[LegacyUG] Combining Files With Sources
Hi everyone. My cousin has given me a gedcom file on my dad's side of the family which he has researched and it has quite a bit of information I lacked. However, I also have information that he does not have and I intend on merging the two files together. The question is this: I would like to give him credit for his research (however, it would have been better to have the actual sources he used, but I will just have reference his name because he did not cite the specific sources). I also want to include my source information when I combine the files. I do NOT want to populate every source field, just the ones that have information. Is there an easy way to combine these files and include his name for the things he contributed and my name and sources for the things I contributed? [LegacyUG] Fixed, cascading pedigrees
Good morning all! First of all, thanks to everyone who helped with my last question. Preparations for my class are well underway and I feel considerable more confident now than I did a week ago, thanks to all of you. Some former PAF user have come to ask me if Legacy can fix the numbering in a cascading pedigree chart. I was a little confused but apparently this means that it will leave holes where the missing charts would be, i.e. if charts 2 and 3 were not used it would hold those numbers but would continue on with numbers 4, 5, etc., thus allowing for the insertion of subsequently discovered information without the massive reprinting of the entire pedigree chart. I'm not certain if I have expressed this well. I can picture it in my mind, but expressing it on paper is a little more difficult. Is this a feature that Legacy can do? Apparently RootsMagic doesn't, and my compatriots are looking for an easier outlet than GEDComming their files out to PAF to print the cascading pedigrees. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Re: [LegacyUG] Combining Files With Sources
I am not sure that it is possible to do everything you ask because I do not see this as an either/or re the information each of you contributed to the file. There will probably be a lot of info that you both have. You will however be able to source all the info in his GEDCOM to him. When you are importing the GEDCOM into a file there is the option to assign a Master Source to the data coming in from the GEDCOM. There are two options. You can assign the source once to each person as an unspecified or you can assign the source to each piece of data contained in the GEDCOM. Using the second option you can link your cousins data to each piece of info in his GEDCOM. After you have merged his file with yours the merged individuals will have his GEDCOM as sources for the data in his GEDCOM. Information without his source will be the info in your file that he did not have. Through Advanced Sourcing, I would like to link the Source Citation/Detail on my Source Clipboard to one selected event (identified by the same Event Type, Date, Place, and Description) that is common to all individuals or marriages I have selected on the Which Records to Use Tab. Unfortunately, Advanced Sourcing seems to only allow linking the Source Citation/Detail to all events of all individuals or marriages I have selected on the Which Records to Use Tab. Re: [LegacyUG] Fixed, cascading pedigrees
It will never work on a permanent basis because you cannot 'plan' to find specific ancestors to extend pedigree charts in an orderly fashion. 'Some former PAF user have come to ask me if Legacy can “fix” the numbering in a cascading pedigree chart. I was a little confused but apparently this means that it will leave holes where the missing charts would be, i.e. if charts 2 and 3 were not used it would hold those numbers but would continue on with numbers 4, 5, etc., thus allowing for the insertion of subsequently discovered information without the massive reprinting of the entire pedigree chart.' What I do is change the numbers using a blue ink pen and when it is really 'messy' reprint them all.Goood luck Rich in LA CA --- On Fri, 12/9/11, Maureen Lake arespo...@yahoo.com wrote: From: Maureen Lake arespo...@yahoo.com Subject: [LegacyUG] Fixed, cascading pedigrees To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Date: Friday, December 9, 2011, 10:12 AM . Re: [LegacyUG] Advanced Sourcing to One Selected Event
Thanks for the response Dennis, Millenia seems to have had a demand at some point for the Advanced Sourcing capability, otherwise we would not even have it. Right now, advanced sourcing can be done for other individual attributes and note fields. Quite a variety. It can even be done for events. But when Events is selected, it attaches the source citation/detail on the clipboard to all of the events currently attached to each selected individual/marriage, which I'm not sure why anyone would ever want to do that. It just seems like Millenia was on their way to doing it, but then just didn't finish the development before releasing the advanced sourcing capability. And then they just never got back to it. I have put the request in to the developers, but the only response I am getting is that they think I should already be able to do it. I notice the developers occassionally respond to messages on the user group, so I'm just putting it out there to the entire group. If this cannot be done and is not planned, does anyone have any ideas on how to have fewer clicks and windows to go through to attach the source clipboard to an event attached to mulitple individuals (or even the event clipboard). Currently, we have to click around to all of the individuals and paste the source individually to events or paste the events individually. This is a very time consuming process. Family Tree Maker 2012 has the ability to attach source citations to selected events from the equivalent of their advanced sourcing window. Roots Masic 5 has the ability to share an event (with attached source citations with multiple individuals from a single window. It just seems like everyone else is making this easier. Re: [LegacyUG] Advanced Sourcing to One Selected Event
I agree Ron. I have twice sent followon messages to my ticket number over the past three days asking if it is something they would consider or not, and I am getting no response (after the initial response of , but you should be able to do what you want to do and my explanation that I can't). I have brought up shared source citations and shared events in the past (I have been on here a long time, though I'm not prolific with the messages), but this does not seem to go anywhere either. That is what I would really like to see, but in the interim, the ability to link source citations to selected events through advanced sourcing would be adequate. Just trying to ask for a slight plus up of existing capability. In my post, I also asked for an idea on how I could do what I am trying to do without so much effort required to click around. But I seem to be getting the same non-reponse to this question as from Millenia. Crickets. I guess the silence is telling me that no one has figured out a quick way to link a common event to mulitple individuals in Legacy, or a quick way to attach a common source citation to selected existing events of multiple individuals. Either way, Legacy users have to copy it once to a clipboard and then click around to open each individual's edit window one at a time. The other two of the top three software packages seem to think it is a big deal. Not sure why it does not seem to have any attention or attraction with Millenia. Re: [LegacyUG] Advanced Sourcing to One Selected Event
I confess that I have not tried to do what you wish, but before my last post I did take a good look at the Advanced Sourcing feature and I cannot see how it can be done at present. As I see it, to make it work it work be necessary, for the Event box to link with the Event Master list so that individual Events can be selected. This might not be the only way, but it is one which comes to mind, and I would have thought that this would not be too difficult to program - but I would bow to Dennis's expertise on this. Re: [LegacyUG] ISBNs
Hi Julia: Paul is correct when he said, Unless you want to sell your book through a bookstore or other commercial outlet or get into libraries you dont need an ISBN. The key word here is sell. For example: If you form your own publishing company (in order to self-publish your book or to publish the work of other authors), and you have the intention of selling those books commercially, you will need to purchase ISBN numbers. Those books will carry a copyright notices and be registered with the Library of Congress. (see Bowker.com for additional information on purchasing ISBNs, costs, etc. There is also a great fact sheet for self-publishers.) On the other hand, if you are self-publishing only with the intent of using the book for your own purposes (e.g. gifts to family members, friends, church, etc.), you do not need an ISBN number. I highly recommend that you register your work with the Library of Congress for added protection. It's as easy as 1,2,3: completing a form (for copyrighting poetry), enclosing a copy of your book, and a small filing fee. I hope you will find this a fun and rewarding project. Good luck! Re: [LegacyUG] Advanced Sourcing to One Selected Event
Exactly. To me, it just seems like just a little extra that would go a long way in making things much easier. By the way, by Event Master List, I assume you are referring to the Event Definition Master List or the All Individuals Who Use This Event Name list that one can get to through the Event Definition Master List? Ron Ferguson ronfergy@tiscali.co.uk wrote: I confess that I have not tried to do what you wish, but before my last post I did take a good look at the Advanced Sourcing feature and I cannot see how it can be done at present. As I see it, to make it work it work be necessary, for the Event box to link with the Event Master list so that individual Events can be selected. This might not be the only way, but it is one which comes to mind, and I would have thought that this would not be too difficult to program - but I would bow to Dennis's expertise on this. Re: [LegacyUG] Advanced Sourcing to One Selected Event
My primary desire would be adding a source citation to a new event that I create right after I create the source citation, followed immediately by attaching the new event to the individuals to which the event applies. My fall-back desire is to attach a common source citation to an common event that is already attached to the individuals. Dennis M.
