Re: [LegacyUG] Error opening database------could not lock file
Wynthner, I do back up to the hard drive and CD, but also use the flash for everyday opening the file. It's the habit I've got into, I suppose. It's just that I can't open the fdb. file at the moment, from the flash drive, and hoped for some help/clues as to what to do. [LegacyUG] Is there a way to bulk fill in the User ID
- Original Message - From: JLB j...@telus.net To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Sent: Thursday, December 25, 2008 8:55 PM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Is there a way to bulk fill in the User ID field for a tagged list of people? Cathy V., It's not necessary to use the User ID field at all to accomplish a list and a 'quick view'. I was so focused by your focus, I missed the bigger picture. I sort my MRIN's by father's side and mother's side, but the same principals would apply to splitting by 4 grandparents. I use MRIN 1-4999 for my father's side although that's only theoretical. In practice the MRIN's presently in use (ie. with related documents) go up to about 650. My mother's side starts at 5000. At a glance I can see what side of the family I'm on. For four grandparents it could work something like this: 1-1999 grandparent 1 2000-3999 grandparent 2 4000-5999 grandparent 3 6000-7999 grandparent 4 I've only renumbered the MRIN's I have documents for and do that as I go, not ahead of time. That means I ignore anything where the numbers I see are outside where I know my Source Library has gotten to. An alternate place to put MRIN's for backup is in the Marriage User ID fields. - I use the MRIN filing system myself so I'm interested in the extra dimension you're adding to it. As far as numbering, you could split your grandparent's lines by number and be able to identify them that way. Say MRIN's starting with 1, 2, 3 or 4. Depending how far you are into it with your related documents and how much trouble it would be to 'start over'. Dennis K signed his email with 'Legacy Tools' so I assume that's public info. There's something there that would help you with at least one aspect of what you're trying to do. - JL JLog - simple computer technology for genealogists http://www.jgen.ws/jlog *** Holiday discounts on Legacy 7.0, add-ons, books, and more. Gene, I have several flash drives of varying sizes and none of them have a slide anywhere. We also have two MP3 players and they both have slides to lock them. Is there something I am missing? I use the flash drive (updated when we are ready to leave home) to take my data back and forth to my daughter's house but also have my data backed up on a portable hard drive (weekly), send a zipped file to myself on g-mail (monthly) and a partitioned 2nd drive on the computer (at the same I save the daily work). Maybe a little overkill here but don't want to lose my data. [LegacyUG] Storing census data
I have a question I haven't seen asked before. I frequently scan census' would like to keep track of which census data I have perused. I know I can keep track of it in a spread sheet, but is there a way to keep track of it in Legacy. I know I can use the research page for each individual, but I would also like to keep track of the census data I've looked at in general. The only place I can think of is the comments section of the source. I could check it not to show when I print out source information for an individual. Any other ideas? [LegacyUG] Source File ID - Preventing Printing
I have been following a filing recommendation made many years ago by William Dollarhide in Managing a Genealogical Project: Each source document (including copies, notes, transcripts, photos, etc.) is assigned a ID for filing: SURNAME STATE . I've been inserting those identification numbers in my Legacy Master Sources or Source Details as the File ID. Is there any way to prevent those File ID numbers from printing -- when I print citations or source reports? They are irrelevant to the reader, since they merely serve to advise me where I have filed a copy of the source material. When I am filling in the detail info, and come to the ID of Person field, I'm not entirely sure whose name to fill in. I know that in the US censuses from 1840 on back, I can only use the head of household name. Am I correct in continuing to use that for 1850 forward? Re: [LegacyUG] Paths for Photos, documents etc when using both Legacy TNG
Thanks Rush Thanks for your reply. It helped me get this straight in my mind and what you said makes a lot of sense. Allison On Wed, Dec 24, 2008 at 2:41 AM, Rush geneal...@bythedrop.com wrote: Allison Nelson wrote: I have been a Legacy user for many years (still on Version 6 for stability and ease of use issues or until Version 7 gets things dramatically smoothed out). One of the more frustrating aspects of Legacy has been an inabilty to find a way for various family members to all work on the same database simultaneously. I now have a website with TNG that I set up because it will allow us to do this. I have sucessfully imported my Legacy gedcom. I am currently organizing my media files, but got thinking that maybe the way I have always had them (in folders within the Legacy folder) is not the best way for an easy import to TNG. (I know *you do not have to keep your photos within Legacy*, but most people do because that is the way Legacy recommends and it makes it easier to make cds to share with others if everything is in one folder). I have read TNG's forums, wiki etc trying to find info and it seems TNG has trouble recognizing things with the word Legacy in the path. Rather than placing photos and other media and documents inside the Legacy folder, would imports into TNG work better if I just set up my folders in a folder following this path? If I made all my folders for Legacy match the TNG media folders will that help? My Computer/My Documents/ genealogy/photos/photo1.jpg and so on? I can easily repoint Legacy to the right places if I leave my actual file names alone. Does anyone know if this would work? Allison Allison, Use Legacy and TNG to handle all my media files. I use the word 'legacy' in my file path to all my documents and don't have an issue (not saying anyone else might not). Setting up the Legacy and TNG file structure to match has worked quite well for me and would be much easier for future imports, for example: My Legacy install path is D:\Legacy All my media for Legacy sits in a folder called 'docs', D:\Legacy\docs\census or D:\Legacy\docs\marriage, etc. (the folders paths breakdown further for state or year, so a compete file path to a 1930 California census might be: D:\Legacy7\docs\census\California\1930) My server has the same 'docs' directory structure as the Legacy 'docs' folder. My TNG settings for import (TNG Admin Setup Configuration Import Settings) are set as: Local Photo Path(s)*: D:\Legacy7\docs Local Path(s) for Other Media*: D:\Legacy7 (all the other paths are blank) This will import all the *links* to the media, then I use my FTP program (folder sync option) to upload any new media files from my computer to the server. Once the media files are uploaded, you just have to link them through TNG (edit the media, save and it will generate the thumbnail). This might sound like a bit of work, but I can import and link 25-30 photos/documents in less than 15 minutes. TNG can accept different file paths for media, but for my own sanity, its just easier to have both directory structures mirrored. Re: [LegacyUG] A Census Detail Question...
I think Elizabeth's way is a good one. I got started on another system, however, and have simply stuck with it. In the source detail (and citation), I cite the head of household only, unless the household member has special circumstances. For instance, might add a clarification: ... John Adams household, for Clara Gooden, inmate, poor farm; etc. Janis Walker Gilmore (enjoying a post-Christmas quiet) On 12/28/08 2:24 PM, Eliz Hanebury elizhg...@gmail.com wrote: I use for the person I am working on and then for everyone in the household Eliz On Sun, Dec 28, 2008 at 2:04 PM, Roxanne maighe...@yahoo.com wrote: This is another one of those What do others tend to do? questions. It sounds like you just merged all the files which would account for the high number of dups. The Keeper then follows this procedure: Import all copies of the family file into the master copy (after making a backup of course). Press the Merge button and choose Find Duplicates. Re: [LegacyUG] IntelliShare disaster
I sent a copy. Tim Rosenlof wrote: I know the help file may be a bit to understand and will probably be corrected, but you can see in the help file you send a copy of your file to another. That is a copy or backup not a gedcom if that is what happened. The other needs to send a copy or a backup to you, but not a gedcom. The instructions say to import and that may sound like a gedcom, but it is not. It is a copy or backup/restore. The gedcom will give a whole new set of identifiers. After the copy then you merge as intellishare. It speeds through the indentifiers that match, and only brings up the records that did not have the same number for reconciliation, in your case only a handful Tim - Original Message - From: Michael Harnois mdharn...@gmail.com To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Sent: Tuesday, December 23, 2008 7:14 PM Subject: [LegacyUG] IntelliShare disaster I tried today to use IntelliShare and have no idea what went wrong.
