As a matter of fact I do have a reasonably large screen and I do approve of keeping up with technology, but I do not think that at this point in time it is making the best use of Legacy's talents , when there are other problems which have yet to be resolved. RE: [LegacyUG] Pedigree View Enhancement
I have built web sites and they are built to support a 640x480 resolution. In my Pedigree View Enhancement proposal, I'm not suggesting fixing Legacy to 12 generations but rather to allow the number of generations to be scalable, just like the font size and the window size. I'm just asking for more flexibility. I'm not suggesting to force Ron Ferguson to 12 generations but rather allowing you to use anything you might desire from 4 to 6, 8, 10 or 12. Our individual choices. I have Legacy set to scale fronts from 7 to 9. Others may use 10 to 16 or even 18 to 24. Flexibility ... C.G. Agreed about staying in front. I don't agree about the physical size of the screen. It all comes down to resolution: the number of pixels the screen has. A screen is generally constrained by its' graphics card. Mine for example can only go up to 1024*768. A larger screen does not mean that you can bump your resolution. If 1024*768 is the best that your graphics card can do, you'll just have to put up with larger pixels. And that means pixelated images which are more difficult to discern for older eyes. -- Regards, Mike Fry Johannesburg. I think 6 is probably enough though. Having said that, I would make it clear that I am quite happy with the page only showing 4, as at present, so it would not be one of my priorities. I found two possible marriage entries for the couple in Kent, England in 1868 Sep 1868 Medway 2a 619 and Sep 1868 Medway 2a 645 I've just bought both certificates and found that they are definitely the same couple. One marriage was on July 2nd and the other on August 22nd at a different church. Both marriages were by Banns and both described as bachelor/spinster. There's nothing on the certificates to say one was null and void. Never seen anything like this before and so I'm totally confused!! Recently there have been a number of messages to the User Group about emails which are in HTML, and not in plain text. I use Windows Mail. Not being very computer literate, I contacted Legacy support asking how to configure Windows Mail so that my messages would be sent in Plain Text. They politely referred me to Rootsweb. I looked on Rootsweb and found they have a long list of programmes for which they give instructions on how to configure these programmes so that messages are sent in plain text, however Windows Mail is conspicuous by it's absence!. So I emailed Rootsweb, and asked the question. Today, I had a reply which is no help at all. "We do not try to indentify all the possible email methods that subscribers to our mailing lists may use" They have Poco and Juno, but not Windows Mail. There must be someone on the List who also uses Windows Mail. I have used these settings. Windows Mail>Tools>Options>Send Mail Sending Format gives a choice of either HTML or Plain Text; I have checked HTML. News Sending format again gives the choice of HTML or Plain Text, this time I have checked Plain Text. I have also checked the box which says Reply to email messages in the format they were sent. RE: [LegacyUG] Pre-Confederation Quebec/Canadian Place Names

Canada, as we now know it, came into existence on July 1, 1867. Starting on February 10, 1841 until that date, what is now Quebec and Ontario was known as the Province of Canada within British North America; Quebec was known as Canada East and Ontario was known as Canada West but these were not official names. From December 26, 1791 until 1841, Quebec was known as Lower Canada and Ontario as Upper Canada, each a separate province within British North America. So far I have opted to use, for example, Quebec City, Canada East, Province of Canada, British North America for the latter period and Quebec City, Lower Canada, British North America for the former period. However, I am not happy with these - they seem unnecessarily long and cumbersome. Does anybody have a better idea? Ouimet Kingston, ON -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Kris Sent: Saturday, March 22, 2008 14:40 To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Subject: [LegacyUG] A Huge Mess -- Source Citations and Pictures Sorry this is so long -- I have three years invested in about 2000 people and about 600 marriages in my database. I originally just used Master Sources but after learning here about breaking them out, I started from scratch and started using master sources and source detail (except for having to find and fix a typo ten times). I really like that better, but I messed up my paths (long story) and now my census detail citations, for instance, have lost the links to the census images. So if I have used the citation for ten people, I need to go back and find all of them and change the reference to the correct image. I know this is nothing new -- I've been digging through the archives and find that a search/replace can help here, but for most of them there's nothing to search for. For some reason the picture reference is just blank. I must have done something stupid somewhere along the line and they're gone now. I have this problem with pretty much every media item, I've used or cited, though not all the references have disappeared, but the paths are messed up. I did the "Test All Media Paths" thing and had it print out a report, but it's basically useless for me, unless I'm missing something obvious. I have a list of bad paths, but it doesn't tell me where to find it -- for instance, what person or marriage it's supposed to be linked to. I don't find a way to just search for the string unless I'm doing "Search and Replace" which I don't want to do unless I know what I'm replacing. I'm now reading that version 7 will include some great citation improvements and I'm really looking forward to that (among other things). I have such a mess here, I'm really thinking of just starting over again with a clean database, but the thought of all the work that's gone into this one makes my head hurt. I really don't know if it would be easier to try to find and fix all this stuff, or just start from scratch, especially with the new version coming out. Would I have to make a lot of changes in citations then anyway? Thank you for your patience and -- What would you do? In that case... I would have to agree with the desirability of such a feature. However, one needs to remember the purpose of the Index Tab, which is to locate and select a member of the database (and family) for editing. One way might be to create a CSV file from the Name List where dates could be included. You can print from the Name List and include the dates in the report. Just don't include any locations because of the extra commas. Make sure that the report destination goes to a CSV file. That CSV file can then be imported into an Excel spreadsheet (or the OpenOffice.org equivalent) and your sorting criteria used there. I think that would provide a work-around until such time as you can do it from within Legacy. -- Regards, Mike Fry Johannesburg. RE: [LegacyUG] how to record unconnected families - ? Unlinked people
These individuals may at some point been linked and the relationships set (Tools - Set Relationships). Setting Relationships records the relationship of each individual to the individual set as the Starting Individual at the time the tool is run. It doesn't adjust automatically as changes/additions are made to the file. So, it appears these two were once linked, the Set Relationship was run and then later these two were unlinked. Do you recall doing that? What you can do is do "Tools - Set Relarionships - Clear" to remove all Relationships. Then, do "Tools - Set Relarionships - Set" with the correct (your choice) Starting Individual. C.G. RE: [LegacyUG] how to record unconnected families
You can only search (and find) individuals in they file they are in. So, if you place all your unconnected indiduals in a separate file, you will need to open that file to find them. C.G. [LegacyUG] Files: To be Big or To Be Smal
Subject was ... "It is always easier to split out a subgroup from a big file than it is to have to merge files, merge people, sources, etc. to get the subgroup you want." I'll try an example ... My project is the ancestors of my daughter and her four cousins. When I began, I could have created a file for each of the six grandparents. Those six files would have had automatic duplicates, the spouses of those grandparents plus their children and grand-children, thus requiring me to ensure I maintain them carefully. Those files would have had other duplicates as well since there are many common individuals to each of the ancestry paths; more careful maintenance of data. Then someone would want a report or a file of my daughter's ancestors. To do that, I'd have to merge four of the grandparent files into a new seventh file that I need to maintain in sync with the others or re-create it everytime I need it. Merges are slow and require you pay careful attention. Instead, I chose to have one file for all. One master file. No duplicates unless, of course, I make a mistake. One file to maintain. One file to search for information or potential connections. Now, if someone wants a report of my daughter's ancestors, I just create the report. If someone wants a file of her ancestors, I just create an export of her and her ancestors as the focus group into a sub file. If I need this again a month from now, I'll just re-create it from the master. Creating subfiles is quick and easy. If I need a file for my parents, I can easily set the focus group to their three grand-children and their ancestors and create that sub file. Does that help? C.G. Lavern, Whilst there are some who have separate ancestor files for their spouses, I am fairly sure that by far the majority of us find it much better to see what is going on if we have one large file. It is reasonably easy to separate one section off and create a duplicate for that section should the need arise whereas to work the opposite way round can create problems, particularly if there is inter-marriages. I agree with Patti that it is better to start with one's maiden name, rather than married name and this is pretty standard for married women. I also put the married name in the AKAs but not all do this (I can never understand why though!). If one wishes it is only two or three clicks to switch from showing the maiden to married name for an individual (or vice versa). You are right to consider how you will present your final output. It is not particularly a consideration which affects me as my output is on websites, but for a book it will be different. I would have a play with the Descendant Narrative Report and have a look how this presents. I think you will find that by using the defaults the presentation will be very repetitive. Changes can be made to the wordings on eg the Event Screens and the wording can be personalised for both the event and the person should you so wish. The main though though is to keep clicking on everything and don't forget the right clicks as there are a lot of "hidden functions" - they are detailed in the Help files but if you are like me you learn better by clicking! I agree. It is better in my view to have one file, your Master File, so that groups can be linked when you learn they should be. Ann, The issue for many of us who see people relate these huge files is in understanding how they came to be. There are certainly cases where someone who has been consistently working for many years will have a well documented database of tens of thousands of names. Hopefully you are one of those. But for everyone like that there are probably 9 (more likely 99) more who have simply appropriated thousands and thousands of names from other sources (such as the Ancestral File) without a shred of independent research to verify anything. Real research takes time, such as writing for vital records, scrolling through microfilm pages, traveling to libraries, etc. When you think about it, if someone works at genealogy like a full-time job, at 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year for 20 years they have worked a total of 41,600 hours. So to get a 120,000 name database they had to *average* finding, documenting, and data entry of 3 names per hour. Now I know that sometimes I stumble upon some large family groups, but then there are the MANY times I have spent all day traipsing around a graveyard, or reading microfilms, etc and come up empty. I certainly have not averaged 3 names per hour over the years. Then there is the fact that most of us, even those retired, probably are not actually spending a consistent 8 hours a day on genealogy, so the "find rate" has to be even higher than 3 NPH to accumulate those kinds of numbers. So, when people say they have 150,000 or 250,000 names, our skepticism is not with the *existence* of these large databases, it is with their quality. Only you can judge the quality of your research. If you know in your heart of hearts that it is not junk genealogy then there is no reason to take offence when someone expresses a *general* scepticism about these huge databases. [LegacyUG] Large Files
My file is probably the one you read about today - almost 106,000. It's a big file but I know of some that are two to three times that size. I began in the early 90's by inheriting the family association file of the descendants of my paternal ancestor, the one that came to Québec in 1659. That file contained about 30,000 individuals. I then embarked on a project that I call "Gabrielle and Her Cousins" - the ancestors of my daughter and her four cousins. And while the file I initially began with included male lines only, my file now has male and female lines back to France and England to the early 1600's, and The Netherlands to the late 1400's. It all adds up quickly. I should also mention that while the first 30,000 individuals came as one GEDCOM, all the others were added individually and manually; no appending and merging of GEDCOM's. And it is all one file which is the way I like it; as far as I'm concerned, it is the best way. C.G. I often read of people who have thousands and thousands of people in their database. Today I read of one over 100,000. I have trouble envisioning where all these people come from :-) I feel like a slouch - my best branch (paternal grandfather) only has about 400 people in it and I thought I was doing pretty well. I add direct line ancestors, of course, their siblings, all spouses and children involved. I also include the parents of any spouses, though, and generally just make a note of their siblings. For instance, the wife of my great-uncle would be included, as would her parents, but that would be the end of her line. (I hope I’m explaining this so it can be understood.) I read questions about downloading gedcoms found online. Perhaps I’m not as fortunate as others, but the gedcoms I’ve found have only included 3 or 4 people that would be relevant to me. In that case, I import the gedcom into its own file, and only enter into my main database the 3 or 4 people. To do otherwise would, to me, create useless clutter. Is there something wrong with my thinking? RE: [LegacyUG] Importing to Legacy
Welcome to Legacy ... I made the move from FTM to Legacy 3 some time ago, quite some time ago. It was a painful move but I never regreted it. If my memory serves me correctly, I had about 40,000 individuals in my FTM file back then. My Legacy file is now approaching 106,000. >From what you say, Legacy does run under Win98. But since Win98 is no longer a supported operating system, upgrading to XP will make any modern software such as Legacy more stable. Assuming of course your hardware is adequate for XP. However, upgrading your operating system probably won't solve the data import issues you are encountering. That is more likely a GEDCOM issue. The "GEDCOM standard" isn't much of a standard in that it isn't very well defined. It is open to much interpretation with many differences in the way various genealogy software publishers interpret it. FTM probably has the worst interpretation of all. Back in the 90's, someone had a tool that read a GEDCOM from one source (say "wacky" FTM) and translated it into a more standard GEDCOM or into a GEDCOM for another "wacky" genealogy software. I can't recall the what/who/where/when specifics of that tool but it did help me a lot back then. My suggestion is for you to upgrade to XP if possible. Explore Legacy carefully. If it looks like it's what you want, register for the Deluxe version, import your FTM data as best you can, fix your data (and notes, and sources, etc) as best you can and ditch Legacy. C.G. Ouimet Kingston, ON _ From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of m absalom Sent: Friday, January 11, 2008 19:51 To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Subject: [LegacyUG] Importing to Legacy Hello, I am trying the free Legacy V.6 on Windows98. I plan on upgrading my OS to WinXP in the near future. I was not impressed with FTM changes after V.11, so I am looking into making a switch (to Legacy or TMG?) in anticipation of future OS upgrades. I can keep my FTM V11 for now since it is compatible with Win XP but not with Windows Vista. I downloaded the free Legacy version 6 and followed the GEDCOM conversion recommendations of exporting in GEDv5.5 and ANSEL and then imported into Legacy (still on Win98). First off, I noticed my tree was fragmented during the import. That is, parents and families were disconnected. I know I choose "a worst case scenario" of a file to play with but I figured if I could make this file work my other files should be easier (LOL). My test file has about 14000+ individuals and has some duplicates due to the FTM program's poor merging process and has several lines cross connected by way of cousins marring cousins. My marriage facts, notes, and sources were lost during the import/fragmentation. I have tried the check and repair feature. I have tried re-exporting from FTM and re-importing to Legacy (with several different settings) but with no improvement. Will the import process improve with Legacy on Win XP? Is this a FTM export bug that I have to expect and work with manually? Next, I noticed that in split screen, I get run time error 7. I have 512 MB of memory (NOT video shared), no other programs running, few tas k bar programs and system resources at xx%. Is Win98 or LegacyV6 to blame for improper memory allocation? Anyone else have these problems? Or have any suggestions? Jane _ Never miss a thing. Make Yahoo <http://us.rd.yahoo.com/evt=51438/*http://www.yahoo.com/r/hs> your homepage. The Save to RTF (Rich Text Format) option gives you a file you can open and edit in your Word Processor. Only some of the formatting is maintained. Note that pictures can be embedded or just the link shown. See option on the Pictures tab in the Report Options. The pictures will not be placed as they are in the Print Preview. Also, if you want the pictures to travel to another computer with the RTF file, you need to further embed them in the file. In Microsoft Word 2003 you go to Edit> Links to save the picture in the document. When you do come to the Publication centre, note that some decisions are made for the whole book and others are specific to the "chapter" (the report being used for this section of the book). RE: [LegacyUG] Error in relationship chart
I do have the problem as well. I placed my daughter on the right and my grand father on the right and the relationship chart shows my grand father as Great grand daughter as does the title of the print out. If your grandfather is in the upper section of the relationship calculator and it reads "5th great grandson", that means that your 5th great grandfather is actually your 5th great grandson according to Legacy. Have a look at the print out ... Reminds me of the "I am my own father" joke ... C.G. Ouimet Kingston, ON -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of George/Kathy Sent: Monday, August 13, 2007 16:59 To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Error in relationship chart I think all is fine with the relationship calculator. If I'm on the left side and I want to know how I'm related to my 5th great grandfather, the relationship box tells me I'm his 5th great grandson. I checked the help file for an explanation of how to interpret this but didn't find anything. So, I'm taking it to mean that the data in the relationship box is how the person on the left is related to the person on the right.
