Yes I should have said uninstalledand not deleted.

It was definitely a problem with Firefox as I uploaded the gedcom fine using IE

I'm dubious.  I really don't think it has anything to do with Legacy.

Problem solved I would appear to have been firefox that was the

Yes, I would definitely have suggested you try IE because one of the

I have found it necessary to use Ancestry with Firefox's IE Tab because

[LegacyUG] Printing Master Source List Names

2009-08-07 Thread Connie Sheets

Is there any way to print out a list of Master Source Names (with or without
the full source citation)? I need to clean up/standardize how I have named my
sources and having a piece of paper to look at would be nice, rather than
having to do it all onscreen, but I'm stumped.

I have the Source Citation Report Include Tab set to print only the Master
Sources, _and_ I have the OptionsCustomizeSources set to Include Source List
Name as part of source citation, but all I see on the Print Preview screen is
the full source citation; no Master Source Name.

Standard question: Am I missing something, or is it not possible?

Thanks in advance!

Re: [LegacyUG] Printing Master Source List Names

2009-08-07 Thread Patricia WENZEL
Connie,
I think I've found a way to print the list you want.

I tried to print out the Master Source List by first going to
Reports/Source Citation Listing and did not get exactly what I wanted.
But the following worked for me.

Go to View/Master Lists/Source.  Once there, click on Options (on the right
hand side of the screen) and choose Print.  This will take you to the same
Master Source Report.  Click on All Sources (at the top) and Only Master Source
(toward the bottom).  This should print  the name as shown in the Master Source
List.

[LegacyUG] Italics Coding Printing in Source List and Gedcom (was Printing Master Source List Names)

2009-08-07 Thread Connie Sheets

Now I have my Master Source List, but I noticed that the portion of the
citations that are italicized are printing with the italics coding in the List
style format.

More importantly, when I create a gedcom, and open it in another program, my
sources all have the italics coding hard wired, i..e.:

\i Ancestry.com\i0

is what prints on List style format on a Source Citation Report, and is what
gets rendered onscreen after creating a gedcom in Legacy and importing into
another program.

Is there a way to fix this short of search/replace in the entire gedcom? This
looks to me like a bug that should be reported?

(I'm not certain this is happening with my older Basic Style sources; it is
definitely happening with my Sourcewriter sources).

RE: [LegacyUG] Gedcom problem uploading to Ancestry

2009-08-07 Thread Valerie Laskowski
You may encounter future problems uploading with any browsers. There have
been security updates to both Firefox and IE and other browsers. You may
want update your Firefox to at least the 3.0.13 version. Now IE 8.0 has
many problems with rendering grouped objects and other graphics; hence, I
would stick with a 7.x version of IE until Microsoft can work out their bugs
-- and the bugs in their recent bug fix; which destroyed many peoples web
pages they designed on their own computer.

Anyway, all of these security updates are checking for certificates. You
will have to check on making Ancestry a trusted site or other workarounds
if it's a certificate issue. The warning pop-ups display and then
disappear very fast. I would have all other windows minimized and then drag
the window with Ancestry.com to the lower half of the page right before you
submit the upload. This way, you can see the windows error windows
pop-up. Sometimes they are hidden behind your browser screen and the
status bar does not contain anything for them.

Is this the database that is used? If so, then how to use it to update and
are the updates worth the time and effort?

RE: [LegacyUG] Gedcom problem uploading to Ancestry

2009-08-07 Thread ronald ferguson

Valerie,

As someone who tests web pages in Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Bing, Safari, IE6,
IE7, and IE8 I would be grateful if you could identify the source for these
revelations, which are totally new to me.

I agree that there are some problems with IE8 but not the ones which you
identify. I have not known a browser to, nor can I see how a browser can,
destroy a web page. I would add that the only pages which do not present
correctly in IE8 are those which are either, a) badly written eg. think it's
still IE6, or b) use propriety coding. IE8 is the most standards compliant
browser which MS has produced, although it still contains one or two of the
well known, and easily avoidable, MS quirks.

I still prefer Firefox for writing web pages, though. I would add that not only
do I write my own coding, but I also use some of the Legacy codings as well and
I have yet to have them destroyed by IE8.

I have found it necessary to use Ancestry with Firefox's IE Tab because

In response to Ron's comment that the geo-code database has never been

I have been using (the updates) for several years, and I have NO affiliation

If you would rather I simply state the name of the company and let listers

2009-08-07 Thread Valerie Laskowski
Ron,

There are over 10,000 postings on the web if you just Google them; pick
any one. This has been going on since February of this year. I know, I've
been paid well for my support time. Microsoft's own Publisher Software,
that many users utilize to create simple websites, is one of the main
problems. Any grouped objects and many images do not render in the new
IE8. Microsoft released a Service Pack 2 for the Office product; which in
turn made them unable to open their files and in some cases severly
corrupted the files. According to the Microsoft Support website, they are
working on another emergency fix.

While you may be someone well versed in web page design, a lot of
individuals that are less experienced rely on packages like MS Publisher and
other easy publishing tools to help them for their non profit organizations,
church groups, etc.. because they don't have a lot of money to spend on a
professional. One would think that the web pages would most likely not work
in any other browser other than Internet Explorer 8.0; since it's from the
same company. BUT NO -- MS tricked us again. These websites work in EVERY
browser other than Microsoft's. How's that for irony.

RE: [LegacyUG] Gedcom problem uploading to Ancestry

2009-08-07 Thread ronald ferguson

Valerie,

After reading your posting I did Google, and did not find one reference to IE8
damaging Web pages. Having now read your latest it would seem that the problem
is not with IE8 but with either Office or the interface between Office and IE8.
It is quite possible that MS did not upgrade their Office products to comply
with the web standards now (largely) used by IE8.

I have not tried grouped objects in IE8, but if you are referring to eg.
grouped sprites similar to those used by Amazon, Apple and You Tube mainly for
navbars, then again it must be the code generator which is causing the problem,
otherwise those websites would not be usable in 75% of the browsers used today.

This is really off topic and I only raised the question because I did not wish
for those Legacy users who generate their pages using Legacy to have concerns
about having IE8 and their web pages on the same machine, when there is not a
problem in doing so.

[LegacyUG] Spam

2009-08-07 Thread Phil Hawkins
I Apologise profusely to FEEDBITZ for my error I should have written
FEEDBLIZ
The text of the email is below. There are numerous attempts to harvest your
email address and in my haste to warn Legacy users about the spam I failed
to read my post correctly. (Why the closeness to the spelling of FeedBitz, I
wonder??)

Again, my apologies
Phil

No problem and I am sure you had the best intentions. I was
re-reading it trying to see if we got the same email, and I almost
decided we didn't. This email strikes me a little bit different
though. The way I am taking it is they are announcing Legacy News,
and if we want to continue to get it, please make sure out email
filters will allow it in. Thanks.

FeedBlitz (www.feedblitz.com) does manage our LegacyNews mailing list. We've
developed a great relationship with them over the past couple of years and
have a great respect for their company. Others, such as Dick Eastman's
eogn.com and DearMyrtle also use FeedBlitz.

Thanks,

Subject: [LegacyUG] Spam from 'Legacy'

I received an email today from FeedBitz alleging they are handling Legacy
news distribution.
They are known spammers and the moment you reply, unsubscribe, complain or
'confirm' your email address they have you for life.
I sent a message to Legacy about it and am sending this to all on the group
in the hope that none of you will fall for it regards

I think I'll go back to bed and wake up again, This is not a dream but a
nightmare!!
Act in haste - repent in leisure!
I sit here red-faced and embarrassed. In my defence I can only state I was
trying to be helpful, but it seems I've assailed the character and
reputation of two companies.
I APOLOGISE!!
My mail filtering program has the sender of the email listed as 'known spam'
and 'blacklisted'
Why, I don't know. I'll have to go through my filter lists and see what
happened.

To all who panicked because I did, I'm sorry. I'll keep my big
mouth/keyboard shut from now on

(Crawling back under the rock I came out from!!)

Phil
