[LegacyUG] Trying to move Legacy from C drive to new E drive

2008-10-13 Thread Joan S.
Hi.

My sort of old computer is filling up so I bought a 100GB external hard drive.
I had hoped to put my Legacy program and all the related data, photos, scans,
etc onto this new E drive. I hoped to get all my Legacy stuff off the C drive
totally.

I successfully moved Legacy there and all the data files. But could not get the
multimedia stuff to link to the new drive. The multimedia data was on the E
drive, just couldn't access it through the individual family member screens.

I looked on the Options, Customize, Locations page and it sure seemed as if all
the paths were ok, but when I tried to open pictures attached to people on the
E drive, nothing happened. I tested the Multimedia paths on that same page and
it said there were no problems but obviously there were.

At this point I have put everything back on the C drive as I got very scared.
Is there any easy way to start again and just move everything to the E drive?

I also read the help page on the Legacy site regarding moving files from one
computer to another. That is sort of what I am doing but not really. What I am
doing is changing paths right? In any event, that page stated that moving the
multimedia info is more tricky than moving the data.

Please just give me some advice - from beginning to end - to help me move
Legacy and all related files from C drive to E drive. Then I'll do it again.

Thanks in advance,

Joan

RE: [LegacyUG] Trying to move Legacy from C drive to new E drive

2008-10-13 Thread ronald ferguson

Joan,

It really is easy. Move everything you wish to the E Drive, which you
successfully did before. To link the pictures click on a missing picture in
Legacy and you will see a pop-up which offers to search your browser for the
picture or you can search for yourself. Opt for the latter and browse to where
the picture now is and select it. All Legacy pictures in that folder will now
be known to Legacy. You will need to repeat this for one picture in each the
folders in which a picture is used by Legacy.

You may also like to go to Options>Customise>Locations and change the paths to
the new ones.

RE: [LegacyUG] Pros and Cons of Notes vs. Events Usage

2008-10-13 Thread Boyd Miller
This thread has turned up some very interesting uses of the program's
fields.
I use the Events and Notes for two totally different purposes. The Events
are for the Chronology screen, (or in a printout that doesn't have any Notes
included), primarily as a research tool. This way the sentence wording and
presentation isn't very critical. The events are are all sourced so I can
go back to verify any conflicts.
I then put much of the same information into the Notes, in time sequence,
but in a better and more readable narrative format. The sources for Notes
are rearranged to as far as possible into the same date sequence as the
narrative of the Notes.
Any narrative report is then printed with the Notes but without any of the
Events, so that it reads as a better story.
This process means that many sources are entered in duplicate (in both Event
and Notes). This is a small cost to get sources printed out with both a
research listing of the Events or a chronology, and with a Narrative report
that has the Notes.
My Research notes are in a mixture of formats, often as they were obtained
from the source, and with miscellaneous questions and comments on
reliability. Often they have the source's list name in the text, and I try
to keep them in a semblance of date order. These are not used in any of the
narrative reports.

I utilize the Private Notes feature in the Notes section in order to enter
personal information about a living person that I do not want included in
any printed reports or uploaded to my website. Some of these include
illnesses, personal struggles with addictions, and family problems.

I also use Research Notes to enter information about a person with the same
surname who I think may be a possible relation. For example, after entering
a family's information from a census record, I review that page and a few
pages before and after that page for others with surnames that I am working
on in that location. When I find one that I cannot immediately connect, I
add their information to the Research Notes for further investigation at
another time.

I love the Events feature and the way it can be customized. For me, adding
custom Events increases the value of the Chronology feature.

Re: [LegacyUG] Prevent import of Ancestry.Com UID

2008-10-13 Thread Melody B
I did not receive any answer from Legacy.

I haven't had tried to import since that time - just not much need.
Also it occurred to me that perhaps this was a way to keep match
Ancestry records up with ones previously downloaded - again something
I haven't really looked into since I haven't had much need.

Ancestry won't allow reimport of an exported tree into the same tree
it started from. It's always an all or nothing thing. So when I
export my tree up to Ancestry I have to create a new tree. I hate
doing that because then I lose all the media connections to census
records and all the census stuff I've already connected starts popping
up as new hints. You'd think that Ancestry would at least recognize
its own source records I understand the notion that indexing may have
changed while the data was "out" of Ancestry. But. It's likely that
would only affect a portion of the records - and it'd be great if even
a few records stayed connected. Also, since Ancestry won't recognize
data that was exported from it - they don't actually re-utilize the
UIDs. Sigh.

I'll have to remember to try out what you said. If the UIDs from
Ancestry truly are totally useless then it would be very nice if I
rarely had to deal with them. I'm tired of most of my people being
considered different simply because of a stupid note placed due to an
Ancestry goof-up.

Thanks,
Melody

Re: [LegacyUG] Prevent import of Ancestry.Com UID

2008-10-13 Thread Garnet Quigley

Melody,

Has your issue been resolved since your exchange with Customer Support?

My understanding is that the 36 character Unique Identification Number
is designed to facilitate merges/imports for those software or websites
that support it. I found the following on another software's site:
"GEDCOM Import - It was discovered that Ancestry.com does not follow the
standard when exporting GUIDs. The standard tag of "_UID" was not used,
but rather "UID". AQ was adjusted to treat the "UID" from Ancestry.com
the same as it treats the "_UID" from all other sources."

Until either Ancestry.com moves to the standard or Legacy modifies their
software to recognize and work automatically with this anomaly, you
might want to try the following. When I import a gedcom that originated
from Ancestry.com I have used the "map to a recognized tag" button in
Legacy and selected "_UID" which Legacy indicates is the "Unique
Identifier". To be honest I don't know where Legacy puts it after that,
but at least it does not appear as an Event or Note or otherwise clutter
up your tree as far as I can tell.

Does anyone know where the Unique Identifier is stored or how to access
it in Legacy if for whatever reason someone wants to?

Subject: [LegacyUG] Intellishare - Step by step - Legacy 7 Deluxe

Hello All,

I have a few questions on how to start the intellishare system.

I have looked at the manual, and the help file in Legacy, and on the
archives.

I could not find step by step instructions to follow.

I will be the Keeper. I have found a way to send the file to the family
member.

It did not say, so I used the zip file (backup file).

How in Legacy 7 Deluxe do I start the Intelishare (Keeper)?

Do I need to resend the file since I have not started the Intellishare yet?

When the family member saves the file I sent does he save it by the same
file name, or create a new file name?

When he sends me the family file back how do I know the difference between
the keeper file, and his file?

Thanks for any help, or suggestions,
Debbie Freeman

Re: [LegacyUG] Trying to move Legacy from C drive to new E drive

2008-10-13 Thread JLB
You can't install Legacy on an external hard-drive. You can copy all
the installed files from your C-drive to the E-drive and then use the
files on the E-drive and back up the files to that location and move
your E-drive to other computers that have Legacy installed, if you want
to do that. To save space you can move all your picture files to the
E-drive only, but the installation of Legacy must be on your C-drive.

And I don't see why Legacy couldn't be installed (and work) on an

If I'm reading this right, your 'external' hard-drive was actually a
second internal HD. I believe the reason that it won't install to an
external hard-drive is that there's no registry there. It's a portable
device like a flash-drive, just bigger.

Yes.

There is no registry on my E: drive either (the registry is on C:), but
it installed and worked just fine.

>It's a portable device like a flash-drive, just bigger.

I don't think Legacy has a problem being installed and running on a
"portable" device ... as long as you always run Legacy on that one PC
(in other words, don't port it to another PC).

***

Legacy will create a folder on the E: drive and install the Legacy
program and loads of other stuff there. But it will also update the
registry and drop additional files (dll's, etc.) in the C: drive. So if
you unplug the E: drive and move it to another PC that doesn't have
Legacy installed, Legacy will not run because things will be missing.

Now I have an external HD on this PC. But I really don't want to try
installing another copy of Legacy onto that drive for fear of breaking
my existing copy on the C: drive. Not that I think I will do any serious
damage. But I don't want to make more work for myself than I need to.

At the risk of getting into a debate on semantics, I agree with Dennis; nothing
has changed and I have mine installed on my E-drive which is an external HD.

Naturally, because the register is on the C Drive the Millennia entries are in
that register and point to E:/Legacy/. To be perfectly clear that is where the
program is and the data is also on the E drive.

I did not see Joan's original post (must have been HTML). But from what
I saw quoted she was not intending to port the external drive from one
PC to another. So the answer to her question is "yes", she should be
able to install Legacy on her E: drive (as other posters have done).
Having answered that question, she still has a problem with her
multimedia files which needs to be addressed. She said she looked at the
Locations tab and tested the multimedia paths, which sounds right. But
since she reverted to a C: install, I am not sure we can help her
troubleshoot this anymore (unless someone else has another idea). If she
tries again to install on E:, then we can probably be more helpful.

Any other ideas out there?

I again thank you all for such awesome responses! I've definitely
learned a lot about events in such a short time!

If any of the Legacy team are reading, I'd like to hear some input
from you all regarding Legacy's stance on the use of notes vs. events.

>From the Legacy home page (within Legacy 7.0) I had put in a
suggestion to add both Military and Education tabs to the notes
section, following the General, Research, and Medical theme. When one
uses notes as much as I did/do, it seems like a fabulous idea. Lo and
behold I receive a reply that no, those things belong in Events. (I am
not, in any way, demeaning Legacy's response or thought process on the
subject.)

At first my reaction, knowing very little about events, was of the
"ugh, that stinks" variety. Then, after learning so much about events,
and staying up to the wee hours last night plugging away at writing
events, setting up sentence structures, and converting some of my
notes, I realized that Legacy Staff are correct in their decision.

>From one side of the prism.

See, I decided to convert some of my notes to events, as well as leave
some of the notes as notes. Because to me, there is a distinct
difference. Which also seems to be the general consensus I'm getting
in responses. Some people use events exclusively, others notes
exclusively, and most people use both in tandem.

And from that, I think I'll jump in the ring of, why not have them in
both places? (Military and Education canned "places" to put both
events and notes.)

I was also privileged to see straight from Legacy output reports of
some of the wonderful LUGers, and I must say that, utilized fully,
Legacy can stand on it's own without any necessary help from other
programs. -- At least where reports and books are concerned.

I've learned greatly today and yesterday, therefore it's been a good day.

Thanks,

have doubts, I go to print preview, then print page one only. If it looks good,
I print the whole document. I usually need to go in and rewrite some of the

Re: [LegacyUG] Pros and Cons of Notes vs. Events Usage

2008-10-13 Thread Thomas Herson
I just don't understand why you are so determined that Legacy include a tab
for Military and Education notes. Military and Education are events and, if
you wish to expand on the information, why not just enter your notes in the
Notes section for the particular fact? I'm not aware that Notes do not print
in most reports. Why add two more Notes tabs for these two things? If you
expect Legacy to do that, someone else will want special Notes tabs for
Occupation, Census, Hobbies, etc. etc.

RE: [LegacyUG] Intellishare - Step by step - Legacy 7 Deluxe

2008-10-13 Thread Ron Taylor
One caveat to intellishare merging...read on.

A record deleted in one copy of the database must be deleted in all the other
copies.  After combining all copies of the database with the "keeper", any
deleted record which was not deleted in all copies will still be in the
resulting combined database.

It is therefore necessary that each deletion be recorded so that all copies of
the database can have the same record deleted before they are combined.

Example:  The "keeper" has a family with 6 children.  He copies the
database for a relative to use for updates, etc.  The keeper
subsequently deletes 1 of the children from the family leaving 5
children.  If he then merges the copy of the database from his
relative, the family will again have 6 children because the relative
did not delete the same child from that family.

An alternative solution is to have the "keeper" perform all deletions after
combining the copies and then make new copies for each researcher.  This still
requires each researcher to record the deletions he wants to be done so that
the "keeper" can either delete or not delete the records in question.

A special form of deletion is when two records are merged in any copy of the
database. Every time records are merged, one of them is deleted and so a merge
always involves a deletion...therefore each merge must be recorded and executed
in all copies of the database before the databases are merged. To negate a
merge by one of the researchers is more complex so it is easier for each
researcher to list the merges needed, then have the "keeper" combine the
databases using intellishare, then execute each merge approved by the research
group, and finally make new copies of the database for each researcher.  This
method would follow the pattern described above for deletions so that all
merges and deletions would be done by the "keeper".

One more idea in combining the copies of the database is to renumber the RINS
and MRINS with a range of numbers above the current highest numbers.  If my
highest RIN is 164720 then I might make the imported copy start at 20 or
something even higher.  Then after the intellishare merge is complete, I can
check RIN numbers above 20 to see which records were new versus merged.
Also, in the merge process, it is obvious which record was from the "keeper"
file because it will be lower than 20 and the records from the researcher
copy will have RINS above 20.  The same logic applys to the MRINS.

All other additions and modifications will be handled as described elsewhere.

Shirley,

If you mean the set-up file from C:\Legacy (assuming you installed using the
defaults) then no.

You need to download the full set-up file and save it to somewhere convenient
and then copy it to your lap-top (say, to your Desk-top) and then double click
to install. You can then delete the set file when done.

BTW I do not understand your previous email if you mean in View>Name List then
what Tabs do you mean?

Re: [LegacyUG] Moving Legacy Setup

2008-10-13 Thread SHIRLEY ANDERSON
Thank you Ron and Dan.

Ron, I did save the setup file to my desktop and used it to install Legacy on
my desktop. Now what I want to do is to copy that file (Legacy6Setup.exe) to my
flash drive and from there to my laptop. And then use it to upgrade my laptop
from 5 to 6.

With regard to the other question, when I open the Name List, the left hand
side is a list of the people in the file. The right hand side is a series of
tabs that contain information about the selected individual. I opted not to
have the Temple information, so I have six tabs: Detail, Edit, Events, Notes,
Family and Sources. It is those labels that I need larger. My poor old eyes
don't like that small print. I have increased the font sizes in the rest of
the program as much as I could, and where I can't, I can copy the information
and work on it in another program if I have to. But that doesn't work for
labels.

I do a lot of my work with the name list or search list open, so these tabs are
important to me.

RE: [LegacyUG] Pros and Cons of Notes vs. Events Usage

2008-10-13 Thread Tom Montgomery
I am getting into this late so forgive me if off base. But, If you place the
word notes with brackets, [notes], in the sentence override field you can
enter any wording you like in the notes field - no need to be concerned
about the built in structure for any event. I use this feature more than the
alternative as I prefer to have my own wording for most event entries.

You need to check the sentence structure for any event - look in a print
preview and see if it makes sense - sometimes needs some tweaking!

Ron:

Be careful when you use the word "reattach". I think Joan is talking
about unlinking the existing bad photo and then linking the good photo.
If she does that I do not think Legacy will not fix all the others. This
would be a lot of work.

I think she needs to follow your original instructions.

I don't think you can actually make those larger, but you can adjust the
other font sizes under Options/Zoom on the Name List screen. Look at it
this way - there's only six of them so you might be able to memorize them.

2008-10-13 Thread Byron Schafbuch
Hello Joan

2 Queries. First, in the tab, you have also
changed the default media locations also to point to E:\...??

Next-With the tab, does it still
list your OLD locations? If so, you will need to merge your -OLD- locations
over to the -NEW- locations. As such:

1-you would highlight the OLD location,(ie. C:\pics\family-1)

2-then hit the button on the bottom labeled:
,
This button will change to .

3-now highlight the NEW location, (ie. E:\pics\family-1) then hit the
 button.

The will change the -OLD- paths in the database over to the -NEW- paths for
all those media
files that were in the OLD location, over to the NEW location. (ie
C:\pics\...
will now be changed to E:\pics...)

You would need to repeat for each -OLD- path existing..

RE: [LegacyUG] Pros and Cons of Notes vs. Events Usage

2008-10-13 Thread Jan Roberts
I don't do this myself, but another option you could consider is to
restructure most of your Event sentences so they only contain Notes and
Sources, although personally I believe a date filed would be most desirable
as it will sort the events by date. My biggest 'con' re the use of freeform
Notes only would be that if you later discover something that happened
between two other dates you would have to search to find where to insert the
new information.

If you were to structure your Event Sentences Definitions along the lines
of:
Tick Show a Date Field. Leave all Sentence Definitions empty (delete what
is currently there) - except the one which says 'If all Fields filled' and
in that box type replace what is there with [Notes] [Sources]. You could
also put the same definition in the one that says 'If Desc. Date and Place
are empty', so that if you didn't actually have a date it wouldn't matter.

However, if you wanted just one Event Sentence to cover all types of 'events
/ facts / notes' you would have to create a new Event. To do this click on
Add Event (for any individual) then click on the little blue arrow next to
the Even box (top of the next screen that appears), then click on the Add
button (third down, right hand side of the Master Event Definition box that
appears). Give it a name that begins with AA so it always appears at the
top of the Event list when you want to use it - otherwise you've got to
scroll down to find it, then make the above changes to the Sentence
Definitions.

Cheers,
Jan

I also prefer using events. I actually do not use notes at all. I found
that notes do not print on several of the reports I like to use and when
they printed they often showed up in stranges places in the report. With
events, everything prints in order, with sources, with pictures, and I
always use my own wording (at least in the reports I use).

This also saved me from trying to decide if something should be considered
an event, or should be included in notes. I like everything to show in my
reports and it annoyed me that certain reports did not allow the inclusion
of notes (why bother entering them if you can't see them in a report) so I
moved totally away from them and kept it simple: events only.

Experiement with the different reports and see what you like in the end
results. I played around for a long time before deciding on a course of
action and I've been happy with the results. You may like using notes for
different reasons.

Hi Jessica,

Before using Legacy, I used an event driven genealogy program so I'm
comfortable creating and using events.

Even though I did at first place some items in the general notes, I've since
begun replacing all my note content with events. For general notes, I just
created an event called Note. For most things, I like to use specific event
names, such as the obituary event. Most events I've changed the sentence
wording to be [notes][sources] as I prefer to write out what I want to say.
A few, such as a census or an obituary, I begin with a canned sentence,
depending on what fields I fill in.

Bear in mind, I do not wish to take my material into a word processor. I
want my reports to read as well as they can, straight from the program and I
like to include photos in my reports. These are my personal considerations.

Three things that come to mind are the fact you can easily shift the events
in the timeline, you can attach a photo to each event and have it included
in the reports and you can easily source each event.

I'm sure other Legacy users will chime in with favorite ways of handling
things. It's nice to have choices and you're wise to ask for idea's before
you get too far into your family history. I've picked up so many helpful
ideas from other users over the years and know how helpful various
suggestions can be.

Good luck with your family history projects.

Mary

I searched the archives and didn't find quite what I'm looking for. If
this has previously been discussed, forgive me. (I've been on the LUG
for two or three years and don't recall it, but that doesn't mean
much.)

I've been working the last year or two on maternal family, from
previously published books, and have utilized the notes section quite
heavily. I started using notes when I began using Legacy, and have
just continued to do so fo
