RE: [LegacyUG] Export to GED, Import Ged back to Legacy. Drawbacks?

2009-04-24 Thread ronald ferguson

Richard,

I realised shortly after I had replied that that was probably the reason for
you wishing to roll back.

It is something which, like you, I would be loathe to do, especially since it
means going the Gedcom route. I'm afraid that I have always had doubts about
the abililty of Gedcoms to accurately transfer all the data - but no real proof.

On my laptop I have another, lightweight, genealogy program onto which I
transfer my data using a Gedcom, whenever I am going away, and I know that the
transfer is incomplete, especially with respect to sources. OK, this is
probably due to the other program, and Legacy to Legacy will be much more
accurate, but...??

You could put your data file on a flash drive but you would have to find
a computer with Legacy already installed to be able to access the file.
If there is an LDS Family History Center in the area you could contact
them to see if they have Legacy installed on their computers. We provide
free copies to Family History Centers but not all of them have taken us
up on the offer.

Some memory sticks here, come with U3 software pre-installed on them.
Although I don't use it, the software is supposed to be able let you put
an installation package on the stick that will be installed on which
ever machine you plug the stick into.

Not quite the same as a truly portable application that can run from the
stick, but a useful adjunct provided that you remember to remove the
installed software once you leave the macine.

Sorry Mike but U3 only works with what are called Portable Apps they only work
directly of the memory stick and don't put anything on the host computer.

Gayle,

If all you need is to have your Legacy data available for referance
use GRAMPS Portable at http://portableapps.com/node/18728 .

Install GRAMPS on a USB drive then export Legacy file to GEDCOM and
import into GRAMPS. I have done this without a problem.

I  do not recomend making changes in Gramps then try to merge back to
Legacy but at least you should have your data as reference.
Also GRAMPS is by no means a replacement for Legacy just a way of
making the data portable.

Portable Gramps is for the portable apps suite of applications that run on

You might consider using Legacy to create one or more websites with all your
information. You could upload the site to the Internet and access it from any
computer that has a browser. Rootsweb has free accounts if you don't have your
own site somewhere else. Or you could put the folder of website files on a
USB flash drive and access that from a browser on any computer with a USB port.

I find it useful to make and save several websites of different types
(ancestor, descendant, etc), starting with different people. Depending on the
type of research you are doing, one or another of these sites will be more
convenient to use. At the top level of Legacy, click the Internet tab, then
click "Create Web Pages" and follow the instructions. The built-in Help
document is indeed helpful.

You wouldn't be able to add to or change your information. But at least you
could view it all, and make notes for entry into Legacy when you get back home.

Actually all of the portable apps will run as standalone program. They
can even be run from your computer's hard drive, although that defeats
the purpose of a portable app. I just like the convenience of using the
Portable apps interface because of the convenience of starting any of
the programs I have loaded. Also, I have contacted Mojo Pac about
getting Legacy to run with their program. That would be even better!

were in chronological order. If I start with baptism name and source
it, then as a 5 yr old in census the second entry goes on top. I would
really like to see a date for each AKA AND the Up/Down arrow to
manually shift position to see how a name evolves with time.

It looks like they could be re-ordered from Access tblNX on an
individual basis but you would first need to check each source date to
determine preferred order.

Does anyone else agreethis would be a valuable enhancement?

If I were starting over I would abandon AKAs all together and just put
this kind of info in Event/Fact. You can order them, assign dates, make
them private, categorize them (misspelling, transcription error,
nickname, legal name change, etc.), customize the report sentence ...
all the things you can't do with an AKA.

RE: [LegacyUG] Sorting AKAs

2009-04-24 Thread CE Wood
One of the main reasons I switched to Legacy many years ago was the facility
of its AKAs. The majority of my entries have multiple names, mostly titles
by which they were known. It is invaluable that I can list all of these
names and find each one almost as easily as main surname. I wish they were
also included when adding parents.

When researching old records, Visitations, genealogies and the like, any one
of many names may be used. It is of incalculable value to be able to go to
my Index and find the person whom I list as Humphrey de /Bohun/, 2nd Earl of
Essex, but who is referred to in research as Humphrey de Bohun, 2nd Earl of
/Hereford/, or as Humphrey de Bohun, 1st Earl of /Essex/, and several more.

It is also invaluable in creating a list of successive lords, dukes, kings,
or whatever, because I can use the place as a surname also (as above).

With more recent ancestors, name changes were not always successive,
especially because there was no spelling consistency in English until the
OED in the late 1880s. Just read some early American wills if you haven't
already. And that's just English! When dealing with foreign names, it is
marvelous to be able to use Wilhelm, Willem, Guillaume, and William, for
example, as well as the mangled English attempts at reproducing foreign
surnames.

Yes, sometimes, such as when the US Immigration officials decided that my
brother-in-law's first name was not a real name, they changed it right there
on Ellis Island, it is nice to be able to date the change.

Census takers were challenged by the accents of their interviewees and their
own lack of knowledge how to spell foreign names. That a name was different
on a census was usually a result of such rather than a true name change. My
Quin relatives were sometimes correctly listed as Quin, but too often as
Quinn, because that's the way the census taker thought it was spelled.
There never was any actual name change.

Re: [LegacyUG] Export to GED, Import Ged back to Legacy. Drawbacks?

2009-04-24 Thread Mary Young
Hi Dennis
I wonder whether my Thread "Exporting to a New Family File" has any
relevance in Richard's situation. He is considering Exporting to
Gedcom in order to roll back to an earlier version of 7, whereas I was
Exporting to a New _Legacy_ Family File.

The first time I asked was in L5, I don't think reordering using Access because
it willl just re-alphabetize the names anyway.

Found a person totally unlinked to anybody. Tried to link him to who I
thought was his brother and got message "he's already part of this family"
same with the brother--no parents showing.
