RE: [LegacyUG] one file or many?

2008-12-21 Thread Byron Schafbuch

The differences of opinions you will find will depend mainly on what you
expect your end results to be and for how you work. Be it printed format,
web pages, mapping, etc.

With a tool such as Legacy, for me, I maintain one database of about 14,000
for all my work. I really like it ability for making most my web site for
me in which I am able to generate individual sub-sites for a number of the
family lines that I research, besides generating an ALL-inclusive output for
everyone I have in my database. For me having the variety of outputs has
allowed my to have contact with many others who have found connections with
my data, and been able to assist me with some of those 'brick walls'
occasionally. And again, with Legacy I can quickly customize and generate a
wide variety of reports specifically geared for people very easily, which
makes them very happy and more willing to add further help later on.

Having all in one database also lets you shift back and forth between
research as needed with just a few clicks. Also maintenance, upgrades, and
backups are much more easily handled.

To each his own as he sees fit.

RE: [LegacyUG] Trying to move Legacy from C drive to new E drive

2008-10-14 Thread Byron Schafbuch
Hello Joan

2 Queries. First, in the optionscustomizelocations tab, you have also
changed the default media locations also to point to E:\...??

Next-With the view current list of multimedia locations tab, does it still
list your OLD locations? If so, you will need to merge your -OLD- locations
over to the -NEW- locations. As such:

1-you would highlight the OLD location,(ie. C:\pics\family-1)

2-then hit the button on the bottom labeled:
combine the highlighted path with another one in the list,
This button will change to highlight destination then click this button.

3-now highlight the NEW location, (ie. E:\pics\family-1) then hit the
highlight destination.. button.

The will change the -OLD- paths in the database over to the -NEW- paths for
all those media
files that were in the OLD location, over to the NEW location. (ie
C:\pics\...
will now be changed to E:\pics...)

You would need to repeat for each -OLD- path existing..

Thanks for the replies all. Just to clarify, I did move Legacy
to my E:\ drive, and reset all the paths to point to E:\ using
Options Customize Locations. Legacy runs fine off the
external USB drive, and all records and links between them
seem to work fine.

Where I am stuck in this project is with multimedia
attachments. I have numerous scans that I also copied over to
E:\, and I set up paths to the new E:\ folders using the
Options Customize Locations View Current LIst Of
Multimedia Locations.

Problem is, the records with multimedia attachments (like
.jpg) can't find the images on E:\. I think Legacy is still
looking for them on C:\.

A Previous poster indicated I will have to manually
re-attach these images, I think I agree that is the case. I
was hoping there would be a simpler way to do this, as I have
dozens of these attached muiltimedia files.

Thanks again!

 Then my
desktop crashed so I installed v.7 on my laptop, did some
work with it
and backed up the entire directory to an external

point my desktop decided to grace me with a restart so I copied the

That's when I noticed the Legacy Charting folder in Windows

right smack in the middle of the Legacy 7 directory. It was
not there previously.
Now, having paid at least somewhat attention to the Legacy Charting
threads I know I heard Ken say it's better to uninstall your first
version of Legacy Charting after you install v.7. So I
looked around
for another folder called Legacy Charting and found it under Program
Files\Legacy Charting. I opened it, clicked the uninstall
button and
it uninstalled. I deleted the bits that were left over,
opened Legacy
7 and clicked on Charting. A message popped up - You do not have
Legacy Charting installed and therefore cannot open it.
Huh? Somehow
I've gone from having possibly 2 versions of Charting on my
desktop to
having none. It also tells me to reinstall Legacy
7 to get the charting back. I did that (twice) and it still says I
don't have Legacy Charting. Next question: how much do I care?
 Well, quite a bit.

2008-01-05 Thread Byron Schafbuch
Ron, you were almost there.

Goto SearchFindDetailed Search

Look for whom = Individual
Where to look: = Added Date
How to look: = After OR Equal to (your choice depending on timing)
What to look for: = Date (of import)

Then Create List

When the search list pops up, go to OptionsAdvanced deleting, from there

you can select the button for delete all individuals from search list -
which would delete all who were imported on that date-

Initial search list can be tempered by 2nd or 3rd search terms as time of
import, etc.

Valerie,

That certainly makes life easier. I do not think that it would
be a good idea to start untagging the tags I will suggest but
you can if you wish. Personally I would get rid of all the
Colludens and import as you wished to do initially.

Step 1 *Make a back up!*

Go to: SearchFindDetailed Search

Look for whom: Individual
Where to Look: Surname
How to look: Equal to
What to look for: Culloden

Create then:

OptionsAdvanced Tagging and select Everyone in the Search
List Select
Optionsan unused tag (say 1) and click OK

Go to ToolsAdvanced Deleting

enter the Tag number used (say 1) and Delete - With 800 I
would not bother confirming every deletion :-)

I would now check that there are no Colludens left.

RE: [LegacyUG] Printing a Book

2007-02-12 Thread Byron Schafbuch
Ron

One would think it is a Legacy problem, if 1GB ram and 40gb disk space isn't
enough room to work with. Legacy has had the problem a long time that it
tends/seems to need/hog large amounts of memory. Legacy still has a
problem dealing with memory issues. The purpose of the windows swap file
was to act as virtual memory so to speak, in which a program would be able
to have 'all' the memory it needed, but it does require the program to
manage that memory properly and efficiently, something that Legacy seems to
have a problem with over the last few years. With 3 different computers and
other friends computers, I have seen the same type problem, i.e. limited
number of names - not problem, large amount of names and limited data
reports - usually not a problem, large amount of names and large report
style - **problem**. Has been for several years that I have noticed.

My experience over the years with programming is, with limited memory but
efficient program - it may take a while but program task will be completed,
however, if program is unable to efficiently cope with memory issues, the
program will almost always hang/crash/stall and the task will not be
completed. Unless you artificially 'band-aid' the problem by forcing user
to add memory to his system to compensate for the fact of inefficient
programming under the guise of 'your computer don't have enough memory'
statement.

Just my observation.

RE: [LegacyUG] Printing a Book

2007-02-11 Thread Byron Schafbuch

Hello June

Maybe this will help with what you are looking for:

On the toolbar select reportspublishing center -
First, highlight any previous selection on the right side and remove -
On the left side select individual report then add -
Click on change person in current chapter -
This will bring you to the 'Select a Report' menu with the 'Individual
Report' tab
selected, on the bottom, click on the Record Selection button -
On the Report Record Selection menu, click on the button for All
Individuals in the entire family file -
Close the 'Report Record' menu -
Close the 'Select Report' menu -
Now back at the publishing center, you can also use the Edit setting for
Current Chapter to select options for report formatting -

You can now 'Preview' your report, or print, or generate to file, your
preference.

NOTE: The 'Individual Report' is a 1-page-to-1-person report. i.e. 500+
people means 500+ pages to print.

Also CAUTION: have noticed that Legacy has a definite problem being able to
handle/preview/print/generate LARGE reports. At what level I am not sure,
but legacy 'hangs' generating large reports. I have 2 databases I maintain,
one w/300+, and another w/ 13000+. The small one generates whatever I need,
whenever, however, the LARGE one of 13k+, almost always cause Legacy to hang
making LARGE report, even for preview or to make a file.

Hope this helps

Currently using XP with all latest updates.
