RE: [LegacyUG] OCCUPATIONS LIST

2012-02-10 Thread cr brassfield

Hi Everyone
I was looking to have a master list like 'locations' that would show me all the
individuals I had entered who did a specific job compiled from data I had
already entered under 'occupation'. There are a number of research advantages
to such a list. Just a couple = If like me you have families continually giving
children same names but they follow different profession then if you get an
apprenticeship record or occupation details in a source it's easier to locate
correct person.Helps track families' life-style and migration if they have done
work affected by industrialisation and other changes. Useful for looking in
sources you might not otherwise consider. I have often found links to how they
met future spouses in this way.

Jenny, WOW!!!How did you figure out how to do all that?? ;)
I think maybe the OP was wanting a drop-down list of occupations to select from
when entering... I don't know... a new field for the individual?
However, your approach did point out to me the MANY ways I have been entering
data for an Occupation event over the years! Oh dear, I see another clean-up
task on my horizon! ;)Thanks,

Try this, it works but the result might not be exactly how you'd like it.

First, open the Event Definitions Master List, select Occupation and
click Show List. Now click the Create Search List button and click
Create New List. Click Close, then Close again and a message will
appear asking if you want to show the results. Click OK and the list
will appear as a Name List.

Now click print and select the fields to appear on your Report. You
will want at least Surname, Given names so check the box next to that
and click the Options button next to Optional Fields. On the next
screen, click one of the buttons with 3 dots on next to a field you
*don't* want and select Event from the resulting list. Select
Occupation from the next list. Click Close and then check the box
 next
to Event: Occupation.

Nearly there!

No click Preview and see if you are happy with the results. You can
make some small alterations to the layout before printing if you want.

I can think of 2 reasons for that being impractical. For one, there are
just far too many occupations. Secondly, what would you do about

There is another way if you know how to use MSACCESS
Change the fdb extension to mdb
open in MSAccess
Create the following query in sql view

SELECT distinct tblER.Description FROM tblER WHERE (((tblER.IDET)=47));

Display the results and copy paste into Excel as your master Occupations List
Do not save the query

Except, as I have pointed out before, there is no need to rename your

couple of steps.

Re: [LegacyUG] Apple question

2012-02-10 Thread Ric Altman
It's difficult or impossible to have one computer answer every need. I got
so tired of dealing with Windows quirks and failures that I finally went
down to the Apple store and told them to give me a computer, don't show me
the receipt, I don't care what it costs, just give me what I need. You will
probably pay more, but you will be happy. Dealing with using Legacy on a
Mac will be a small hassle. It's a shame Legacy can't get with the program,
Apple's share of the market is only going to continue to increase. I had a
desktop all my life and now can't understand why. I take my laptop
everywhere. It's a 15 inch which borders on being too large on an airplane
but I do a lot of image manipulation and websites so I need a larger
screen. It weighs about 5 pounds, even though it is slim, it still is a
little heavy. If you don't need a big screen for images, then a 13 would
work well. You get used to the keyboard to where now, a real keyboard feels
weird. You could always buy a USB keyboard for home use. Now, I have been
talking about a Macbook Pro. Apple is coming out with a 15 Macbook Air with
a stronger processor and a larger SSD hard drive next month. The Air is
half the weight and much slimmer than a Pro. The SSD hard drive makes the
machine far more responsive even though the Pro is very responsive in it's
own right. One way they make it lighter and slimmer other than eliminating
the old style harddrive with it's tendency to fail (no moving parts in the
SSD) is the elimination of the CD/DVD drive. To be able to use CDs/DVDs,
you need to buy a separate drive that you would plug in as needed. I never
realized how little I used that until I began considering buying an Air.
People who switch from a Windows machine to Apple are considered cult
members and maybe that's true. At a minimum, I drink the Kool-Aide. Apple
derives it's reputation from the fact that Apple makes both software and
the hardware. They have very tight control over the software and total
control over the hardware. Windows makes only software that hopes to work
well with hardware that comes from a hundred manufacturers, a daunting
task. Apple's software has to work only with Apple hardware. The hassle is
that occasionally you come across a software company that only makes a
Windows version. I would never trade the dependability and usability of my
Mac just to run one Windows software. The switch will entail a learning
curve, but Apple provides unlimited one to one in-store support (I say
unlimited a you can go in any number of times, but they won't spend all day
with you) and free classes and you can also pay for a year's worth on one
to one support. They also provide a year of telephone support. The help in
the stores is a revelation in itself. Do yourself a favor. I'm guessing
your friends feel the same way.

I agree with you on the impracticality of a master list of occupations. I think
nearly all the occupations I have came from US census listings, and it's not

Maybe a worthwhile option would be for the Occupation Description field to
display a drop down list of occupations that you have already added such that
as you started to type in the field the list reduced down. This type of

Re: [LegacyUG] OCCUPATIONS LIST

2012-02-10 Thread Sherry/Support
There are two ways you can create a report like this:

1. Click on the Reports icon, select the Books/Other tab and then the
Event report. You can create a report on one specific event type for
any or all persons.

2. Create a Name List or Search List report. Bring up the Name List
or your Search List, click on Print and add up to 30 fields of data
(in the Deluxe) to the report.

You can search for all people who were grocers by clicking on the
Search icon, selecting the Detailed Search tab and do the following
search:

Look for whom? Individuial
Where to look Event Description
How to look Contains
What to look for Grocer

Do you get this for everybody in your file?

I do get this problem with quite a few people, but not everybody. In most
cases, but oddly not all, it is because there is data in the General or
Research Notes that is formatted - e.g. Underlined, Bold, Italics. I believe
that this situation is in Legacy's problem log from a year or so back.

It shouldn't happen and basically a flag gets set incorrectly to say the data
has been altered, but this obviously gets set immediately on opening the Notes
in some situations.

[LegacyUG] Any reports of problems with the latest update??

2012-02-10 Thread Diane Manley
I'm wondering if anyone has had any problems with their database after the
latest update? When I opened Legacy after the recent update I noticed a
problem with several locations. All of a sudden Legacy took random
locations and assigned them to hundreds of people the location didn't
belong to. I now have 300+ people that all got married at the same
cemetery. I haven't checked all locations but so far have found 4
locations that were randomly assigned where they didn't belong. So I went
to one of my backups. The locations are fine, but when I started Legacy
today (with my backup that I had been using for a couple of days) my entire
line was gone. My husband's line is fine, but all of a sudden I didn't
have any ancestors. They were all still in the database, but had just
suddenly disconnected from me. So I had to reconnect everyone. It's
getting very frustrating! Anyone else have any problems??

[LegacyUG] Proper placement of place names

2012-02-10 Thread Sherri Hessick
A member of my local users group is asking some questions about the proper
placement of certain types of place names in Legacy. Typically, we enter the
U.S. place names in the format: “City, County, State, Country” which is four
positions with the country in the fourth position. If we are missing a place
name, for example the city, we would enter a comma in the first position to
indicate its absence to ensure that the rest of the place names are in their
proper positions (i.e. “, County, State, Country”).

Now, here are the questions:

1) If we have a place name that is “Of” somewhere (e.g. Of Ann Arundel
County, Maryland), would you include the word “OF” in the county position?
Or something else?

2) How do we handle the non-US place names that have more than 4
positions? She gives an example of “St. Jean De Mortagne, Alencon, Orne,
France” where St. Jean appears to be the parish and Mortagne appears to be
the city. What is Alencon? Is Orne the province? How would you enter a place
such as this in Legacy? Should it be entered exactly as I have typed without
a comma between St. Jean and Mortagne?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

[LegacyUG] Proper placement of place names

2012-02-10 Thread Tony Rolfe
The short answer is do whatever you want.

The long answer is that there appears to be at least 3 ways to handle this.

My way is to include everything in the location name. So I may have
something like

Plot7, Row 123, Whatever Cemetery, 123-135, whatever street, sometown,
some county, some country.

I never have double commas in any of my addresses.

Version 2 is to stick strictly to the 4-field convention and put
double-commas to show missing data.

Version 3 is to restrict the location to towns (villages etc.), not to
include double-commas, street addresses or cemetery names, church names
or the like, but to use as many fields as you need.

I'm sure someone else will suggest version 4, 5 etc.

there have been a lot of threads on this issue. It may be an idea to
search the archives

Cheers

Tony

Re: [LegacyUG] OCCUPATIONS LIST

2012-02-10 Thread Brian/Support
Alan,

There is no Occupation Description field where your suggestion could
be applied. In Legacy Occupation is an event.

If you are suggesting that the Event Description field have an
autocomplete and drop down list option, that would require a database
table be linked to that field. Since Occupation is only one of the many
event names in the Event Master List I do not think you can link a
database table to the description only when the Event name selected is
Occupation and not have it linked for all the other Events.

Hi Chuck

I would suggest that you make the surety level the setting in the
source, and make sure you have a source. You could use your general
catch-all source of Grandma told me if you have no documentation -
and the relationship is based on that with the appropriate level of surety.

Is there any way for the Surety level (0-4) to show for an event on the
general screen or on reports EXCEPT UNDER SOURCES?. In other words I would
like to identify the level of confidence I have in the *event*, not the
 source.

Another way of stating the problem is how sure am I that a person is a son
 or daughter of another.

 Any suggestions would be useful.

 Thanks

RE: [LegacyUG] OCCUPATIONS LIST

2012-02-10 Thread Mike Bridgeford
Hi Alan,
I use the 'title suf', after the person's name to record the person's main
occupation in square brackets. For example, mine would be Michael Angus
Bridgeford [mech.engineer]. It may not be sortable, but it give me a very quick
and ready guide to a person's main occupation, which helps with the
identification of other information relevant to him. I do not normally put in
the female's occupation, unless it is relevant.
Regards,
Mike bridgeford

Maybe a worthwhile option would be for the Occupation Description field to
display a drop down list of occupations that you have already added such that
as you started to type in the field the list reduced down. This type of
functionality is possible in MSAccess forms so should be just as easy to
 produce in Legacy.

It would allow you to standardise within your own database without affecting
 the base functionality of Legacy.
