RE: [LegacyUG] unknown surnames

2009-11-27 Thread Roger Jarrett
I like the idea of using privacy brackets [[]] in the name field but upon
looking in the help file it would seem that this option is only supported in
the notes. Is this true? Can [[]] be used in the name fields?

...or you could also put identifying information within privacy
brackets[[]].This is VERY handy in preventing the accidental merging
of the 35,000 unknowns in your database. . By putting(for
example)[[wife of Joe Blow]] into your database as a first or last
name for an unknown female, the information is available to you but
can be easily excluded in any reports.

Re: [LegacyUG] unknown surnames

2009-11-26 Thread Brian/Support
The Descendant Narrative also has the option to insert underlines for
missing names, dates and places. The Family Group Sheet has a variation
on this. It will insert a small name, date, place for missing
information. These are positioned in the top left of the box where the
information should be inserted.

I use a different approach entirely because I like how it looks in the
reports that I do for my clients and for myself.

I use 10 underlines in a row for a name. In using this to send reports
to family members, I find they fill in the blanks easier and faster than
seeing 'Unknown" in the wording.

for example

last name unknown - Sarah __
first name unknown - __ Smith

both names unknown - __ __

field blank, use "unknown"? Any suggestions?

As others have pointed out, there is a Yahoo group, but it is apparently
not greatly used.

Those that keep suggesting there should be an additional group should
bear in mind that whereas there are a few (FSVO "few") who can't cope
with the traffic on the existing one list, there are likely to be many,
many more who cannot cope with 2 lists, so the more lists there are, the
less chance of anyone getting the help they need as the knowledge and
expertise will be much more thinly spread.

I think the complainants might also bear in mind that one of the reasons
why there are so many posts to this list is that it is very popular just
the way it is!

Possibly because they didn't develop it, and the 3rd party software doesn't

To me a Digest is a pure waste of time, and would cause much ire when
inexperienced users try to respond to a specific message. Whole Digests

Why reinvent the wheel. Subscribe to the Legacy group through Rootsweb.
You have the option to subscribe in digest mode. I wouldn't hold my
breath waiting for Millennia to bring their list serv into the modern
day. They refuse to add vital security features such as the ability to
block html and attachments, so do not hold your breath waiting for them
to offer a digest mode.

I'm not sure why the Legacy website programmers do not allow for a DAILY
DIGEST feature for those of us who want it. True enough, there is a lot to
wade through if there is just one LEGACY e-mail per day, but one can usually
look to the SUBJECTS at the front of the digest and click on or go down to
the particular subjects that interest them (they are usually numbered). In
the absence of this, someone may wish to set up a YAHOO LEGACY group for
those members who wish to be able to get a daily digest since that feature
is available with YAHOO groups. I did a search and although there are a
couple related groups like one for using Legacy with websites, there doesn't
seem to be a Yahoo group devoted exclusively just to the Legacy Family Tree

The software Legacy uses for its mailing list does not have a digest option.

You could create a rule or filter to divert the list mail to its own
folder, which creates the same effect without having to wait for the
digest to arrive.

This has been discussed plenty of times in the past on this list, and
you can read those posts in the archives. I've posted before about
instructions on my personal web site for creating rules/filters for a
variety of mail programs and services which you may find helpful if
you've never set one before.

[LegacyUG] OPTION FOR DAILY DIGEST IN FUTURE ??

2009-11-11 Thread Jerry
I'm not sure why the Legacy website programmers do not allow for a DAILY
DIGEST feature for those of us who want it. True enough, there is a
lot to wade through if there is just one LEGACY e-mail per day, but one
can usually look to the SUBJECTS at the front of the digest and click on
or go down to the particular subjects that interest them (they are
usually numbered). In the absence of this, someone may wish to set up a
YAHOO LEGACY group for those members who wish to be able to get a daily
digest since that feature is available with YAHOO groups. I did a
search and although there are a couple related groups like one for using
Legacy with websites, there doesn't seem to be a Yahoo group devoted
exclusively just to the Legacy Family Tree Software. Just a thought
for what it's worth.

I use a different approach entirely because I like how it looks in the
reports that I do for my clients and for myself.

I use 10 underlines in a row for a name. In using this to send reports
to family members, I find they fill in the blanks easier and faster than
seeing 'Unknown" in the wording.
for example

last name unknown - Sarah __
first name unknown - __ Smith
both names unknown - __ __

Laura,

You make a very valid point for the purposes of your reports, which in this
case are designed to elicit a response from the recipients. It also
illustrates that the treatment of unknowns depends on the personal choice
and end use, as I would not wish for underscores except for the purpose
which you describe.

This list is an "opt in" service provided to us
for free by Legacy.  One stops receiving messages by unsubscribing.  If
this service does not suit your needs, you may opt not to use it.
Therefore, the LUG email, by definition, is not spam.

It *is* a very active list most days.  This comes in mighty handy when
a problem arises!  Others who have experienced the same issue chime in
and readily share their tips.  I appreciate this added benefit with
this program and learn much from the varying points of view presented.

Simply resubscribing to another email address that you can log onto and
read at your leisure looks like it could work for you.  Another option
is to use the LUG archives.

[LegacyUG] unknown surnames

2009-11-11 Thread Jennifer Dorner
I cannot find on the Legacy site how they recommend dealing with
individuals whose surnames are unknown. In a previous program, I would
put two slashes (//) in the surname field, but when I do this in Legacy
it warns me about adding symbols. What is advised: leave the field
blank, use "unknown"? Any suggestions?

Possibly because when this question has been raised on this list the
majority of users do not want it.

Why doesn't Legacy have a forum setup instead of or along with a mailing

subscribe to individual threads that I prefer. This mailing list is so
active that my phone is constantly buzzing and I now ignore my phone, which
is bad because I will miss my important emails or IM's.

We’ve discussed this many times on the LUG list. Many of our users are on
dial-up or have monitored time on the internet and forums can be cumbersome
and slow to load (even on broadband!), eating up internet time.

And therein lies the problem. When selecting a link to unsubscribe the
default should be "unsubscribe." At the very least there should be NO
default selected. If the request is submitted with no selection checked
a warning should then point out the choice. I have encountered this
"default subscribe" mentality on a number of occasions and it invariably
angers me to the point I no longer wish to have anything to do with the
site in question. This behavior seems counter productive for any
product, something the Web Site designers should consider.

* Double-check the spelling of your e-mail address when unsubscribing.

* E-mail addresses can have valid variations. For example:

john...@msn.com (variation 1)
john...@mail.msn.com (variation 2)

* E-mail addresses can have aliases that bear no resemblance to your actual
account address. For example:

john...@verizon.net (alias address)

* E-mail can be forwarded from one address to another. For example:

john...@deseretonline.com (old address)

I've seen emails on the newslist from people who asked how to unsubscribe
and I just assumed they did not read the bottom of the emails which clearly
says

"To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp "

Now I understand their dillemna. They were not crazy or uninformed. They
were just frustrated.

I've been to that website and unsubscribed - several times ... ! Each time
the website confirmed that I was indeed unsubscribed. But, that webpage
must have not told the newslists because I continue to receive messages.
Very aggravating. Something is broken.

Re: [LegacyUG] Help with deleting without deleting :)

2009-11-10 Thread Heather Stovold
Without looking at your database - I suspect that both you and your husband
are likely only entered once in the database (probably) - but that there has
ended up being 3 marriages for the 2 of you. You need to check if you are
listed as having "other marriages" and if so, say to unlink people from the
extra marriages.

Now that said, as you deleted your husband, and then reentered him, you
probably don't have the 3 marriages anymore, and don't need to do that
so go to your husband's parents, select to Add child, then select add an
existing person - then select your husband to add to their family.

(note that it is always best to make a backup before you do things like
merges, or deleting someone, or anything else when you aren't sure what to
do to accomplish what you want done.)

Wow! The plot thickens. Things have definitely changed at BING. Now I am
able to CRASH or LOCK-UP Legacy at will.

Would others please try the following to see if this happens to you. I
would
suggest opening a test file and not your real database or else make sure
you

have a current backup.

1. Using either the menu or the blue triangle for an information window,
get

to the Master Location List.
2. Click on the GEO-CODE box at the top and select "Geo-code all
un-resolved

locations through Virtual Earth" (message to programmers: please change
Virtual Earth to its current incarnation of BING.)
3. An error window will appear. You may click YES, NO, or QUIT.
4. It doesn't matter what you click because you'll be stuck in an endless
loop of getting another error, OUT OF STACK SPACE.

You might get lucky and get back to the first error window but you are
still

stuck. There is no way to close Legacy without closing the error window,
which refuses to do so.

You will have to terminate the LEGACY.EXE process using Windows Task
Manager

(CTRL-ALT-DEL) or just reboot.

Seems as if BING changed the calls or parameters that needed to be passed
to

its interface and Legacy is stuck sending data using the old method which
causes the lock-up or crash. Its not Legacy's fault because it used to
work

but as someone else already stated, "Microsoft moved the goalposts."

You can move the pin. You just have close the map and reopen to see where

[LegacyUG] Location Mapping

2009-11-10 Thread Charles Apple
I received the following reply from Legacy Technical Support regarding the
Mapping issue;

"This is a new issue, probably occasioned by a change at Microsoft Bing Maps
(formerly Virtueal Earth). It was logged earlier today as issue number
0002956: "BING Interface No longer works to position map" and has a high
priority for the programmers attention. The fix should apeear in a free

Hope this helps to resolve some concerns.

I have also noted a new difficulty with the mapping feature. From the
symptoms I would suspect that Bing has stopped honoring mag requests
from Legacy software, possibly blacklisting Legacy. I would hope that
the programmers have already been in contact with Bing regarding this
matter.

Some complaint here!

There is no movement of the map when in Master Location List view, so if I
enter from the Master List icon and select a place which has already had
Lat & Long entered the map doesn't "go there". If I select a place which
doesn't have the Lat & Long entered, the map doesn't "go there."

If I click the arrow by the Location field from an Individual's screen,
the map will "go there" if the Lat & Long are entered, but nothing happens
if there is no Lat & Long already entered.

Having accessed the Master Location List via a location which has Lat &
Long, if I right-click to re-position the pin nothing happens (the pin
doesn't move), but if I close that screen and then go back in I find that
the pin as been re-positioned. Similarly, if I enter a new location, and
enter the Lat & Long, it doesn't appear on the map but if I close the
screen and go back in the pin has been positioned.

In the right John is married Alice BROWN with two children.
Now.I know that in both panes, John is the same person with two
different families.

QuestionDo I a: Click on Merge right into Left or do I
 b: Click Skip to next?
If a: Does Legacy create a second marriage or does that happen if I click
Skip to next?

I have looked in the help file and the manual and cannot find the answer to

I look forward to any help with this query.

2009-11-09 Thread Linda McCauley
Sherry,
Bing Maps seems to be working fine for me (finds locations and gives
directions) but I'm having the same problems as the others from within
Legacy on both my XP desktop and Vista laptop (using IE8 on both).
I've never had a problem with mapping before this.

I think you’ve hit on it, Todd. Legacy’s mapping calls up Bing (was Virtual
Earth) and if there are problems with that website, you'll encounter
problems using the mapping in Legacy.

If you're having problems with Legacy's mapping, go directly to Bing/Virtual
Earth and see if there are problems on the MS website.

RE: [LegacyUG] Master Location List help

2009-11-09 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
Interesting. I seem to be on the exact opposite end of the current mapping
problems (or lack thereof). Prior to last week, if I got to the Master
Location List by using the blue triangle thingie next to a location from the
Individual's Information window (or Marriage Information), the map would
never come up. However, if I used the menu item, View/Master lists/Location,
then the map would come up. The difference is that getting to the Master
Location list from the menu would start with the topmost blank item
selected. From there, I could select any location and the map would zoom to
that location as expected. I figured it was a bug that would eventually be
addressed.

Suddenly last week, I noticed the map working as expected regardless of how
I got to the Master Location List. I know Microsoft was having some problems
with the roll-out of Bing and I just figured those problems were continuing
until last week. As it stands right now, the Bing map feature is working
perfectly.

No complaints here.

Re: [LegacyUG] Heritage Collector Suite offer

2009-11-09 Thread Kramer
Angela, I was just going to ask the same question. One of my co-
workers just used iMovie on a Mac computer with photos to make an
awesome presentation. I wonder how this differs. I also wonder if it
user friendly and worth the money. There are other ways to organize
photos and family members might like the bubble IDs of family members
but they might also like to see a clean photo without that. Legacy
has a photo center to store photos, it's just organizing the links to
the photos that is the issue, I believe. I too was wondering for that
price if I should pass or not since I don't know anyone who has used
it yet.

There are other times when the year is one of two, such as regnal years.

To enter 15 March 1806-1807, be sure to enter the full years - 1086-1087.

Using 1086/87 will not work unless the within the double-dating period.

double dating isn't working in that century. I have run File

completely removed and retyped date. If add / and two numbers, just
reverts to the second number. If I use one number that ends up at the

I am using Vista and Legacy 7.0.0.109.

RE: [LegacyUG] entering royal titles

The best guideline I've seen for this situation is _Getting It Right_ by
Mary H. Slawson. (I bought my copy from the Legacy store.) Slawson has a
full 100 pages on how to handle names and titles using Legacy screens for
her examples. Although many people make up their own rules for entering
this data, Slawson's book is heavily oriented toward LDS members doing
temple work, so perhaps following her suggestions would bring up more hits
in the IGI or other LDS databases.

The guidelines are far too extensive to quote here, so I'd suggest you
invest in the book.

I'm having a problem searching for IGI names. I haven't been able to find
any guidance on how to enter royal titles into genealogy programs.
Typically royals don't have formal surnames prior to the early 1900's so
where exactly do you put their title? Do you put the entire title as their
surname, i.e, Duke of Windsor? Do you break it up - Prefix: Duke Suffix:
of Windsor.
I've noticed that if I use the IGI search, I get a lot of zero results. But
if I go to the family search site I get results for the same person.
Example, I have Ferdinand Karl Archduke of Austria in my database, entered
as First Name: Ferdinand Karl , Surname:Archduke of Austria. IGI search in
Legacy returns zero hits. If I go to the website and enter First Name:
Ferdinand Karl Archduke of Surname:Austria I get 3 results. However, not
all records are like that.

I'm confusedWhat is the actual standard for this?
Thanks a bunch

You'll probably get lots of suggestions and things get complicated with the
Windsor's. In 1917, the name House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was changed

anti-German sentiment during WW I.

So Edward VII (son of Queen Victoria) and his son, George V (until his
1917 proclamation), ruled as the House of SCG. In 1917, however, George V
issued this proclamation: "Now, therefore, We, out of Our Royal Will and
Authority, do hereby declare and announce that as from the date of this Our
Royal Proclamation Our House and Family shall be styled and known as the House
and Family of Windsor, and that all the descendants in the male line of Our
said Grandmother Queen Victoria who are subjects of these Realms, other
than female descendants who may marry or may have married, shall bear the
said Name of Windsor..."

Thus, Edward VIII, later Duke of Windsor and son of Edward VII, had the
royal surname of "Windsor". You could reasonably use "Windsor" as the royal
surname and use the suffix field to denote his two titles: King Edward
VIII, later Duke of Windsor.

In 1952, Queen Elizabeth II reaffirmed George V's proclamation and managed
to make this situation even more complicated. Some of her descendants are
"Windsor", but others are "Montbatten-Windsor".

As for the Archduke of Austria, I believe he was of the House of Habsburg.

I'm sure others will have better suggestions; as I said previously, things
can get complicated.

RE: [LegacyUG] entering royal titles

2009-11-09 Thread CE Wood
There is no standard, even among the most reputable genealogists. There are
continuous debates among them. Remember, PLANTAGENET is not a surname.

The important thing is to have in your files as many of the different names
a person is known by. That does mean much searching, but that is the
research necessary when dealing with titles, especially pre-1600 ones. And,
spellings are all over the place too, so familiarity with those variants
helps too.

Legacy allows a person to be entered in many different ways, the main reason
I switched ages ago. For instance, you can enter (surname in CAPS):
Humphrey V de BOHUN, suffix = 1st Earl of Essex
prefix = 1st Earl, Humphrey V de Bohun, of ESSEX
Humphrey de BOHUN, suffix = 2nd Earl of Hereford
prefix = 2nd Earl, Humphrey de Bohun, of HEREFORD

If you show AKAs, you can find the person under BOHUN, HEREFORD, and ESSEX.
This method can also show the succession of titles.

Subject: [LegacyUG] entering royal titles

NConway
