depending on indexing choices?) De Marco Domenica Margaret OR De Marco, Domenica De Marco, Margaret OR you may get , Margaret (all the other no surname people then the As, Bs, Cs, and some Ds then) De Marco, Domenica I am hoping you now see what is 'wrong' in your DB, or it may be a real bug, because I can not think of any other ways to do it? Morning, Ron. That's exactly what I have done with one exception. I increate it in .rtf format and the AKA isn't there. It is there if I do Preview as you did, but it doesn't transfer over to Word in .rtf format. The same thing happens with Sources: okay in Preview but not in .rtf. If you have not got all three then you will not have any settings for the missings ones. I do not know how this can come about, nor the effect it would have, as when a .usr file is deleted a new one is created with the default settings. Thus, if you do not have the Descendant.usr file, then reinstallation is probably the best option. For the puposes of this excercise, I have included the following 3 choices in my file: 1. A nickname in quotes in the person's Name field 2. An AKA for both the first and surname using the 3-head Icon 3. I though that with Version 7 they were going to make all 9 tags visible on the family view screen but it didn't happen. Does anyone know why? I use the tags all the time and only being able to see 3 is a bit of an inconvenience. There is room on the screen to show all 9. michele Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp

Re: [LegacyUG] Get your w4tch now
Bill, I've e-mailed Geoff directly asking about this, as I got two copies of the same e-mail. Looking at the headers of the e-mail, there seems to be some connection with an Argentinian domain called speedy.com.ar, so I imagine Geoff's e-mail has been spoofed in some way. Just delete it and/or treat it as spam.
