Re: [LegacyUG] Potential problems

2008-06-27 Thread Joseph

Check you dates. I've gotten these before and I had inadvertantly
entered the wrong century. Such as the parent's birth date is entered
as 1959 instead of 1859 and the child born at 1875. and a first glance
it appears good

Hope this helps you.

Robert, I did go to that area and clicked on where it said to download
from the web. When I did that, it took me to a Legacy 7 download
area I figured I couldn't download version 6.

Sherry, I'm going to look silly here, but I didn't notice the "Previous
Version" link... until I'd just gone back now.

However, I've ordered the new version 7 (Deluxe) and I'll be ok.

I really didn't want a new version, but at least now, I can pass the old
version along to someone else.

I haven't gotten my eMail yet for opening Deluxe 7.

Anyway
  Thanks

Re: [LegacyUG] Has anybody tried to use Legacy to build an Adam and Eve family tree?

I'm not sure who King Arthur the Great is, but I thought I might be the
only one who traced back through Scotland and Ireland and on into Israel
where I found I'm from two Israeli lines Levi and Judah
Also, I found possibilities for connections to all three of Noah's
sons. I tend to think that it may have been Japheth's descendants in
Britain whom the Romans conquered in Britain.

I am new to Legacy had used FTM for over 10 years. Most Royalty
in Europe have their family trees back to the Bible. If you can
line your family history to connect to one of them there are books
on their family History.
Our line goes back to King Arthur the Great in three different
lines. His family history is recorded in Family books so my mother
now has our line back to Adam & Eve taking the Bible after the
King's family History we are from the tribe of Judah.

[LegacyUG] Biological and Adoptive Parents

2008-09-13 Thread Joseph

How does one link an individual to two sets of parents and keep the
biological parents the main ones.

I'm using 7.0 Deluxe version.

I had my son-in-law connected to his adopted parents. Then we
discovered his biological father and we want to tie him to his
biological father as the main parent.

However, I can unlink the adoptive father from the boy, and link the
biological father who is not marked as "Father of son-in-law" as his
adoptive was.

When I link him to his adoptive parents, they again become parents of my
son-in-law... I want his biological father to be marked as "father of
son-in-law"

How can I get this done without deleting people?

Re: [LegacyUG] Speaking of alternate names...

2008-02-27 Thread Joseph

Personally, I only use what I've found on documents, or as in those whom
I've known, I will include nicknames and/or other names by which they
were known. My grandfather, for instance, was Luther Ambrose Snurr, but
everyone called him Jim. So I've added that into the AKA's even though
it was not on official documents. He even had a brother named James who
was not called Jim, but rather HE was called Tuin

I think it's interesting to find information like that because it gives
us a better look at our ancestors and who they were. Who knows, one day
we might find a News article about Tuin Snurr but without this
information, we might miss something about James Snurr.

So yes, I do keep as much identifying information as possible.

attached to each AKA so I am thinking you are supposed to be only
recording the name variations you have actually seen.

A couple years back I noticed a Relationship Indicator
problem (or not).

I showed a 9th Great-Grandfather in Family View. When I
clicked on his
parents I got a 8th Great-Granduncle married to a 10th
Great-Grandmother.
The 8th Great-Granduncle was also a 10th Great-Grandfather
but his brother
was a 8th Great-Grandfather which made all brothers 8th
Great-Granduncle. Genetically a 8th Great-Granduncle is
closer than a 10th Great-Grandfather
so I didn't consider it a bug to indicate that way.

At the time I exported to a Legacy file of all ancestors but a couple
indicated Xth Great-Granduncle. Now all ancestor's
Relationship Indicator
show as such not as Great-Granduncle.

Re: [LegacyUG] Adding Illegitimate Children

2008-03-05 Thread Joseph

The way I've been doing it is to set them up as married, but when the
marriage page comes up, I set them as "never married." This way it
doesn't list them as a spouse, but as an unmarried relationship with issue.

Joseph

MagnoliaSouth wrote:

I've had to use this as well. The best way I know of is to create the
marriage and add the child. Once done then select the member of the
family, click Edit > Marriage and check the box near the top left that
says, "This couple did not marry". On reports it will now say "Jill
had a relationship with Jack" instead of something like "Jill married
Jack".

There is no real reason to worry over it being listed as a spouse
within the application, so long as the report gets it right. It's the
print version that needs to eliminate it as a marriage and as long as
you check the box, it will.

Re: [LegacyUG] 67 foot descendant chart

2008-03-15 Thread Joseph

Actually, if you have roots in Israel, then you can trace all the way to
Adam and his dear wife, Eve. The Hebrews (Israelites) were very good at
keeping family history records. They taught their children to memorize
their history back to Adam of course through the father's side.

Mine goes into the lines of Levi and Judah, and from there, using the
Bible, I can go to Adam and having done so, I find there was about
150-160 generations. I took the Biblical 6000 years, and divided by the
average of 40 years per individual. Forty years being the unrighteous
generation. That brought me to 150 apparent generations.

So it seems to mathematically all work out to that time factor as
does my records.

By my reckoning, 67 generations covers about 2100 years. Obviously a
Creationist rather than an adherent of Darwinian Theory, and also
someone that hasn't read the bible too closely. Didn't some Victorian
preacher calculate that the Earth had been created about 4500 BC?

It's estimated to be set at 4004 b.c. Of course the exact year is

Birth Control? My history has some HUGE families. We have
several with over 20 children and many, many, many between 12 and 20.

Our family was Lutheran on my paternal g-father's side (German), and
Mennonite, Dunker, Amish on the mother's side (Swiss, Scotch, Irish for
the most part).

They had no idea what Whoa! meant.

I have about 9000 names in my list, but there are many lines going
back I have some cousins and such in the last 5 or 6 generations,
but beyond that, it's straight blood lines and while I add
siblings occasionally, because they are interesting characters, the only
way I get cousins back there is through intermarriage and is there
a lot of it.

(Don't tell anyone, but I think that's why I'm the way I amnot

Re: [LegacyUG] 67 foot descendant chart

2008-03-15 Thread Joseph

I think that we must consider that during many centuries, people didn't
live more than 30-40 years. I've discovered many people from
approximately year "0" didn't live beyond 30. There were plagues, wars,
and lots of other things that would cut those times down.

Take 70 years, which is the [Biblically] righteous generation, and we
get 87.7 generations.

If we take 40 years, which the Bible says is an unrighteous generation,
we get 150 generations. A lot of the 20-40 year deaths would compensate
for the extra long lives of people before Noah. That's about when the
ages of man got to be progressively shorter.

My charts show that the 40 year life span works out but of course
that says a lot about my history. Lots of scoundrels. Very unrighteous.

Re: [LegacyUG] 67 foot descendant chart

2008-03-15 Thread Joseph

I think that we must consider that during many centuries, people didn't live more than
30-40 years. I've discovered many people from approximately year "0" didn't
live beyond 30. There were plagues, wars, and lots of other things that would cut those
times down.

Take 70 years, which is the [Biblically] righteous generation, and we get 87.7
generations.

If we take 40 years, which the Bible says is an unrighteous generation, we get 150 generations. A lot of the 20-40 year deaths would compensate
for the extra long lives of people before Noah. That's about when the ages of man got to be progressively shorter.

My charts show that the 40 year life span works out but of course that
says a lot about my history. Lots of scoundrels. Very unrighteous.

Re: [LegacyUG] Backing Up Legacy Files

2008-03-20 Thread Joseph

That's wise As with others, I have learned to back up my files
regularly. I have files on another hard drive as well as on CD's...

I remember the second or third time I lost information and had to go
back and get the most recent backup then start from there and
rebuild Usually it wasn't too awful much but it was time
consuming when it should never have been.

It's best to back up to another drive. I'd say that second best is to
back up to a CD that's re-writable... that is, formatted like a
regular hard drive on which files can be over-written, deleted, changed,
added, re-saved Then it works just like a hard drive.

Hmmm this reminds me I have to back up my files.

Re: [LegacyUG] Backing Up Legacy Files

Scanned, that's an image which means that they won't compress much
Your best deal (imho) would be CD'sset up to act like a hard
drive. Or if you don't mean to replace them, and only wish to store the
files, then I'd burn them to DC's or DVD's and leave the disc open so
more can be added.

Also, I would save certain things on a disc. Photos on one, census
records on another, death, marriage and birth certificates on their own
discs, or if there's not all that many, put these certificates on one
disc... grave markers on yet another. That way it works like a filing
cabinet

John Carter wrote:

USB "thumb" drives are good for storing Legacy data, but I also have
almost 9GB of scanned photos and documents (wills, census, land records).

The time and expense of research made $100US for an external hard drive
acceptable to us, even though we're retired and don't have unlimited funds
(How many restaurant meals does it take to reach $100?). Many old
documents are available on microfilm, but some microfilm printers can't
produce a readable paper copy from the microfilm of a faded original. The
only way to get a good copy is with a digital camera, thus your "original"
copy is a digital image. I think it prudent to have more than one copy of
an "original" digital image, especially if the microfilm is 400 miles away
and not available via interlibrary loan. Although I have paper copies of
most things, I can't take a filing cabinet with me when doing research
away from the house - even if "away" is just the 10 miles to the
genealogical section at the county's main library.

Thumb drives are relatively inexpensive: 4GB for $20US at geeks.com with
free shipping this week. Microcenter's latest flyer has 320GB external
hard drives for $95, 500GB for $120. Also watch the office supply houses
(Staples, Office Max, etc) for sales.

Others have mentioned bad experiences with unrecoverable data on CDs.
Since DVDs use similar materials, they are also subject to the same types

of failure (not scratches - it's damage to the "label" side that causes
most failures). I've also experienced CD failure, so I tend to use hard
drives for backups. Short of physical damage such as a head crash while
running, I can recover most of the data on an otherwise non-readable hard
drive (I was the PC support guy for an international consulting company
and their laptops experienced some harsh treatment).

Re: [LegacyUG] Backing Up Legacy Files

2008-03-20 Thread Joseph

No, Disc, CD and DCD are to me one and the same. When speaking of a
hard drive (or HD), that's the term I use. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

When you say long term, just how long is long term, short term... etc?
Maybe a place online... a storage place. Don't they have those? And
they should be hard drives (HD)

Respecfully, I would suggest the neither CDs nor DVDs are suitable for long
term storage. As well as the potential problems which have been mentioned
elsewhere in this thread, they loose their retentive properties over time (just

Your best deal (imho) would be CD's set up to act like a hard

That way it works like a filing
cabinet

How long is a piece of string? As I understand, the time it will last depends
on the quality of the disc, the more expensive the longer they last, at least
in theory. Anything from 2 to 10 years. I also believe that Rewritables retain
data for an even shorter period of time - maybe up to 5 years.

I don't really know about DVDs but I suspect that are not a lot different in
this respect to CDs. I use a usb stick, an external Hard Drive and also MS
Spaces (on-line storage)

It very much depends on the brand and model. In the past six months
I've
recovered data (for other people) from a 3 year old Western Digital IDE
drive (not bootable) and an 18 month old Samsung SATA drive (bad sectors
and not bootable). These were both desktop PCs, so not subject to the
mechanical abuse that laptops receive. On the other hand, I have an
ancient laptop that runs almost 24/7 on a drive that was used and of
unknown age when installed 3 years ago.

Thinking "no-years" leads to good backup practices ;-)

John

I heard 5 years, then I heard 2 years, then some-one told me they'd had

think
it's one of those things where if it works - great! If it doesn't,
good
thing I had another plan. I use external hard-drives, flash-drives,
online storage (Mozy) and email.

[LegacyUG] Web Page - Name indexes and Index Page

2007-12-24 Thread Joseph (Ragweed)

I'm new here so I hope I do this correctly.

I've been trying to get a workable page. I have discovered two problems.

I did one a year or so ago which gave me an index page with links to the name
index. Also, it gave me that index of names which were linked to the
respective pages for that particular name(s).

However, when I attempt it with Legacy 6.0.0.168, no matter what I attempt it
does not give me the name index (with links), nor does it give me the main
"index.html" page.

I do have well over 8000 individuals. could this be causing a problem?

How can I get these pages to be created??

I don't think size of database is an issue. There are
some 'bugs' sneaking into 6.0.0.168, which may or not
be related to this. That problem is found in the
Search tool part, which may tie into your problem.
(The archives includes all the discussion of the
problem.) It has been identified and the next update
will fix it (per support). I guess they should be back
after the holidays, and if that is not the same
task, will ask for more info. For further help to come
ASAP, which report were you indexing.

I had the same problem yesterday. I had been using Legacy for some hours
and no matter what I tried it would not generate the surname index page.
To

be more accurate it was generated but with '0' names. Like Ron I think you
mean web pages.
In the end I did a file/file maintenance/check/repair and closed and
re-opened Legacy. One or both of these fixed it

Jan, please don't be put off by one person with a negative opinion. As
far as I can see, your query was on-topic for this list because you were
asking how best to make use of the program in your situation, and that is
what the replies sent to the list were based on.

As is often the case, there is more than one way to handle things in
Legacy. You've had at least two different views given - something for you
to ponder as you decide what you're going to do. There isn't a "right"
answer, but a matter of working out what is right for *you*.

While you consider the options, please take the time to sit back and read
the posts on this list for a while. I'm sure you will find that it is a
very good place to be for finding out more about the Legacy program, as I
and many others do. Please don't let one bad experience ruin it for you.

Re: [LegacyUG] Adoption Question

2008-01-05 Thread Joseph (Ragweed)

I think if it were me, I'd do it this way:

Child born James Lee Smith and the Johnson's adopt him. In the first name
field I'd put James Lee (Smith) and in the Sir name I'd put Johnson. Then in
the notes I'd elaborate on the adoption.

  From: Charles & Shirley Woolley

Thanks Dawn. I will try your suggestion.

From: Dawn Crowley
You might choose to use alternate names. In the family view, click on
the icon of the "repeating" person to add the AKA. At present, Legacy
does not have a method to see at a glance which surname was used.
However, changes can be documented in the notes.

Re: [LegacyUG] Return Receipts

2008-01-16 Thread Joseph (Ragweed)

I agree that I was a bit behind it's difficult to keep up with such a
high volume of eMail as I get here.

However, I'm on several list that requite one to send in "Plain Text" and
this is how I have my eMail set and it works. And I get to use html
also.

I'm know there's various ways of getting eMail to send plain or html but
what I'd explained is most versatile for me.

Joseph,

That is totally WRONG advice.

Momalot admitted to being a newbie on LegacyUserGroup. She has now learned
how to post in plain text. You replied to her post from several days back
which was in Rich text therefore your post also was RTF because you
checked "Reply to messages in the format in which they were sent". That
should be turned OFF. We should always post to Legacy in plain text
regardless whether originating or replying.

Rootsweb allows posting to in any format because their server
automatically converts to plain text. Some other groups totally reject
RTF. Legacy's server can't do this but they request we co-operate by self
control.

Legacy gives us an excellent product value for the money. I wouldn't want
them to overspend on a server if they had to pass on the costs to us
users.

Re: [LegacyUG] Date descriptions

I've run into a problem with dates too.

I've known the date, such as August 10. But the year could be either 1853
or 1854. I've think I've tried the following:

10 Aug 1853-1854
10 Aug 1853-54
10 Aug 1853/1854
10 Aug 1853 or 1854

.and nothing works, it takes the highest year.

I would rather not have to use "abt" or "ca" for this as use these for dates
that are entirely approximate, such as "abt June 1922"

Does

anyone have personal or other guidelines for which wording to use when (no

I didn't think about using those abbreviations for them since the date is

From Jenny M Benson
Legacy allows you to use "about", "circa" and "calculated" (with options
for abbreviating each) with dates. I can understand you not wishing to
confuse a truly approximate date with one where you are sure there is only
a possibility of 2 years, but why not use "about" for one circumstance and
"circa" for the other?

You will know immediately precisely what is indicated by the wording and
you can add a note to your file for the benefit of others. (I live in
hope of a "General Notes" field sometime, where we can add such
information which is relevant to the whole file, not just particular
individuals.)

[LegacyUG] Name List Window

2008-01-21 Thread Joseph (Ragweed)

Back in my family there's areas where there's so many family names that sound
the same, or are very similar using names which are spelled nearly the
same.

I'm running into areas where for each name I'm wanting to add, I have to search
through my records for the name, and one file has about 9000 and another about
500. So I'm having to stop what I'm doing to bring up the search, then shut
that down to do what's necessary...

Is there any way in which I can leave the name search window open, behind or to
the side, while I'm entering information???

If not, I wonder how difficult it would be for the programmers to put that
capability into the program? It would be a good and beneficial thing for
people with older computers where it takes a millennium for bring up the name
search window just to have to shut it down again

Re: [LegacyUG] Name List Window

2008-01-21 Thread Joseph (Ragweed)

Maybe I was a little vague in describing my problem. No matter what I have
up and running, it would be terrific to be able to have the Names List handy
without going through closing what I have open, then opening the names, then
going back Very time consuming.

There's been times when I had the window up asking if I'm going to enter a
new individual or one that's already in the data base. With the Names list
already open, I could quickly check to see if it's a name that's already
there, without first closing the query box.

From ronald ferguson

Joseph,

It is not at all clear to me what you are asking here. If you enter names in
the Individual Screen then there is a blue arrow at the end of the surname
box which you can click to display all surnames. If, however, you are asking
whether it is possible to search and amend a database at the same time then
this is not possible for any database as far as I know.

Re: [LegacyUG] Name List Window

I've been hearing a lot about "Access"Exactly what is this and where
can I read up on it and maybe get it?

Also, I do have Open Office. which program do I use and what file do I
open? If I sound like I'm not sure what I'm doing you're right.

Joseph

From Gary
You could however open a *copy* of the database in Access or OpenOffice,
which would not be affected by the new entries. One would need to remember
that names added during the current session would not be on the list, but
unless one adds duplicates that would not be difficult to track. The one
added in that sessiion would be present if a new copy was made for each
subsequent session.

Joseph,

I thought you may have meant something like that, hence my final comment.

It should be borne in mind that surnames are not stored in alphabetical
order
but in the order they were added to the DB. Thus a new entry is added at
the
end. When one asks for an alphabetical list then this means sorting, and
whilst

I do not know how Legacy does this my guess is that a temporary table is
created. Adding a new name to the list means that the temporary file is
now
invalid and a re-sort is necessary. Furthermore many other changes will
have

been made to linked tables.

I do not know much about Access but I have, out of interest, run a test
on a DB
I have written using Open Office for parish registers, whereby I sorted a
table
and parked it on the task bar whilst I entered entered a fictitious
person. When

I went back to it, it had been closed by OOo (as I expected).

My guess is that Access will do the same and hence I fear the answer is
that it

cannot be done.

Re: [LegacyUG] Merging....

2008-01-25 Thread Joseph (Ragweed)

These names are not in one single file. There are two separate files.

_

From JLB
I'm trying to imagine what you're doing and since I don't know, I really
don't know. Except your language hints at something. What do you mean
you took one database and merged the other database? You have to
'Import' one file into the other, or both files into a new family file
before you even begin merging. There's no such thing as separate
databases when you're merging. At that point you've just got one and
you're looking for the duplicates within it.

_
Joseph (Ragweed) wrote:
I'm having funbut I'm really glad I saved the new database under
a new name.

I took database 'Smith' (653 names)
Then
I merged database 'Jones' (8832 names)
I've been working on this one for about 35 years
I'd gone through all the directives, clicks, and such in the merge.
Then I'm looking at the new database 'blunderbuss' (8831 names)
I see names from 'Jones' so I look for names from 'Smith' and they are
not there.

What's worse, I understand meging can (or will) remove one of the
duplicate names, but I lost a name Possibly from a duplication I'd
already had in the file.

I was in smith, wanting to bring jones into it, and I end up with
blunderbuss with one less name than jones and with no smith. Doesn't
make sense.

Like I said, I still have the two old files so I can start over. One
thing I've just now considered is that maybe I should have saved it in
the 'smith' file where I started.

What's you're opinion of this??

From JLB
Oh, well, that's pretty easy.

Basically, it goes like this:

Import one file into the other. Under "File" - Import from. After
that:

Click the Merge button, and go to Find Duplicates, then follow all the
prompts about backing up your files. On the Merge Options screen it's
already got some default options set up. That's fine for now probably.
Click Continue on that.

On the Merging Two Individuals screen it will begin to bring up what it
thinks are duplicates. If you're sure left and right side are the same
person, you can click the items left or right side that you want to
keep, go through all the tabs along the top doing the same thing and
then click Merge Right into Left Individual. If you're not sure, DO NOT
MERGE.
What you can do instead at this point is click Options and tag both
individuals. Later you can Search those people and see them (probably)
side-by-side in the Name List. Over there it might become clearer to
you if they're the same person or not, and then you can go back and do a
Manual merge.

Also, take note of black button(s) over on the left side of the screen.
If you click on one you'll see you have other options. Sometimes you'd
like to keep some of the information from one version of the individual
although you're mostly choosing the other one.

Anyway, carry on through your Merge screen like this, doing what you can
or clicking Skip to Next.

As you're going through, under Options, you can also click on "Not
Duplicates" when you're sure about that, so the next time you run a
Merge they won't show up.

If you totally blow it you can restore your database to what it was
before you started the merge. Under Edit/Undo merge on the main
toolbar. You can also (under 'Merge') view the Not Duplicates list,
delete everything and start over at any time.
Merging is really fun once you get into it. It looks hard until you
realize how easy and well-designed it is. I avoided it for a long time
and when I finally got into I didn't want to leave.
If you only have a handful of people to merge you can also do this
through a split screen view dragging one side to the appropriate box on
the other. I believe there's a video demonstration of that somewhere at
the Legacy site, perhaps under Tips from the Experts.

Re: [LegacyUG] District of Columbia

2008-01-25 Thread Joseph (Ragweed)

I think part of this question would be the time factor. At what time did
this individual live, marry, or die there? Whatever nation was in control
of that particular place, in this case the Virgin Islands, you use that.

I would think it's like our states. At one time Charleston, WV was part of
Virginia... and if an ancestor was there during that time, then it should
be marked as Virginia, not West Virginia.

From familyjesse

Okay, pardon my confusion, but how would you address Virgin Islands. I have
family from the Virgin Islands and there are two designations for them:

Virgin Islands, Danish West Indies
Or
Virgin Islands, USA

The Virgin Islands are territories of the USA. So how are people designating
places like Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico... and in past times Philippines.

Re: [LegacyUG] Merging....

2008-01-25 Thread Joseph (Ragweed)

I'm having funbut I'm really glad I saved the new database under a
new name.

I took database 'Smith' (653 names)
Then
I merged database 'Jones' (8832 names)
I've been working on this one for about 35 years
I'd gone through all the directives, clicks, and such in the merge.
Then I'm looking at the new database 'blunderbuss' (8831 names)
I see names from 'Jones' so I look for names from 'Smith' and they are not
there.

What's worse, I understand meging can (or will) remove one of the duplicate
names, but I lost a name Possibly from a duplication I'd already had
in the file.

I was in smith, wanting to bring jones into it, and I end up with
blunderbuss with one less name than jones and with no smith. Doesn't make
sense.

Like I said, I still have the two old files so I can start over. One thing
I've just now considered is that maybe I should have saved it in the 'smith'
file where I started.

What's you're opinion of this??

From JLB
Oh, well, that's pretty easy.

Basically, it goes like this:

Import one file into the other. Under "File" - Import from. After that:

Click the Merge button, and go to Find Duplicates, then follow all the
prompts about backing up your files. On the Merge Options screen it's
already got some default options set up. That's fine for now probably.
Click Continue on that.

On the Merging Two Individuals screen it will begin to bring up what it
thinks are duplicates. If you're sure left and right side are the same
person, you can click the items left or right side that you want to keep,
go through all the tabs along the top doing the same thing and then click
Merge Right into Left Individual. If you're not sure, DO NOT MERGE.
What you can do instead at this point is click Options and tag both
individuals. Later you can Search those people and see them (probably)
side-by-side in the Name List. Over there it might become clearer to you
if they're the same person or not, and then you can go back and do a
Manual merge.

As you're going through, under Options, you can also click on "Not
Duplicates" when you're sure about that, so the next time you run a Merge
they won't show up.

If you totally blow it you can restore your database to what it was before
you started the merge. Under Edit/Undo merge on the main toolbar. You
can also (under 'Merge') view the Not Duplicates list, delete everything
and start over at any time.
Merging is really fun once you get into it. It looks hard until you
realize how easy and well-designed it is. I avoided it for a long time
and when I finally got into I didn't want to leave.
If you only have a handful of people to merge you can also do this through
a split screen view dragging one side to the appropriate box on the other.
I believe there's a video demonstration of that somewhere at the Legacy
site, perhaps under Tips from the Experts.

It's not as hard as it may seem. Do you have many people the same in
both files or is there just one point of connection? You only have to
merge the common folks. Everything else just flows together.

Good point, and well taken. You are quite correct.

Georgetown and Arlington are indeed also in those time factor things. I've
been there and the streets and traffic are insane Large circles with 6 or
eight streets intersecting... If you don't get the right street the first
time you could go around for hours.

Anyway... good point.

Joseph

  From: frankanedc
Georgetown is interesting because it was a separate city before the District
of Columbia was established, so if your entry is prior to 1800 it would be
Georgetown, Montgomery Co., Maryland. Not now though. Now, it identifies a
part of the city of Washington, like Harlem or Soho in New York, but it is not
a politically defined area. The real estate market makes most use of names
like Georgetown, Foggy Bottom, Capitol Hill, etc., but they're not good post
office addresses.I would put Georgetown, etc. in notes if you want to keep
it. Street addresses and zip codes go in address lists, but not in 'Location'
on the individual's information page.

Other places that give rise to similar problems are Arlington, Virginia,
which is all urban county is not a city, and St. Louis or Los Angeles, which
are counties as well as cities. And then there's New York City with its five
boroughs. . .

Nope. That's pretty well how it goes. It will scan your entire database
putting up comparisons that you have to make choices about. It's not a
rocket-scientist, just a computer. If you know it's not a duplicate, you
can mark it Not a Duplicate so it doesn't come up again the next time you
run the Merge option. If you're not sure, tag the two individuals so you
can look at them more closely later. That's about it. Just slog your way
through. OR, if you're sure you only have 25 or 30 you will probably find
them next to each other in the Name List. You could find one pair at a
time there and do a manual merge on them.

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I really like it. MMFT shows migration paterns, shows where your ancesters
birth, marriage, probate, residence, all your events. State, county. Plot
those. Print the maps, pdf, save as image (jpg) etc. Gazetter you can add
to or ignore. Geo codes all your names and places, time periods and
more.Time scrolling and more. I hardly use the online items. The program
has a learning curve, but very useful the more you use it.

When I see the term Britain or British Isles, etc. I think of the nation
unit that is over the individual countries. I know "nation" might not be
the right word Britain, in my humble mind, seems to me to be the
overall government and Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England, Australia
are all ultimately ruled by the Crown.

I did seem to consider that the Royal Crown was over all the British
holdings, and each of them are individually governed within themselves.
Almost like our state and federal relationship, except I see Britain as
allowing a greater self-governing rule with some minor overseeing by the
Crown; where as in the United States, there's this HUMONGOUS federal
government where people like to dictate what the individual states can and
cannot do.

If I'm wrong (and I probably am), I love to know 'exactly' how this really
is I have lots of ancestry and interest in

I will accept private eMail ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) if this would be too far
off topic.

Yes! That's because Americans think that Scotland & Ireland are States
within the UK. The TNA regards the censuses as separate entities, based on
the legal system: England & Wales being one entity, Scotland a second and
Ireland (north & south until partition) a third.

Thanks Mike,
Although I should point out that the set of CDs produced by the LDS
Church is quite clearly labelled 1881 British Census and includes
England, Scotland, Wales, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and Royal Navy.

Re: [LegacyUG] CHILD OF UNMARRIED PERSON

2008-02-16 Thread Joseph (Ragweed)

Set them up just like the parents are married, but in the marriage section, you
enter "Never Married" for the parents.

  From: Dick
I have a ( male ) cousin who had a relationship that resulted in a son being
born. As far as I know and / or have been told be his siblings, the couple
never married, and the son was raised by the mother. The boy is now over 21.

My problem is ... how to enter this person in the family records? I
presently have him with his father ( along with the mother ) , and hsve notes
that the father and mother never married, and that he was raised by the mother.

All that is known of her is her surname JOHNSON ... the father ( cousin )
more or less has been unreachable for many years.

  Any ( workable ) ideas?

  Thanks

  Dick
