Pat, You have to reverse engineer this. A sample was also shown in one of the Legacy news articles. Heres the gist of it: 1. Do a search for all individuals with a census event and then tag them with a number; let's say 9. 2. Next, search for ALL Individuals with Tag 9 = untagged. Dave - Go to the Missing Information tab and click Birth Date, Create List, Tag. If this this a deluxe feature (can't remember), you can still search the regular way by IndividualBirth Date Equal and then leave the what to search for field blank. Forcing that researcher to spend time and money obtain their own copy of every document I have located over decades of searching does nothing to extend the lines. I suspect most of us have used other people's research as a starting point without verifying every detail of that previous research. There are many lines that have been well documented by multiple researchers and published into books. Any time we cite such a book without viewing the original sources that the author used, we are making a statement on how much we trust the author to have been complete and accurate. And of course, many times such books are the only source we have if the original documents no longer exist or we are prohibited from seeing them. For example, since none of us will likely be able to handle the Domesday Book, we have to rely on the accuracy of transcribers. Similarly, if we show by the thoroughness of our documentation that we were careful and complete researchers, those who follow after us should be able to have some faith in our work and not have to reinvent the wheel. It is the pedigrees with little to no documentation that need the most verification. Gary I agree with all you have said. I should have mentioned that I was not into pure genealogy - just the self-designated keeper of the family history. However I feel that the information I have given in my sources will easily the info to be checked by anyone else if they don't feel comfortable with accepting what they read. Any images I have obtained can also be viewed via my database and in hard copy files. These include burial/cremation documentation, birth, death, marriage certificates, census documents and others such as mining leases, land purchases, letters, etc. Whilst my methods would not suit the pure genealogist, I am comfortable with having left easy to follow links to sources for anyone coming along after me. Had I studied and followed all the correct methods of recording sources, I'd still be wading around somewhere in the early long ago's. Also I think we are truly selling our descendants rather short by underestimating their ability to pick up where we have left off. As a descendant who is updating an old family history, I thank you for this sentiment. My ggrandfather, who published the family history in 1898, could not have imagined the existence of birth and death certificates, let alone microfilm copies of them, to say nothing of the internet. My search was for a death place England however when I record the death place I abbreviate to Eng. Once I amended to this the results appeared. So silly of me, when I actioned the search I followed the instructions from Jenny to the letter without thinking of how I record the information. Just a thought - are you sure that all the individuals in your records have a 'Death Place' included and does it include the word 'England' or just SSX or SRY? As the vast majority of my individuals are in Great Britain, I haven't bothered to put England in anywhere, although I do try to put Scotland, Ireland, Wales or IOM. I'm afraid I hate the recommended version which includes seemingly endless commas in some cases, particularly the earlier you go back in time when you may only have a village name and county. My view is that this is for my family and my descendants and if all 'eyes' are dotted and 'tees' are crossed, there will be nothing for any descendant to do for themselves! Whilst on this subject, and at the risk of being shouted at I don't fill in absolutely every detail for sources. If I found someone at a certain address in the 1851 census I shall say just that, e.g. - source 1851 census for Isle of Man at such-and-such an address. No more is needed as far as I am concerned - I have a printout of the page from the census and that has the actual page numbers etc. Why is more needed for a family document? You may say that if it is to be published it is only right to include all detail, but having seen some of the mis-information that appears in Ancestral Files on the LDS site, I can only think that the more double-checking one has to make, the better. Under Look for whom select Individual, under Where to look select Death Date, under How to look select After and under What to look for select 1858. Now tick the box for Second Condition and make sure the radio button for And is selected. Make selections in each of the boxes as you did above, but choosing Individual, Death Date, Before and 1946. Now tick the box for Third Condition and again select And. Make selections as above, choosing Individual, Death Place, Contains and England. Finally, select the radio button for Clear List before this search and then click the Create List button. I have just prepared to do an update and I received a No results found message and yet I had just recorded two items which would have fallen within the scope of the search. I even changed it to look for SRY or SSX in lieu of England as I knew I had recorded events for these counties. Is anyone able to advise me if I am doing something wrong? While each of us may have different ideas on how and what and how much etc to record in the source fields, I feel that it is just as important for future individuals to do their own researching and verifying as it is for me to do it in this present time. I have read many comments by Listers here about how will my g-g-grandchildren know what I mean etc - well, my answer to that is how did *I* know what others before me meant. The answer of course is by undertaking the research, and checking whatever research has been handed down. After all, 30 years ago, there were no online facilities or digitized records or anything that we have access to today. I can't imagine that this will take any sort of a backward step and in fact, the future keepers of family histories will probably have a much greater range of tools at their disposal than we could ever dream of! Search problemI don't know if this will solve your current problem, but if the index is for the years 1858 - 1946, you need to select the search after 1857 and before 1947, else it will not select any deaths in 1858 nor those in 1946.
