[LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Help window blank

2010-02-07 Thread Dawn Del Guercio
Hi all,

I'm here plugging away at my genealogy data entry. I have two
questions related to one another. I am trying to find a way to do an
ancestor tree (graphical) that shows the siblings of my ancestors on
the same tree. I couldn't find a way to do it on Legacy, and then
through to try out the charting program. I did an ancestor standard
tree on there, and though it looks nice, I still can't find a way to
list siblings on there either. My first question is, is there a way
to do a visual ancestor tree which includes siblings?

Then, in my attempt to find out if I could do this in charting, I
clicked on the help button, and then on the "help system" button and
it brought up a BLANK html window with no text. Where did the help
manual go within charting? I also don't know how to go about checking
for updates and updating charting when necessary.

Thanks for your help!

Dawn,

I guess Help was inadvertantly omitted, I understand it is known and will be
corrected.

Your other problem is rather more difficult. The siblings are not included,
of course, because they are not ancestors. I cannot see how this can be done
in Charting, as the obvious way is to create an fdb file with just the
people you want, but you would then have to create a descendant chart for
multiple people and Charting cannot do this.

[LegacyUG] Advice on Sourcing of marriage record

2010-02-07 Thread Connie Sheets
[My apologies that this won't thread properly, but I'm still having to read the
list in the archives].

The Missouri Marriage Record images at Ancestry are problematic, IMO, because
Ancestry has not given enough information as to what we are looking at.  Yes,
they are apparently using State Archives microfilm (they don't tell us which
microfilm), but it is microfilm of record books maintained at the county, and
they don't tell us which record book.  Sometimes, it is possible by browsing
through the images to figure it out, and when it is, I include that.  I ended
up citing the database, not the images per se, because it is such a mess.  I
used the generic online database template.

Examples:

"Missouri Marriage Records, 1805-2002," database, Ancestry.com
(www.ancestry.com : accessed 22 Aug 2009), Nathaniel Gilmore and Mary E.
Hancock; with images of Jasper Co. Marriage Book C, p. 152 (stamped) from
Missouri State Archives microfilm.

"Missouri Marriage Records, 1805-2002," database, Ancestry.com
(www.ancestry.com : accessed 16 Aug 2009), for Zadock Douthat and Thirza M.
Hancock; images from Missouri State Archives microfilm of Newton Co. marriage
records are provided, but they are nearly illegible.

Janis, if you're still monitoring this list, would you chime in here?  I know
you struggled with this some time ago, but I'm not sure how you resolved it.
I'm not so interested in whether you used a template, but what your final
source citation to these particular Ancestry images looks like.

I am curious as to why you are using a database template when your Source
is online images.

I don't have access to the Ancestry records to which you refer, but I
think I would use the Marriage records>Found in Governmental
records>Marriage registers>Created at State/Provincial level/Online images
template (or something similar if that isn't an exact match) and add the
further detail - where known - at Soiurce Detail level.

This is how I approach very similar English records with images on
Ancestry. Where the Source details are incomplete (or incorrect, as
sometimes happens with Ancestry!) I note this in the Source Detail
Comments.

Jenny,

Ordinarily, I do as you suggest, but these particular Missouri marriages are a
complete "hodge podge" of images.  For some counties, the images are almost
impossible to read, so my information is coming more from the database than the
image.  In other locations, it is impossible to determine the volume and page
number (and as a result, it is the database, not the images, that is telling me
the marriage occurred in  XYZ county).  In still others, I can't tell for sure
whether it is a register or some other format.

I therefore decided it was safer to cite the database than the image.  I can't
remember my exact reasoning at the time but it was probably some combination of
the following:  (1) This alerts me that I need to do more to find the original
record than I might ordinarily do with other images. (2) I'm a "lumper" to the
extent possible, and I didn't want to have a separate Master Source for each
county.  I just wanted one master source:  "Missouri Marriage Records,
1805-2002." (3) I must not have liked how the citation looked when I used the
marriage template.

I'd also use the SourceWriter Marriage template that you mentioned, but I see a
nice feature about Connie's format in that it treats the title of the record
set as the lead element whereas the SourceWriter template doesn't. The second
example is part of a similar citation generated by SourceWriter.

"Missouri Marriage Records, 1805-2002," database, Ancestry.com
(www.ancestry.com : accessed 22 Aug 2009)

Bell County, Kentucky, Kentucky Marriage Records, 1852-1914; digital images,
Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com);

Hi Ron,
Hmm... I'm surprised there's no one that has ever tried this.
I do of course want the focus to be on my ancestors, so I don't want
the sibling families... just the siblings listed along side my
ancestor.

My reasoning is because I need a visual way to see the relation
between many people with same or similar names. Raymond, Raymond J.,
etc.

Any ideas at all about how to accomplish this?

Dawn,

I don't think it is a case of nobody having tried it, indeed I can remember
similar sorts of requests over the years. It can be done in html, but I
can't think of a way of doing it for a chart/printing. Someone else may have
an idea though. It may be possible to create the html and use another

I use Charting and my help file comes up fine.
To check for updates click on "Tips & Updates" (the last item on the
Charting toolbar ribbon)
As regards the chart you want
In Legacy tag all ancestors on an unused tag (Family View.> Edit > Tag
records) .
Then on the second screen Check Direct line Ancestors
Also if you want them, check "Include other spouses" and "spouses of
siblings".
Then go to File > Export to > Legacy File, Give it a name and then check
"all records with an individual tag of " your tag number.
Use this file to produce your chart.
It takes longer to write than do!

Re: [BULK] RE: [LegacyUG] Advice on Sourcing of marriage record

2010-02-07 Thread S. Fry
I often use and save the digital images from "Missouri Marriage Records,
1805-2002," at Ancestry.com and like Connie, I find the images problematic
for the reasons she stated. I use other sources to find the book number and
only look at the transcriptions to see how Ancestry has dealt with the
sometimes difficult handwriting.

But this isn't about Ancestry.com; it's about how to source the material
from Ancestry.com. I use SourceWriter template for Marriage records > Found
in governmental records > Marriage registers > Created at the county level >
Online images

Here is how I fill in the fields for the master source:
Source List Name: Marriage Records - Missouri 1805 - 2002
Jurisdiction State: Missouri
Jurisdiction County: [I leave this blank because I don't want 114 Master
Sources for Missouri's 114 counties!]
Series: Missouri Marriage Records, 1805 - 2002
Format: Digital images
Website Creator: Ancestry.com
Website Title: [I leave this blank as it seems redundant to repeat
"Ancestry.com" or "Missouri Marriage Records, 1805-2002"]
URL: http://www.ancestry.com
Date: 2007

In the Source Detail fields I put:
Item Type: marriage register
Volume: Stoddard County Book 1 [I know it is book 1 from other sources]
Page: 251
Person 1 Surname: Crews
Person 2 Surname: Saddler
Year: 1876
Date Accessed: 4 Jul 2008

Under the Text/Comments tab, I transcribe the marriage record in the top
section and enter comments about the source in the bottom section.

Here is the end result:

Missouri, Missouri Marriage Records, 1805 - 2002, Stoddard County Book 1:

I'd also use the SourceWriter Marriage template that you mentioned, but I
see a nice feature about Connie's format in that it treats the title of the

The second example is part of a similar citation generated by SourceWriter.

Comments.

I realised what I did. I made a Descendant chart of the earliest ancestor

Sherry, I really like the way that you are sourcing the marriage records for
Missouri that are on Ancestry.  If you had researched and found the marriage
license and marriage at the courthouse of record, how would you source.  I am
new at this and am interested in how others are sourcing data.  I have several
sources that I have obtained at nearby courthouses and am not sure how to

To check for updates click on "Tips & Updates" (the last item on the
Charting toolbar ribbon)
As regards the chart you want
In Legacy tag all ancestors on an unused tag (Family View.> Edit > Tag
records) .
Then on the second screen Check Direct line Ancestors
Also if you want them, check "Include other spouses" and "spouses of
siblings".
Then go to File > Export to > Legacy File, Give it a name and then check
"all records with an individual tag of " your tag number.
Use this file to produce your chart.
It takes longer to write than do!

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Help window blank

2010-02-07 Thread Judy Wardlaw

I have just tried my database on a second XP computer and the Help File in
Legacy Charting is blank. The Help File still works on my own computer with
the latest Legacy version! Both from within Legacy and from the stand alone
programme on the desktop. Mystery!
Judy

It sounds as though you are not using the latest version of Legacy
(V7.0.4.6).

[LegacyUG] Extra Comma

2010-02-07 Thread Gavin Nicholson
Hi List,

I seem to remember that with the initial release of version 7 there were a lot
of issues with the source writer templates and extra commas when certain fields
weren’t filled in. I don't seem to notice that anymore generally so I am
assuming that they have been mostly fixed? If so, is there a way to submit bug
reports because I have found a spare comma in the IGI template when no title is
entered but a batch number is, a comma appears before the batch number.

Thanks,
Gavin...

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Help window blank

2010-02-07 Thread GeoSci
Go to your Legacy folder and copy the file
LegacyCharting.chm. Go to the LegacyCharting7 folder within Legacy
and PASTE the LegacyCharting.chm file. Help will now work correctly!!

A minor BUG but one that should be fixed - The help files ends up in
the wrong directory during INSTALL!!

Patricia
I am not surprised that you are confused. All I produced was a direct line
descendant chart with siblings from one earliest male ancestor. I would need to
repeat it for the other male ancestor surnames if I was interested in them.It
is not a complete chart but a series of charts. I thought that Dawn was
interested in those with the same surnames.

  Judy,

I am a little confused or missing something in your reply to Dawn. I
understand creating the new file, but then how do I use the charting to produce
the file with all ancestors and their siblings? All I have been able to get is
the ancestors.
