Hi Gene,
There's no slide switch on this flash drive, nor on another I have.
Maybe they are a much newer invention?

I sent a copy.

Tim Rosenlof wrote:
I know the help file may be a bit to understand and will probably be
corrected, but you can see in the help file you send a "copy" of your
file to another. That is a "copy" or backup not a gedcom if that is
what happened. The other needs to send a "copy" or a backup to you,
but not a gedcom. The instructions say to import and that may sound
like a gedcom, but it is not. It is a copy or backup/restore. The
gedcom will give a whole new set of identifiers.

After the "copy" then you merge as intellishare. It speeds through the
indentifiers that match, and only brings up the records that did not
have the same number for reconciliation, in your case only a handful

I tried today to use IntelliShare and have no idea what went wrong. I
had given my wife a copy of the file and she had made changes to
maybe a dozen entries out of about 4000. Imported the file with no
problem. Ran IntelliShare and it came up with 9067783 duplicates to
check. Ideas?

Did you do the merge as indicated below, Selecting the Special
Searches, Intellishare option?
It sounds like you just merged all the files which would account for
the high number of dups.

"The Keeper then follows this procedure:

"Import all copies of the family file into the master copy (after
making a backup of course).

"Press the Merge button and choose Find Duplicates.

"From the Merge Options window, click on the Special Searches tab and
choose the IntelliShare option.

"Press the Continue button in the upper right corner of the Merge
Options window."

I'm trying to print a list of individuals with Tag 4.  I got the error 3265

have 12 of them.  Do I delete all of them, then proceed with the

I think Elizabeth's way is a good one. I got started on another system,
however, and have simply stuck with it.

In the source detail (and citation), I cite the head of household only,
unless the household member has special circumstances. For instance, might
add a clarification:

"... John Adams household, for Clara Gooden, inmate, poor farm;" etc.

If I am using the Census as a Source for names, birth place, age etc
then I put the name of the person concerned in that field. But when I
have created a Census Event and Sourcing that I put "household of of household>" in that field. It makes sense for me to do it that way
because for the Census Event I put the individual's details into the
Desc line and enter the complete household in the Event Notes in the
form "The household comprised X, his wife Y, their son Z and 2 Domestic
Servants".

This is another one of those "What do others tend to do?" questions.

I like to get my census event details pretty exact. When I am filling in
the detail info, and come to the "ID of Person" field, I'm not entirely
sure whose name to fill in.

I know that in the US censuses from 1840 on back, I can only use the head
of household name. Am I correct in continuing to use that for 1850
forward? Or should I be using the name of the person for whom I am
recording the event? I'm thinking mainly of the cases where an ancestor
works in the household of someone to whom they are not related.

What is the SOP?

[LegacyUG] Source File ID - Preventing Printing

2008-12-28 Thread Lawrence S. Hofrichter
I have been following a filing recommendation made many years ago by William
Dollarhide in Managing a Genealogical Project:  Each source document (including
copies, notes, transcripts, photos, etc.) is assigned a ID for filing:
SURNAME  STATE  .  I've been inserting those identification numbers in my
Legacy Master Sources or Source Details as the File ID.

Is there any way to prevent those File ID numbers from printing -- when I print
citations or source reports?  They are irrelevant to the reader, since they
merely serve to advise me where I have filed a copy of the source material.

Thanks.

Not all USB Drives have the lock-out switch. If it does, it is usually a small slide switch on the

I use the flash drive (updated when we are ready to leave home)
to take my data back and forth to my daughter's house but also
have my data backed up on a portable hard drive (weekly), send a
zipped file to myself on g-mail (monthly) and a partitioned 2nd
drive on the computer (at the same I save the daily work). Maybe
a little overkill here but don't want to lose my data. Oh yes,
about every 6 months I make a CD and take it to my friends house
down the street.

Flash drives usually have a little slide switch that will lock the flash drive for editing, to
protect data. If you have it in the locked position I don't believe you would be able to open the
file because Legacy must be able to write to the file.

Re: [LegacyUG] Error opening database------could not lock file

2008-12-28 Thread jmglover
Hello Dennis,
Yes, I did copy it to the hard drive, and it works perfectly there,
jut wont open from the flash drive. I'll copy it from the hard drive to the
flash later this evening, and see if it works then.
   Thanks for replying,
Cheers,
Jill

Helo Mary,
I've had a couple of 'crashes' also, and lost several weeks worth of
research, it's a sinking feeling, and maddening.
  Thanks for your advice.
Cheers,
Jill

Wynthner,
I do back up to the hard drive and CD, but also use the flash for
everyday opening the file. It's the habit I've got into, I suppose.
It's just that I can't open the fdb. file at the moment, from the
flash drive, and hoped for some help/clues as to what to do.
Cheers,
Jill
