Re: [LegacyUG] Filter for location details

2009-09-08 Thread noddie
Yes, I got it to work. I had to do two searches, the 1st one and
then filter it out of the search list only.
I needed to ask for Burial and Death place blank on the second query
for it to work properly.

Thank you all heaps for your fantatic help.

Cheers
Gwen

Hi everyone

Doncaster who has no death or burial details./

I did this:

Individual
Death place
Equal to
blank

This works however it also picks up everyone born in different place
so I have a large search list of people.
What could I use as a second condition to filter this out better so
I only find the following

Anyone born/christened in Doncaster

Anyone who does not have information in the Death/Burial place

Thanks heaps for any help with this. I am a little confused how it

[LegacyUG] How to do a direct line report

Hi
I am sure this has been covered on the forum, and if so I apologize.

I am wanting to do a direct line only report or printout so I can see
which of my main descendants I can
target for missing information. Is this possible and how would I
easily go about it.

Hi John

It appears to me that you are right, and that is why he appears twice
and when remarried but not to a sister it
only appears once. Guess there is nothing that can be done, but it
just wastes space and makes the report a

little confusing.

Thanks for your time with this truly appreciated as it is with
everyone that has replied.

Gwen,
It looks to me that the starting person for the report is an

descendant and the husband would appear twice (once as the husband
of each of the sisters) and so would his information. If the
starting person was an ancestor of the husband, he would appear
just once and so would his information. Also, in the case of a man
married twice to non-sisters, only one of the wives would be a
descendant and the other wife would not be mentioned.

I'd have to do a little experimenting to try all the variables of
family relationships, so your situation might be something else.

Hope this helps.

You can minimise what is shown by unchecking "show spouses

Re: [LegacyUG] Source text colour

2009-08-08 Thread Noddie

Hi again

I have gone into the screen suggested and still cannot seem to get
the right one for the 'red text' which my blue text for the Data text
is updated to when you add a source to either

Birth, Chr, Died, or Buried.

There is nothing that suggests or represents red text when I click on
Data Text colour (think this is the right button to go to) only blue,
which I have for the above labels. I believe if I update it to
something else I shall still have the red text added after I apply a
source.

I cannot seem to find anywhere that is apparent to make ammends for
the red text. My colours are quite muted grey and blue which I like
but the red
is like an eyesore applied after I have added a source to any of the
fields mentioned above.

Any other clues what I am doing wrong.
Thanks heaps

Hi
I have not used source writer much and wondered about the red
highlighted text that now appears when you add a source to

the family page ie Born
Chr
Bur etc.
The text quite bright and I wondered if it is possible to change
this to something more unobstrusive. I realise the red stand out

and this could be the reason behind the colour.

Hope this is clear and would love any comments on this please.
Kind regards

Individuals

Marriages
for photos to be printed?
I have ticked the following as I would like to have the event

Pictures menu in scrapbook

Individual pictures
Individual event pictures - My death certificate event is not printing
Marriage pictures - even though this chap never married

I am at a loss and i think the program Ver 6 Deluxe is still limited

I like having both old and new version installed - it allows me to
keep "working" with the older version while I "play" with the new
version to get used to it and make sure I don't hit any hiccups.
It also allows me to compare screens and option settings and report
settings between the two versions.

One "problem" - version 7's database is a different format. Once
you've converted your database, version 6 won't be able to read
it. In the past they've offered an "after the fact" patch for the
old version so it can read the new version (but of course doesn't
offer the extra features). But its too early to know if they will
do this for version 6/7 yet (I'm guessing they will). Best bet -
make a COPY of your database and use one copy for version 6 and a
different database copy for version 7 while you are "playing"/
experimenting with it.

NOTE - I have not tried de-installing an older version after a new
one is installed. I would think it would work fine (assuming,
again, that it is installed into a different directory), but I
haven't tested it.

Hi Ronald

Thanks for your email.
I have done what you said and to be honest it makes no sense to me.
I cannot find out if I have Visual Studio installed or not.

Do you know how to check, in easy layman terms.
I hae also read about deleting the .usr and .dbm files. I have the

I am wondering if this problem arose when I exported my info from my
old computer, as I shifted the photos around

to better suit my new computer?
Any help would be wonderful.
I had one reply from Millennia but none since I wrote again.

Hi again

Thankyou to all for replying to my email. I have checked what you
said Cathy and it was
only the first two pages of four that did not print. Sorry to be
such a cluts.

It seems okay now.

Hi Gwen,

Can you clarify?

The reports have blank pages deliberately at the beginning after
the title and content pages - like a book. You don't mean those
blank pages do you?

Some sections can also be set to start on a new or odd numbered page.
See the tick box in the Index section
See tick box on Page Layout tab - Start each generation on a new
page. If you don't have many notes or events, I suspect that could
possibly sometimes cause a blank page.

You say "that is fine". Do you mean that the preview is fine and
doesn't have blank pages?

What happens if you save to PDF? Does that have the blank pages?

Are you sure you are not just printing odd or even pages when you
come to print.

Are you including pictures at "original size"? That can mess up the
page breaks.

Sorry I can't think of anything else.
If it's the preview with the unusual blanks, it could be a memory
problem with your computer.

I'm assuming you have a new computer and haven't put XP on your old
98 computer. Many computers running Win98 didn't have enough RAM to
handle XP. Same with the switch to Vista from XP. Each operating
system wants more and more RAM - and you usually need at least
twice the minimum recommended by Microsoft.

Cheers,
Cathy

Well, some of us have tried. I have not. They reported various degrees
of success, but the common denominator seemed to be it runs slower on
Mac than Windows. For some, that is acceptable. For people like me, that
is bone breaking frustrating unacceptable.

Ask yourself this: As Legacy grows, it will use more Windows commands
and drivers. I tell people the reason I won't try it is because Legacy
compatible programs such as Passage Express, GenViewer, GenMatcher,
AniMap, probably will not be optimized for for both operating systems.
Thus, if I had a Mac, I -probably- could run Legacy, but what about all
of the other programs Legacy works so well with? I am not sure.

Hi Gwen,

No it's not possible to have two different main names for the one person.
You have to choose whether to use the birth name as the main name and
the adopted name as an AKA or the other way around.

If the person was adopted as a babe, I'd use the adopted name as the
main name as this is the name that most records will be in - however
I think the rules would say to use the birth name as the main name.

Hi
I am at a loss, how to correctly enter adopted children so that the childs
birth name
appears with the birth mother (unmarried), and then the childs adopted name
appears with the
adoptive parents.
I note on the help file it explains how to enter multiple parents, but does
explain how
to do the latter. I know this is possible.
Hope I have made this clear as an explanation.

I tend to get into trouble when I answer this list as not all the information
is in the request as is this one. I interpret this as a report from a
particular generation through to the last person which may be yourself. In this
case I think there is.

Open the Relationship Calculator (Tools > Relationship Calculator), use the
left side as yourself, and the right side as your ancestor say first
generation. Click Print then Preview and there is a chart from the first
generation through to yourself showing direct line ancestors between. If this
is not what you want, I apologise in advance

Gwen,

This was a known bug in vers 6.0.0.110 which showed some errors with
respect to relationships of half relatives. This was fixed in the
latest version, 6.0.0.118, which can be downloaded from the "Legacy
Home" tab or from http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadUpdate.asp.

Hi again Les

I managed to get the Resource Meter going. Not sure why it did not do it

find on the net the cab it was in, so it made it easer I think.
I see what you mean, I can now tell when I am getting dangerously low.

Gwen,
The problem with W98 is the memory that is used to keep track of running
applications like Legacy Family Tree. This is a fixed amount of memory that
is not affected my the amount of RAM your computer has. It can not be
changed. The information stored there is dynamic in nature so when an
application (or part of an application) closes down, memory used by that
application should be released. If it isn't, eventually you run out of
"system resources".
My experience has been that version 6 apparently has problems with releasing
used resources when moving from one part of the application to another. This
even happens when using the same features I used in version 5. So it doesn't
seem to be associated with the new features of version 6.
Since I run a dual boot system (meaning I also have XP on the same computer)
if I need to, I just reboot into XP to finish my task at hand. (For those of
you who are interested, I access the same data file from W98 and XP).
Gwen, what I suggest is that you do is what I have done. Microsoft has
provided a handy resource monitoring application called the "Resource
Meter". When running, it resides in the system tray down by the clock. You
should be able to find "Resource Meter" by going to Start - Programs -
Accessories - System Tools. If it isn't there, you can create a shortcut on
your desktop by right clicking on the file name and selecting "send to" and
then "desktop (short cut)". The file name is RSRCMTR.EXE and is located in
the C:\Windows folder. I have the application start up when booting my
computer because I put the shortcut in the "Startup" folder.
When "Resource Meter" is running, you will get a warning message when the
resources get low. You might be able shut down other applications that are
running at the time to free up resource memory that Legacy Family Tree
needs. Or, exit Family Tree and reboot your computer to create the most free
resource memory.
For further reading, see:
http://www.informationweek.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=17200581
I believe there must me a memory leak that needs to be fixed by the
programmers. Using the same features in version 6 that were used in version
5 and running into memory resource problems would seem to indicate that
something changed with how memory resources are now being used in version 6.
I don't believe you should have to upgrade to XP to solve this problem. I
also believe that there are a lot of Legacy uses that wouldn't have a clue
as to how to upgrade to XP especially if they are senior citizens like me. I
don't think Legacy wants to force these people to upgrade to XP. It could be
a costly mistake if they ended up loosing some of their files from other
applications in the process.
I hope this helps you Gwen (and maybe others running W98) to at least
monitor the memory usage and to determine the applications that may be using
a lot of resource memory. I would be suspicious of any of the Norton
applications that may be running.
Les

Re: [LegacyUG] no pictures - sometimes

2006-10-02 Thread Noddie
Hi Ron
Thankyou for your email.
That is okay.
I am running Win98 SE and my ram is 512MB. I have recently exported my
records and then
imported them again, and although this has alleviated some of the problems I
still do have errors.
The main one is when I ask for a Preview/screen print of any report I cannot
get the pictures to
show, only placeholders and borders. When I take a report to Html, Pdf I
get the pictures. The
Preview/screen option is intermittent and I have been able to get images in
view about 3 times,
(in about 3 dozen that I have tried.)
Thanks for your interest

2006-10-02 Thread Noddie
Hi Les

I cannot thank you enough for your wonderful email, and the time it must
have
taken. You went into depth and I understand things much better now.
I was too experiencing problems with ver 5 and this is replicated in ver 6
I find it strange that I can view pictures in page I create to Html or Pdf
but not when
I ask to Preview/screen print.

I cannot find out how to extract the Resource Meter, as it is in a cab file.
I am trying
to find out which one it would be in. I did what you said, but when I got
to the have disk
part, it just sits there, as I believe I need to instruct where about the
file. As it is compressed
I need to extract the cab file first I believe. Still working on that one.
I too believe that there is a memory leak of some sort, as the reading I
have don on the internet
which presents this problem, indicates such.
I shall persevere with this. I have tried all that has been asked and also
exported my
records and imported them back in again. This has helped a little. Though
I do still have
errors.
Thanks once again truly wonderful.
Gwen

I too am using W98se with 512 meg of memory. I didn't have this problem with
version 5.
I doubt if there is anything the user can do to eliminate this problem -
only the Legacy programmers can fix this.

Hi Clarence
Thankyou for your reply.  I did wonder about
W98SE as this is what I have.
I have 512 mb of ram, and now have 1.7 GB free
space., and still I am having
trouble.  I am also getting an error 91,
now.  It seems the more I try to fix or
use the program the more error messages I am
getting.  I am not able  to
upgrade to XP or any other just yet, and wonder
what to do.  Legacy keeps closing
down with certain errors, and this is very
frustrating. I did get one picture to show
on an individual screen, and now I cannot get any
again.
At a loss
Thanks heaps however

I was wandering what operating system you are

This sounds link a W98SE type resource

I run a P3 with 512M and still ran into this

It would show some pictures, but not all... or
  error 7 out
The problem is the way W98 does memory

I upgrade to W2K, which does it like XP (sort

  I still miss my W98.

[LegacyUG] Stil cannot get pictures

2006-09-28 Thread Noddie

Hi again
Sorry to be a nuisance, but I have spent the last
hour or so, taking off programs from my computer to allow
enough space for my FH Legacy to run.

I now have 1.7GB and still no pictures.  This
is frustrating me,  and I am at a loss as
what to do next.

1. Can I delete the USR files, Legacy 1,2,3,4,5,6
and 7 and would this make a difference.  I understand they
re-appear once you start legacy again.

2. Or do I need to uninstall Legacy again, and
start over.

Thanks heaps
Gwen

Re: [LegacyUG] Publishing centre and pictures

2006-09-28 Thread Noddie
Hi again Brian
I went to the page and checked the errors, but it did not mention a 'Runtime
error 7' only error 7.
I checked the requirements before I upgraded, and have 512 mb ram, and 1GB
of space., on
a Pentium 3 machine.
I am still unable to get the pictures to show in any of the reports, whether
it be an individual
or any other.
I had this problem when I upgraded to version 5, and I think it might have
had something to do with
the .usr files? I found a copy of these in a new directory off legacy I had
made, and that is what
made me wonder if that was the fix. Do you have any other ideas, as the
main reason for my
upgrading is I need to printout and publish par to my FH for an Aunt, who is
aging, and I would
like to give her, her side of the family before too much longer.
Thanks for your time
Regards
Gwen

On the Legacy Home tab, click on the "Online Troubleshooting Help" link
and on the webpage, select Solutions by Error Number

Error 7 is an out of memory error. Did you check the system requirements
before you upgraded to Version 6.0 Minimum memory is 256 MB and if you
use a motherboard with onboard video some of your main memory is stolen
by the video so even more than 256 MB might be needed in that case.

memory problem on my part. Beside that I cannot get my pictures to show up
when I go to the Publishing centre report, and select the Family picture
tree, and then preview I cannot get any picture into he boxes when this
report is generated. I had this problem when I upgraded to version 5 but
cannot remember how this was fixed. Any clues or help would be greatly
appreciated.

[LegacyUG] Publishing centre and pictures

2006-09-28 Thread Noddie

Hi
I have just installed the deluxe version 6 and updated the program to the
newest version. I am
having trouble with Runtime error 7. This could be a memory problem on my
part. Beside that I
cannot get my pictures to show up when I go to the Publishing centre report, and
select the Family picture tree, and then preview I cannot get any picture into
he boxes when this report is generated. I had this problem when I upgraded to
version 5 but cannot remember how this was fixed. Any clues or help would be
greatly appreciated.
Cheers
