[LegacyUG] Chart

2008-10-20 Thread Laurie Hicks
Hi

Is it possible to print out a chart in Legacy in book form, similar to
Family Tree and can I include the relationship of myself to other people?.
If a person has a Title eg a King or Princess is that included in the name?

Regards

Laurie

2008-10-20 Thread Lhite31
I know all about that. That is where my computer stopped responding at 7%
downloaded. I also went to Legacy's Home Page, but there it wants to download
the whole program. All I want is the update. That is what I ask for. Can the
update be downloaded without downloading the whole program?
In RootsMagic, you get an e-mail when an update is available with a
clickable link in the e-mail. Most of the updates will download in a matter of
minutes even on dial-up.

Kaled,

Is any software perfect out of the box? :-0.

The best peiece of advice I would give you is that when entering locations
ignore the 4 field naming convention - they are not suitable for the UK (and
much of Europe). Enter in the Location Field what you believe to be the correct
location in full.

Then go to ViewMaster ListsLocationsSort and change the direction of sort to
Right to left. Thus when looking for a location it can easily be found eg.
Country, County, Town, District, locality - England, Salford, Eccles, Winton. I
also add the the house into this eg. 303 Eccles New Road and only use the
Address function for living people - before the pedants jump in, I stress that
this is a personal choice but I Find it helps when using the mapping function.

Note also that there are source templates for parts of the UK so when sourcing
for a template put the country in the search box. They are not complete as yet
but often one of the existing ones can be adapted.

No doubt others will add to the list.

 Hi, Ron --

Well, obviously I've just made a total mess of this, since no one
seems to understand what I'm talking about, so I'll try it this way --

What FIELD do I attach the source citation to? I know children are
linked through birth certificates, etc., but what FIELD do I use for
this in the *mother* or *father's* individual information screen?
Yes, I source the child's birth date, etc., with the birth certificate
in the *child's* information screen -- but what about the parents'
 information screens?

I agree that if I have a birth certificate source, anyone reading the
report can probably assume that the child is linked to the parents
through that source. But what if this is *before* birth certificates?
And I'm using a combination of other information and sources to
determine that Baby Doe is the child of John Doe and Jane Doe?

If I have a will, some deeds, some newspaper articles and some census
information that all points to this being the child of these parents,
what FIELD in the parent's information screen do I use to show that
this source, or these sources, link these individuals that will also
show up on an ancestor or descendant report -- other than the father
or mother relationships in the Children's settings?

Or is it just the fact that the child shows up in the report as the
child of this marriage, and then when someone asks me how I determined
that, I then tell them how I did it? And hope that they ask me before
 I'm dead myself?

 Kris

 ronald ferguson wrote:
 Kris,

You write: My point is, if I have the child-parent relationship
 setting off,
then there's nothing in the report that shows how I made the
connection between that child and those parents. Thus my original
 question.

I feel that this statement is too strong and rather depends on how
one arranges the reports. For example they can be shown to be
linked to their parents in the Sources by a birth certificate or by
a census, admittedly the latter cannot always (arguably never) be
used as proof of the parentage.

I do not usually publish details of the child status as such, but
it can often be inferred from date of birth.

Kaled,

Sorry, the example I gave should have read England, Lancashire, Salford,
Eccles, Winton. Also many locations would not have a city which is used in the
4 field convention - and I hate multiple commas in locations! Country, County,
Parish is very common in earlier centuries.

Re: [LegacyUG] Considering purchasing GenSmarts Personal Historian

2008-10-20 Thread Melody B
I use GenSmarts. I am a relative newbie at genealogy so that may be
part of it. I find that GenSmarts helps me look at things from a
different perspective. I also find that it alerts me to sources that
online that I didn't realize were online (such as a website by the
state of Missouri where I was able to access the death certificate of
the first ancestor in America in one line.)

So I find it fairly useful. I don't use it on a every day basis but
do use it after every several days of other research.

 Hi all,

GenSmarts 2.0: This sounds like a great program for analysing my database
for under-analysed areas of my database and for possible sources to check.
However, my concern is that I live in New Zealand and most of my ancestors
came from either England, Ireland or Scotland. Is the program specifically
geared towards mostly American sources (census, BDM information, etc.) or is
there enough references to outside of America for it to be of use to me?

Personal Historian: Again, this would be of great use to me in creating
personal histories but American timelines, historical facts and cultural
trivia are of no use to me. Does the program cater for cultural trivia, and
 globally historical facts as well?

Would both these programs still be worth the $US29.95 each if they did have
a primarily American focus? If any listers out there from other areas of the
world can help with this I would be greatly appreciative.

They both sound like great tools to utilise.

Re: [LegacyUG] Considering purchasing GenSmarts Personal Historian

2008-10-20 Thread Tracy Skegg
I'm in Australia and use GenSmarts, I like the sandbox feature where
you set up your own complex searches of your Legacy file. From that I
could gauge which people to look at for military records, indexes etc,
because GenSmarts makes guesses at dating for individuals. While the
suggested dating is useful as a guide, don't completely trust it. You
may find some other GenSmarts' elements useful, where it suggests some
online searching for some of your gaps, Legacy now has more powerful
searching so it covers some of GenSmarts features.

I've only just bought Personal Historian, so I can't really comment on
it yet. It's supposed to help you write out your personal history on
various topics. I've noticed that it will suggest various themes and
the help section was useful. I have plans on using it and mixing the
themes and some of the interview questions from Legacy to get
information in oral/video history format, then I'll use Personal
Historian to help me flesh it out into a more readable format - I like
using the Fog Index for that. So yes there are many Americanisms in
the programs, but you can pick and choose the elements that are useful
to you.

Cheers
Tracy

RE: [LegacyUG] Separating a family for webpages

2008-10-20 Thread ronald ferguson

Syble,

Since you have already used my suggestion as to what might be the problem, it
is necessary to look further. I have created Pedigree web pages using your
formatting set up and it worked OK. So, the problem is not with the Web Page
Creation function per se.

Try deleting the WebPage.usr file in C:\Legacy (if you are using the defaults),
but a word of caution all you settings will be lost so I suggest that you make
a note of them, then you can put them back! Before putting them back you might
like to try creating the pages using the defaults and if that doesn't work the
problem lies elsewhere.

Please come back and let us know how you got on - if it doesn't work we can
have another think.

In Legacy, go to the Legacy Home page. On the right the first item is
Statistics, the second is Updates. Go to Updates. Click on Updates. It will
go out to Legacy's web page (if you're connected to the internet) get the
update for you.

I repeat, it is also in the drop-down menu for Downloads on the Legacy Home

I know all about that. That is where my computer stopped responding at 7%
downloaded. I also went to Legacy's Home Page, but there it wants to download
the whole program. All I want is the update. That is what I ask for. Can the
update be downloaded without downloading the whole program?

In RootsMagic, you get an e-mail when an update is available with a clickable
link in the e-mail. Most of the updates will download in a matter of minutes
even on dial-up.

The numbers that are printed by Legacy on a pedigree chart have absolutely
nothing to do with RINs, or who you enter first. (Pedigree charts will
always be appropriately numbered regardless of whose pedigree chart you
 print).

I completely ignore RINs and MRINs. The only value they have, in my opinion,
is for people who choose to file their paper files by number (I'm an
alphabetical person). And possibly, in some cases, to help distinguish two
people of the same name (though I use other means, like their birth dates or
spouse name, to make that distinction).

Otherwise, they are just something else to clutter the brain, IMO.

It doesn't matter who you enter first; you could start with a 3rd cousin
twice removed. If you decide you do have a use for the RINs, you can always
change them later if you don't like how they are automatically assigned.

[LegacyUG] Germany and Czech Locations

2008-10-20 Thread Christina
I was wondering about entering locations such as,
Kingdom of Saxony, Germany
and
Kingdom of Bohemia, which stood on its own until it changed hand to
Austria, but still referred to as a kingdom and then when it was
changed to eventually Bohemia, Czechoslovakia.

On that would you list: Kingdom of Bohemia, then Kingdom of Bohemia,
Austria and then Bohemia, Czecholslovkia?

RE: [LegacyUG] Separating a family for webpages

2008-10-20 Thread Syble Glasscock
I closed Legacy and  shut down the computer last night, this morning I decided
to try it again, checked and setting were still as they were, and it worked
like it should, I have the Surnames and the Name ListStrange???   I've
been having a few weird things happening.  A couple of months ago, I had Legacy
to shut down by itself, would give me an error message, and a second later
would shut down.  Well, it's done that two times in the last day or so, it's
was so quick and caught me off guard, I didn't get the error message, both
times I was adding a source, and as best I remember that's what I was before.
I've added many sources from that time until now and it has worked fine.

I haven't deleted V6 yet, I don't use it, but I do have some files I haven't
imported into V7.  Would there be a chance this is causing a problem.   I don't
remember having any problems with V5 or V6, but V7 is a different story.  I
have the build version 7.0.0.55, any ideas when they are going to have another
update.  I combined two family files recently and it was almost as if it just
scattered them throughout the Legacy family file.. Certainly people were added
5-6 times and I had some distant relatives that actually went in as my
children, it was a mess, numerous ones were added twice, I finally just deleted
it.

Syble,

Since you have already used my suggestion as to what might be the problem, it
is necessary to look further. I have created Pedigree web pages using your
formatting set up and it worked OK. So, the problem is not with the Web Page
Creation function per se.

Try deleting the WebPage.usr file in C:\Legacy (if you are using the
defaults), but a word of caution all you settings will be lost so I suggest that
you make a note of them, then you can put them back! Before putting them back
you might like to try creating the pages using the defaults and if that
doesn't work the problem lies elsewhere.

Please come back and let us know how you got on - if it doesn't work we can
have another think.

I tagged a family line #2 inside my database, created the webpages choosing all
with tag #2, when I viewed them in my browser, there are no Surnames list and
the Name List is blank. There were 1297 individuals, so there should be
several
different Surnames. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks,

RE: [LegacyUG] UK customisations

2008-10-20 Thread Richard and Evita Piepho

even in the USA the software is only set up for generic our country is
divided up by ward, city, county, state and if it is rural it is section,
township, county, state ... you just have to put comma in so your report
looks just fine then even cemeteries had sections in them to tell you were
to look for the resting place so just work with it for your needs If you
ask 10 people what they do you will get 10 answers because each family tree is
unique that means millions of unique trees even the places legacy asks
for a description you have to see what verb they are using and then write it
accordingly so it reads as you want in the report you plan to usenow mind
you there is a way legacy will advise but it doesn't always fit you family tree
and there isn't another software out there that will answer everyones needs so
I will just chug along with this excellent legacy software for its better than
some other software I have used Richard From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To:

+0100Kaled, Is any software perfect out of the box? :-0.
The best peiece of advice I would give you is that when entering locations
ignore the 4 field naming convention - they are not suitable for the UK (and
much of Europe). Enter in the Location Field what you believe to be the correct
location in full. Then go to ViewMaster ListsLocationsSort and change
the direction of sort to Right to left. Thus when looking for a location it
can easily be found eg. Country, County, Town, District, locality - England,
Salford, Eccles, Winton. I also add the the house into this eg. 303 Eccles New
Road and only use the Address function for living people - before the pedants
jump in, I stress that this is a personal choice but I Find it helps when using
the mapping function. Note also that there are source templates for parts
of the UK so when sourcing for a template put the country in the search box.
They are not complete as yet but often one of the existing ones can be
adapted. No doubt others will add to the list.Ron Ferguson

Since you have already used my suggestion as to what might be the problem, it
is necessary to look further. I have created Pedigree web pages using your

Try deleting the WebPage.usr file in C:\Legacy (if you are using the

2008-10-20 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
There are two choices for location names. 1. The name of the place at that
time, or 2. the current name for everyplace. For both American and European
locations I have as many as five names for the same place, over different
times. The location notes explain the details. Choice 2 means each time a

 Kingdom of Saxony, Germany
 and
Kingdom of Bohemia, which stood on its own until it changed
 hand to
Austria, but still referred to as a kingdom and then when
 it was
 changed to eventually Bohemia, Czechoslovakia.

On that would you list: Kingdom of Bohemia, then Kingdom of

 Austria and then Bohemia, Czecholslovkia?
