Why would you want to? I have tried to come up with some numbering system
using just the 1, 2, 3, . . . numbers that would logically work with
parents, children, aunts, nephews, spouses and parents of spouses, etc., and
get some sort of order to the numbers. It doesn't take very many numbers
before chaos begins to set in.

You might want to select number one, then either go to parents or children
or siblings for the next few, but then where? Changing those few by hand is
doable, but after that a person is just a number, and the machine can supply
that number just as logically as I can.

1 In the family screen can I show place of birth and/or place of death

If you go to Options > Customise > General > Popup Information Boxes, you
can check Popup Automatically and then click Save. Then when you hover over
the children or parents in Family View these details will come up.

2 In the Descendant Charts can I do a left to right rather than top to

No, not at present Although I think that it has been submitted as a request

Speaking of putting things on Ancestry.com, I was wondering what
people's thoughts are. I personally don't want my info accessible to
everyone in the world...at any point in the future. I just want it
available to authentic relatives. There are ways to get the word out
and then word offline with people. That's what I've done so far.
However, I would like to her other opinions. I was just elected
Family Historian for my mother-in-law's side of the family so I know
that within the next year a family policy or something will come up
among those I will be working with. My predecessor didn't have a
cooperative working relationship in the way that I want to. Your
thoughts are much appreciated.

Well for a start I "do my research" all over the place using

From personal experience, be sure that that is what you do want to
do - i.e.., change the RIN/MRIN numbering, expecially if you have
personal File ID numbers associated with to your research papers
based on these numbers.

I have been working for the past month or so trying to get my
records straightened out because I did not observe the 'renumber
RIN& MRIN' check box and to my great chagrin renumbering took place
unbeknownst to me. The result - all my hundreds of hard copy files
backing up my digital files, based on a MRIN numbering system,
changed and I didn 't catch it for about a month. In retrospect, I
should have used only Master Sources instead of Detailed File ID's,
but that ship has sailed. So, I have been laboriously working my
way through 20,000 names to get back to some semblance of order.
Right now I'm wading my way through a 60 page File ID report to
identify those numbers that I need to correct. So far, I am about
80-% recoved, but learned a valuable lesson. I had 3 backups of
my .fdb files, unfortunately, these backups contained the wrong
information before I discovered it.

The end result - watch the little boxes when you change anything -
they can have far reaching effects - you know 'the law of
unintended consequences' is always alive and waiting. :-)

Re: [LegacyUG] Changing RINs and MRINs in 7.0 deluxe

2009-08-29 Thread Kramer
Ron, the RINs got messed up because I was tinkering to see if I really
had to do them all by hand which is what was suggested to me before. I
was the #1 person on my mother-in-law's side and now I was elected the
Family Historian. Some day someone else will take over my paperwork
just like I inherited boxes of info from my predecessor who passed
away recently. I want to make sure that the lead ancestor in each
line (family is so large it goes from A-V with thousands in each line)
instead of me or someone else. I already imported my Legacy Deluxe 6.0
into 7.0 hoping that it would give me the prompt at that point. I
browsed through something in the help that made me think that I could
do it in 7.0. I did try the Check Repair and now I am #709 but my
mother is #5. She's not related. Is there a way to renumber all RINs
and/or MRINs that anyone knows of? I want to do it before I begin
using the File Your Papers numbering system too.

RE: [LegacyUG] Cursor, Split View, Stumped!

2009-08-29 Thread MJ Harper

Ron,

yes, I checked that. The jumping around occurred whether the window
was selected or not. And the jumps were quite often extreme, bearing
no relation that I could determine from where the cursor started nor
from where the cursor was intended to end up. I'm sorry, though
comforted, to hear that Jenny has had some of these issues, also.

I've worked with it just a little today. There is a jump when a line
is selected, but only a burp of a jump, with the cursor then ending
up on the intended line. I've never noticed this before, but it
could have been happening without penetrating my awareness.

Yesterday, closing the files, closing the program, rebooting the
system, changing the mice, nothing seemed to help. On booting up
today, so far so good. Hope it stays that way.

Hi Gary

Good thoughts there, Gary. I have heard comments before from several
different people that Adobe does try to 'take over' one's computer & is

for opening PDFs. Legacy ITSELF is not a PDF reader. You want the reader
program to be the default, then Legacy invokes the default program.

Hi Jim

Right clicking on a pdf file gives a menu from which I choose Open Default
Program. I had to browse to select "Legacy Genealogy Software
for Windows" as the default opening program. The pdf still does not
open; actually it doesn't open at all as Legacy Genealogy Software for
Windows is the default and not longer Adobe!

I'm sure I don't understand exactly what you're telling me, Jim.

Jim,

I'm not sure what you are saying either. If I try to open a PDF file using
Legacy, then Legacy starts up but displays an error message saying that
the file extension is wrong and should be a .FDB file. I don't see what
this experiment has to do with invoking Adobe Reader (or any PDF reader)
from the appropriate window within a running Legacy session.

Tom,

When you select 'Choose Program' the programs list opens. You should have
uncheck the box for 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of
file.' By doing that you would not have removed Adobe Reader as the
default

program and would have Legacy as an alternative program.

You can reset Adobe to be the default program by going back into the
program

list.

2009-08-29 Thread ronald ferguson

Michele,

I don't think you really want to get rid of the Cs etc as they are the actual
links to pages referred to by the letters, in other words the index.

The key is given on the first index page (unknown surname) and is:

Key: S=as a Spouse, C=as a Child, P=as a Parent

When I'm feeling particularly keen I actually copy this to the top of every
index page, but more often than I don't!

Yes, they are in the same folder, just have different names. And I was
able to rename all the pictures in picture center without loosing any
(which was not true before). I am also not a fan of picture center. A

Michele,

This is very much a matter of personal preference, mine being for Pedigree
pages, although these are bigger. On my site for the n.w. of England Fergusons
I use the Family Group style.

I suggest that you try each of the options out using a small family group, say
2 or 3 generations, and tagging the direct line + siblings and using the tagged
ones only.

RE: [LegacyUG] as web site question

2009-08-29 Thread ronald ferguson

Michele,

I was going to suggest that you compress your pages, there is free software
which can do this for you and I will come back to you on this if you wish.

However, I see that you are including the whole of your surname index in the
meta tags. Whilst I have read of some people recommending this it really isn't
necessary as the only purpose is for the benefit of the Search Engines and they
read every page anyhow, in fact you are more likely to confuse those who are
searching.

If you work out the memory usage of doing this as follows: Let us say that on
average each name takes 15bytes, and you have 617 unique surnames and 37pages,
you will see that you are taking up 15x617x37=342KB.

My web server has a max of 20MB. My file is already at 17.2. I have a
relatively small file as genealogy files go (about 5500 people). Is there
some way to reduce the size of the file? I generated the web pages using
the "individual pages" option. Does that matter?

Michele,

Yes you can and there are various ways of doing this, but you can only delay
having to find a new host for so long. Genealogy sites are by their nature big
beasts!

To best advise you please can you post the url of the site so I can have a look.

Re: [LegacyUG] Off Topic - Life After Posting to Ancestry.com

2009-08-29 Thread Marilyn Clark
I guess it *is* an advertising hook for Ancestry non-members, but I have a
membership in Ancestry (US only) and those annoying hints can sometimes be
helpful, too. I connected with another relative who has a lovely
well-documented tree with many photos out there on Ancestry, because I clicked
on a promising hint.

I doubt that I would have researched all the trees on Ancestry, looking for a
match, on my own. At least not right now, maybe later on in my research.

Quoting the OP to get this thread back on-topic:

"My question is once you put your data on ancestry, do you do your research
there or do you continue with Legacy? I'm more comfortable with Legacy but it
means when I find something, I have to enter it in Legacy and again in
ancestry. How do other do this?"

I am both a new Legacy user and new Ancestry member. I did put my Legacy db out
there on Ancestry -- I do lots of my research thru Ancestry, and I use the
'shoebox' feature on Ancestry to save possible research paths as well as
documents I want to print and examine later on. To avoid double-entry, I enter
all my new, documented finds *only* on my Legacy database. I let the Ancestry
one slide. The features there are cool, but I want my up-to-the-minute "good
stuff" on my own PC, in Legacy.

I did consider simply uploading a new Legacy GEDCOM to Ancestry periodically,
in order to keep the Ancestry file updated, but if you have attached photos or
links to sources on the Ancestry file, they will be lost if you replace your
original file. That's why there are so many seemingly-duplicated family trees
on Ancestry. People keep uploading newer GEDCOMS and don't delete their older
files.

The real downer for me is when I see a really good hint and it turns out to be
pointing to my OWN tree!

Marilyn

RE: [LegacyUG] Off Topic - Life After Posting to Ancestry.com

2009-08-29 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Jim:

I would absolutely stick with Legacy as my primary program. I periodically
upload a revised GEDCOM to RootsWeb (which then also appears at Ancestry)
but I'd never enter data directly to a database at Ancestry. Instead, I
copy the reliable information (usually original images or record
transcriptions), enter it into Legacy with the formatting and sourcing that
I want, and it gets uploaded with my next GEDCOM revision.

IMO, Ancestry is leading its subscribers down the path to building yet more
garbage trees online with mindless research-free clicking.

Re: [LegacyUG] Picture Gallery default?

2009-08-29 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
Your question caused me to discover this whole 'hidden' part. By searching
around, I found my 'individual tab' had a * and 26 photos. Next I moved to
'all pictures' which showed 31 photos and a *. With furthur exploring found
that all the tabs seemed to be tied to my Events, and since I have about 10
residences, half with no photo attached, the pattern was discovered. I just
switched to one of my 'private' tabs, then turned off Legacy and rebooted
Legacy. When I went to my Gallery it had reset itself to Individual. IMHO, the
program should default to 'All pictures' if anything. This is something that
happened with the new update, since in the recent past, when I went in that
gallery, I never noticed less than the 31.
This is a 'bug?' from the most recent update 7.0.0.107, 20 Aug 2009.

Re: [LegacyUG] Default location for photos

2009-08-29 Thread Leon Chapman
I agree you store you files and pictures anywhere on your hard drive
or thumb drive. Conceptually you could store each picture in a
different location and as long as you assign or point to the picture
location, Legacy will be happy.

The issue is what happens when you move to another computer - you will
need to replicate and/or point to the location of each picture file.
The other issue is backing up your files - you will have to back up/
copy each file from each location.

If you only have a few pictures, then everything is easy. In my case,
I have several thousands of pictures - I want to keep it simple. Try
moving your files to another location, e.g., c/legacy6/ to d:/legacy7/
and move your pictures to drive D. This is where simplicity pays off -
same for backups.

Bottom line, if you like complexity, go for it. In my experiences,
the KISS principle works much better.

Well for a start I "do my research" all over the place using Ancestry,
numerous other websites and all sorts places and people and use Legacy
to record my findings! I will always do that.

It's been a while since I uploaded anything to Ancestry (1), but I will
get around to uploading more regularly one day. What I *won't* do is
upload everything in my file (definitely not pictures and probably not
Events, definitely not Research Notes) and nor will I change anything
from within Ancestry. Basically, I will have a "tree" on Ancestry and
from time to time I will exchange it for a newer one as I have added a
few more names.

(1) For "Ancestry" you could substitute "Genes Reunited" or any other
similar site.

I, too have pictures in two quite distinct places - I have photographs
of people and places and so in sub-folders within C:\Legacy\Pictures and
I have Census images, scans of certificates, information copies from web
pages, etc, which are all attached to Sources stored in numerous folders
and sub-folders within C:\genes.

I see that at the moment I don't have anything in C:\Legacy\Docs which
is slightly odd because I thought I had put some files in there! I have
no doubt I will use that folder in the future.

As for naming of pictures and documents, which is mentioned elsewhere,
this is something I wish I'd given a lot more thought to when I first
started! I am gradually changing filenames to more sensible and
easily-findable ones. Photos of individuals are "Surname, forenames
RIN" with some further identifier as required, such as "Paul, Eileen
Margaret 203 aged 6" or "Bloor, William Henry 166 in Investiture
uniform". Pictures of a wedding couple are "groom surname, groom
forenames RIN = bride surname, bride forenames RIN". Pictures of
headstones, memorials etc are all together in a Graves folder, so each
file is named "Gravestone - surname, forenames RIN" or "Memorial -
surname, forenames RIN."

This is still very much a work in progress! One thing I have found
useful is having a set of "index pages" for all my group photos. On an
A4 sheet I print a copy of the picture and underneath the names of all
the people depicted, along with their UserID (which is an identifier
plus RIN, eg B7.149) working from left to right and in rows from top to
bottom. I title each page with a simple identifier such as "Horatio,
Gertrude and their Children" or "Henry & Margaret Silver Wedding 1900"
and in the header I print the full path and filename of the electronic
version of that photograph.

Jim,

Legacy is my main place for entering all updates or corrections to my
database. However, I then upload a copy of my family tree via
GEDCOM to Rootsweb which is a subsidiary of Ancestry.com. Rootsweb's
URL is: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/

My tree will then also show up on Ancestry under their Family
Trees--> Ancestry World Tree. Their hints will also show up and I
can use them or ignore them as I wish.

I prefer to have my tree on Rootsweb because it allows my tree to be
seen by a larger audience then just that of Ancestry's paid
subscription web site. And I like the idea of placing my tree on
Rootsweb where it is free and anyone can access it.

There has been a firestorm in many forums about this as it is nothing more
than blatant advertising. When you click on the "Hint" you are taken to a
page that gives very little information about the particular hint and
further clicking on any of the suggested hints will take you to a page
inviting you to subscribe to Ancestry.com if you have not already. If you
are not a subscriber, you are not allowed to see any specific information
about the hint.

There is nothing you can do about this, after all it is their server that
you are using. Just learn to ignore it.

Joan,

To confirm, when you say you have ticked the box, I take it that you mean right
click on Kids' names then View>show 1/2 Kids.

I can only suggest trying File>File Maintenance>Check Repair

Re: [LegacyUG] Changing RINs and MRINs in 7.0 deluxe

2009-08-29 Thread Bert van Kootwijk
Why not using Customer ID's, they never change, unless you do that yourself.
Remember, RIN's and MRIN's are numbers created by Legacy in record input
order. They are meaning nothing, but are only nescessary for linking records
within the program.

From personal experience, be sure that that is what you do want to do -
i.e.., change the RIN/MRIN numbering, expecially if you have personal File
ID numbers associated with to your research papers based on these numbers.

I have been working for the past month or so trying to get my records
straightened out because I did not observe the 'renumber RIN& MRIN' check
box and to my great chagrin renumbering took place unbeknownst to me. The
result - all my hundreds of hard copy files backing up my digital files,
based on a MRIN numbering system, changed and I didn 't catch it for about
a month. In retrospect, I should have used only Master Sources instead of
Detailed File ID's, but that ship has sailed. So, I have been laboriously
working my way through 20,000 names to get back to some semblance of
order. Right now I'm wading my way through a 60 page File ID report to
identify those numbers that I need to correct. So far, I am about 80-%
recoved, but learned a valuable lesson. I had 3 backups of my .fdb files,
unfortunately, these backups contained the wrong information before I
discovered it.

The end result - watch the little boxes when you change anything - they
can have far reaching effects - you know 'the law of unintended
consequences' is always alive and waiting. :-)

Does anyone know how to change all of the RINs and MRINs in some easy
manner for over 3100 names in 7.0 deluxe? I have several people as #1

RE: [LegacyUG] Cursor, Split View, Stumped!

2009-08-29 Thread ronald ferguson

I believe it happens because you have to put the screen you wish to use in
focus before you start to make changes, ie. the first click just puts it in
focus or specifies that this is the sceen you wish to use.

This is a feature of Windows.

Well, I can't offer you an explanation of *why* this happens - although

[LegacyUG] And Now ...

2009-08-29 Thread MJ Harper

So now I'm in database A, index view. I see that there are three
James Bakers, three RIN numbers. Two James have different
parents. The third James has no parents listed. I click on Family
view for that third James. The family view that comes up is Irma
Baker, who I've just deleted as one of two of that name, different
RIN's, no parents, no relationships on the Irma I've deleted. But
she's still there and comes up in Family view when I click on family
view for the third James I see in list view.

Also, in list view, I'm up on the Bakers, and click one notch down on
the scroll bar. Instead of going to the Crawford's, for instance, it
goes to the Whites. With just the littlest click.

Is this hardware? Legacy itself? What do I do to get these

In particular, I suggest you find out all about how Sources are

[LegacyUG] Cursor, Split View, Stumped!

2009-08-29 Thread MJ Harper

Ok, I have split view showing. On the right side is New Creation
B. On the left side is New Creation A. I'm checking each against
each to clean up old misbegotten merges and moves. So far so good,
*Except* ...

In list view: I click on Harry X. on list B. I click on Harry X. on
list A. The cursor jumps to Irma X., or maybe John Y, or maybe Mary
A. ... ??? ...

Happens on either list. It jumps from the name I've chosen to some
other name, a long way down, right next door or somewhere up. It
happens over and over again, each time to a different place, however
careful I've been to gently click, to firmly click, to be sure I'm
not inadvertently pressing the back button, or the forward button, or
the scroll. It happens sometimes on list A or sometimes on list B,
or back to back. Then wherever it goes, I have to scroll back to
where I want to be. But as often as not, when clicking on the
desired name again, it jumps all over again back to the name it
jumped to the first time, or somewhere else entirely. I'm so frustrated!

Also, when I've asked, on list B, to delete Mary Ellen Harris, and
double check that that's the one that comes up in verifying the
delete, when I actually click delete Mary Ellen Harris disappears,
but many times now, also the person below her. Gone, just simply
gone. I'm not deleting from list A, only from list B. And I'm not
about to try list A, not wanting to risk the foundational database.

I've tested with three different mice. Happened with each one. I've
slowed the double click time to next to nothing. I've treble-checked
everything I can think of, and just cannot gain control over where
the cursor goes! What in the dickens is going on?!

Thanks for any ideas!
